Meir Dizengoff was born in 1861 in Russia. He made Aliya in 1905. When he got to Israel he bought a house in Yaffa. He became very interested in buying land in Modern day Tel Aviv.

EARLY LIFE

When Tel Aviv became a city in 1922 Meir got elected as the first Mayor. He became very engaged in his dream of making a very big Tel Aviv.

A few years later Meir’s wife died and he moved out of his spacious house. He requested it be turned into an art museum. Today his house is Israel’s Hall of Independence.

A major plaza in Tel Aviv was named after Meir Dizengoff and his wife Zina. There is also Dizengoff street, Dizengoff center and Meir park named after him.

MEMORIALS

Dizengoff Center is a shopping mall at the intersection of Dizengoff Street and King George Street in Tel Aviv. The mall is named for Meir Dizengoff, the first mayor of Tel Aviv.
