What is an ODP?

• Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) are a vital part of the operating theatre team.

• They provide a high standard of care to patients of all ages.

• ODPs provide individualised and skilled care for patients at all stages of their operation – from when they arrive in the operating theatre department, to discharge from the recovery room.

• If you enjoy caring for patients, but also want to be hands-on then this could be the perfect career for you.

• Working across anaesthetics, surgery and recovery you’ll gain a diverse skill set and acquire the essential experience and competence to progress within your career if you want to – the possibilities are endless!

Entry Requirements

For September 2020 entry: 104 - 120 UCAS tariff points including a minimum of two

A-levels or equivalent.

Numeracy and Literacy requirement: GCSE English Language or English Literature and Mathematics grade 4/C. We also accept iGCSEs, Key Skills and Functional Skills and other qualifications at Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework.

We recognise that mature applicants may have a wealth of experience rather than formal qualifications, so we’ll consider your application on these merits if included in your application. You’ll need to apply to BU in the usual way through UCAS and you may be invited to an interview to discuss your suitability for the course based on the experience you tell us about in your application.

Programme Overview

• 3 years full-time

• Around 1900 hours in practice

• Theory and clinical skills sessions at BU

• Actively practicing lecturers

• State-of-the-art simulation facilities

• IPL projects – study alongside other healthcare students

• Variety of assessments – essays, exams, presentations, OSCEs, practice assessments

• Placements in all 3 perioperative areas and beyond…!

Placements

• 1900 hours in placement over 3 years

• Working across all 3 perioperative areas and developing areas of practice

• Supervised fully by mentors

• Supported by Practice Educators and BU Academic Advisors

• Working as part of the perioperative team, directly

• involved in patient care throughout their surgical journey

• Approximately 60% of study time spent on placement
