1 BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER CHILD OF THE LIGHT If you have ever had a chance to read one of my newsletter articles, you may realize that I am a proud papa. This month, I am setting out to carry forward to honor all of you fathers out there. You may remember that in last month’s article, I mentioned the Big Ten, also known as the Ten Commandments. In the Big Ten, we are commanded to honor our father and mother, so here I go. My son, Anthony, really has a love for light. He is fascinated with lights. A few weeks ago, it seemed to be his favorite thing to talk about. As soon as he got up each morning, he would want the lights on. He would say, “Light, lights, lights.” Anytime we would walk by our ceiling fan that has a light fixture, I had to stop and lift him up, so he could pull the chain to turn them both on. Quite honestly, it began to become a little annoying until one day when I figured out that it was our thing. It was our time to bond and it was his time to show me how smart he was becoming. It was yet another connection that Anthony was making in this world. As I made a connection with his connection, the thing that had become annoying became a great joy to me. It is one of those moments that makes you puff out your chest and say, “That’s my boy!” Then it dawned on me that there must be another father out there who does the same thing when we make connections. That Father is Our Heavenly Father. I can only imagine how proud God is when we make our connections with him. I like to call Anthony a child of the light. I only hope that as he continues to be fascinated by light that he will someday be fascinated with the true light that is found in Jesus Christ. So, to all God’s children, I take a quote from Anthony, “Light, lights, lights.” Seek to spend time in the light of Christ and strive to make a connection with God this month as you celebrate with the fathers in your life. BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER

CHILD OF THE LIGHT

If you have ever had a chance to read one of my newsletter articles, you may realize that I am a proud papa.

Seeking His Light, Pastor Joe

WISHES OVERHEARD + I wish we could have a favorite hymns Sunday. We could turn in our favorite hymn requests beforehand and maybe Mr. Schultz could give some hymn history! + We wish to thank Russel & Arlene Lohrman for sending newsletter postage! + We wish to thank Dave & Sandra Harrison for sending a donation to be used towards the newsletter! + The Ladies Missionary Society wishes to thank Mr. Verne Harner for his donation to be used for greeting cards!

THANK YOUS Attn: Jr. & Sr. High Sunday School Class Dear Students: Thank you for showing so much interest and sym pathy towards the children of South Africa. It is truly impressive to see kids so young organize a fundraising project on behalf of the Angel Network. What a great idea to hold a "Souper" Bowl of Caring; I appreciate all of your hard work. I know how sad the AIDS situation is, but there is hope. One hundred percent of your $99 donation will go to help women, children, families, and education both domestically and abroad. Keep up the great charity work that you have all been involved in. Also, please know that it is very important to dream big and work hard toward reaching your goals. You can achieve all of your dreams through knowledge, but also realize that you can only gain knowledge through education. Work hard in school and make the best grades you can. Remember that success starts with you and it can start right now. You can do whatever your heart desires. Don't ever let anyone or anything hold you back from doing your best. Stay in school! Sincerely, -Oprah Winfrey

SCOUT SUNDAY SCOUT AWARDS: Scout Sunday was celebrated on April 25th. Scouts recognized were Spencer Davidson, Paige Davidson, Teia

Louthen and Parker Mitchell. Teia & Parker earned special "God & Me" awards, badges and pins, presented by Pastor Joe. Teia's mom Tammy, Parker's dad Steve and Pastor Joe also earned awards for mentoring Teia & Parker in the process of their earning this award. Congrats to all! The God & Me award is designed to help children become best friends with Jesus and tell their story of "God & Me" together. In each lesson, Parker & Teia made games and kept them in a GAMEBOX (God and

Me Exploring BOX). These games reinforce the Bible lessons and provide opportunities for families to explore God's love together. (Thanks to Tammy Louthen for photo. )

PASTOR JOE’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED On Sunday, April 25th, in honor of his birthday (April 27), Pastor Joe was presented with a $100 Visa card by our Staff/Parish Chair, Ron Austin Jr. Pastor Joe will be able to spend it anywhere he wants (as long as they take Visa!). METRO INFANT BAPTISM Attired in a lacy white dress, Alexis Nicole Metro, daughter of Joe & Jennifer Metro of Charlotte, North Carolina, traveled all the way to Indiana to be baptized at Buck Creek United Methodist Church on May 2, 2004 by Pastor Joe Hornick. Alexis was born on New Year's Eve 2002. She has two brothers Jacob & Levi. Her fraternal Grandparents are John & Willadean Metro of Buck Creek who attended the baptism. Also attending were mom Jennifer's parents Mr. & Mrs. Rob Heinze, Mr. & Mrs. Larry Rouch, Jennifer's brother Lucas, John's brother Dan Metro and his wife Ruth, also sister Sue Pope & her husband Jerry. Mike & Summer Taylor, Haleigh and Makayla Taylor, Jona Metro-Lucies & family (Hunter & Rylee). Grandma Willy said of the occasion: It was such a blessing to have all of our children & all these grandchildren here together!

IN THE PINK: MOTHER'S DAY BREAKFAST ENJOYED The Mother's Day Breakfast was a great success, with 51 attending! Mothers and their children enjoyed french toast with syrup and butter, sausage links, mixed fruit cup, orange juice, milk and coffee. Tables were decorated with alternating yellow and pink tablecloths and napkins. On each table were clear bud vases displaying carnations. It looked just lovely as we walked in! Many thanks from the mothers to those men of the church who helped with the breakfast [Jim Davidson Sr., Jim Davidson Jr., Fred Merkel, Ron Austin Jr., Bob Shepard, Sam Stratton] and especially to Pastor Joe who planned the pink and yellow theme!

CHOIR NOTES The BCUMC Choir gave an invited performance at the Church of the Nazarene on May 1st. The occasion was a Women's Breakfast honoring Karen Scott, their pastor's wife. (Pastor Scott is retiring.) We performed some of our favorites including Come on Children Let's Sing and Jesus Loves Me. We were told that Mrs. Scott enjoys traditional hymns, so we sang Victory in Jesus, He Lives, and did a special version of Blessed Assurance (which included a solo by Elaine Latia). One of the highlights of the morning was singing May the Good Lord Bless & Keep You which was accompanied by Brittany Bunte on her flute. We also sang "It is Well with My Soul" at the request of Mrs. Scott. The Choir ventured to Regency Place on May 5th and sang in the hallways for the residents. Faye Merkel was the featured soloist on the hymn "It is Well with My Soul". One resident, Frankie, who is there for a short time to recover from heart problems, told the Choir "This [music] really helped me. You just don't know how I needed this tonight." Even if we touch just one person each time with our music, that's all we need. Our monthly on-the-road musical ministry will continue year round, including the summer months. Let us know if there is someone somewhere you know who needs touched by music. [Thanks to Fred Merkel for taking the photo!]

MOMENT FOR MINIstry—THE NOMADS NOMADS On a Mission Active in Divine Service ... or ‘Northern Old Methodists Avoiding Deep Snow’ began in 1988 with 5 projects. The very first project had 2 NOMADS. In 2004, there are around 200 projects with approximately 1400 NOMADS! NOMADS are a United Methodist sponsored program and part of the UM Volunteers in Mission (VIM) program, a branch of the GBGM. The mission work is for people with self-contained RVs who want to share their talents and abilities. Projects ‘go with the seasons’ with winter projects across the southern United States. As the weather improves, projects ‘move’ north. The money raised through dues, a GBGM grant, the support of churches and individuals goes to pay for administrative costs and to the NOMADS materials fund. The Materials Fund is used to purchase supplies for agencies/churches that cannot afford supplies. BCUMC is committed to giving $100 per year for 5 years to the NOMADS. Requesting agencies furnish RV hookups (electric, water and sewer or dump station) and the cost of all materials (we do donate some supplies, but it’s not expected). NOMADS take care of their remaining expenses. (Lots of meals are furnished by congregations and agencies out of love & appreciation for the work we do.) Normally, projects last for three weeks. We work Monday -Thursday, 8 to 4, and are off from Friday through Sunday. There are ‘drop in’ projects with on-going needs for Nomads traveling through the area. The Feasters’ first NOMADS experience was a ‘drop in’ project in Illinois. Many denominations are represented by Nomads—United Methodists, Presbyterians, Christian Church, Catholics, Congregational, community churches, Lutherans and more – all serving the Lord by sharing talents/abilities. NOMADS receive a list of projects in April for summer/fall projects and in September, for winter/spring projects. The list contains basic info...main tasks to be done and skills needed and # of RV sites available. There is something for everyone to do, from more physical to less strenuous jobs. NOMADS sign up for projects, listing 1st, 2nd & 3rd choices and hope we get one of them. This winter, we worked at Bronson, FL, near Gainesville (leading our first project) and in Selma, AL. There were 9 team members, staying at the Williston UMC in Williston, approx 12 miles from Bronson UMC. Our main tasks were to paint the sanctuary, an education building, do some rewiring and install new electrical outlets, convert a bathroom to a baby-changing area with a new vanity and sink,

10

refinished the altar rail and a small table and other general repairs. The people were so appreciative, both in Williston and Bronson and

gave us many good memories. The last day, our team volunteered to prepare/cook/serve/and clean up a meal for a district-sponsored meeting...our way of thanking all of them for the ‘royal’ treatment during our stay! After visiting family and friends and wandering, we arrived in Selma, AL, at the United Methodist Children’s Home and stayed at the new RV parking area, affectionately named NOMADS Plaza. There were 12 members on this team, with NOMADS from New York, Ohio, South Dakota, Iowa and 2 couples from Wisconsin. One of the

amazing things about these teams is that we normally don’t know any of the other team members before we arrive, but by the end of a project, we feel like old friends. People at the agencies are so surprised to learn that we all didn’t know each other before arriving! The UMCH’s campus buildings had a major problem with moisture so our main jobs were to install new ventilation fans in the bathrooms of 4 residential buildings and to scrape/sand/prime/paint damaged areas of walls and ceilings and sometimes paint entire rooms. Along with those tasks, there was plumbing, electrical, carpentry and general maintenance completed. The ‘best’ part of the project was the interaction between the NOMADS and the staff and children. Each couple was assigned to one of the cottages for using the washers/dryers to do our laundry. We also did much of the work within our assigned cottage so we had daily interaction with the moms/babies and staff . Each working day begins with team members taking turns leading devotions, followed by a team meeting to discuss

Page 6: BUCK CREEK BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER JUNE 2004 UMC … · Teia & Parker in the process of their earning this award. Congrats to all! The God & Me award is designed to help children

11

what needs to be done and who will be doing what, then going to work. Following devotions and our team meeting on the first morning in Selma, the staff cooked breakfast! It was our first opportunity to get to know them since administrators, cottage supervisors, childcare workers and the maintenance supervisor also attended...very nice and the food was delicious! There were more opportunities to interact with the children and staff during our project: + (1) We were treated to dinner in our ‘assigned’ cottage on a Tuesday evening. In ‘our’ cottage (a Babies First for single young mothers and their babies), the mothers worked with the childcare workers to plan the menus, cook and serve and we got to visit with the moms and their babies after dinner. + (2) We attended chapel services each Sunday and Tuesday, presenting the service on our last Tuesday. (We shared a little of BCUMC by teaching the NOMADS and the kids/staff to sing “Buh-buh-buh-bubbling”!) + (3) On our last evening, we were all treated to a BBQ picnic supper that included all of the kids and staff...lots of fun! The interaction is as important as the work we accomplish, if not the most important, because the kids/staff get to see us share our faith and love for the Lord as we volunt eer. One of my favorite times was taking pictures on a Sunday afternoon for our NOMADS project report. I had taken pictures of the chapel and was walking back to our RV. Many of the kids were out playing and I asked if I could take their pictures. They flocked over (more kept arriving) and it was a special time. (Digital cameras are so nice for that purpose.) They posed, acted goofy and asked for pictures by themselves so they could send them to their parents, etc. It was a special blessing for me to have fun with them! We took the pictures to the BBQ picnic and the kids were so happy to get them. In addition, there is an annual NOMADS’ National Reunion in late June, with educational classes and classes for leaders, along with a lot

12

of good fellowship. In 2003, it was held in Bowling Green, KY. The 2004 Reunion is scheduled in York, PA. Indiana NOMADS have a reunion in mid-September. Some are ‘working’ reunions and others, relaxing, but always a good time! Last year was a ‘relaxing’ 3-day reunion, and we voted to organize a project just for Indiana NOMADS. So... from May 10th through the 21st, Indiana NOMADS were at Pine Creek Camp, installing a new electric fence, re-roofing, painting and doing general maintenance to help get the camp ready for the summer/fall seasons. It’s hard to leave when a project is finished, but it’s part of living. NOMADS try to not say ‘goodbye’ but rather “See you on down the road.” It makes parting a little easier. We pray that some seeds of love have been planted and the Lord will help them grow...what an opportunity and blessing the NOMADS have been for us!

THANKS TO BCUMC FOR SUPPORTING THIS MISSION PROJECT!!!

STARTING A LETTER WRITING MINISTRY... My friend, Tracy Niccum, is currently incarcerated at the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill, IN. He is there as a direct result of his drug addiction and the choices he made because of it. Tracy has accepted full responsibility for his situation, and has also chosen to give his life to Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17-Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old is gone, the new has come. I have personally known Tracy since we were kids riding the school bus together and I know his heart. The changes in him are remarkable and they are genuine. It was his faith in God that led me to become really excited about the Lord and my own spiritual growth. Tracy has been denied visitation with his small children, ages 3 and 5, and this has been his biggest struggle. He also has two teenage children who he does have visits with. I am asking for prayers for him, because that is the MOST we can do for him---pray. But I am also asking for your help in starting a letter writing ministry to lift him up and give him hope, and to show him what Christian love is all about. Tracy was an avid outdoorsman prior to his incarceration. He enjoyed nature's beauty, loved to hunt, fish, camp, and ride 4-wheelers. He loves to laugh and there are lots of jokes available on-line. He also appreciates inspirational messages and Bible verses. Mail can make a difference for a person in prison---it's their only link with the outside world, and they really look forward to it. If you feel led to take a few minutes out of your day to send a card, letter or a couple of jokes to Tracy, it would mean a lot to him! [Matthew 25:40-The King will reply, ``I will tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."] Thank you in advance!

A few mail guidelines: 10 pages max per envelope, no staples, paper clips or metal bindings. He cannot receive any packages or books unless they come to him from the publisher or bookseller (such as Barnes & Noble). He will not receive mail that comes with no return address, so Pastor Joe said it would be ok to use the church address. Tracy has limited funds for stamps and envelopes, so he will write one letter to the church each month and send it to me to pass along.

Here is Tracy’s address:

CONFIRMATION SUNDAY The confirmands Allen Church, Alexandria Davidson, Keirsten

Davidson, Travis Germain, Megan Mitchell, Amanda Shepard, were confirmed as new members of the church on Sunday, May 16th, 2004. As their parents and the congregation looked on, each confirmand reaffirmed their baptism as they kneeled, and Pastor Joe crossed their foreheads with water. Pastor Joe reminded all six that they are now committed to doing more in the church using their presence, prayers, and abilities. Confirmation class activities included a sleepover at Pastor Joe &

Joelle's home, and a trip to Temple Israel. As you can see from the following individual profiles, the key words to the class were "fun" and "learning"! Each graduate has a relative in the BCUMC Choir. As the Choir's special gift to the graduates, they sang "May the Good Lord Bless & Keep You" as special music, accompanied by Brittany Bunte on the flute. Gifts of a book Dear Graduate by Charles R. Swindoll and a brass bookmark were presented to the graduates by Pastor Joe. Remember God has promised to always be with you! Two cakes made by Faye Merkel (one Harrison HS and one Purdue) were served with punch after church in honor of the graduates.

Once again, congrats, grads!!!!!

WINGS OF LOVE MINISTRY It has been a busy season in the field of missions, there are many people who do not know Jesus Christ. As I minister in the streets I share the testimony of Clarence and what he experienced in the spiritual realm. I covet your prayers church family in this area, as the time of harvest is near and the sheep need to hear HIS voice more than ever. 9-1-1 seemed to be a wake up call. The Passion of Christ was a reminder. People's hearts were stirred because of this movie and in the streets they are aware of Christ. The ones in prisons that are held captive because of a crime are being set free in Christ, although they are in bondage because of a crime, they are being set free in HIM. Clownin Around Lolli has surfaced and is back to clownin around. People in the streets remember Mr. Bo Jangles and so they laugh at the memories of the duo team. It's exciting to see some of the street people in Bo Jangles me and say. Hey see my new jacket? It warms my heart as I see it and know from whence it came.... Praise god! Mission Trip I leave for Jamaica in 7 days for a mission trip (please pray for safety). This Island is very poor and the people are in much need of prayer. Clarence and I visited the islands 4 years ago and met with the people there. I travel with my son, daughter in law and grandson Bailey as well as another couple from church. It is a mission trip to share financial guidance. We will be ministering in whatever space the Lord shows us.

May blessings be upon each one of you this day. Shalom, Linda LaMaster Psalm 91

HONOR YOUR FATHER... Father's Day on the calendar in 2004 is June 20th. This is a day we honor our fathers and grandfathers and those who have been like fathers to us. But every day on the calendar is "Father's Day"---the Almighty Father's day! Use each and every day to: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you -Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. -Deuteronomy 5:16 You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths; I am the LORD your God. -Leviticus 19:3

RECIPE CORNER GRANNY'S FRESH STRAWBERRY PIE “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” -Galatians 5:22-23

This is one of my mother-in-law's favorite recipes. This is the MOST scrumptious dessert on a hot spring day. (Good thing it makes 2 pies!) Time to pick 'berries...

• 2 8-inch baked pie shells • Fresh strawberries, cleaned and halved • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 3 level Tablespoons cornstarch • 1 1/2 cups water • Red food coloring • 3 oz. box strawberry jello

Put sugar, cornstarch, and water in pan. Cook slow until clear and thick (about 5 minutes). Take off stove. Add 5 drops red food coloring and 3-oz. box of jello. Stir in. Let cool. Pour over strawberries which have been placed in baked pie shells. Let set in refrigerator about an hour. Serve with a dollop of your favorite whipped topping.
