The most common cable found in Local Area Networks is the UTP cable. This

%n this lab !ou will make a UTP network cable" and a UTP crosso#er network

cable" and then use the crosso#er cable to connect two PCs together to

transmit and recei#e data o#er a small peer,to,peer network.

/. Cut the appropriate length cable with wire cutters.

1. 2n one end of the cable" strip approimatel! three 3uarters of an inch

off of the outer 4acket eposing the eight colored wires.

5. To make a regular UTP cable" arrange the wires in the following order

from left to right$

//. Take two PCs and connect them from N%C card to N%C card with the UTP

crosso#er cable.

/1. 2n both computers enter the ?2' Command Prompt b! clicking on

@'tart" @Programs" @Accessories" @Command Prompt.

/5. T!pe @ipconfig and press @nter to find the %P Address of both

computers.

%n this case the %P Address is @/1.1)5.:.///. %f no %P Address appears or if

it appears as all >s" go to step /) to load the TCP%P Protocol.

/-. To #erif! that the computers are indeed connected we will ha#e them

Dping eachother. T!pe @ping /1.1)5.:./// ;replace m! %P Address with

!our %P Address6 and then press @nter. ?o this to both computers" but

do not t!pe the %P Address of the computer that !ou are currentl! on"

rather t!pe the %P Address of the other computer. %ts like calling

someone. The %P Address is like the telephone number of the computer"

so if % want to call !ou % ha#e to dial !our number" not m! own. Eou should

see something similar to this$

Notice that the host computers %P Address is still posted on top"

@/1.1)5.:.///" but % Dpinged the other computers %P Address which was

@/1.1)5.:./1> and got a response. ?o this with both computers. %f it works

then proceed to step 1=.

/9. Click the @%nstall button. The @'elect Network Component T!pe bo will

will take !ou back to the screen depicted in step /=. %f !ou still do not

ha#e all three items proceed to the net step" otherwise skip to step 18.

networking. Click @Close and then go back to the beginning of step /1.

1=.Now we will use another method to see what computers are on thenetwork. Close all open windows. ?ouble,click on the @(! Network Places

icon on the desktop and something similar to this should appear$

51.?ouble,click on the @(icrosoft indows Network icon and a list of all

the workgroups in !our network will appear. %t will look similar to this$

55.?ouble,click on the workgroup !ou wish to #iew and !ou will see a list of

all the computers network names that are acti#el! in that workgroup. %f

!ou wish to #iew shared information on a specific computer all !ou ha#e to

do is double,click on it from this screen and use it like it were on !ourlocal computer if !ou ha#e the appropriate network securit! clearence.

5-.Now that we ha#e #erified the connection" we will use the connection to

map a network dri#e" but before that can be done we must share a dri#e

to be mapped to. ?o the following steps on both computers. Close all open

windows. ?ouble,click on the @(! Computer icon on the desktop. This will

bring up a screen that shows all of the disk dri#es on !our computer" like

this$

5).*ight,click on the @Local ?isk ;C$6 icon and select @Properties from the

pull,down menu. This displa!s the hard disks properties window that

pro#ides information about the local hard disk$

58.Click on the @'haring tab towards the top of the window. This will displa!
