Programme Specification BSc (Hons) Contemporary Nursing This programme specification (PS) is designed for prospective students, enrolled students, academic staff and potential employers. It provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the intended learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if he/she takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information on the teaching, learning and assessment methods, learning outcomes and content for each module can be found in Definitive Module Documents (DMDs) and Module Guides.

A. Programme Rationale This dynamic and innovative programme encompasses two pathways: Contemporary Nursing and Contemporary Healthcare which offer modules that take account of the demands of modern healthcare. The programme harnesses the themes of service improvement, needs led care, clinical knowledge, skills and leadership development within the programme and will enable students to develop into knowledgeable and adaptive practitioners with a strong capacity for critical thinking.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has now confirmed that with effect from 2013 the minimum academic qualification for nurses should be at degree level (Department of Health 20091). Therefore, the BSc (Hons) Contemporary Nursing Programme is intended for existing Registered Nurses who will undertake a range of modules that meets their current continuing professional development needs. It is suitable for nurses from all fields of nursing and offers an opportunity for nurses without a degree to ‘top up’ their existing academic qualifications to degree level and at the same time make a substantial contribution to their continuing personal and professional development. In addition, the programme will equip them with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their professional roles and optimise their career aspirations regardless of their area of practice. Studying this programme will encompass the need to anticipate and prepare for new roles and responsibilities (Department of Health, 2008, 2006) so the pathway will encourage students to reflect on leadership and service innovation. A range of teaching and learning approaches are used to reflect the practice-focused and work-based orientation of the programme. These include interactive lectures, seminars, experiential workshops and tutorials. Programme delivery aims to be flexible in recognition that students will be working in professional practice at the same time as undertaking the programme. Guided study, online teaching and learning resources and use of electronic media will complement classroom-based learning. Personal tutors will also act as academic supervisors for the final 30 credit honours project module. The programme is assessed by way

of a range of course work activities. All the assessments have a practice-focus and are designed to be directly relevant to the student’s work setting. Written examinations are not included in the assessment portfolio of the programme. Although placements are not a component of the programme, students will be expected to be working in a health or social care setting in order to undertake the programme. The international pathways of the BSc (Hons) Contemporary Nursing/Healthcare programmes are approved by the Malaysian Nursing Council and aim to reflect the same programmes available within the UK. However in order to acknowledge the international dimension, and the learning needs of students abroad, some modules have been adapted in order to ensure that a UK or indeed European model of nursing is not imposed upon the student. The BSc (Hons) Contemporary Healthcare pathway is designed to meet the educational needs of a wide range of health care professionals as it considers the diversity of human experience of health and illness from a wide variety of interdisciplinary and inter-professional perspectives. The pathway critically examines health and illness discourse and seeks to analyse evidence about health and illness in a wide range of contexts and perspectives. This pathway is available both in the UK and in Malaysia.

B. Educational Aims of the Programme The programme has been devised in accordance with the University's graduate attributes of programmes of study as set out in UPR TL03. Additionally this programme aims to:

1. develop professionally and academically within their roles; 2. critically appraise key factors underpinning care delivery; 3. acquire a critical understanding of, and demonstrate a commitment to, professional values.

C. Intended Learning Outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills and other attributes in the following areas. The programme outcomes are referenced to the QAA benchmark statements for and the Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies (2014) and relate to the typical student. Additionally, the SEEC Credit Level Descriptors for Further and Higher Education 2010 have been used as a guiding framework for curriculum design.

Other information relevant to the programme There are modules in the UK programme that require the student to successfully complete identified practice based competencies. If there are no facilities, or suitably qualified personnel in the student’s area of practice it will be the student’s responsibility to negotiate access to another organisation and arrange the necessary DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance and Honorary contract requirements for working in another organisation. The University will not take responsibility for ensuring that the necessary insurance arrangements are in place or that the employer of the Practice Assessor has agreed to the arrangements made. Arrangements involving non NHS organisations may have more complex requirements. Such arrangements must be confirmed to the Programme Tutor in writing before enrolment on the module. This information is available in the Module Guide and Practice Assessors document. The programme was subject to successful review from the NMC for the two NMC approved modules (Preparation for Mentorship 2012 & Return to Nursing 2014). Students will be required to complete an on line induction and registration process prior to admission to the programme.

University policies relevant to the Programme The University undertakes to use all reasonable endeavors to deliver, assess and administer this programme in accordance with this Programme Specification. At the same time it is recognised that it is in the nature of academic developments that changes, for example to the structure, curriculum, and assessment of a programme may be necessary in order to ensure that the programme remains up to date, in response to issues raised as a result of on-going monitoring and evaluation, and/or in order to conform to new regulatory requirements imposed by this institution, by professional or statutory bodies, or by national or governmental bodies. The programme operates within the guidelines and policies relating to equal opportunities and environmental issues which may be agreed from time to time by the Board of Governors and/or the Academic Board of the University. Where the programme is offered in collaboration with another institution these policies and guidelines will normally be those of the partner institution.

The programme operates in accordance with the University's Regulations Governing Studies Involving the Use of Human Subjects (UPR RE01) agreed from time to time by the Academic Board of the University. However, where the programme is offered in collaboration with another institution (for example through a franchise arrangement for all or part of the programme) then specific approval must be obtained from the University for the operation of the programme within ethical guidelines prepared by the partner institution. The partner institution will be responsible for all insurance liability in connection with the observance of ethical guidelines.
