Events in British Literature

1. 1913- Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (5 act romance). • Eliza Doolittle is used as a science experiment, because a scientist

wants to try to turn her into a Lady. Along the way she falls in love with Freddy, and questions the purpose of the science experiment.

2. 1914- Ulysses by James Joyce (controversial novel). • Judge John M. Woolsey said it was “emetic” (causes vomit) and is a

very dirty novel. It is about vulgarity and Celtic lyricism. There was controversy over whether it should be imported to the U.S. It is a commentary on the inner lives of men and women.

3. 1926- “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. • The story of a boy who has a gift for picking the winning race horse.

4. 1932- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. • A story that warns of a scientifically controlled future society. It also

depicts parts of a totalitarian society.

1949- Orwell publishes 1948 • It is a nightmarish vision of future totalitarian England. Totalitarian is

a government where political authority has all power.
