CABI SCIENCE REPORT 20172 3
1. Implementing the CABI Science StrategyHere we present highlights from a number of areas anticipated in the CABI Science Strategy1, 2017-2019, much supported by the CABI Development Fund (CDF).
Maintain CABI’s annual publication recordIt is one of CABI’s corporate key performance indicators to produce at least 100 scientific publications each year, of which at least 30 are in journals with an impact factor greater than 2.00 that year. The table below summarises the listings later in this report (Section 2), while the graph shows the trend over the last nine years; it can be seen that we significantly exceeded both targets in 2017.

CABI SCIENCE REPORT 20174 5
CABI Scientific Outputs Portal (CSOP) further developed and updatedAt the end of 2017, the CSOP2 held 3,583 records. Recently published items from 2016 and 2017 were added. All publications by CABI staff since 2000 that were already in CABDirect have now been added to the CSOP. Those since 2000 which were missing from CABDirect have been identified and those missing since 2009 have been added, while those missing that were published 2000–2008 have been identified and will be added in 2018. The CSOP is now used to automatically generate bibliographies for the individual staff pages on the website.
Record of Scientific OutputsThis annual science report provides an effective mechanism to monitor the publications, reports, talks and posters, research students, major scientific contributions etc. made by CABI’s scientific staff each year. In addition an internal publications pipeline spreadsheet has been established, which enables the progress of all staff publications to be monitored from concept to publication.
CABI’s research published open accessBy 2020, CABI aims to publish its research open access, depending on the requirements of the sponsors (CABI Science Strategy and CABI’s Knowledge Management Policies3). Of CABI’s core research published in peer-reviewed journals with a CABI lead or corresponding author, 31 of 43 papers (72%) were published open access in 2017 (sections 1.1 and 2.4.2). The costs were met from projects when appropriate, CDF (ten papers in 2017), and centre budgets.
Social media used to promote scientific outputsCABI is developing strategy and practice to use social media and on-line network opportunities to promote CABI scientific outputs. For example, staff have been given advice on the use of social media and blogging, and the PLUM metric widget in the CSOP can monitor uptake in social media. Our scientists now have public google scholar profiles – see: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&view_op=search_authors&mauthors=cabi&btnG
Research students (MSc, PhD etc.) and interns (summer students)For 2017, we planned to host at least 5 research students and 15 interns across CABI (total 20), of which 5 are at centres other than Switzerland. In 2017 we hosted 16 research students (section 4.3, 1 BSc, 6 MSc and 9 PhD) and 31 interns, of which 16 were at the centre in Switzerland (section 4.7).

CABI SCIENCE REPORT 20176 7
Research involving people implemented using a gender sensitive approachAs set out in the CABI Project and Programme Gender Strategy, CABI is embedding a gender sensitive approach to project and programme delivery including ensuring that research takes women, men, youth and other diverse groups into account. Hence, we expect more research publications to be based on data disaggregated by gender and other social factors. This is reflected in four papers published in 2017:
Karubanga, G.; Matsiko, F.B. and Danielsen, S. (2017) Access and coverage: which farmers do plant clinics reach in Uganda? Development in Practice 27(8), 1091–1102.

(2017) Development of market opportunities through post-harvest processing of the African indigenous vegetables in Tanzania. African Journal of Business Management 11(17), 426–437.
Negussie, E.G. and Ndinda, C. (2017) Smallholders’ access to and demand for credit and influencing factors: policy and research implications for Ethiopia. Journal of Business & Economic Policy 4(3), 48–60.
Maintain and use BIOCAT for scientific research outputsBIOCAT is currently up to date to the end of 2010 (based on published literature). A small number of newly detected errors and omissions were corrected in 2017. We collected the data to update to the end of 2017, and this will be added after quality checks in 2018. The following publication in 2017 used data generated from BIOCAT:
Kenis, M., Hurley, B.P., Hajek, A.E. and Cock, M.J.W. (2017) Classical biological control against insect pests of trees: facts and figures. Biological Invasions 19(11), 3401–3417.
and the following presentations benefitted from the analysis of data from BIOCAT:
Cock, M.J.W. and Kuhlmann, U. (2017) Classical biological control of insects in developed and developing countries: a comparison using BIOCAT database. 5th International Symposium on Biological Control of Arthropods, 11–15 September 2017, Langkawi, Malaysia.
Hinz, H.L., Cock, M.J.W., Haye, T. and Schaffner, U. (2017) Arthropod and weed biological control: mutual benefits and common challenges. 5th International Symposium on Biological Control of Arthropods, 11–15 September 2017, Langkawi, Malaysia.
