UMC NEWSLETTER

OUR CHRISTIAN FLAG

Ever wonder about the Christian flag that stands in the corner of the sanctuary? The flag is white, with a blue canton (that's the square at the top) which contains a red cross. The colors remind us of Christ: The white represents the purity of Christ; the red cross symbolizes the blood Jesus shed for us; and the blue is for the royalty of Jesus, the King of Kings.

An idea for a Christian flag first came about in 1897. There was a Sunday School superintendent named Charles Overton who had to fill in for a lecturer who didn't show up. He was inspired by an American flag hanging outside the church, and asked the students what a Christian flag might look like. Years later he thought about that day again, and in 1907 he and Ralph Diffendorfer designed the flag we see today.

The pledge I learned when I was young:

UMC NEWSLETTER BUCK CREEK

I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag and to the Savior for whose kingdom it

stands; One brotherhood,

uniting all Christians in service and

in love. Amen.

CATCHING UP WITH PAST PASTORS Rev. John E. & Joann S. Hoadley

Thank you for the fine church newsletter with photos of your many interesting outreach activities, the names of some very active, special church folks from the 50's,and the fine IN Annual Conference report by your lay rep. So much happening, it's exciting to read! Since March 16 this year, Franklin United Methodist Community, 1070 W. Jefferson St., Franklin, IN 46131 is our home. Currently serving: Because we are dealing with Jack's early Alzheimer's disease as a team, the service we render is confined to our neighbors in the community, Franklin Grace UMC where we attend and support UMW, Sunday School, special youth events, and the community food pantry. Highlights since 1955 - Our three children are living in Pearl City, Hawaii (Oahu), St. Louis, Missouri, and Concord, California. Our two granddaughters are 20 and 18, attending Community College in Hawaii. After 22 years in active pastorate, Jack moved into State of Indiana Dept. of Aging & Aged with Governor Otis Bowen for 11 years, followed by 7 years as Riley-Lockerbie Ministries Chaplain to low income federal housing residents, then his final year pasturing at Stinesville & Simpson Chapel, for a career of 41 clergy years.

4

Fond memories of BCUMC - We remember BCUMC welcoming Garrett Seminary student Jack in 1952 as a single, teaching him the keys to serving the Buck Creek congregation, welcoming his bride Joann as a new member in '53, celebrating Jack's seminary graduation and ordination in '54, then one more year full time before being transferred to Rising Sun. Your loving support in those amazing early years of our growing, maturing, and becoming was so helpful and appreciated. Post Card Note - How blessed we are to be in touch with Buck Creek folks again this summer, our 56th year of marriage. In October 2008 we were happy to be included in your celebration of 100 years with the active congregation steadfastly following Jesus the Christ under the capable, energetic leadership of Pastor Monical. Now we look forward to your continuing, active future. Congratulations, Pastor Dwight and all of Buck Creek's enthusiastic, caring leaders, musicians, and praying members. We notice that your supportive mission efforts continue today and that Buck Creek UMC provides a strong influence in your community.

Best wishes always, Joann & Jack

FIVE QUESTIONS This month we get to know husband & wife Bill & Coley Sharp a little better!

BILL SHARP

1. You and Coley’s wedding anniversary is September 2nd, correct? How many years have you been married and where did you get married? Yes---we got married on Sept. 2, 1966, (almost 43 years now) at Kossuth St. Baptist Church, in Lafayette. 2. Tell us about your family (sons, grandchildren, pets)… Matt and Mike. Matt lives in San Francisco, and works for Apple. Mike is married to Lana, and they live in Catonsville, MD, near Baltimore. Their son, Elijah (Eli) is almost 8, and daughter Annabelle (Anna) is almost 4. We have two dogs---a blonde male Cairn Terrier named Skyler, and a black female Scottish Terrier, named McKenzie. 3. What is something most people don’t know about you? My dad worked in a greenhouse in Bluffton (that’s where I grew up) for Johnny Shoemacher. When Johnny retired, he & his wife Edna moved to Buck Creek, near Edna’s sister, Edith, & husband Virgil Underhill. (Edith was later widowed, and later married Bill Kirkwood.) My parents later moved to Lafayette, and I met Coley after that. Then we married, 6 years

6

later moved to our house where we are now (in 1972) and started attending BCUMC in 1979. Thus our earlier Buck Creek connection! 4. How do you take your coffee? With sugar and cream. 5. If you could change one thing about the church building for the better, what would it be? Replace the stairway with a wider, safer stairway. COLEY SHARP

1. Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born at Home Hospital here in Lafayette. Grew up on South 29th St., next to Kossuth St. Baptist Church, before it grew enough to own nearly the whole block! My parents were charter members there, and we attended until 1979. Bill & our boys and I started coming to BCUM after that. 2. Who is older---you or your twin Kathy (by how much)? I’m the oldest, by 22 minutes! Nobody was expecting to find another baby, but after I was born, the doctor thought there was another baby to be born next. I weighed 4 lbs. 13 oz. and Kathy weighed 5 lb. 7 oz. We are fraternal twins. 3. You are one of the past BCUMC Choir directors, and we see you playing cello in the Praise Band. What other musical instruments do you play and what is your favorite song to play on which instrument? I like to play piano too, and hymns are what I really love to play the most---especially “Wonderful Grace of Jesus”! It’s in the Green Hymnal, page 205. 4. What color is your toothbrush? Currently I’m using a blue/white toothbrush. 5. What would you say to someone thinking about joining Buck Creek UMC? I would encourage them and welcome them to become part of our church family!

In 8 years (2001-2008) of collecting socks for the kids at Lebanon Children’s Home, the total pairs of socks donated equals 3542 pairs! Ladies Missionary Society has a two-year goal for 2009-2010, to reach pair number 5,000. If we subtract 3542 pairs from 5,000 pairs, that equals 1458 pairs yet needed to reach that 5,000 pair goal! Divide that by two years, that’s 729 pairs needed this year. There are baskets for sock collecting at the church. Monetary donations are also accepted, and LMS will use it to purchase socks for the kids. Sock delivery is scheduled for December 12, 2009. Thank you in advance for your socks donations!!

This year, socks will be donated in memory of Nadeania L. Smith, Derek Liphard, Lillie E. Patrick, Barbara Simmermon Fisher, Lois E. Underhill, Harvey R. Balser, Michael A. Mydeggar, Carl Dean McIntosh, Ruth "Red" M. Pierce, Lorabell Whaley, Lowell "Gene" Eugene Frick, Rosemary Catherine Gentry, Keith W. Amstutz, John Paul Jones, Mable Anna Fields, Patrick John Flanagan, Charlie N. Younker, Mary Jo Knochel.

H.A.W.C.s IN THE GARDEN

This summer, it was discovered that the 3 tall wooden crosses in the memory garden, that have stood beside BCUMC since 1991 were deteriorating at their bases. Read about the group effort to get them repaired and the garden spruced up… H.A.W.C's AKA "Heart At Work for Christ" the Great Banquet Reunion Group. That meets every other Tuesday at 5:15. At this time our group includes Jane Arnold, Suzann Brouwer, Trudy Germain, Pam Church and myself Donna Payne. At one of our first meetings Suzann Brouwer suggested cleaning up the "Memory Garden". So at our next meeting we met at Trudy's house and had a fabulous dinner. By the way Trudy is a great hostess and cook. We left her home and headed for the church. In hand and tow we had garbage bags, gloves, a rack, hand shovels, and other items needed

to pull weeds and pick up leaves that had blown under the ramp. While we were pulling weeds I had noticed some rotten wood around the base of the Crosses. My husband and I had the same problem with our deck at our house. It was a combination of age and damp ground. I think we all saw quite a few bugs in the dampened wood, so over the next week I went over and sprayed bug killer. When we received the blessings of trustees Nancy B and John Metro to do what we could to fix the problem. About 10 days later on a Saturday afternoon Jeff (my husband) and myself spent that Saturday working on digging out, putting in forms and mixed up 400 pounds of concrete, It was one of those hotter days of August. In God we trust.

MISSIONS MEMO: 5 WAYS

1. Green jars collection (which are passed each Sunday) year-to-date is a total of $603.21. This money is donated to Food Pantry.

2. August was Food Pantry collection month. Boxes and cans of food have piled up at the church. Thank you for being so generous. One can of food can make a dif-ference! Thanks to Diane White who will deliver the food collected to the Food Pantry.

3. YES kits are being filled as fast as they are made available. Kits are due at church on Sunday, September 6th. Thank you for all the ones that have been filled. We’ll have a total for you next month.

4. Blood drive at BCUMC after church on Sunday, September 13th, at 12:30pm Date & time to be verified.

5. Kentucky Mt. Mission truck will visit BCUMC on either September 21, 22, or 23. If you need to get into the church to leave off your donations, please contact Bob Shepard.

There are 5 missions mentioned above, a lot in a short period of time.. I can’t thank you enough. These are 5 ways we have to spread Jesus to people who might not know Him. Matthew 5:13-16 says: 13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Let our lights shine! It’s something everyone can do. Every man, woman and child, rich, poor, big or little. Anyone can do missions.

RECIPE CORNER Woe to him who builds his realm by unjust gain to set his nest on high, to escape the clutches of ruin! -Habakkuk 2:9

WASP'S NEST CAKE

A four ingredient recipe! First read about it in a Guideposts magazine, saying it was an Indiana recipe, though I had never heard of it, and I've been a Hoosier since birth. Guideposts didn't give a recipe, but found this one and it is very good and disappears fast!

• 1 3-ounce box cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix • 2 cups milk • 1 yellow cake mix • 1 (12 ounce) package butterscotch chips

Whisk the pudding mix into milk in a saucepan, and bring to a boil on stovetop burner, stirring all the time. Remove from heat. Pour in the box of cake mix and stir well. Pour into a greased 9x13-inch pan. Sprinkle on the butterscotch morsels. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool, cut and serve!
