    Bangalore Renamed Bengaluru

    Karnatakas capital Bangalore on 1 November 2014 shed its colonialname to become Bengaluru along with 11 other cities across the state,renamed in the native Kannada language. The renaming of Indias techhub and other cities coincided with Karnatakas 59th formation day.

    The state government on 31 October 2014 notified that Bangalore and11 other cities across the state will be pronounced and spelt in Kannadafrom 1 November 2014, following approval by the central government to

    rename them in the local language. Other well-known cities like Mysorewill be pronounced and spelt Mysuru, Mangalore as Mangaluru ;Belgaum as Belagavi ; Bellary as Ballari ; Hubli as Hubballi andGulbarga in the states northern region as Kalaburgi. The remainingfive cities Bijapur became Vijayapura ; ChikmagalurChikkamagaluru ; Hospet Hosapeta ; Shimoga in Malnad region asShivamogga and Tumkur Tumakuru.

    CSIR Scientist Venkat Mohan Won Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

    S Venkata Mohan, scientist at the Council of Scientific and IndustrialResearch (CSIR) Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT),Hyderabad has been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize 2014in Engineering Sciences. His contributions in generating wealth fromwaste leading to the establishment of a viable link between wasteremediation, renewable energy and third generation biofuels, has beenrecognised.

    Rajiv Mehrishi Took Over As New Economic Affairs Secretary

    Rajiv Mehrishi took charge as Union Finance Secretary under the UnionMinistry of Finance. He was appointed as Secretary of Economic Affairsof Finance. Rajiv Mehrishi succeeded Arvind Mayaram who was shiftedto Ministry of Minority Affairs on 30 October 2014. Earlier on 16October 2014 Arvind Subramaniam joined as the new Chief EconomicAdvisor.

    Veteran Bollywood actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, who essayed villainousand comic roles with equal ease and gave powerful performances inArdh Satya and Sadak, died in Mumbai on 3 November. SadashivAmrapurkar was born as Ganesh Kumar Narwode in Nasik in 1950 andlater in 1974 he adopted the name Sadashiv. He was associated withMarathi stage before migrating to the world of Hindi and Marathi films.He received the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role

    Mumbai Has Highest Number of Internet Users In India

    According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) andIndian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) latest study report, Mumbaihas the highest number of Internet users at about 16.4 million in thecountry which has over 243 million web users. Delhi was second witha user base of 12.1 million. The National Capital recorded the fastest

    year-on-year growth rate of 50 percent in Internet user base among topeight cities of the country.

    Union Cabinet Approved Dissolution Of Delhi Assembly

    The Union Cabinet on 4 November gave its approval to the proposal fordissolution of the Delhi Assembly. The approval will pave the way forholding of fresh Election in Delhi.     Anita Kapur Appointed As CBDT new Chairperson

    Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Anita Kapur has beenappointed as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT), the apex authority of the income tax department. Kapur, a1978-batch officer of the income tax cadre, was till now serving asmember (legislation and computerisation and income tax) in the CBDT.She took over the top charge after her appointment was made by thegovernment as incumbent CBDT Chairman K.V.     Union Rail Minister Flagged Off The Automatic Freight Train

    Indias first automatic freight train AutoLinxSM was on 7 Novemberflagged-off by Union Rail Minister D.V. Sadanada Gowda at Melpakkamnear Chennai. This train carried around 280 finished cars and left forDelhi where it would reach in a weeks time. It will arrive at the multi-modal logistics park of Container Corporation of India (CCI) atKhatuwas near Delhi. This train is developed by Delhi-based APL

    Havells India Chairman Qimat Rai Gupta Died

    Electrical equipment maker Havells India group chairman Qimat RaiGupta died on 7 November. He was 77. Gupta recently also made it tothe Forbes billionaire list for the first time and was ranked Indias 48thrichest man with a net worth of $ 2 billion as of September 2014. QimatRai Gupta started Havells India Limited in 1971 and transformed it toa multinational company with operations across 51 countries.     21 New Ministers Inducted Into The Union Cabinet

    President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office to 21Ministers, including four Cabinet Ministers, three Ministers of State(Independent Charge) and 14 Ministers of State on 9 November.     India on 9 November successfully test-fired its medium-range nuclear-capable Agni-II missile with a strike range of more than 2000 km fromthe Wheeler Island off Odisha coast as part of a user trial by the army.

    The two-stage sophisticated missile equipped with advanced highaccuracy navigation system, guided by a novel scheme of state of theearth command and control system was propelled by solid rocketpropellant system. The 20-metre long Agni-II missile is a two-stage,solid-propelled ballistic missile. It has a launch weight of 17 tonnes andcan carry a payload of 1000 kg over a distance of more than 2,000 km.

    Noted Scholar MSS Pandian Died

    Noted scholar and JNU professor Mathias Samuel Soundra Pandian,popularly known as MSS Pandian, died on 10 November in New Delhi.He was 57. He was working with the School of Social Sciences Centrefor Historical Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Hispublications were many including Brahmin and Non -Brahmin:Genealogies of the Tamil Political Present and The Image Trap: M GRamachandran in Films and Politics. Pandian wrote extensively on theDravidian Movement, south Indian politics, cinema, caste, identity andseveral other socially relevant issues. Pandian wrote for nationalnewspapers and for the Economic and Political Weekly for several yearsand was known for his incisive articles on Tamil Nadu and Dravidianpolitics in particular.

    India and Israel successfully test fired long range surface to air missilejointly developed which also signifies their cooperation in developingadvanced weapon systems. Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM)

    is called Barak 8 missile in Israel. The missile successfully intercepteda manoeuvring air-breathing target mimicking an attacking combataircraft.     China has unveiled its first Mars rover ahead of the 10th ChinaInternational Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition kicking off in the cityof Zhuhai. The Mars rover has a large dish antenna on its back and isalso equipped with more solid wheels. China International Aviation andAerospace Exhibition, also known as Airshow China, is an internationalaerospace trade show that has been held in Zhuhai every year from1996.     Legendary filmmaker and director of popular television serialMahabharat, Ravi Chopra died at the age of 68 years on 12 Novemberin Mumbai. He started his career assisting his father B R Chopra infilms like, Dastaan (1972) and Dhund (1973). He also assisted his uncleYash Chopra in Ittefaq (1969). He made his independent directorialdebut with Zameer (1975), produced under the family banner, B.R.Films. He was also the first Bollywood filmmaker who was taken to thecourt by a Hollywood company over the remaking of a film. In 2009,20th Century Fox had served a legal notice to Ravi Chopra and his

    production company B R Films over remaking of the 1992 Oscar Awardwinning comedy film My Cousin Vinny into Bollywood film Banda YeBindaas Hai. Fox sought 1.4 million US dollars in damages.

    Pakistan on 13 November conducted a successful training launch ofintermediate range Shaheen-II (Hatf-VI) ballistic missile. The successfullaunch was the culminating point of the Field Training Exercise of ArmyStrategic Forces Command. Shaheen-II Missile is capable of carrying

    nuclear and conventional warheads to a range of 1500 kilometres.

    Times, was a long-time treasurer of the Sports Journalists Federationof India. He was among the few Indian sports scribes who were presentto witness Kapil Devs team winning the coveted World Cup in Englandin 1983. He was a well-known commentator in Marathi and wasassociated with All India Radio and Doordarshan for decades. Sant wasthe only sports journalist to have attended the JK Bose All India Crickettournament for sports journalists since its inception.

The estimated cost of the scheme forabove two components is Rs.43,033 crore which includes therequirement of budgetary support of Rs.33,453 crore from Governmentof India over the entire implementation period.

    The United Nations agreed that all members should pass and enforcelaws banning child marriages, resolving to end a practice that affectsabout 15 million girls every year. The committee of the 193-nationGeneral Assembly that deals with human rights adopted by consensusa resolution urging all states to take steps to end child, early and forcedmarriage. There are now more than 700 million women who weremarried before their 18th birthday, many in conditions of poverty andinsecurity, according to U.N. statistics.
