FLYING TO CABO (MMSL) FROM THE US
Flying to Mexico from the US is quite simple. Follow these 6 easy steps and your trip will be a breeze (hopefully a tailwind).
#1 – Obtain the charts for the area you will be flying. Jeppesen sells “Trip Kits”. Follow this link to see the prices and options.
#2 – Purchase a Mexico Insurance Policy. This is required for flight into Mexico and a copy of the policy MUST be onboard the airplane. Inquire through your insurance carrier as most will issue you a supplemental policy for little cost. If you wish to purchase a policy from a source other than your carrier, you can contact a third party provider such as MacAfee and Edwards (800-‐334-‐7950).
#3 – Obtain a US Customs & Border Protection Decal through the DTOPS website if you do not already have one. The cost is only $27.50 and the decal is good for one year.
#4 – File your flight plan just as you would while flying in the US. Be sure to file the airways as this is Mexico’s preferred method of navigation. Once you are in Mexican Airspace you can ask for direct routing from the Center Controller if you desire (but don’t count on getting it). The controllers in Mexico all speak pretty good English.
#5 – File an eAPIS report with the FAA prior to your departure (now required by Homeland Security for international travel). Many of the flight plan providers now have an option to file this report directly through their systems when you file your flight plan. If yours does not, try fltplan.com as they have a simple tool for accomplishing this or follow the above link to file one directly through the eAPIS website.
#6 – MMSL (The Cabo City Airport) has been selected as the host airport for the Conference. Upon arrival you will find Fist Class service provided by Sebastian Romo, (the airport owner) his wife Iria and their wonderful staff. Unlike all other FBO’s in Mexico, tipping is not permitted at MMSL!
A few days prior to your departure, email the following information to MMSL;
• Aircraft Registration • Airworthiness Certificate • Pilots License • Medical Certificate • Mexican Insurance Policy • Passenger Manifest (Include each passenger’s name as it appears on their passport, gender, date of birth, passport
number and expiration date) • Estimated arrival time (for ground coordination) • Name and address of the hotel you will be staying at while in Cabo • Desired method of transportation (rental car, taxi, hotel shuttle etc.) • Any other special requests
With this information the staff at MMSL will have your transportation arranged and all of your paperwork prepared. Your arrival will be simple and easy. Get ready to enjoy the warm Cabo sunshine!
