Dear Parishioners,
Have you ever experienced someone who speaks with authority? I
worked on installing a natural gas pipeline across Iowa 30 years ago. The
project had problems and the manager was replaced half way through the
project. When it was announced that Pete “Bull” Carter was coming up
from Houston, the older guys on the project reacted. They knew he was
coming in to clean up the project. Without saying a word, his reputation
caused everything to function better. Personally, I encountered him twice.
I remember being shocked that he knew who I was and I remember not
wanting him mad at me!
Our Gospel tells us that people experienced this in Jesus. It says, “The
people were astonished at [Jesus’] his teaching, for he taught them as one
having authority and not as the scribes” (Mark 1:22).
One who speaks with authority is a two edged sword. Initially, it is a
beautiful experience: “Wow, I finally found someone in this world I can
trust.” The hard part is that his words matter, they have authority. Even if
you disagree, your conscience does not allow you to dismiss. This is why
Jesus was considered such a threat to “the authorities;” they knew he spoke
with authority and he had to be silenced.
My favorite bible passage is “indeed, the word of God is living and
effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between
soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and
thoughts of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). Jesus as the living Word of God
challenges and reminds me that faith in Jesus is not easy nor comfortable.
He is the word with authority and his word cannot be silenced no matter
how hard I try.
We are struggling with authority today. We do not trust our institutions
or our leaders and they have given plenty of reasons not to trust them. It
appears that the only reasonable track is to trust in yourself.
This is very tempting but I believe it is the temptation of the devil! He
wants us to get so self-focused that everyone else is a threat and/or a
disappointment. How do you overcome such thinking? By accepting the
authority of others.
What does accepting authority look like? Jesus gives us an example
himself. When he was in the garden, we are told that he was in such
intense prayer “that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the
ground” (Luke 22:44). He begged his Father, “If you are willing, take this
cup away from me.” He acknowledges how hard it is to accept the
authority of another. Yet, he expresses his obedience. “not my will but
yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
Throughout this Covid time, I have been tempted to reject many of these
limitations. Yet, Archbishop Jackels asked for a few simple things: wash
your hands, wear a mask, receive communion in the hand, maintain social
distancing, and minimize singing. I had to decide how I was going to
respond. He gave me the opportunity to experience authority from
someone who keeps Christ in mind, at least (I see him praying every day). I
thought that if I practice accepting authority in small matters, I may accept
authority in greater ones. While I am not equating our Archbishop with
God, the opportunity to say to myself “not my will but yours be done” to
the Archbishop will prepare me to say it to God when I encounter him.
Without that practice, I fear I will train myself to reject God because he is a
threat or a disappointment as well.
In Christ,
Fr. David
