Indias CAG wins Election To United Nations Board OfAuditors

India on 1 November won a crucial election to the UN Board ofAuditors with its nominee Shashi Kant Sharma, theComptroller and Auditor General, garnering the largest numberof votes.Sharma won 124 votes out of the total 186 cast in theGeneral Assemblys Fifth Committee on Administrative andBudgetary questions.India won by a comfortable margin

against its closest contender the Philippines, which got 62votes.Having obtained the required majority and the largestnumber of votes, Shashi Kant Sharma will be appointed to theUN Board of Auditors for a six year term beginning on 1 July2014.The General Assembly in 1946 established the UN Boardof Auditors to audit of the accounts of the United Nationsorganisation and its funds and programmes and to report itsfindings and recommendations to the Assembly through theAdvisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary

Questions.

Judai and Dama Dam Mast Kalandar.Reshma was born in1947 in Bikaner, Rajasthan, in a Banjara family.She has noformal education in music, but at the age of just 12 years, shewas seen singing at the Shahbaz Qalanders shrine. Kinect Sign Language Translator Developed By Microsoftand Chinese Researchers

US software company Microsoft recently developed a new cost-effective sign language translator that converts signs intospoken and written language and vice versa.In collaborationwith researchers in China, Microsoft created the Kinect SignLanguage Translator, a prototype system that understands thegestures of sign language and converts them to spoken and

written languageand vice versa.The translator uses a computerand a Kinect camera that recognises signing gestures, thengives a spoken and written translation of languages for peoplewho can hear.The system captures a conversation both sides:

the deaf person is shown signing, with a written and spokentranslation being rendered in real-time, while the system takesthe hearing persons spoken words and turns them intoaccurate, understandable signs. The project was collaborationbetween the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing UnionUniversity, and Microsoft Research Asia.

Black Holes Discovered in Star Cluster M62

Scientists discovered a black hole in a collection of stars in theconstellation Ophiuchus, which is about 22000 light yearsfrom Earth. The globular cluster in which black hole wasspotted is known as M62. The globular cluster M62 is locatedin the constellation Ophiuchus.The discovery was done by theteam of astronomers led by a Michigan State University

professor. Black holes are stars that have died, collapsed intothemselves and possess such a strong gravitational field thateven light cannot escape from them.Prior to this discovery,astronomers had assumptions that the black holes did notexist in globular clusters- some of the oldest and densestcollections of stars in the universe.There are numerous stars insuch a condensed area that they often interact with oneanother. Massive black holes will have most violent encounters.

RBI Permits Foreign Banks Subsidiary To Acquire PrivateBanks

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 6 November permitted theWholly Owned Subsidiaries (WOS) of the foreign banks toacquire the domestic private sector banks. RBI also permittedthe banks to set up branches anywhere in the country.As perthe permission given by RBI, the foreign banks will have to

seek permission of RBI to open branches in certain sensitivelocations. The foreign bank subsidiaries have also been allowedto list on the local stock exchanges. Although, they will not beallowed to hold more than 74 percent in the private banks they

may acquire.The order of the RBI also stated that the foreignbanks that commenced banking business in India beforeAugust 2010 will be given an opportunity to convert into awholly owned subsidiary.

Government Announces Provision For Higher Sugar Export

Government has on 15 November announced a provision forhigher sugar export with domestic production becomingsurplus.The condition of export of sugar has been relaxed bydoubling the limit of the overseas shipment that sellers canregister.The export of sugar has been doubled to 50000 tonnesfrom 25000 tonnes per application for registration wasannounced by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.Thesugar production of India is projected at 25 million tonnes in2013-14, which is two million tonnes more than the domestic

demand.

Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile Test Fired Successfully

An advanced version of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missilesystem was successfully test fired by the Indian Army at thePokhran test range in Rajasthan on 18 November.The Block IIIvariant of the Brahmos with deep penetration capability was

test launched from a Mobile Autonomous Launcher (MAL)deployed in full configuration with Mobile command Post(MCP).After being launched, the missile followed thepredetermined trajectory and successfully pierced thedesignated concrete structure at bulls eye owing to sheervelocity of the missile.The launch has successfully validatedthe deep penetration capability of the supersonic cruise missilesystem against hardened targets.The Block III variant of land-attack Brahmos has already established its credence in

achieving supersonic steep dive with precision strike capabilityin mountain operations.The army has inducted two regimentsof the missile in its arsenal, while the third regiment inductionis in progress.The 290-km Brahmos flies at a speed of 2.8Mach and carries a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg.Themissile can be launched from multiple platforms includingland, sea, sub-sea and air.Both the army and vavy havealready inducted the missile in service, while the air-version ofthe weapon is scheduled to be flight tested by the Indian Air

Force soon.

border.Construction of Ngari Photovoltaic (PV) Power Station,the worlds highest 10-MW PV power station in Ngari Prefectureis complete and test runs are underway.Ngari Prefecture islocated close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).The PV powerstation is a joint venture between the central government andGuodian Longyuan Tibet New Energy Co. Ltd. with a totalinstalled capacity of 10 MW and an expected working life of 25years.Construction began on the site on July 1, 2012 just 3kilometres away from the centre of Shiquanhe Township, seat

of Ngari Prefecture, at 4,270 metres above sea level with anarea of 23.8 hectares.

National Lok Adalat Settled Over 28 Lakh Cases Pending InIndia

The National Lok Adalat organised throughout the country on

23 November 2013 settled a record 28.26 lakh cases pending invarious courts.The three Lok Adalat benches constituted in theSupreme Court settled 51 cases, while other benches acrossthe country set a world record by amicably settling over 28lakh cases. Due to the ongoing assembly elections in MadhyaPradesh, the 7.97 lakh cases referred to the national LokAdalat would be taken up for disposal on the 30th November2013.For the first time, Lok Adalats was held across thecountry in all courts including the Supreme Court and High

Courts aiming to dispose of lakhs of cases in a day.Lok adalatsare an alternative dispute resolution mechanism where partiesare encouraged to amicably settle cases outside the formalcourt system. Generally, cases where parties can reach anamicable settlement, including bounced cheque and bankrecovery cases, civil suits, motor accident claims, servicematters, family matters and traffic challan cases are taken upby lok adalats.

Deepak Lathore Won Gold and Silver Medals atCommonwealth Weightlifting Championships

Indias Deepak Lathore won Gold and two Silver medals in theBoys 50 Kg category of the Commonwealth WeightliftingChampionships on 25 November at Penang, Malaysia. On theopening day of the event, Lathore took the Gold in Snatch with

a lift of 83 kg. In Clean and Jerk, he lifted 102 kg to claim theSilver. With a total lift of 185 kg, he won another Silver in theevent. The 2013 Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youthweightlifting Championships are being held at Penang city ofMalaysia from 24 to 30 November 2013. Nepal and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) qualified for the ICCT20 World cup which will be held in Bangladesh in 2014.Nepaldefeated Hong Kong by five wickets in Abu Dhabi on 27November .The UAE has also qualified for the tournament asthey defeated the Netherlands by 10 runs.This will be the firsttime since the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996 that the UAE andNepal will make an appearance on the global stage.
