Stagecoach preferred bidder for EastbourneStagecoach has been named asthe preferred bidder for theEastbourne Buses municipaloperation which operates 45buses. Historically, the companyclaims to have been the firstmunicipality in the world to have

run motor buses, having startedoperating them in 1903.

A Stagecoach spokesman said:'We are pleased to confirm thatStagecoach has been named aspreferred bidder for EastbourneBuses Limited following a

competitive bid process. A finalcontract is subject to further nego-tiations, the completion of legalmatters and approval by theDepartment for Transport, and welook forward to meeting withemployees in due course.'

Solbus seek new partnerThe non-appearance of Solbus(UK) Ltd at the Euro Bus Expoexhibition with the Soltour coachand Solcity bus products was as aresult of the UK company ceasingtrading. Two Soltour ST10 coacheshave been delivered in the UK and11 more have been completedand are ready for delivery, two of

them the longer 11m Soltour ST11model. Jakub told B&CB thatthere were now a number ofoptions, including appointing anew dealership, setting up thecompany's own dealership in theUK or even selling direct fromPoland and appointing local UKservice dealers. World's biggest bus order?The Board of Directors of theRoads & Transport Authority (RTA)of Dubai have approved a deal for1616 new buses, costing £1.53bn(AED8.6bn). It has been claimedthat the deal, which involves five,as yet undisclosed bus suppliers,is the biggest bus procurementdeal ever made, worldwide.

The vehicles will comprise ofsingle deckers, articulated buses

and double deckers. They willmeet Euro4 standards and featureI-Shift transmissions as well asESP vehicle braking and stabilitysystems. On-board, they will beequipped with bus stopannouncement technology, a GPSdevice that tracks buses linkedwith the RTA Control Centre, aswell as external and internaldisplay monitors.

When the deal is complete, thenumber of buses in Dubai isexpected to rise to 2,500 by 2009.There is currently a growingrequirement for buses, triggeredby the increasing population of theemirate, as well as the need for abus feeder service to Dubai Metrostations.

Transdev management movesJoel Lebreton has taken over asChairman and CEO of theTransdev Group, whilst Francois-Xavier Perin becomes Group MD.A number of other moves withinthe Group have also been made,which come into effect on 1January 2009. Current UK Chief,Charlie Beaumont, becomes ChiefOperating Officer for the newlycreated Transdev International

region. He will be responsible forthe group's operations in the UK,Australia, Italy and Iberia. Based inParis, he will become a member ofthe Group Executive Committee.

MD of Transdev London, NigelStevens, will be promoted to UKDivisional Director and CEO ofTransdev plc. He will report toBeaumont and will be responsiblefor all the group's UK businesses.

Replacing him as London MD willbe Paul Matthews, who iscurrently the company'sOperations Director.

Charlie Beaumont, said, 'I amconfident that Nigel and Paul willcontinue the success of Transdevin the UK. The continuity of theseappointments will provide a firmbase for foremost quality publictransport operators.'

Shipp slams anti-bus budgetPeter Shipp, Chairman of EYMSGroup, has expressed anger atproposals in the Government'sPre-Budget report, saying thatsome of the measures are yetanother burden which will have tobe faced by the bus and coachindustry and its passengers.

He commented, 'TheChancellor has added 2p per litreto the cost of our diesel and thereis to be a further 2p added inApril. Together these will add over£0.33 million to our costs in a fullyear. The Chancellor said that theduty increase is offset by thereduction in VAT, but he has con-veniently forgotten that, whilst thismay be true for fuel bought bymotorists, it is not true for busoperators as we already reclaimVAT in full. This comes as a bitterdisappointment just as we weregetting some relief through fuelprices dropping back, althoughnowhere near down to the pricewe were paying in 2007.'

'It is no surprise that we havenot been told if this additional dutywill be refunded to us through thegrant that we get for fuel used on

local bus services, and, if the lastincrease is anything to go by, it willbe three months before theGovernment deigns to tell us. Inthe meantime we have to assumethat we will have to bear thesecosts in full. We had just decidednot to impose the fares increasewhich was budgeted for thismonth, as the underlying cost offuel has been going down, and,although we desperately need theextra revenue, we felt it was not agood time to ask our passengersto pay more. However, in view ofthis Budget statement we will haveto urgently review this decision,and I certainly cannot now rule outanother fares increase in the nearfuture.'

'Whatever eventually happensfor local buses, the extra duty willcertainly have to be paid on coachand express services. The statedintention of the Budget measuresis to help the less well offmembers of our society, butraising bus fares is hardly going tohelp this objective.'

'Also, hidden away on page137 of the Pre-Budget report, the

Chancellor announces thedecision that sounds likely toaffect the basis of that very grantto offset fuel duty that I havereferred to. The Government hasopted for a decision to link thegrant with bus companies'investment in Smart Card andGPS systems, but that stronglysuggests that either the grant willbe cut for operators who do notinvest in these systems, or justmight increase for those who do -

but to get the higher rate of grantoperators will have to spend bigsums of money on these systemswhich are certainly not cheap.Fortunately EYMS has alreadymade this investment so we maybe better placed than some, butthis could be another nail in thecoffin of many much smaller busoperators who simply cannotafford, and do not need to investin, these high-tech measures.'

TfL improves coach parkingTfL have made a number ofimprovements for on-street coachparking in London. The changescome after a public consultationon parking facilities near touristattractions, hotels and theatres onthe TfL Road Network (TLRN).Following the consultation, threenew bays have been introduced inthe capital.

One of the new bays is situatedin Bridge Place, just behindVictoria Station. A new set downand pick up bay has been placedon the west side of the Millbank,close to the entrance of the Tate

Britain. Another parking space hasbeen introduced on the east sideof Millbank, where coaches canpark for free for up to one hour.

The operating times of anexisting loading bay inBuckingham Palace Road, outsideof the Thistle Hotel, have beenextended to 24 hours. Parkingfacilities for The Grosvenor HouseHotel have been enhanced too. Itis now possible to use the twovehicle bay at any time, 24 hoursa day, for a maximum of 20minutes.

Bluestar 18 gains 19%passenger growthEastleigh based Bluestar have achieved19% passenger growth on their 18 route,which runs through Southampton citycentre from Thornhill and Bitterne to Shirleyand Millbrook. The company believes theintroduction of a daytime service every 10minutes, set to a standard, simple route andtimetable, have made the service moreattractive to those who would normally notuse the bus. They believe night buses onFridays and Saturdays has also contributedto the rise in customers.

Bluestar Operations Director, AndrewWickham, said, 'The changes have provedpopular and not just to the over sixties who use their concessionarypasses, as 23% of the new passengers are full fare paying.'

Go North East extendsBargain BusGo North East have teamed up with Blyth based Phoenix Taxis to give itsBargain Bus users the chance to pay for a taxi in advance at the start orfinish of their bus journey. The operator claims that this is the firstpartnership of its kind in the region.

The development is part of a series of improvements to the BargainBus services. A further enhancement includes the addition of two newroutes, one of which is the X44, that travels to Morpeth via Stanningtonstation and Stobhill. The other is the X45, which goes to Ashington viaStannington village, Loansdean, Morpeth and Pegswood. Both operatefrom Newcastle's Haymarket Bus Station and will provide a half hourlyservice to Morpeth.

Additionally, low floor Plaxton bodied VDL SB220 single deckers havebeen introduced for most journeys on the routes. Brand new bargain faresare to be offered, with a £4 day and a £14 weekly ticket available.

Hookways still use DorsetQueen nameAlastair Gray, MD of HookwaysCoaches has asked us to pointout that, further to our news itemon page eight of our 14 Novemberissue, his company continues touse and promote the DorsetQueen name following itsacquisition with the business on 1January 2004. The original depothas been closed but the holiday

programme offered throughoutDorset is marketed as 'Hookwaysincorporating Dorset Queen.'Other names of acquiredcompanies, including Greensladesof Exeter, Jennings of Bude andClassic Tours of Paignton havealso been retained. There is no linkbetween Hookways and RoadlinerPassenger Transport of Poole.

Dear Sir,

I know you do not normally have aletters page in Bus & CoachBuyer, but I would like to brieflycomment on the caption to theUK North bus photo whichaccompanied a Probus piece onthe new Transport Act in your 7November edition.

The caption says that there arerelatively few bad operators, butthe powers to act against themare already in place. I agree, butthe use of a UK North bus phototo illustrate this point is perhapsapposite since the authorities tookan enormously long time to usethose powers to sort out thisparticular operator.

Our Finglands subsidiary borethe brunt of UK North's activitiesover many years, and despitemany formal complaints to theTraffic Commissioner and the PTE

about their activities, it took far toolong for this truly rogue operator tobe taken off the road.

In view of what finallyhappened, I believe there mayhave been other factors at play,but the fact remains that thisoperator flouted the rules for fartoo long and more than any otheroperator I can recall, and didenormous damage not only totheir competitors but also to thereputation of the bus industry as awhole.

That UK North were stilloperating at the time of theLabour Party Conference inManchester was an absolute giftto those at the Conference whowere calling for reregulation.

First to combine WestYorkshire operationsFirst have announced plans to combine their bus subsidiaries in Leeds,Bradford, York, Halifax and Huddersfield into one company. The 1143vehicles in the West Yorkshire operations are still to run from the samegarages, whilst senior staff will be based at each of the locations. Changewill take place in their offices, with the processing of information to becarried out more centrally. The proposals are now subject to consultationwith staff. The company hope to introduce the new arrangements in early2009.

MD of First UK Bus, Nicola Shaw, said, 'We are working very hardagainst a backdrop of our own increased costs to minimise the burden onfare paying passengers. In West Yorkshire we have four companies ofhugely different sizes and each of them has an administrative overhead allperforming largely the same activities. Our proposals are to combine themso we can carry out these functions more efficiently and effectively.'

First make Customer PromiseFirst in Scotland East have launched a Customer Promise initiative, whichis currently being trialled in the Borders area, before being assessed forroll out across the UK. The scheme provides a guarantee about the levelof service customers can expect when submitting comments,compliments and complaints. Almost 40 services are participating in theinitial trial.

The scheme promises to provide high street shopping vouchers topassengers affected by late or early services caused by circumstanceswithin the operator's control.

he bi-annual Irish Coach and

Bus Show held in Dublin and

organised by the independent

bus and coach operators association,

the Coach Tourism and Transport

Committee, was the biggest ever with

plenty of new products on show.

At the opening of the show,

Chairman of CTTC, 'JJ' Kavanagh,

criticised the Irish Government for

withdrawing the fuel rebate scheme

and not coming forward with an

alternative. The scheme, whereby

coach operators receive a rebate on

fuel for certain sectors of work, has

been a key element in the operation of

vehicles and has lead to a major

upgrading of the coach fleet in Ireland.

He pointed out that the decision flew

in the face of the Government's stated

intentions of doing everything possible

to help modal shift from car use to

public transport use. He said that the

industry had stuck to its side of the

bargain by upgrading fleets and the Government

had reneged on its side of the bargain. The CTTC is

to continue to push the Government to introduce

some alternative scheme. JJ also warned the

Government that it must engage fully with the

CTTC in the formulation of the proposed new

Transport Act. The Act, which has been talked

about for some years, and up until fairly recently

was making little progress, has been brought up

the Agenda. Ireland's current Transport Act dates

from 1932! The new Act is widely seen as being

the measure that will achieve the long awaited

breaking of the dominance of the Irish market by

the State run Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann

operations.

The show was officially opened by Paul

O'Toole, CEO of Irish Tourism. He praised the

industry for the way it had transformed coach

travel in Ireland, especially for in-coming tourism,

and acknowledged the great efforts made by CTTC

and its members to raise standards. He acknowl-

edged that, despite tourism enjoying ten years of

growth, the past year had been difficult, especially

with the strength of the Euro against the dollar

seriously affecting in-coming tourism from the

USA. He felt that 2009 would still be a tough year

but a more equitable exchange rate between the

Euro and the dollar should see the US in-coming

tourism business situation ease. He pledged to

work closely with the CTTC and felt the industry

would emerge from the current situation much

stronger.

The strength of feeling between

the independent industry and the

State controlled sector was

highlighted at the exhibition when

three exhibitors were prevented

from displaying vehicles

destined for those two

operations. Volvo tried

to display a Dublin Bus

Volvo Wrightbus double

decker, Westward

Scania were hoping to

show one of the Scania

Omnilink single deckers,

the first in Ireland, and

Bartons were planning

on showing one of the

new double deck VDL

Berkhof Axial 100

express coaches for Bus

Eireann. The show

organisers immediately banned them.

Whilst one has a great deal of

sympathy with the CTTC view,

because it has been fighting at times

very acrimonious battle with the State

run organisations over many years, it

was a shame that visitors were denied

the chance to see important new vehicles.

Vehicle ExhibitsLeinster Vehicle Distributors of Urlingford

had the first stand in the Hall and some

completely new products from new manufacturers

as far as the Irish or UK markets are concerned.

The first of these products were a

pair of coaches produced by TVM in

Slovenia. Leinster has the franchise

for selling these vehicles in both

Ireland and the UK and is to

announce a UK outlet shortly.

The vehicles on show were a 9.6m

Vive TH390 and an 11.2m TLL 470.

The Vive is a luxury midicoach with

seating for 39 or 37 if a demountable

toilet is fitted. It is powered by a rear

mounted MAN 280bhp engine

matched to ZF fully automatic trans-

mission. The seats in the vehicle on

show were by Vogel. The vehicle also

had double-glazing, Webasto air con-

ditioning, independent front suspension, a com-

prehensive Blaupunkt sound and vision system

and an impressive 7.5cu.m of luggage space, even

with the toilet fitted. The overall height is 3.56m.

There is also a lower 3.26m high version available

but the reduced height does mean less luggage

space.

The TTL470 is 11.2m long, seats 47, and is

designed for intercity work. It has the same

MAN/ZF driveline as the Vive and is double glazed

and air-conditioned. The standard of finish of both

vehicles was very good.

Leinster showed another new entrant to the

market in the form of a Farebus Califa, built by

Andecar/Farebus at Cordoba in Spain. The vehicle

The new TVM Vive is a 9.6m midicoach with 39 seats or 37 plus

toilet. It has an MAN/ZF drive line.

The new Farebus from Spain. 12.2m and 13m versions using

MAN chassis are in-build for Leinster Vehicle Distributors.

The new Plaxton Cheetah is sold in Ireland by Barton Coach

Sales. This is a 33-seat version.

on show was a left hand drive example but

Leinster already has 12.2m two axle and 13m tri-

axle versions in build. The vehicles are built on the

MAN R33 (R37) chassis with 400 (460) bhp

engine and ZF AS-Tronic transmission. The 13m

vehicle can seat up to 62. Again the standard of

finish of this vehicle was very good.

Leinster are also distributors for Euro Coach

Builders and showed a V33 Vario 816 minicoach

from that stable.

King Long Ireland has recently been set up in

the Republic to handle the importation of the

Chinese brand. It is part of the Blue Ribbon co-

operation and is run by

operator Roy Kearney of

Cork. On show were two

examples of the Cummins

powered XMQ6127 with ZF

fully automatic transmission.

The vehicles had 53 seats

and continental exits but no

toilet.

Bartons hold a range of

franchises, which was

reflected in their exhibits.

They showed a VDL SB4000

based coach with the

Berkhof Axial 50 body, fitted

with seating for 53. This was

a late substitute for the

banned VDL Berkhof Axial

decker mentioned earlier.

Alongside it was a Marcopolo Viaggio

350, again mounted on the DAF SB4000

chassis with ZF fully automatic transmission. The

third exhibit was a Temsa Safari HD, once again

DAF powered and again with fully automatic

transmission. The coach had seating for

51 and a full touring specification.

Bartons are also the agents

for the Plaxton Cheetah and

showed two examples of the

new version. Both were 33 seat

examples.

Westward Scania is the

importer for the Swedish

products in the Republic and

has been very successful with

both the Irizar bodied PB and

Century models. Indeed, it has

delivered 320 PBs and Centurys

to Bus Eireann in recent years.

Examples of both were shown

but not the more recently

introduced i4 or the

Birmingham Show introduction

the OmniExpress. The PB was a

12.2m two-axle version with

seating for 49, centre sunken toilet and

a full touring specification. The Century

was seated at 53. Westward had

planned to show one of the new Scania OmniLink

single deckers they are supplying to Bus Eireann.

These are the first Scania Omni products

in Ireland and are to operate in Cork. I

asked Pat Carton of Westward Scania

whether they would be bringing

in the i4 or the OmniExpress. He

said that they had not yet made

the decision whether to bring

either to the Irish market but in

any eventuality they would only

bring in one of them, not both.

He felt the market was not large

enough to make stocking and

training to support two additional

models viable.

Esker Bus and Coach/KVChad by far the largest stand

reflecting their major position in

the Irish market. They had a vast

array of product on show but the

major focus was on the new

Riada GT and Riada Classic

models. Riada 816 GT 29-seaters,

many with the exclusive Grand Rally seats, were

shown in the liveries of Enfield Coaches of County

Meath, Chambers Coach Hire of Northern Ireland,

Dial-a-bus of Belfast and Mannings of Limerick. A

Riada 616GT was also on show. It was a 16-seater

for O'Callaghan and Sons of Killarney who already

operate a large fleet of Esker products.

Two of the Camo bodied Riada Classics

mounted on the Vario 816 chassis were on show.

Both featured 33-seats, air conditioning and

double-glazing. One was liveried in the bright

green livery of the wonderfully named Paddy

Barton Coach Sales have sold a number of these Temsa

Safari HD coaches into Ireland.

The Scania PB has proved very popular in Ireland. It is

distributed by Westward Scania.

An 18-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 515 with long

wheelbase, plug door and an extension to create a good

boot. It was built by Esker/KVC.

The new 33-seat Esker Riada Classic has air conditioning

and double glazing.

Optare launched the Versa into Ireland with this 11m

Cummins engined version.

Dualway are to operate this Volvo B9TL with Optare

Visionaire open topped bodywork.

Wagon.

Representing the larger vehicles in their range

were a 35-seat Cimo XL mounted on the

Mercedes Atego 1022L chassis for Digan Coaches

of Athy, a Touring on the Mercedes Atego 1524

chassis with 37-seats and saloon toilet and

another Touring this time with 41-seats for the

Success School of Motoring.

Two examples of the top of the Esker range, the

Divo, were on show. The Divo model has proved

very popular in Ireland. One was a 12.8m two-

axle version

mounted on

the VDL

SB4000

chassis with ZF

fully automatic

transmission. It

was fitted with

57-seats and a

centre sunken

toilet and is

destined for the

fleet of Corduff

Travel. The

other was a

12.2m version

with 55-seats

and a

continental exit.

It was mounted

on the Iveco

EuroRider chassis with 360bhp engine matched to

ZF fully automatic transmission and was for Rose

Travel in Tralee.

KVC, the van conversion arm of Esker, was also

well represented. There

were examples of

the popular

conversion of the

long wheelbase

Mercedes Sprinter

515 with extended

rear end, creating a

good-sized boot.

One had 13 leather

seats and tables and

was for Enfield

Coaches, another

was a 19-seat

version and a third

was a plug door

version with seating

for 18. The rear row

of seats had quick

release fixings for

easy removal to

increase luggage space.

The final exhibit was a

conversion of the Iveco

Daily 65C18 plug door

shell. It was fitted with 18

seats.

MBB, another indigenous Irish

converter, showed two Mercedes-Benz

Sprinter 515s with rear extensions. One

was fitted with 18 Politecnica seats,

Innotrax floor, forced air

system and was for Tony

Bennet of Killeen, Co Cork.

They also showed a Ford

Transit for the Irish Wheelchair

Association. It had seating for

six and an in-board Ricon

wheelchair lift.

PVS from Northern Ireland,

which is associated with

Loughshore Autos, showed a

Sprinter 515 conversion with

seating for 16 and an AVS

extra entrance step. It was

built for Dungannon and District CT.

Their feature was a former service bus,

based on a Vario, which had been

refitted as a Limo with all the usual

paraphernalia

of a dark

interior,

flashing lights

and loud music. It has

been certified for the

carriage of 16 passengers.

However, this has to use

conventional single seats

set along the side walls

because the banquette

type seating used on

similar vehicles on the

mainland are not

permitted in Northern

Ireland. NI requires all

seats to have three point

belts and not lap only

belts. The final PVS exhibit

was a 24-seat conversion

of a Mercedes Vario.

BMC showed three vehicles but nothing new.

The three were a little Nifty or MidiLux, a Karisma

midicoach and an 1100FE schoolbus.

Optare exhibited in its new guise for the first

time. It still seems odd

seeing John Horn

promoting Optare

products. Neither the

new Solo or the

Raptor were shown,

instead they used the

show to launch the

Versa, which was an

11m version with the

Cummins engine and

seating for 35.

Alongside that was a

Toro minicoach on the

Vario chassis and an

open topped double

decker in the City

Sightseeing livery, but

actually operated by

long time East Lancs

customer, Dualway.

The bus was built on

the Volvo B9TL

chassis with seating

for 83 with 51 on the

upper deck and 32 on the lower, plus 14

standees. Four seats are lost if the

wheelchair bay is used. Interestingly, to

give Dualway maximum flexibility, the wheelchair

bay is tracked so seats can be fitted when

operating on private hire work.

Moseley in the South represent the Moseley

companies in Ireland and Allan Vaulter and his

team were present with an impressive 13m Volvo

B12BT with Van Hool bodywork for Pierce

Kavanagh. The coach was to full touring specifica-

tion including 53-seats and a centre sunken toilet.

Representing the Bova range was a Futura. This

was the lower height FLD model with seating for

57. Their third exhibit, the Sitcar Marlin mounted

on the Mercedes Atego chassis, was making a

debut in Ireland. It had seating for 33.

Euro Coach Builders used the show to launch

their prototype minicoach, the Mercedes Vario 816

based Arora 200. It was the same exhibit that had

been shown at Birmingham except that it now

sported a metallic blue livery, which did improve

its looks somewhat. Joe Ferry of Euro agreed that

some of the trim was not to required standard but

emphasised that it was a prototype. He is

The Star of the Show, as it was in Birmingham, was the new

Plaxton Elite Volvo B12B 6x2 shown by new dealer Cronins.

confident that when it goes into production these

problems will have been overcome.

Euro also showed one of their popular Vario

conversions, the 33-seat V33 for Morleys of

Cloghan in Co Donegal as well as an 18-seat

conversion of the Mercedes Sprinter 515 that was

also for Morleys.

Volvo featured one of the new Jonckheere SHV

three-axle B12BT coaches they are supplying to

First's Aircoach operation. I understand that they

are to be used on the Dublin-Belfast and Dublin-

Cork services whilst the Dublin city services will

continue to use the Setra S415HDs. I travelled on a

couple of the Setras and despite the arduous

operation they still look in very good condition.

The Jonckheere has seating

for 53, which drops to 51 if a

wheelchair is carried. The

wheelchair lift is towards the

rear on the nearside.

These are the first

Aircoach vehicles to be

lift fitted.

Volvos other exhibit,

in the absence of the

Dublin Bus decker, was a

9700 Prestige Plus for

Callinan Coaches, who

already operate a

number of them. The

coach was seated at 53

and was to full touring

specification, including

centre sunken toilet and

continental exit. Outside the hall there was

another 9700 proudly promoting it status

as International Coach of the Year 2008.

Volvo also had a B7R with Sunsundegui

body on demonstration.

Alongside Volvo was the star exhibit of

the show, Plaxton's new Elite on the Volvo B12BT

chassis. It was shown on the stand of DermotCronin, Plaxton's new dealer. It was one of the

two prototypes, and had been exhibited by

Volvo in Birmingham. It certainly created a

lot of interest and

Kevin Wood, Plaxton's

Sales Director, was

pleased with the

reaction. He said they

had now perfected

the system for

attaching the side

panel flat rather than

the show exhibit

which was a bit wavy

but that is why you

build prototypes.

Interestingly, the first

big batch of Elite's is

destined for Ireland,

heading for the Logan's

Corporate Coaching operation in Northern Ireland.

Plaxton's other exhibit was a 12.8m Iveco

EuroRider fitted with Panther bodywork and

seating for 61.

The new

Cheetah was

featured on the

Bartons Coach

Sales stand as

they still have

the franchise

for that

product.

Cronin's are

also the distrib-

utors for Van

Hool integrals

in Ireland and

they showed

three

examples. A

short T911

Alicron with

DAF 360bhp engine and six-speed ZF

fully automatic transmission was for Mike

Buckley's Kerry Coaches operation but was liveried

in an all black livery for Jerry Quinlan's Celtic Golf.

Inside it had seating for 24 with sumptuous

leather seats set at tables, a rear saloon toilet and

servery.

A T915 Alicron with 49 seats and toilet avoided

the ban on State company's vehicles, although it

was branded in CIE Tours' livery, because it is

operated by Cronins themselves. Again the coach

had the DAF/ZF drive line.

The third Van Hool exhibit was a T916 Astron

for Collins Coaches of Kiniska in Galway. Cora

Collins, who runs Collins Coaches, is also the CEO

of the CTTC. With 57 seats and a full touring spec-

ification, including centre sunken toilet, this is the

largest coach Collins have ever operated.

Brian Noones have been major dealers in

Ireland for many

years, mounting

an impressive

display of Beulas

and Indcar

bodied vehicles.

The most notable

item was a new

version of the

Beulas Cygnus.

This was a

10.8m model

mounted on the

Iveco EuroRider

chassis with

330bhp engine

and ZF auto box.

It had seating for

47 and was for

Michael Dowling's M&H Coaches fleet in Kilkenny.

Mark Noone pointed out to me that, despite

reducing the size of the coach, they had managed

to retain the 500-litre fuel tank. Appearing with it

were two other Beulas Cygnus Iveco EuroRiders; a

12.2m 51/55-seat version with demountable

toilet and a 12.72m version, which had 57-seats

plus toilet.

The final Beulas exhibit was a 9m Stela

midicoach with seating for 35 on a Mercedes-

From the Indcar range of small vehicles,

Noones showed a Mercedes Vario 816 based Way

with 33-seats, air conditioning and double

glazing; an Iveco Daily 65C18 version with 33-

seats, air conditioning and double glazing, a

similar vehicle with 20 luxurious leather seats and

a third Daily with 28-seats.

Noones also used the show to introduce their

latest product, the Fast Starter. It was the

unit as shown at Birmingham but is destined

to be the Irish demonstrator. It

featured a MAN D08.36 engine,

ZF automatic gearbox, two

doorways and 57 seats.

Underfloor luggage space is

provided.

Setra sell very well in Ireland

and Mike Beagrie told me that they

had had a really good 2008. On

show they had two examples from

the ComfortClass range, both

produced to the excellent show

standard that Setra always achieve.

They were an S415GT.HD with 49-

seats and the new eight-speed

PowerShift system and a

S416GT.HD which also had 49-

seats and toilet.

The Mercedes-Benz arm of EvoBus showed

the same Tourismo for BM Coaches, which had

been seen at Birmingham with 50 seats and full

touring specification, including centre sunken toilet

and continental exit.

Their other exhibit was a Citaro bus and, not

being for one of the

State companies, not

subject to the ban. It

was one of a batch

supplied to Quickpark

for airport to car park

services.

The show was well

supported by the supply

industry with many

companies from the UK

displaying their

products. Amongst

them were: Gorba,

showing their

destination equipment;

Eberspacher, with

heating and air conditioning equipment; Heavy

Duty Parts; Premier Pits; John Groves ticketing

systems; Carlyle Parts; Politecnica Seats; LOOK

CCTV; Clarke Auto Wash; Mobile Brush Washers;

Distinctive Systems with their booking systems;

Beissbarth garage equipment;

Autosound in-coach entertain-

ment systems;

Ardee Coach Trim,

who also had a

couple of

examples of their

re-trims outside

the hall; Adtec

Aeruto, who are

the Irish ZF

agents; Amber

Valley

Developments;

Stertil vehicle lifts;

Fleetmatic

telematics; and a

range of finance

and insurance suppliers.

Outside the hall was a giant

vehicle recovery unit for West Of Ireland Recovery.

I'm not sure whether Volvo were too happy about

the message it sent out though, because its load

was a brand new Volvo 9700 from the fleet of

Callinan Coaches!

Economic climateIreland hit the economic downturn earlier than

the UK. The booming economy has been slowing

dramatically for over a year, seeing a huge decline

in the construction sector and with truck sales well

down. The strength of the Euro against the dollar

also meant in-

coming tourism

dropped,

especially from

the important

US market,

which tends not

to travel

overseas in a

Presidential year

anyway.

However, the

coach industry

seems to have

been much

more resilient

and I found

most people

quite up-beat and feeling that they could ride out

the storm. Let us hope so, because the Irish

industry has come a long way in a short space of

time and it would be sad to see that halted.

As ever, the Dublin Show was a real pleasure,

as interesting for the hospitality and 'craiche', as

for the exhibits. Congratulations to Cora Collins

and Show Manager, Paul Morton, from the CTTC

for an excellent event.

ust as bus operations in the UK are

dominated by big groups, much of the French

bus market is in the hands of a small number

of large companies, most of which also have

interests in the UK. And, just as we have our

trentbarton, EYMS, Rotala, and similar

independent operations, so France has its larger

private operators. One of these is Groupe Lacroix,

which has developed from very humble

beginnings in the private hire market to operate

450 buses and coaches, including one of the

biggest Setra fleets in France.

Origins The company's origins can be said to have

started to 1953 with Henry Lacroix. He owned a

boat building operation that was not doing partic-

ularly well and also had a Volkswagen minibus.

Out of the blue he was asked by a travel agency to

take a party to Scandinavia in the VW and found

he enjoyed doing it. Giving up his previous

profession, he continued to run on his own for a

few years before taking on extra vehicles and

drivers and forming Cars Lacroix in 1963. Around

1969/1970, Transport Citroen, a bus company

owned by the Citroen car company was bought

along with a few bus services. By 1973 Henri had

19 vehicles, still used predominantly on private

hire. All were parked in the back yard of his house

with the living room serving as the office. In the

same year, a small house was bought in

Beauchamp, and this site was gradually developed

to become the nerve centre although maintenance

continued to be done at the family home until

1980, the year after Henri died.

At this stage the business was sold to Jean

Pierre Sellier and his family who started to grow it.

The acquisition came at a time when the Iles de

France region around Paris was rapidly

developing. Under the Selliers, the company

continued to offer private hire services, as it still

does today, but the emphasis changed over-

whelmingly to the provision of regular urban and

intercity bus services.

1993 saw the acquisition of a factory next door

to the Beauchamp site, that had previously been

used to manufacture the braking units for TGV

trains, and a new depot facility was constructed.

By the early years of the new millennium this too

was becoming space constrained and a further

site was acquired next door from a former car

dealership, where another new depot facility was

erected. It was here that I met up with Jean

Sebastian Barraault, President of Cars Lacroix.

GroupWithin the group there are now 11 subsidiaries,

most of which were acquired, though some were

started and some are not vehicle operators. Cars

Lacroix is itself a

subsidiary of

Groupes Lacroix.

There are eight

depots within the

group. Five are

within the

department (like a

county or political

region) of Val-

d'Oise (95) at

Beauchamp,

Cergy,

Vaudherland,

Villeron, and

Ennery; two,

Gisors and

Auneuil, are in Oise (60); and one is at Gournay en

Bray in the Seine-Maritime department (76).

Although the

depots are within

three

departments,

vehicles operate in

six different

departments on a

regular basis.

Group

operations are

split into six key

areas of business.

First among these

is urban and

intercity bus

operation, which

involves operating

routes under

concession contracts to local authorities. Six

companies are involved in this including the main

Lacroix fleet and the Vexin Bus, STAVO, Stivo,

Hortoule and Tim Bus operations.

Next is school bus operation for primary and

secondary schools which is operated by Lacroix,

Cergy Voyages, Grisel and Hortoule. The group has

52 separate school runs involving the carriage of

7,000 pupils daily in 15 towns and villages.

occasional as the French describe it) remained a

core business areas and this involves Lacroix,

Grisel, PNA, Aerial, Hortole and Cergy Voyages.

Only one subsidiary is involved in airport service

work. PNA, based at Roissy, close to the Charles

de Gaulle airport. Amongst the work it undertakes

are round the clock shuttles to the central airport

hub. This is demanding work because of the

importance of passengers arriving on time. A

further aspect of the operation is a contract with

all of the hotels in the Roissy area for shuttle

services.

One of the non-operating divisions is a

network of travel agencies operated under

the Lacroix and Gisel brands. Operating for

ten years, there are four agencies selling

the group's own products as well as those

of others. A full service is offered including

the provision of accommodation, meals

and tours. Although many companies have

pulled out of the travel agency sphere in

recent years in the face of pressure from

internet businesses, Lacroix feel they need

to have this element in their portfolio to

compliment their existing offering and

retain business.

Finally, there is Cite Blue, which provides

transport related services as well as

associated auxiliary businesses. Among the

other tasks it is involved with are the

maintenance of urban furniture, the management

and collection of parking fines and industrial

cleaning. Other possibilities are also being

considered including a transport training centre

that would be of benefit to the group as well as to

other operators.

PhilosophyJean Sebastian Barraault explained some of the

group's goals. Put simply these are to offer clients

optimum quality of service using state-of-the-art

equipment. It aims to be a pro-

active partner prepared to make

suggestions to

the local

authorities it

works with.

Its

competitors

are all big

groups: Veoli;

SNCF owned

Keolis;

Transdev; and

the Paris

municipality,

SNCF, but

despite this he

believes that it

is possible for

a small but

significant private company to not

only survive but do well, both today and

tomorrow. With all of the big groups offering high

tech propositions he says the Lacroix must be able

to offer at least as good. 'We focus our offers on

new technology,' he said. Evidence of this can be

seen, not only in the modern fleet of which more

anon, but in the highly computerised operations

for which the company develops its own software

as a method of differentiating itself. Another

example is in the workshops which undertake

other work on behalf of the local authorities.

An aspect of the technology I liked was a

system to automatically update the list of vehicles

available to go out that automatically logs each

vehicle as it enters and leaves the yard.

Overall fleetThe fleet is very standardized with large batches

of similar buses bought, though there are also

some smaller batches and one-offs. Remarkable

by UK standards is the average age of the

fleet which was only 2.5 years when I

visited, with no vehicle owned more than

five years old.

The predominant make is Setra, a rela-

tionship between manufacturer and

operator that stretches back over 30 years

to the purchase of the first brand new

Setra S130 in 1973, although some

secondhand examples had been operated

previously. In this period, Lacroix have

bought over 650 Setra vehicles.

Specifications are high with a number of

features designed to enhance operation,

passenger comfort and driver safety

including air conditioning, realtime video

surveillance and GPS positioning, with 100

main stops equipped with realtime displays

showing the arrival time of the next bus.

Jointly developed with the Iles de France

authorities is a traffic light priority system so far

fitted to 50 buses and set to be rolled out through

Lacroix is Setra's biggest customer in France. One of the older examplesis this S315NF low floor bus.

Setra MultiClass S417ULs.

the fleet.

For the past 18 months all buses bought have

been to Euro5 emission standards and two EEV

level Heuliez buses are already running with

another two on order.

An unusual aspect of all vehicles in

the fleet is that they have the fleet name

on the roof in bold letters, as well as on

the vehicle sides.

Buses operate to the NF quality

system which dictates quality levels.

Under this, no bus should be more than

three minutes late at a stop and it

should be clean inside with no more

than three pieces of litter on the floor.

The strict criteria are overseen by

mystery passengers.

Cars LacroixThe Cars Lacroix section of the

business operates 155 buses and

coaches and had a turnover in 2007 of

Euros 25m. It operates in four main sectors with

regular line services accounting for the major part,

around 65%, schools 4%, private hire and tourism

15% and vehicle rental without driver 16%.

Of the 155, 109 are low floor buses comprising

42 Setra MultiClass S315NFs, 46 Setra MultiClass

S415NFs, 15 Irisbus Agora artics, three Irisbus

Citelis, two Heuliez GX127 midibuses and a

solitary Van Hool A308 midibus.

Cars Lacroix's 46-strong coach fleet is all Setra,

and is marketed with four distinct levels of

comfort. It includes: 31 cars de tourisme (touring

coaches) with 57-65

seats; five cars Grande

Tourisme with 55 seats; eleven cars Grande Luxe

(three star) with 49 seats, toilet and a high specifi-

cation; and one car Prestige (four star), a very

highly specified S415HD with only 37 seats, tables

and a conference table for corporate work. Within

the cars Grande Luxe category are two 32 seat

Setra S411HD midicoaches and two coaches with

40-seats that fully recline to become beds for

overnight travel.

Setra coaches is an S415HD

that is the first in France to be

delivered to the latest specifi-

cation with front underun protection.

For school work nine Setra S315ULs are used

an Jean Sebastian says that using Setras on school

duties is cost effective because they are also used

on other work.

SecurityAn anomaly of the French system is that bus

contracts the Iles de France area are not yet open

to competitive tendering as they are in

all other areas of France where

contracts are between five and nine

years. Known as 'the Iles de France

exception' the rules were put in place to

protect the municipal RATP operation

but Lacroix benefit too. It was

announced on 3 December 2007,

effective from 3 December 2009, that

the exemption is to end and, following

an eight year transition period that take

them up to 2017, routes in Iles de France

will be open to competition.

Jean Sebastian Barraault was philo-

sophical; 'We don't yet know what the

effect will be when the exception ends.

It could be a big opportunity because it

ends for RATP too and RATP is an

expensive operation. It depends on the law. I can't

predict anything until 2006.'

Last wordI've always found it interesting to see how

operators do it abroad and this operation is a par-

ticularly impressive one. The nature of the

contracts it has in Paris do give Lacroix a huge

degree of security for the medium term and with

the quality of vehicles and service it delivers its

customers are very well looked after.

astrack was the winner of the innovation

and infrastructure awards at last year's UK

Bus Awards. This year the conference to

announce the shortlist for this year's awards was

held at Dartford in Kent and delegates were given

the opportunity to see the system operating and

how it is to be developed.

The whole ethos of Fastrack is to provide high

quality bus services that give a real alternative to

using the car in one of the largest areas of urban

regeneration in Europe. The area is today called

Ebbsfleet but most people will know it as the

swath of land along the edge of the Thames in the

area of Dartford, Greenhithe and Gravesend,

where the M25 crosses the Thames via the Queen

Elizabeth 2 bridge and the Dartford tunnels. This

area was dominated by the huge Tunnel Cement

works and the legacy of

that is two vast former

quarries the West and the

East Quarries.

Regenerating these areas

is a huge project. The

smaller West quarry is

largely completed. I say

smaller but small it

certainly isn't when you

realise that it already

contains the largest

shopping and leisure

complex in Europe - Bluewater. However the

former East quarry is an absolutely enormous

area. Within it, 10,000 homes and 20,000 new

jobs will be created. In addition 2,500 additional

homes are already being built in the existing

towns and a further 6,500 homes are being built

on the Thames waterfront. In total the whole

development will deliver 25,000 homes and

50,000 jobs by 2020.

Right at the heart of Ebbsfleet is Ebbsfleet

International Railway Station, which is already

providing high-speed services to Brussels and

Paris. Brussels is just one hour and 41 minutes

and Paris just two hours from Ebbsfleet but the

real bonus of HS1, the high speed rail link, comes

at the end of 2009 when normal commuter

services from North Kent go high speed

connecting Ebbsfleet with central London in just

17 minutes compared to the current one hour.

This will make the area very attractive to

commuters and international business.

So what is Fastrack?Fastrack will be a network of fast comfortable

bus services linking all the areas together. Already

two routes are operational and more will follow as

development grows. The interesting thing is that,

in most cases, the infrastructure for the Fastlink is

going in before the homes and

businesses are built. This has already

happened with Bluewater and the

new waterside residential area of The

Bridge.

At the same time, priority routes

have been established on the

existing road structure of

Dartford, Greenhithe and

Gravesend. These measures

include completely separate

busways, segregated bus

lanes and priority operation

of traffic signals at major

junctions.

At the moment there are

two routes operating. Route

A, which runs from the

Dartford rail and bus interchange via the

waterside residential development at The

Bridge and the commercial development

at Crossways and Greenhithe rail station

to Bluewater. Route B runs from Temple

Hill and Joyce Green residential areas near

Dartford, via Dartford station, Darent Valley

Hospital, Bluewater, Greenhithe and Ebbsfleet

High Speed Rail interchange to Gravesend. Route

A consists of 2.5km of busway, 2km of bus lanes

and 5.5 km of conventional roads but with

junction priority. Route B has 5.5km of busway,

4km of bus lanes and 4.5km of conventional

roads with junction priority.

The services are operated by Arriva Southern

Counties and are a mix of privately supported

services, Kent County Council supported services

and straight commercial services. The Bridge area

service is particularly interesting because this is

developer supported. That support included

providing a separate bridge link (at a cost of

£8.1m) across the M25 that forms part of the

dedicated bus way through the development.

All the bus stops on the route are of very high

quality and include both real time information and

ticketing facilities that are under constant

supervision by CCTV. The ticketing is monitored all

the time by a control centre set up by the

developer to oversee its investment. It also

monitors the way the buses are running. Arriva

have a similar facility at their Gravesend control

centre using the BusNet system for tracking the

buses. It incorporates a two-way communication

facility with the drivers. This surveillance backed

up by 24hr security teams means that vandalism is

remarkably low. Any damage to bus stops is

repaired within 24 hours. But that is not all, the

new homes in the area all come with a touch

screen which shows when the next bus will arrive

and no home is more than five minutes walk from

a bus stop. Passengers can buy tickets at travel

centres, at bus stops and even via their mobile

phones. The aim is

ultimately for all services to

be operated with pre-

purchased tickets. Route A

already achieves this but

Route B still currently

retains the option to

purchase tickets from the

driver.

Arriva are operating the

services using a fleet of 26

specially branded Volvo

B7RLEs with Wrightbus Eclipse bodies at present.

The buses seat 36 with an additional three tip ups

in the nearside wheelchair bay. Operating from the

Arriva depot at Gravesend Northfleet, they are

equipped with internal and external CCTV, real

time information displays and next stop voice

announcements. An example of the co-operation

that exists between the operator, Kent County

Council, the developers and the Police is the fact

that the police use the services to move officers

around the area and also as a deterrent against

trouble on the buses.

Kevin Hawkins, Commercial Director of Arriva

Southern Counties, said that they operate Fastlink

as an elite service encouraging staff to adopt the

highest standards of customer care. Training is

provided to achieve this end and to build the pride

and ownership which is the key to making services

like this really successful. This has bonuses as it

raises the standards of all the company's services

because those not on the Fastrack team aim to be

and don't want their services to be seen as second

best. There is real competition to be part of the

Fastrack team even

though the pay rates

are just the same.

Have Arriva got

Fastrack right?

Customer satisfaction

at 93% would suggest

they have.

At present, the

service operate pre-

dominantly on a five

minute headway for

Route A and 10

minutes for Route B.

Already Fastlink

carries two million

passengers a year. By

2025 the aim is that it

will carry 30 million.

On the parts of the route that broadly use

existing road systems, extensive use is made of

special busways and lanes for the buses. These

are all equipped with new bus shelters incorporat-

ing real time information. Those on the dedicated

busways also include ticket

machines and touch screen

information points. Interestingly,

when these shelters were first introduced the level

of vandalism was very high but Kent County

Council found that by reacting to the damage

quickly i.e. repairing damage straight

away they found that

the vandalism

dropped dramatically.

It seemed that once

the vandals saw that

they couldn't win

they lost interest and

went somewhere

else.

Inevitably there

have been some that

have said that

Fastlink, especially

the sections that go

through the main

regeneration areas should have

been provided by a tram or light rail system but

David George, the project manager, is adamant

that the bus link was the right course. 'Only the

bus has the flexibility to cope with the inevitable

changes which will occur in a development of this

scale. Remember, we are putting the infrastructure

in first so if someone comes along and changes

things we would be stuck with infrastructure in the

wrong place,' he said. This has already happened.

For the new Darent Valley Hospital a dedicated

busway was built to give front door access to the

new hospital. This was built before the hospital

was built. Between the two events the decision

was taken to move the footprint of the hospital

fifty yards deeper into the site. This would have

been a disaster if a fixed

link had been used

whereas, with the bus

option, that major change

was handled simply.

Fastlink has already

resulted in some major

gains. Most notably that

25% of those using the

services previously used

their cars and there is

factual evidence of people

giving up their cars

completely because they

have no need of them

with the excellent service.

Ultimately, Fastrack will

involve 40km of route

mileage with 75% of it

running on dedicated

busways or segregated

bus lanes.

You cannot fail to be impressed with Fastlink. It

is an outstanding example of what can be

achieved when developers, local authorities,

Government agencies and bus operators work

together on a common goal. It certainly was a

worthy winner of its UK Bus Awards and also

those it received from the National Transport

Awards.

VDO launch improvedtachograph data managerTIS-Web 3 is a new

version of VDO's data

management solution

for downloading,

analysing and archiving

both digital and

analogue tachographs.

It features a new

interface to make

everyday data

management tasks

easier and quicker.

For approximately

80p a week, the device

highlights driver infringements, downloads the contents of cards, reads

analogue charts and analyses all of the data. The technology can be used

to ensure drivers are adhering to legislation and can help optimise vehicle

use. A starter kit is available, consisting of a Download Key II, Smart Card

Reader and free TIS-Web Software. A free three-month trial of the system

New LED Bodyside Indicatorfrom BMACBMAC Limited have released a

newly designed Bodyside

Indicator, designed to ensure

manoeuvring vehicles are more

visible to pedestrians and other

road users. The light features

robust, high power LEDs as its

light source, which provide ten

times more light down the flank

of the vehicle than previous

versions. According to the

company, the light lasts up to

50 times longer than traditional

21 watt bulbs.

The indicator is easily

installed using three screws and

is protected against water and

dirt. It is suitable for 24Volt

applications and meets various

Somerstotalkare S6ng mobile lifting columns to help maintain their

company ethos of keeping

customers happy. The

operator's workshop

caters for its own 35

strong fleet and is also

service and MOTs for

other PSV and heavy

goods vehicle operators.

The S6ng lifts, which have

a capacity of 7.5 tonnes,

are light and easily

manoeuvrable and can be

configured into sets of

four, six and eight.

appointed as the UK agents for the supply of service and spare parts for

German vehicle lift company Hetra Gmb. Hetra customers can now sign

Litelogic signs deal with ArrivaLitelogic, suppliers of digital advertising solutions, have signed an

agreement with Arriva to provide eight Evolution custom LED screen

panels for the company's buses in Darlington and Derby. The high

resolution digital outdoor advertising billboards are fitted with GPS

technology and can be designed to fit various sizes and formats.

The system is powered by the Litecast software platform, which

enables advertisers to buy, schedule and upload advertising instantly via a

secure web interface. The screens' location and status can be monitored

in real-time, with certain displays triggered by the vehicle's current

AVS go for goldAVS Steps have launched a special offer called EX Gold, allowing

charitable organisations and voluntary groups to receive free three-year

roadside warranty cover when the EX Series of electric powered steps are

specified direct or through coachbuilders. The slide-in/slide-out cassette

steps are available in four sizes, with tread widths of 600mm to 1200mm.

The aluminium tread is enclosed in a galvanised steel case. They are self

cleaning and can

be fitted to hinged,

sliding and power

operated doors.

Additional

features include full

automatic working,

automatic step

closure when the

door shuts and

they can have an

illuminated front

edge. Another

option is a touch

sensitive strip,

which detects any

contact with

objects and cuts

the motor. The

steps are the factory fitted product of choice for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Minibuses.

taken advantage of this offer. Their new steps were fitted for free by AVS

Richmonds Coaches receivesB12B AlicronRichmonds Coaches of Royston, Hertfordshire, have added a 12.15m

Van Hool Alizee T9 Alicron to their fleet. Based on the Volvo B12B

chassis, it is specified with a 420bhp Euro4 rear mounted engine

matched to an I-Shift gearbox with intarder. It features 53 Royal class

seats, DDA compliant step strips and handrails, entertainment system,

ASR traction control, as well as Sutrak air conditioning and Webasto

heater. The coach was supplied by Moseley in the South Ltd.

B7R for O'ConnorsO'Connors Coach Hire of Bandon, Co Cork, have taken delivery of a

Volvo B7R Sunsundegui Sideral 10. The 10.3m coach is powered by

Volvo's Euro4 engine rated at 290hp and is matched to a six-speed

automatic gearbox. It features 43 seats, an entertainment package,

Bluetooth hands free mobile phone installation and GPS navigation. The

vehicle was supplied by Volvo Coach Sales of Loughborough.

Travel Wright's first SetraNewark's Travel Wright have bought their first Setra, a 12.2m S415GT HD

ComfortClass, featuring a Mercedes-Benz OM 457 LA 428hp Euro4

engine coupled with a ZF AS-Tronic 12-speed semi-automatic gearbox. It

has a number of safety features, including ESP, Brake Assist and EBS.

The 49-seater has a centre sunken toilet, Webasto heating, ComAir roof

mounted air conditioning and a Coach 2000 multi-media system. The

coach was supplied by Setra Coach Sales.

Hire. The Varios have 20 luxury seats, a huge dropwell boot and air condi-

tioning, along with panoramic windows and full body kit. The Volkswagens

have 16 high back seats, a large boot, full air conditioning and panoramic

windows. The vehicles were converted by Excel Conversions of

Doncaster.

Short Van Hool Alicrons forCity CircleFour 10.5m Van Hool Alicron T911s have been added to City Circle's

fleet. The identical vehicles are powered by Euro5 DAF PR 265 S2

engines, producing 360hp, driven through a six-speed automatic gearbox.

36 reclining seats have been fitted, with a rear floor mounted wash room,

fridge, hot drinks machine, air conditioning and courier seat. The on-

board LCD screen is capable of showing DVD and satellite navigation

displays. The coach was supplied by Arriva Bus and Coach of

Cleckheaton.

Plaxton Volvo for Longstaff'sOne of the first production Euro5 Volvo B12Bs, has been delivered to

Longstaff's Coaches of Amble. The 49-seat Plaxton Panther bodied

coach is powered by a 420bhp engine matched to an I-Shift gearbox and

features air conditioning. It has a personalised number plate, bearing the

letters EL, the initials of owner Fred Longstaff's son. The coach was

supplied by Plaxton Coach Sales of Anston.

Bova Magiq and Alizee B12B for BrooklineBrookline Coaches Ltd of West Malling, Kent, have received a 13.1m VDL Bova Magiq 131.460 MX, featuring a 460bhp DAF MX Euro5 engine coupled

with a ZF AS-Tronic transmission with integral retarder. The coach has ASR traction control, cruise control and a reversing camera. The interior specifica-

tion includes 53 Vogel Conturo reclining seats, tip up tables, entertainment system and water boiler and cooler. The vehicle has air conditioning with

additional heater and a Webasto heater. The new vehicle is seen alongside a pre-owned Volvo B12B Van Hool Alizee T9 supplied at the same time. The

coach was supplied by Moseley in the South Ltd.

Beluga for Mid-Devon CoachesA Mercedes-Benz 0816DT Sitcar Beluga II luxury midicoach is a new

addition for Mid-Devon Coaches of Bow, Devon. It is fitted with a 157bhp

Euro4 engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. It features a Telma CC80

retarder with hand and foot control, as well as an entertainment system,

Pannier lockers, 27 Politecnica reclining seats and Sutrak air conditioning.

The midicoach was supplied by Moseley in the South Ltd.

Solosare afirst forLothianBusesLothian Buses

have added six

new 9.6m Optare

Solo SRs to their

fleet, the first of

this kind of

vehicle to enter

service with the

company. They

are fitted with Euro5 MAN engines matched with Allison 2100 Series

gearboxes. They will run on the MacTour routes 60, 61 and 69 and were

supplied by Optare Sales.

Setras for West End TravelTwo Setra ComfortClass coaches have been bought by Leicestershire's

West End Travel. One is a 12m S415GT HD fitted with the Mercedes-

Benz OM 457 LA 428hp Euro4 engine matched to a ZF AS-Tronic 12

speed semi-automatic gearbox and has 49 Nimbus seats. The other is a

13.02m tri-axle S416GT HD, fitted with the same specification as the

S415GT HD. With 49 seats, extra legroom is achieved through its

additional length. A safety feature of the vehicle is Proximity Distance

Control. The coaches were supplied by Setra Coach Sales.
