with speaker Gina Parcells

Our pot luck dinner last winter was such a success that we decided to do it again! We are very excited to welcome Gina Parcells as our featured speaker that evening. She is familiar to many of you, as a former leader of the women’s Bible study group. Gina is a dynamic Virginia Beach “local” who loves tennis, “Cheers,” Clemson, the beach, her 3 kids, and God…not necessarily in that order. She is a math teacher extraordinaire at First Colonial High School who encourages kids to love math and trust its processes. Her passion for teaching extends to us on Tuesday, January 14th as she encourages us to love God and trust His processes. She has quite a story to tell, and we are honored to have her.

Questions, please call Cheryl Jordan at 428-1023 or email [email protected].

There is no charge for the event. Call the church office with your reservation at 428-3573. A sign-up sheet will

also be available on Sundays as well as in the Gift Shop. Guests are welcome with a reservation.

CANCER

SUPPORT Cancer support is still available for those whose lives have been touched by this dreaded disease. Due to the request and needs of most people, we stopped meeting in groups and just meet with individuals or family members. We are willing to meet on your terms. We are flexible and will make phone contacts, home visits, have you in our home, meet for tea, come to the hospital,…) Whatever is the most comfortable place for you and your loved ones. Cancer is not the end! There is HOPE! We offer hope, support, compassion, humor, and prayer. Both of us have been the patient and the caregiver and feel we can actually say, “We understand”! Please contact us if you would like to have support. You do not have to go through this alone. Bruce and Anne Rainey 757-496-0091 or [email protected]

PETALS

Dan Proulx found out we had three members in Virginia Beach General and decided to make some hospital calls. Following his visit, he sent an email telling about the unusual connections that took place. When he visited the first person, he realizer her son had been in the same Boy Scout Troop as his son! She was pleased to hear him say what a smart young man he remembered her son to be! The second visit was to a member who attends the same 8am service he does. She and her husband usually sit in the row behind him every week. His third and final visit was to a man that was from Amsterdam, NY where Dan was born!

VESTRY

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8

Tucker Hall

It's time again for our great big "Cookie Exchange" - the annual COOKIE WALK! For those who are new to this event, it is a fun experience for the whole family. As you enter Tucker Hall, you will receive a box to carry with you as you "walk" down aisles of hundreds of homemade holiday cookies. You pick what you'd like - 5 gingerbread men, 3 chocolate chip, 2 reindeer faces, 7 pecan sandies, etc. At the end of the "walk" your box is weighed for purchase. Cookies sell for $8/lb. and it's all for a very worthy cause. Proceeds benefit the John Jordan Transportation Fund at the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, enabling residents to purchase bus passes and providing other means of transportation to get to their jobs, medical appointments, and the like. Our support will help the JCOC residents attain their goal of regaining independence in our community.

We count on YOU to make this another successful year, and we hope everyone will consider baking several dozen cookies to have available for purchase that day. Please involve your children and grandchildren in holiday baking, so that they may experience the joy in helping support those less fortunate. The Cookie Walk funding is limited only by the number of cookies we have available for sale, so please be generous with your baking! Donations of cakes and pies are also welcomed, and will be priced individually. Please deliver your homemade cookies to Tucker Hall kitchen on either Friday, December 6th or Saturday morning, December 7th. Then, please enjoy the Cookie Walk on Sunday as Tucker Hall is transformed into a sea of delectable cookies! Please contact Maggie Simmons, chairman, at 469-4489, or email [email protected] for more information, or if you would like to volunteer on Saturday 12/7 or Sunday 12/8.

FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, I was unprepared for the effect that Israel would have on me. Although I went as a minister well versed in the Old & New Testaments, each day I found myself speechless and lost in thought as I stepped into places I’ve studied for over two decades. I have experienced nothing quite so remarkable as standing on the ground where God touched earth, touching stones where we know the feet of Jesus walked…. Before I went to Israel, I was pretty sure that this would be my one and only trip. But having gone to Israel, I already look forward to returning—and taking you with me. Why? Because it will likely accomplish for you what it has done for millions—you will grow in your understanding of your faith, you’ll be strengthened in your faith—and you’ll be renewed. If you’re interested in learning more about a parish trip to Israel, I’ll host an informational meeting on Sunday, January 19th, at 10:20 in Jordan Hall. We’ll look at a tentative plan for a parish trip, I’ll have some rough numbers of the cost—and we’ll have time to answer questions. Parish Administrator After 7 years of faithful service to our Lord at Galilee, Tom Duffey has decided to retire from his position of Parish Administrator at the end of 2013. Many of you have come to know Tom, and you know that we’re losing a great employee. Tom’s combined faith and business acumen have served Galilee well, and I will personally miss his company throughout the week. When you have a moment, please stop by Tom’s office to thank him and wish him well. Last week we hired Tom’s successor, Mr. Henry Conde. Henry’s background is similar to Tom’s, having retired from the Navy with the rank of Captain—he also has a strong business background and, essential for Galilee, he has a strong and lively faith in the Lord Jesus. I look forward to having Henry on board; he will begin on December 2nd and overlap with Tom Duffey for one month. Christmas Eve Last year we started a 3:30 children’s service—with great success. We’ll continue this year, and I encourage families to take advantage of this 30-minute service as an opportunity to focus your children (with a fun and engaging service) on the meaning of Christmas Day—and it’s also a good service to which to invite your friends and neighbors who may not have a church home. Grace and peace, Father Buchanan+

CALL FOR

MENTORS for the residents of the Judeo-

Christian Outreach Center

The Residents of the JCOC You probably know that thirty men and twenty women live at the JCOC with free food and lodging while they get their lives back together. The Grant You might not know that the Diocese of Southern Virginia has given a Seeds of Hope Grant for more than $2,000 to Galilee to help these folks get certified in safe handling of food, personal home care and to get their GEDs by helping them pay for the courses. The Mentors As part of our grant application Galilee agreed that we would offer parishioners the opportunity to mentor the JCOC residents as they go through their courses. The Process Mentors will sit through a training class at the JCOC where they will receive orientation about the process and will meet their residents. Mentors will then monitor their resident’s progress through the few weeks of the course in person, by phone, or by email as they choose. If interested in becoming a mentor, please call Doug Archer at 675-0270.

WARDENS’ REPORTS I am very encouraged by a number of items moving forward in our church recently. God has blessed us with a fine replacement to Tom Duffey, who has served us faithfully over the past several years and will take a much deserved retirement after December. Our new staff member's name is Henry Conde, and you will begin to see him in the building in early December. You will hear more about both Tom's retirement and Henry's arrival in the coming weeks. The nominating committee presented a wonderful slate of candidates to run for the Vestry during our next elections, and please join me in thanking Cheryl Jordan, Jennifer Fernandez, Ann Malbon, and Jerry Kent for the hard work in assembling such a strong slate. Finally, it appears that we have come to terms to purchase approximately forty feet of land to the north of our property line (into the Cavalier parking lot) to give us a bit of room between our facilities and the homes of our future new neighbors when the property is developed. We have looked at some preliminary plans detailing how to use the additional land, with hopes to keep as many parking spaces as possible within easy walking distance to the church. I thank God for His continued blessing on Galilee! Best regards, Robbie Berndt Senior Warden

As we wind down the year and prepare for Advent and Christmas I am pleased to report no major "must fund"projects remain on our list. Recent activity included: renovation of the 2nd floor classrooms and offices. Please take note of the upgrades to the rooms and the furniture; and the sound system in the sanctuary was upgraded by adding and relocating speakers, adding software to compliment our existing control system. We are still adjusting the sound to make both the voice and music better. Next year we will be looking at much needed restroom renovations, especially on the 2nd floor near the classrooms. Lastly, as Tom Duffy is preparing to retire at the end of December, we should all thank him for his excellent service to Galilee's Maintenance and Repair efforts. Tom has been a superb steward of our monies and has been proactive in identifying and fixing the many problems encountered daily in a facility the size of Galilee Church. Take a minute to thank Tom. Well done! Jerry Kent Junior Warden
