About The Summit #BAVegas

Tianhui Michael Li is data scientist at Foursquare where he is responsible for building o u t t h e a d a p t i v e m a c h i n e - l e a r n i n g i n f r a s t r u c t u r e t h a t p o w e r s v e n u e recommendations and ads.  Previously, he has worked at Andreessen Horowitz as a data scientist, Google as a software engineer, D.E. Shaw as a quant, and NASA as a nuclear physicist.   He studied mathematics in Cambridge as a Marshall Scholar and completed his PhD at Princeton with support from the National Science Foundation and Hertz Foundation Fellowships.  As a chronic but grateful recipient of scholarship funding, he is proud to serve on the board of New York Needs You, a non-profit that fights for social-economic mobility for low-income first-generation college students.

Josh Hemann is a Principal Statistician in Activision’s Game Analytics Team, where he builds analytic services that support video game development studios. His industry experience in analytics spans diverse settings such as oil and gas exploration, aerospace, retail loyalty programs, recommendation systems for grocers, and massively multiplayer on-line games. Throughout these settings he has appreciated how much effective visual communication is critical for influencing decisions made by scientists and executives alike. Josh has an MS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado at Boulder where he maintains involvement in air pollution research.

Turning Social Media into Instrumentation

Social media channels such as Reddit and Twitter are increasingly used by players to communicate with   each other as well as Activision and its studios. In this talk I’ll cover several vignettes showing how we try to turn these channels into data we can use to inform decisions affecting Call of Duty®. Along the way I’ll cover specific techniques and software libraries as well as challenges in making this a production service.

Yohan works as a head of data science at Tapjoy, - focus on personalized   mobile advertising, audience targeting, in-app user LTV maximization. His   team works on data science modeling/data science back-end engineering/data   insight visualization. Prior to Tapjoy, he was a lead research scientist at  MySpace, where he led to build personalized music/video recommendation and   multiple other data science products with social networking data. He has   Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Texas Dallas, B.S. from Seoul  National University.

Ali Vanderveld is an astrophysicist turned data scientist. After receiving her PhD from Cornell Un ivers i ty in 2007 she worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and then as a research fellow at the University of Chicago. During this time she worked on several dark energy mission concepts, including the Euclid satellite which is due to launch in 2020. She has been a part of the Groupon Data Science Team since July 2013.
