Introduction

As they approach the end of fifth year of secondary education school students make very important choices which affect their future: the options for further study which are available to those who wish to return to school will have been discussed with Guidance teachers in Personal and Social Education, with the Careers Officer and with parent/carers.

This booklet is designed to provide you with relevant information on all of the courses on offer in Sixth Year at Broxburn Academy. Please read it carefully. All students should also speak to their subject teachers about what level it is most appropriate to study; clearly the results of the preliminary examinations are an important indicator of current progress.

The Course Choice Sheet that will be issued to all students will be gone over in detail in PSE. Students are strongly advised to follow subject teachers’ recommendations: their advice is based on clear understanding of what is involved in further study at the different levels.

Scottish Qualification Authority statistics demonstrate that a good Higher pass should lead to success at Advanced Higher. Some students may, however, prefer to broaden their portfolio of Higher passes in Sixth Year. A Credit pass in Standard Grade or a good pass at Intermediate 2 should lead to success for students progressing to Higher. Where study at Higher is not appropriate in S6 the courses at Intermediate Level allow progression and certification.

You will be presented for SQA examinations at the end of the session if you are ready. Your progress at prelim, teacher recommendation and your class work will be taken into account.

In West Lothian all students returning to S6 will be asked to sign a contract with their school making a commitment to study a minimum of four subjects and one short course in sixth year. The time remaining after Core subjects are accounted for will be devoted to study in school.

Many students will be able to follow, from August, exactly the course they have chosen for the start of the new timetable in June; in some cases changes to courses or levels will be necessary in August following examination results.

Broxburn Academy will continue to offer a wide provision of courses for S6 and the staff are committed to supporting all our students to achieve their highest potential.

WHO CAN HELP YOU TO MAKE YOUR CHOICES?

Broxburn Academy S5 Course Choice Booklet 2013(For S6 Courses in Session 2013-14)

Page 3

Page 5: Broxburn Academy Course Choice Booklet S5 - S6

Your parents or carersMake sure that you discuss your course choices with your parents or guardians. If they are not sure about any of the details they can ask the school for further details.

Your subject teacherThey are the best people to give you an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses and have made your recommendations.

Your guidance teacherThey and your parents or carers can make an appointment with your guidance teacher to discuss any aspects of school life.

Your Careers AdvisersThere is a separate page that tells you about the Careers Service.

YourselfThink carefully about your course choice and make it for the right reasons. Try to choose subjects which you will enjoy and allow you to gain knowledge and skills which will help you in your future life.

We strongly encourage all pupils to make positive choices. Choices for the wrong reasons:

you like or dislike a teacher - you don't know which teacher you will get you have a friend in class - this friend may not be in your class you have no knowledge or experience of a course - all courses are described in this

booklet you think it is a boys'/a girls' subject - not true, equal opportunities exist for all pupils

regardless of their gender you think it might be too difficult - a positive attitude towards all subjects will bring

success! A negative attitude is likely to result in a lower grade.

Choices for the right reasons:

interest in the subject - if you are interested in the subject you are much more likely to achieve a higher grade than if you pick a subject because it is the least worst option

relevance to future career - having a long term goal helps you to work hard towards achieving success

highest level of 'prognostication' - recommendations based on level of progress and application shown during S5 - adding to the successes already achieved in S5 or using the skills already developed

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICES?

THE SUBJECT CHOICE FORM (A specimen copy can be found at the back of the booklet)

Main Subjects will lead to National Qualification certification and will be studied over five periods each week.Short Course Subjects are interest subjects. They will be studied over three periods each week.

Students will study FOUR or FIVE Main Subjects and ONE Short Course in S6.If Study is chosen in the Short Course, pupils will have one period with a subject specialist

Broxburn Academy S5 Course Choice Booklet 2013(For S6 Courses in Session 2013-14)

Page 5

Page 7: Broxburn Academy Course Choice Booklet S5 - S6

for each of three of their main subjects.

To complete the form:

CHOOSE: FOUR or FIVE subjects from the MAIN Subject listONE Short Course/Study will be selected once your ‘main’ timetable has been constructed and confirmed

NB: In addition, all students will study Core RE, PE and PSE.

Please write the name of the subject and the level you wish to study it at in the space provided. Reserve choices are required.

Please note that the choice form does not guarantee that any particular subject or class will run. Viable numbers must be obtained before a class can be formed and, if this is not the case in any or all of the subjects chosen by you, you may be asked to make a further choice. Various subjects will be offered within the Authority Virtual Campus – all Secondary Schools in West Lothian work together to ensure that, wherever possible, pupils obtain their first choice of subjects. This means that some subjects will be studied in other schools and pupils will be transported to these schools during class times.

Remember: The level should be the one above the one you expect to achieve

from your results in August.

Your choices should show progression from previous awards.

A ‘crash’ subject (one which has not been studied before) is generally thought to be more challenging than a subject you have studied before.

For the above reason, a maximum of only ONE ‘crash’ subject is strongly recommended.

Your course choice will be reviewed in August and there may be some adjustments made at that time in light of your results.

Take note of the Recommendation in your Parental Report.

Talk to your teachers and parents about the courses you intend to choose.

Take note of the Entry Requirements for the course you hope to study.

Think about your Career intentions before you choose.

Accounting: Higher (One Year Course)

Why Accounting? This crash course will help you develop financial life skills and so is suitable for all pupils regardless of your chosen career path.

The course allows pupils who have studied Higher Graphics to study two major areas of the subject in much greater depth – 3D-modelling CAD work and a DTP project. There is a small technical graphics course, but this is not the main focus on the course. 3D modelling is used in many current vocations, particularly architecture, product design and media. We use industry based programs, making the course very relevant to sixth years looking to procure hands-on skills for work. Pupils will undertake a modelling project where they study a particular product, strip it down to its main components and model it in Autodesk Inventor. Pupils then create the surrounding environment (e.g. bathroom, kitchen, bedroom) to place the 3D model in. Realistic materials and lighting are then used to render it effectively. The DTP project sees pupils analysing existing publications such as magazines in a topic of their own interest and they are then asked to create their own publication in the same vein as the one analysed. Pupils will aim for a professional and visually stimulating finish, convincing enough to be seen as a professional publication. This is an excellent way to learn the principles of effective design and communication and to build up a portfolio of work for university / college entrance.

Graphic Communication is a means of presenting information and promoting products in a visually stimulating yet informative manner. The course is split up into two distinct areas – a Thematic Presentation and Technical Graphics. The Thematic Presentation is the detailed study of a product, chosen by the pupil, where it is broken down to its components and detailed freehand orthographic sketches and illustration techniques are used to produce visually stimulating folio pages. The product is then recreated in a 3D modelling environment and rendered to a realistic quality. Technical Graphics will see the pupil’s complete complex geometric problems and pictorial work as well as industry level assembly and sectioning drawings. The course is an ideal lead in for pupils considering careers in architecture, construction, engineering, fashion, product / graphic / interior design and media-based careers.

Intermediate 2 is a distilled version of Higher Graphics course, making it ideal preparation for pupils who did not take the subject after Standard Grade or those who wish to study the subject for the first time. The Course is split into two distinct knowledge areas - Technical Graphics and Computer Graphics. As an introduction, the start of the course is where pupils will begin to develop freehand sketching skills by sketching everyday objects and adding colour and effective presentation techniques to achieve a visually stimulating piece of work. The next stage will be Computer Graphics where pupils again take an existing product and produce several different drawings generated from 3D models created in Autodesk Inventor. Technical Graphics sees the pupils complete complex geometric problems and pictorial work as well as industry level assembly and sectioning drawings. The course is an ideal lead in for pupils considering careers in architecture, construction, engineering, fashion, product / graphic / interior design and media-based careers.

Film will be the focus: one major Hollywood blockbuster (fiction) and a documentary (non-fiction).

Production is when students make a short film and put into practice the understanding developed when analysing films. The short film is 5-10 minutes in length and students will be expected to operate as a professional film company and take a simple idea through all the stages from conception to projection. This will include finding locations, filming the scenes and editing.

Successful completion of the course could lead to: A degree in Media Studies, Film Studies

or Public Relations A media orientated qualification:

journalism, production, advertising Employment in the media industry: TV,

film, newspapers, radio, advertising or public relations.

The study of a modern language is vital to success in disciplines such as business, marketing, financial sectors, law, media, the arts, sport, and travel and tourism. Statistics prove that having a level of competence in a language can enhance employment prospects both at home and abroad and particularly given that we live in a multilingual global context. It is worth noting that over 90% of people who work in a world business context do not speak English as their first language.

This course is aimed at introducing students to the design process and allows then to create ideas. Different design problems are expected to be researched, created and modelled. All work will be presented in a design portfolio and can be used for UCAS applications.

You will research how various products are designed, what materials have been used and the processes involved. Product Design encourages technical drawing work, sketching, rendering and CAD design. Previous experience of drawing work is a great advantage.

Pupils will be charged £5 to cover modelling costs.
