2 The World of Carbons (40 hours) The unit seeks to develop knowledge and understanding, problem solving and practical abilities in the context of fuels; nomenclature, structural formulae; reactions and the uses of carbon compounds; plastics and synthetic fibres; and natural products.

3 Chemical Reactions (40 hours) The unit seeks to develop knowledge and understanding, problem solving and practical abilities in the context of the chemical industry; Hess’s Law; equilibrium; acids and bases; redox reactions; and nuclear chemistry.

Creative Cake Production Intermediate 2 Students choosing to follow this course should be interest in the production of cakes and the decoration of cakes. The catering and the Hospitality sector continues to be a vibrant part of the service sector economy in Scotland. Employers are demanding a well-educated and skilled work-force capable for further development. The course offers candidates the opportunities for an integrated, hands on skill development, with clear paths to employment or progression into further and/or higher education. The course provides clear progression for candidates who wish to broaden their practical skills in this subject are. The course also offers clear pathways for candidates Course Content The course consists of three mandatory units each 40 hours in length: Cake Production Intermediate 2 Cake Decorating Intermediate 2 Creative Cake Production Organisation of Practical Skills Intermediate 2 The course is focused mainly on practical work and takes place in a practical environment. Wherever a new skill is to be introduced, this should be demonstrated to candidates and any accompanying underpinning knowledge explained to aid understanding. The content of the course is prescribed, but is intended to be candidate centered rather than content driven. Help and encouragement should be offered to candidates who plan a project beyond that required for minimum competence, and which will require extended learning, teaching and support. This approach should be used where it meets the need of a particular candidate or group of candidates, but it should not inhibit the development of the practical skills, which is the key purpose of this course. At all times candidates must aim to produce a professional end product. Creative Cake Production (continued) Intermediate 2 External This is based on a practical assignment. It is anticipated that the practical assignment will require between 20 and 30 hours (this includes teaching and learning time) and will be carried out near the end of the course. To gain the award for the course the candidate must have completed all of the prescribed units, and must be able to generate reliable evidence, capable of being authenticated and assessed externally. The Practical Assignment is not solely concerned with practical activity, but has been designed to test and evidence the candidate’s ability to plan, develop and evaluate a product that suits a given brief. The project integrates the knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the individual course units. Candidates will be provided with a brief and are expected to demonstrate attainment in:

• Interpreting and understanding the brief. • Information gathering, adding clarity to the brief. • Decision Making. • Selecting and managing materials. • Producing the product. • Evaluation of both the process and the product.

Assessment Procedures To gain the award of the course, the candidate must achieve all of the component units as well as the course project. Creative Digital Media Intermediate 1 Aims of the Course The aims of the Creative Digital Media Course are to:

• Provide candidates with a broad introduction to the digital media industry.

Dance Higher Required Entry Level Pupils need at least one year of dance experience in any style or to have completed the Intermediate level 2 dance units. The pupils will need to attend the audition on Friday 25 March at 1.30pm in Howden Park Centre to be selected for the course.

Course detail The course is based on 3 strands; technical ability, written work and choreography. The students will study ballet, contemporary and jazz, create their own group choreography, write two essays and complete two performance solos in jazz and contemporary. Assessment The assessments are completed both internally and with an external examiner one at a time before the Christmas holiday and after the Easter holidays. Progression If pupils have completed the Performing Arts Higher Dance Practice they can then progress onto HNC / HND or Degree level courses. Engineering Craft Skills Intermediate 1⁄2 Students choosing to follow this course should be interested in working with and making artefacts from metal. There is no Design element to this course but being able to read working drawings (orthographic projection) and follow the instructions carefully will be to your advantage and determine the course level you are presented at. These skills together with the organisation required to be successful in the course can be used in a number of trades within the Engineering Industry. Students will experience the rigorous standards which would apply were they serving an apprenticeship or in employment in this field. Course Content The three units for each level are:

Bench Skills (Metal) 40 hours Machine Processes (Metal) 40 hours Fabrication and Thermal Joining Techniques 40 hours This course is of a practical nature, takes place in a workshop environment and provides many skills which are appropriate to a wide range of applications. The course will develop skills in marking-out, cutting, shaping, machining and finishing materials, as well as adjusting and maintaining a range of hand tools. Apart from giving an insight into industrial practice, this course helps with the development of self-confidence, manual dexterity and control, perseverance, maturity and spatial awareness. Assessment Procedures To gain the award of the course, the candidate must achieve all of the component units as well as the course project. The course project will be internally assessed and externally verified by the SQA. Examples of previous students’ work can be viewed in the CDT Department, but the best way to find out about Engineering Craft Skills is to come along to the Department and ask us about this course. Course Detail 1 Language Study (60 Hours)

The Language Study unit focuses on the various genres of writing and Close Reading. Students will read and learn about a variety of texts whose purposes are informative, expressive and creative/persuasive.

2 Literary Study (60 Hours)

The Literary Study unit focuses on the reading of literature and on responding critically to that reading. Students will read and learn about a variety of literary texts of recognized quality.

3 Writing Folio The writing folio will focus on various genres of writing. This folio will be externally assessed by the SQA and will contribute 20% to the final award.

• Higher English Students should be genuinely interested in writing and in the study of literature and be capable of the self-discipline involved in individual study. Course Structure There are three component units in this course: two mandatory 40-hour units (Specialist Study and literary study) and one optional 40-hour unit (to be selected from Language Study, Textual Analysis, Reading the Media or Creative Writing). The Specialist Study comprises of a 3,500 - 4,500 dissertation. Suitable subjects for this dissertation are chosen in consultation with the teacher, drawing on the students’ special areas of interest. All assessment is external. Progression Advanced Higher English is a fantastic foundation for preparing for University Study. History Intermediate 2 This course is aimed at students who have gained a General pass at Standard Grade and who are committee enough to wish to continue their study of History. 1 Which Periods of History do we study?

In this course we shall be studying the period of Later Modern History.

2 Which topics are covered? Unit 1 From the Crade to the Grave? Social Welfare in Britain, 1890s – 1951.

Unit 2 The Road to War 1933 – 1939.

Unit 3 In the Shadow of the Bomb: The Cold War 1945 – 1985.

3 Assessment This is set out as follows: (a) Internal Assessment of all three Units. (b) An Extended Response, which you write up over 1 hour in normal school time and which is worth

20 marks. (c) The Exam. This will last for 1 hour 45 minutes, where you will answer a longer question worth 8

marks ten shorter questions worth in total 50 marks. 4 More about the Extended Response

In this you must:

• Decide on a question which relates to the units you are studying. • Carry out the necessary research to help you answer this question. • Prepare a plan of not more than 150 words. • Take this plan into the classroom where you use it to write your extended response.

History Higher Required Entry Level:

• Standard Grade History at 1 or 2 (or 3 with negotiation) or • Intermediate 2 History (with negotiation)

Course Details Three units will be covered in the complete course. Each will last 40 hours: 1 Historical Study: British History: Later Modern British History – 1851s – 1951. 2 European and World Study: “Appeasement and the Road to War, to 1939”. 3 Scottish History: The Impact of the Great War 1914 – 1928. Homework: As will all Highers, students should note that the study requirement for this course is four to five hours per week. Assessment Internal Unit Assessment is by means of essays and source-based answers written under strict

examination conditions in class time. Home exercises will prepare the pupils for this assessment but only assessments tackled in school time will count towards formal assessment.

External (a) The Course will be examined through a final, externally prepared examination. Paper 1 requires the writing of two essays and lasts 1 hour 20 minutes. Paper 2 tests evaluation and use of sources related to Unit 3 and lasts 1 hour 25 minutes.

(b) All students must also prepare and then write up an “Extended Essay” worth 30 marks. A 200-word plan is used to do this and the finalized result is externally marked.

Hospitality (Practical Cookery) Intermediate 1 Required Entry Level

• A keen interest in food and food preparation. Course Details This is a practical course which is made up of the following units:

• Food Hygiene for the Hospitality Industry • Introduction to Cookery Processes • Introduction to Food Preparation Techniques • Organisation of Practical Skills

Students will take part in practical cookery every week and must provide a suitable container. There is a cost of approximately £1.00 for materials per practical session. Assessment Internal Students will be assessed by class work, teacher checklist and short answer questions.

IT Literacy Intermediate 1 Aims of the Course The aims of the IT Literacy course are to:

Leadership Award Higher/Intermediate 2

This award is designed to enhance your knowledge of leadership styles, skills and qualities by finding out about different leaders. You will be able to compare different styles of leadership and consider their effectiveness. The knowledge you will gain will help you to reflect on your own skills, qualities and experience in relation to leadership. The award is also designed to allow you to develop your potential for leadership by giving you the opportunity to take a leading role in an activity. To gain the award you must successfully complete:

Leadership: An Introduction (Higher or Intermediate 2) Leadership in Practice (Higher or Intermediate 2)

In the Unit Leadership: An Introduction you will be able to think about your potential for taking on a leadership role. You will gather information about leadership principles, styles, skills and qualities used both in the past and at present. Examples may be drawn from well known historical events, current political or other high profile individuals in the media or from your local community. These different examples may help inform your views about what makes an effective leader. You will think about your own qualities, skills and experience in relation to leadership. This reflection on your own leadership potential may help you to think about styles of leadership you may wish to adopt in leadership roles.

In the Unit Leadership in Practice you will be able to further develop your potential for leadership. You will be given the opportunity to lead the planning for an activity. This activity may be a stand alone activity or it may be part of a bigger project. You will lead others to carry out the plan. On completion of the activity you will have time to reflect on its success and consider carefully the contribution you made to this. You will also reflect on what you have learned about yourself as leader.

Throughout each of the above Units you will be expected to work largely without guidance from your tutor but you may use your tutor as a sounding board for ideas you may have.

To complete the Award successfully you must show that you have thought about and completed a number of steps that will enable you to develop both your knowledge of and abilities in leadership. As a result of completing this Award you will be better prepared for undertaking a leadership role, whether this is in the workplace, education or within the voluntary sector.

Assessment Internal Three unit tests each lasting approximately 45 minutes. Credit given for each pass.

Modern Studies Intermediate 2

Purpose The purpose of this course is to develop further, within a balanced structure, knowledge and understanding of political, social and international issues and the skills of evaluating. Recommended Entry Students would normally be expected to have attained:

• The Intermediate 1 course or component units in Modern Studies. • An Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 or component units in another Social Subject. • A grade 3 or 4 at Standard Grade in another Social Subject.

Course Details The course comprises three mandatory 40 hour units, plus 40 hours of flexible time. There are options within the units to allow Centres to provide a two-year programme in which students may progress through Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2 levels without repetition of content. Progression From the achievement of the Intermediate 2 course or units students in some Centres may be able to progress to a course in Modern Studies at Higher. Alternatively, students could progress to an Intermediate 2 course or units in another Social Subject or possibly to VQ or NC course, or to employment. Assessment The external assessment will consist of a single question paper, lasting 2 hours. It will be divided into three sections: Political Issues in the UK; Social Issues in the UK; International Issues. Candidates will be required to answer Knowledge and Understanding questions and source Evaluating questions. The course award will be based on the total score obtained for the question paper. 3 International Issues Homework: As will all Highers, students should note that the study requirement for this course is four to five hours per week. Assessment Internal Unit Assessment is by means of essays and source-based answers written under strict

examination conditions in class time. Home exercises will prepare the pupils for this assessment but only assessments tackled in school time will count towards formal assessment.

External (a) The Course will be examined through a final, externally prepared examination. Paper 1 requires the writing of two essays and lasts 1 hour 20 minutes. Paper 2 tests evaluation and use of sources related to Unit 3 and lasts 1 hour 25 minutes.

(b) All students must also prepare and then write up an “Extended Essay” worth 30 marks. A 200-word plan is used to do this and the finalized result is externally marked.

Religious, Moral & Philosophical Studies

What is the recommended entry? Students would normally be expected to have completed one of the following:

• Standard Grade Religious Studies at Grade 1 or 2 (for Higher). • Standard Grade Religious Studies at Grade 3 (for Intermediate 2) • An equivalent pass in a Social Subject at Standard Grade or Intermediate 2.

Overall, this is a demanding and rewarding course for those students who are interested in exploring religious, moral and philosophical questions about the nature of humanity and the world in which we live. What is the course content? World Religion: Buddhism, Morality in the Modern World: Gender, Christianity: Belief and Science. Buddhism began in India and is now practiced all over the world, mainly in Tibet and in South-East Asia. It is also popular in areas of India, some of the islands in the Indian Ocean and in China. Buddhism is also attracting people in the West, including some film stars and people in the public eye. Buddhism, like all religions of the world, considers question about human nature and the meaning and purpose of life. For example, what are people all about? What are we aiming for in life? How do we get what we can out of our short time here on Earth? Gender, the relationship between religion and moral values and the philosophical perspective on the moral issue of gender will be examined. The stereotying of male and female roles will be considered and if they are morally justifiable. In addition, an exploration into the economic equality between the sexes and if this could lead to a more just society. Belief and Science looks at the relationship between Christian revelation and scientific enquiry. Critiques and challenges from both viewpoints will be considered. Ultimate questions relating to the origin of life of the universe will be explored, as well as the compatibility between Christian belief and scientific theory. How is the course assessed? The course is made up of unit assessments and a final exam. The aim of both these methods of assessment is to allow students to demonstrate competence in the areas of knowledge and understanding and the skills of analysis and evaluation.

Woodworking Skills Intermediate 1/2 Required Entry Level

• Standard Grade Craft & Design at 3 or 4 or • Previous craft experience or • At the discretion of the CDT Department

Course Details There are three units: Bench Skills 1 Wood Flat-Frame Construction – 40 hours Bench Skills 2 Wood Carcass Construction – 40 hours Machining and Finishing Wood – 40 hours This course is of a practical nature, is workshop based and provides many skills appropriate to a wide range of applications. The course will develop skills in marking out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials, as well as adjusting and maintaining a range of hand tools. Apart from giving an insight into industrial practice, this course helps with the development of self-confidence, manual dexterity and control, perseverance, maturity and spatial awareness. Assessment Procedures To gain the award of the course, the candidate must achieve all of the component units as well as the course project. The course project will be internally assessed and externally verified by the SQA. Where can it lead?

S5 Contract 2012 – 13 PART I What students can expect the school to do: 1 The school must provide a choice of courses which allow students to progress academically. 2 There must be a good selection of courses which improve and extend the qualifications which a

student has gained in S4. 3 The school must offer adequate advice to students in selecting suitable courses and continuing

support throughout the session. 4 The school must make strenuous efforts to find alternative provision for any subject which a

student requires, but which cannot be taught at Inveralmond. The school will arrange free transport to other schools as required for this.

PART II What the school expects of students who stay on: 1 The student must select a full timetable (28 periods per week). Any course changes must be

agreed by the Head of House who will consult with Senior Exec if appropriate. 2 The student must be punctual and must be in tutor period by 8.35am (except on days where a

first period is timetabled at another school or at College). 3 The student must attend school regularly and must go to all lessons on the timetable. The

percentage of absences will be monitored. (Individual departments will outline attainment levels at the start of each course. The general level of attendance should not fall below 90%

4 The student will be expected to behave in a responsible manner and to conform to school rules. This includes wearing school uniform at all times. 5 Each student's timetable will be seen as a contract to be signed by the Student, the Parent

and the Head of House. There will be regular reviews of performance in points 1-4 above. PART III What happens if you don't keep to your contract?

SIXTH YEAR CONTRACT 2012 - 13

1 Entry to S6 2

Students will be accepted into 6th year only if a meaningful, coherent timetable of courses is negotiated which allows for academic progression. Students will normally be expected to take courses in at least 4 of the 5 main columns - in addition to the S6 Tutorial. The 5th Column is not a “free” Column but will be used for timetabling extra study or service to school. 2 Sixth Year Students can expect the school to

1 Consult individual S6 and their parents on issues affecting students with their academic progress and behaviour. 2 Give you access to a S6 Study Room and/or the Community Cafe. 3 Recognise your right to expect to be treated like an adult - always provided that you act in an adult way. 3 The school expects Sixth Year students to

1 Register at 8.35am with their tutors. Persistent lateness will be considered a breach of the contract conditions and you will be asked to leave. 2 Participate in a programme based on personal support and development education. There will be a mixture of tutorials, personal review and target-setting, talks by visiting speakers and so on. The S6 Tutorial is an integral component of Sixth year at Inveralmond Community High School and everyone will be asked to register at each tutorial. Attendance is compulsory. 3 Accept responsibility within Inveralmond by participating in at least one activity designed to help the school, its students or the community. 4 Attendance and progress will be monitored through information passing to tutors who will, if necessary, involve Head of House. Regular attendance will be a condition of continuing in S6 90% being the minimum acceptable level of attendance. Students are expected to attend school from 8.35am – 3.30pm. Anyone leaving during this time will be marked as “Truant”. 5 Follow normal school rules. These rules include the wearing of school uniform at all times. 4 The purpose of the Contract By signing the contract the student is declaring commitment to her/his own learning, to the school as a whole and to a more adult role within the school.
