Note of the Night

SECOND ALL-TIME

- Nicklas Backstrom is expected to play in his 984th career game tonight against Buffalo, passing Calle Johansson (983 games) for the second-most

games played in franchise history.

- Excluding the Vegas Golden Knights, the Capitals will become one of three franchises to have each of their top-two leaders in games played on their

active roster (Washington: Alex Ovechkin and Backstrom; Pittsburgh Penguins: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin; Winnipeg Jets: Bryan Little and Blake

Wheeler).

- Backstrom is the franchise's all-time leader in assists (704a) and ranks second in points (957p).

- Backstrom leads the Capitals with 30 points (10g, 20a) this season, which ranks 12th in the NHL.

- Backstrom has 158 career multi-assist games, which is the second most in the NHL since Backstrom entered the League (Sidney Crosby: 168).

- Backstrom became the first player in franchise history to reach the 700-assist mark on March 5 against the Boston Bruins.

- Backstrom became the second fastest active player (Sidney Crosby, PIT: 856 games) and the 23rd fastest player in NHL history to reach the 700-

assist mark, doing so in his 979th career game.

- In addition, Backstrom became the 25th player in NHL history to reach the milestone before his 1,000th NHL game. Of the 24 players to accomplish

this feat, 23 are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Top Caps Facts

GREAT 8

- Alex Ovechkin has 10 goals this season and sits two goals shy of passing Phil Esposito (717g) for the sixth-most goals in NHL history.

- Ovechkin's most recent goal on Saturday against Philadelphia marked Ovechkin's 263rd career power play goal, making him three shy of passing Brett

Hull (265) for the second-most power play goals in NHL history.

- Ovechkin recorded four shots on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers to record his 5,639th career shot, passing Jaromir Jagr (5,637 shots) for the

second-most shots in NHL history in 558-fewer games played.

- Since 2005-06, Ovechkin enters today's game with 1,910 more shots than the next-closest player (Eric Staal: 3,729 shots).

- Ray Bourque ranks first in NHL history with 6,209 shots in 1,612 games. With a 4.80 average shots per game rate, Ovechkin will pass Bourque in 119

more games. That would mark Ovechkin's 1,294th career game, 318 fewer games than Bourque.

- Ovechkin has scored against 145 different NHL goaltenders. There have been 6,470 players in NHL history who have scored 145 or fewer goals in

their career.

- Ovechkin’s career 0.61 goals per game rate (716g in 1,175 games) is the highest among the NHL’s eight players who have reached the 700-goal

milestone.

- Ovechkin has 146 career multi-goal games, 62 more multi-goal games than the next-closest player since Ovechkin's rookie season in 2005-06 (Sidney

Crosby: 84). That's more multi-goal games than 2,617 players have total goals during that span.

- Ovechkin’s 15 career 30-goal campaigns trail only Gartner (17) for the most in League history. Additionally, his 15 consecutive 30-goal seasons are

tied with Gartner (1979-80–1993-94) and Jaromir Jagr (1991-92–2006-07) for the longest such run by an NHL player.

- At 1,298 career points (716g, 582a), Ovechkin is three points shy of becoming the 35th player in NHL history to reach the 1,300-point mark. He is

looking to become the 20th player in NHL history to reach the mark in fewer than 1,200 games played, and only Brett Hull (705g) reached the mark with

at least 700 goals scored.

NICE AND KUZY

- Evgeny Kuznetsov sits one point shy of his 400th career point (122g, 277a).

- Kuznetsov would become the 18th player in franchise history to reach the 400-point mark.

- Should Kuznetsov record a point tonight against Buffalo, he will become the seventh player in franchise history to reach the mark before his 500th

game (Kuznetsov: 497 games). Kuznetsov's 0.80 points per game rate will be the 10th-highest rate among Capitals with 400 points.

- Since Kuznetsov's NHL debut on March 10, 2014 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kuznetsov ranks fourth among players with at least 200 games

played in assists per 60 minutes of five-on-five play (1.57), only trailing Connor McDavid (1.81), Artemi Panarin (1.62) and Mitchell Marner (1.60).

- Kuznetsov's 174 assists at five-on-five during this span ranks first on the Capitals and fifth in the NHL.

TEAM PLAY

- With a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday night, the Capitals are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. During that span, which began on Feb. 23, the

Capitals are tied for second in the NHL with a .850 point percentage, tied for fourth in goals per game (3.50) and are 13th in goals against per game

(2.70), through games played March 13.

- During this span, Washington is allowing 28.7 shots per game, the eighth-lowest rate in the NHL, while their expected 1.75 five-on-five goals against

per game is the third-lowest in the NHL, through games played March 13.

- Washington ranks second in the MassMutual East Division with a 17-6-4 record (38 points). The Capitals have a record of 6-3-3 record against the

New York Islanders, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins, the remaining top-four teams in the division, which equates to a .625 points

percentage. That’s equal to 102 points in an 82-game season.

- The Capitals did not have a full lineup from Jan. 22 through Feb. 7. In games this season where the Capitals had a full lineup available to them without

injury, illness or personal reasons, Washington is 10-3-3, good for a .719 point percentage, which equates to 117 points in an 82-game season.

SAMMY

- Ilya Samsonov improved to 5-0-1 on the season on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

- Since returning from COVID protocol, Samsonov has a record of 4-0-0 with a 2.50 goals against average and .915 save percentage.

- This season, according to Natural Stat Trick, Samsonov has a .867 save percentage at five-on-five in high-danger areas, which ranks 10th among

goaltenders with at least seven games played.

- In 28 career starts, Samsonov is 20-5-3, which equates to a .768 points percentage.

THREE BACK-TO-BACKS

- Tonight's game is the first of three straight sets of back-to-backs the Capitals will play from March 15 through March 26.

- This marks the first time the Capitals have played three straight back-to-back sets since 2010-11 from Feb. 16 through the 26th. This will mark the 23rd

such occurrence in franchise history.

- This season, Washington is 5-1-0 in their three back-to-back sets and a combined 30-15-7 in back-to-back sets over the last three seasons.

SUPER CARLY

- John Carlson is two assists shy of passing Mike Gartner (392a) for the fourth-most assists in franchise history.

- Carlson recorded two assists on Saturday against Philadelphia. Carlson has 31 multi-point games dating to the start of 2019-20, 12 more than the next

closest defensemen (Roman Josi and Victor Hedman), and Carlson is tied for ninth among all players and leads the Capitals.

- This season, Carlson is tied for third among defensemen with 24 points (6g, 18a). He is also tied for first with 16 even-strength points (3g, 13a).

- On March 11 against the Flyers, Carlson recorded his 500th career point (111g, 389a). He became the third-fastest active defenseman to reach the

500-point mark (Erik Karlsson: 613 games; Kris Letang: 753 games), doing so in his 783rd game. He is one of 10 active defensemen to reach the

milestone.

- Carlson is three goals shy of passing both Mike Green (113) and Calle Johansson (113) for the third-most goals in franchise history by a defenseman.
