BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER EAT THE CRUSTS, THEY'LL MAKE YOUR HAIR CURLY As I look back on my childhood a few memories stand out clear and bold. At the supper table when I left the crusts of bread on my plate, Dad would say, "Eat the crusts, they'll make your hair curly." He said it with a twinkle in his eye and I knew he was joking -- and he knew I knew he was joking. But for someone with straight, stringy hair, I thought what if Dad was right. So I obediently ate the crusts. I ate and ate and ate those crusts and never got curly hair. But I did learn to like the crusts. My dad said a lot of things. Sometimes he was joking and sometimes he was serious. I always knew the difference. He was a man of few words, but his words were forceful. As we celebrate this Father's Day, I wonder how many words we remember from our fathers. This chronological age list is what one person believes to be our thoughts on father-child relations. I believe it speaks for many of us. Age 4 My Daddy can do anything. Age 7 My dad knows a whole lot. Age 9 Dad doesn't know quite everything. Age 12 Dad just doesn't understand Age 14 Dad is so old fashioned Age 17 That man is out of touch Age 25 Dad's okay Age 30 I wonder what Dad thinks about this? Age 35 I want to get Dad's input first. Age 50 What would Dad have thought about that? Age 60 I wish I could talk it over with Dad once more “Listen, my child to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.” -Proverbs 1:8-9 Pastor Bonnie 1

VBS - SonCanyon That’s right! It’s time once again for Vacation Bible School! This year’s VBS begins on Monday, June 17 from 9am-noon (at the church) and runs through Friday, June 21. There are classes available for children up to the age of 11. Anyone older than that is invited to come and help out the VBS staff! Just like last year, this year’s VBS will feature a “general store” type of place where the kids can redeem their earned “coins” for Christian-themed trinkets or nutritious snacks. Other events include recreation, music, and we will also be having class competitions for this year’s fundraiser (sponsoring one or more children from Africa). VBS 2002 is certainly shaping up to be an exciting event! For more information, contact VBS director Tammy Louthen or co-director Tim Schnepp. They will answer any questions you have. A note will be sent home with the kids on the first day of VBS that will have more details. And, as usual, make sure that your child brings a white T-shirt for him/her self for the arts and crafts station. Finally, be sure to tell everyone else you know about BCUMC’s VBS! We are hoping for a big turnout! If you have one or more children who will be coming to VBS, please take a moment to fill out the registration form on the next page of this newsletter. This will help us get a rough estimate of how many to expect! Forms will also be placed at church and latecomers will be able to fill a form out when they arrive at VBS!

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!!

AFRICA COMES TO BUCK CREEK The rain was pouring down as we arrived at Buck Creek UMC on April 27th, for the Missions FUNdraiser. What a FUN adventure awaited us as we stepped inside... Missions team member Ruth Davidson explained how the FUNdraiser would work, and gave an opening prayer before introducing special guest James Bukari his wife Ruby and son, who are from Ghana. James spoke to us on how missionaries changed his life: “It's very special to be here. God gave himself for the salvation of entire humanity. The Lord did it for us. It's nothing we can do for ourselves. The certainty of a home, the assurance of a life comes from God himself. The Lord tells us with all authority to go and make disciples in the world. He says, "I

will always be with you." It is a challenge to Christian believers to make disciples. This is not an easy job, as the world is filled with wolves and evil forces. You have to stand-up to them. The great Lord Himself overcame death and sent us the Holy Spirit down to be with us no matter what the situation. I feel privileged and special for God calling me into His Kingdom and His world. However I wouldn't be here

in America with my family without the missionaries. I was one of those

children trying my luck in school when a missionary found me, and got to know me, and I got to know about Jesus. Life there is not like here. To survive is a daily struggle. After this physical life there is a better life. A natural man is self centered and doesn't know Jesus or serve his neighbor as a saved man does. There is a mission of touching hearts over seas, oceans, and denying comfort, that missionaries have. If it were not for the American missionaries we took care of me in my childhood, I would have had no college. I am thankful for this nation---a peaceloving and generous country. I know America was founded in love.” James shared the story of a Sunday morning when as a child he was getting dressed for Sunday School. His father was an idol worshipper with three wives. He yelled at James and told him he should be helping him with the work, and slapped him across the face with a chicken he was roasting. James changed his clothes and helped his father, He was a good son, but still knew the Truth. No idols for James. He had Jesus in his heart. James & Ruby also sang a song in their native languages for us. After the opening, we started our African adventure. Where to go first? Around my neck was my "passport" which had 5 stations listed. How about GAMES & MUSIC? Ken Hance showed us the African games of Mancala, Ati Dada, and Stones which is a very common childhood game in Africa, and is played like our "jacks" only with colored stones. You must throw your marble up in the air, and attempt to grab as many of your stones off the ground as you can before catching the marble. Fun! Ken also showed games of movement, and had African music playing. It would have been fun to stay here longer, but there were 4 stations left! Since the food tasting wasn't quite ready yet, it was on to STORYTELLING. Among zebras, lions,

tigers, giraffes and monkeys, the kids AND adults were all enjoying themselves listening to Michele Mitchell read African tales. One was about the adventures of an African black-widow spider named Anansi. Another tale was that of Mufaro and His Beautiful Daughters. It just let us know that storytelling goes around the world. No matter what your culture or customs, we all have stories to tell. Food tasting is almost ready, but it's on to the COMMUNICATION room with Tim Schnepp now. Tim had a list of 58 Ishe Anesu children who would like a pen pal. The children are about 6-15 years old from Zimbabwe. Children or adults can sign up to be pen pals. The names were provided by our missionaries the Humbanes. Several BC kids have signed up so far. Contact Tim if you'd like a pen pal! At Tim's station he showed some
