Chapter 1: 10 most important ideas
• Rich men = very important (for marriage)• Mr. and Mrs. Bennet – married for 23 years,
have 5 daughters, all live in Longbourn• Mrs. Long – neighbor that brings the news
about Netherfield Park (rented to a rich guy)• Mrs. Bennet asks Mr. Bennet to visit
Netherfield Park to introduce himself• Mr. Bennet = plays with his wife’s nerves,
says he won’t visit Mr. Bingley
Chapter 1: 10 most important ideas
• Elizabeth Bennet = Mr.Bennet’s favourite daughter = the most intelligent•Mr. Bennet: very smart, reads a lot•Mrs. Bennet’s job = to get her daughters married •Mr. Bingley rents Netherfield Park•Mr. Bingley is young, single and rich (£5000/year)
Link to PBA + Habits 1, 2, 3
PBA: Mrs. Bennet has a poor PBA, because she is overly concerned with what is “proper” as opposed to doing the right thing; she does not know her talents and does not use them. She is not gentle with herself – always in the rush, anxious, etc. Habit 1: Mrs. Bennet seems to be proactive because she believes that she can get her girls married to a rich man through her own actions alone. She believes “there’s gotta be a way”.
Habit 2: Mr. Bennet is not in charge of his own life, he lets Mrs. Bennet decide what he must do and doesn’t stand up for himself. (follower)
Habit 3: Mr. Bennet is a yes-man because he just does things to please and calm his wife.
Habit 2: Mrs Bennet pushes Mr. Bennet to visit Mr. Bingley because that is what must be done in order for her daughters to meet him, because she has her eyes on the goal – marriage. (plan)
Chapter 2: CONTEXT

Chapter 2 - 10 most important ideas• Mr. Bennet: first to visit Mr. Bingley (wife
didn’t know)
• Lucas family = friends of the Bennets (Sir William Lucas + Lady Lucas, daughter: Charlotte = 27 y.o.)• Mr. Bingley visits the Bennets; cannot
stay for dinner = business in London• The Bennets : invited to a ball, Mr.
Bingley will be there• Netherfield Park: Mr. Bingley + 2 sisters
+ Mr. Hurst (Mr. Bingley’s brother-in-law) + Mr. Darcy (Mr. Bingley’s best friend)
Chapter 2 - 10 most important ideas
• Mr. Darcy: very rich (£10,000/year) + bad manners• At the party, Mr. Darcy insults Lizzy (says to
Bingley that she isn’t beautiful enough for him)• Elizabeth hears him and is hurt; from now on
she won’t like Mr. Darcy at all• Jane Bennet = admired by Mr. Bingley + his
sisters• The Bennet sisters: Jane (23 y.o.), Elizabeth
(21 y.o.), Mary (19 y.o.) , Kitty (17 y.o.), Lydia (15 y.o.)
Link to PBA + Habits 1+2+3
• PBA: Mrs. Bennet has a poor PBA because she is not happy if others succeed (like when Charlotte dances with Mr. Bingley)• PBA: Mr. Bingley has a positive attitude to
life and so has a good PBA.• Habit 1: Mrs. Bennet is reactive = she
doesn’t take control of her life, just has to wait for ‘men’ to sort out her life.• Habit 1: Elizabeth is proactive: when not
invited to dance she does not sit and wait, she talks to her friend; she becomes reactive when insulted by Darcy.
• Habit 2: Mr. Bingley – plan = vacation, not socializing (Business in London). Same for Darcy (dancing is not important). • Habit 3: Mr. Darcy wants to stay in his
comfort zone (the rich) and he does not change priorities. The Bennets: prioritize the effort to get daughters married (at the party).

Chapters 1-2 and the Public Habits• Habit 4 Mr. Bingley is a win-win type of person because he tries to solve Mr. Darcy’s problem by proposing that he dances with Elizabeth (while Mr. Bingley has Jane) • Habit 5 No-one tries to understand Elizabeth, eg. when the Lucas women and Mrs. Bennet are talking about Mr. Darcy calling Elizabeth not pretty, no-one asks her.

• Habit 5 Neither Mr. or Mrs. Bennet truly seek to understand each other, but Mrs. Bennet always makes herself understood.• Habit 6 Mr. Darcy does not practise synergy, he shuns those who are different to him (at the ball). • RBA Many characters make RBA withdrawals by gossiping (Mrs. Bennet, Mrs. Long, Lady Lucas).
