BURN SURVIVOR GUEST SPEAKERSThe amazing and inspirational Donna Maria Gregory-Marshall presented on behalf of the BSG today to students at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic who are progressing through a new health degree, BSC of Community Health, enabling students to become health professionals that can work from a multidisciplinary and strengths based perspective to enhance the well being of all in the community with specific emphasis on the

needs of Maori. They are looking at not only the medical side of burns but the psychological impact and the challenges burn survivors face. We are so proud of you Donna Maria Gregory-Marshall for both having the courage to represent and providing such vital education to those that will provide support to our communities in the future. As a result of Donna Maria Gregory-Marshall presentation the BOP polytechnic were so impressed that they are considering choosing us as their charity and will be promoting the BSG in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas.

Congratulations to the Royle Epsom Bridge Club and especially to the club owner, Angela Royle, who organized a 24 hour Bridge Marathon on Friday/ Saturday 11th/12th June in the clubrooms. The event raised $7245 for children with severe burns injuries who go to a camp in Albany each January where they meet up with others who have suffered such similar traumatic experiences and attend confidence workshops and have fun activities. Bridge players just love playing bridge. So, what better way to raise money for this most deserving cause? 121 players took part, the majority of whom came from the Royle Epsom club though others came from the Akarana, Auckland, Franklin, Howick and Waiheke clubs. What a wonderful way for bridge players to show they are part of a wide community and to help those who have had a very rough time. The idea came from Epsom club member Julie Nicholls who has worked for 11 years at the Middlemore Burns Unit. Burn Support Group is very appreciative of groups like this that continue to support us in our mission to support burn survivors. Thank You!!

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO KEEP THE KIDS BUSY DURING THE HOLIDAYS? There are PLENTY of activities in the Entertainment Book. There are digital and

PHOENIX SOCIETY WORLD BURN CONGRESS ATTENDEES Thank you to all the people that sent in submissions for the amazing opportunity to attend the World Burn Congress in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

We had a variety of applications from burn survivors, parents of burn survivors, and volunteers. All were as worthy as each other and made it a very hard decision for our board.

A huge congratulations to the following people who will be representing Burn Support Group.

P a u l a n d s o n J a c k Dragicevich are long time supporters of Burn Support Group. Jack has been at tend ing our Chi ldren’s Camp for three years and Paul is a member of our board. Jack was burnt just

before his 3rd birthday from boiling hot water out of a microwave, he is now 10 years old and has lived with scars to 11% of his body for the last 7 ½ years. Jack says “to be able to go to the WBC with my Dad would be like a dream come true and something I would never forget. I really want to be able to use my confidence to help other kids at the congress and I want to learn lots and come back with lots of information so that I can help the kids who have been burnt in NZ”

Louise and Jorja Sharp are mother and daughter from Auckland. Jorja was burnt by a hot cup of tea at 18 months old. She has attended three of our Children’s camps, and spoken at our Charity Night. Jorja is a well adjusted young lady but

would like to attend the WBC to meet other burn survivors. She would l ike to speak publicly about dealing with scars and her experiences.

Louise would like to use World Burn Congress as a fact gathering mission to find out how other countries or groups deal with supporting their burns survivors and families, what works and what doesn't and how would it suit or

work for us in our special country?

Michele Henry is our Burn Support Group administrator. It its essential that Michele comes to understand how better to support our NZ Burn survivors and their families. By attending workshops, she can incorporate these into practices back home.

Tracey-Maree was burn at 6 months old when she pulled a jug of boiling water over herself. This has left third degree scarring on her left arm, left leg, neck, right arm and all over her chest down to her midriff. However, she says that her ‘non visible’ scars are tucked away in her soul. Tracey-Maree now finds herself mentoring others with her message “beauty is skin deep, beautiful is soul deep” Tracey-Maree describes speaking at our Charity Night one of her proudest moments. Her daughter Brooke (Miss North Harbour) is following in her footsteps choosing BSG as her chosen charity. We are sure that Tracey-Maree will fully embrace the WBC.

Phoenix World Burn Congress is an annual, international conference that brings together burn survivors, their families, caregivers, burn care professionals, and firefighters. People come together to offer support, increase their knowledge of burn recovery, and share inspiring stories. For many burn survivors, it is their first opportunity to connect with others on the journey of burn recovery. Through workshops, speakers, and peer-to-peer dialogue, people come to better understand the issues that impact the lives of burn survivors.
