DESCRIPTION

Create a promotional piece for the Labour party to use leading up to the general election. This will be a spoof newspaper set in the future to show what state the country may be in under a Tory government. Since the election of David Cameron as Tory leader, party policy has increasingly focused on ‘social’ and ‘quality of life’ issues such as the environment, government services and schools. Cameron has frequently called Britain a “broken society”. Margaret Thatcher, on the other hand, once said that “society does not exist”. The newspaper will show Britain in a similar negative condition as it was under Thatcher in an attempt to get more Labour votes.

BRITAIN was on the verge of cri-sis last night as the public’s pa-tience with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his cabinet seems to have run out.

Westminster chiefs were un-der pressure yesterday when new figures released showed that for the sixth consecutive year, violent crime in Britain had risen, to a record high.

Labour leader David Miliband was quick to criticise, blaming huge budget cuts in the Police force as the main reason for the rise.

All this comes at the same time as the ongoing criticism about the power stations being built in Scotland, the ongoing war in North Korea as well as the calls for an early election.

Yesterday we had our very own poll on our web site and the results were staggering. A massive 74% those who took part want to see parliament dis-solved with 60% wanting to see Labour back in charge for the first time since 2010.

HALF of all children living in Britain do so in relative poverty, Government advisers claimed yesterday. Soaring numbers are depressed and in fear of crime, says a report from the four chil-dren’s commissioners in the UK.

Compared with youngsters in main-land Europe, they drink a lot more alco-hol, start having sex earlier and are more likely to use cannabis, it adds.

The findings, to be presented to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva this week, will be a setback for Boris Johnson who claimed our children are the wealthiest in Europe last week.

In the report, the commissioners say: ‘It is unacceptable that a country as wealthy as the UK has 5.8 million chil-dren living in relative poverty.

‘Nearly 2.3 million children are living in severe poverty in the UK and there is a relatively high likelihood of severe poverty among children living in Lon-don, Wales and Northern Ireland.’ The mental health of children in England has ‘deteriorated’ over the past 30 years, say the authors.

They place some of the blame on the ‘target-driven’ education system which leads to ‘increased anxiety and stress’.

GOVERNMENT cuts in the NHS and in particular, the maternity units, has re-sulted in record numbers of new mums being turned away from hospitals.

Research has found mothers are giv-ing birth in hospital corridors, waiting rooms, cupboards and even hospital toilets.

Westminster defended themselves yesterday, claiming there is more than enough money made available to mater-nity units across the country, and even went on to say hospitals need to spend money more wisely.

He received a card from Queen Eliza-beth II when he was 100 and received twenty-three others from his 105th birthday until she stepped down from the throne. He has received thirteen cards from King William V and received his fourteenth yesterday.

More than 70 of Mr. Wilson’s friends and family joined the celebration, in-cluding his daughter Phyllis and her husband Gordon, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

‘It was fun,’ he said. ‘My grandchildren and great-grandchildren came.’

Mr. Wilson was born more than a century ago, on October 12, 1885 and served in both World Wars.

‘I was called up three times - twice for the First World War and once for the Second World War,’ said Mr. Wilson.

In his lifetime, Mr. Wilson has seen two millennium celebrations, Albert Einstein published the theory of rela-tivity, the Wright brothers flew the first plane and Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon.

Mr. Wilson ran the family farm at Great Beer, near Bude, until 1953 and was co-founder and leader of Stratton Young Farmers Club.

He moved to the village of Poughill just outside Bude in 1948 and later served as vice chairman of Bude Town Council.

Before that, he remembers the abdica-tion of King Edward in 1936, when he passed the crown to George VI so he could marry his lover, the American di-vorcee Wallis Simpson.

He remembers getting his first tel-ephone in 1938 and his first motor car in the early 1940s.

‘It was a Trojan car - and I also had a Titan tractor,’ he said. ‘Driving the car for the first time was enormous fun.

‘There were no driving tests. I picked it up then I had to drive it home. I ran my brother-in-law to Plymouth and I hadn’t driven five miles ever.

‘We somehow made it there and back in one piece.’

Mr. Lucas married his wife Ivy, a farmer’s daughter whom he met at Bude Fair, in 1926. They were married until Ivy passed away in 1963.

He attributes his long life to fresh West country air and good country food, saying he’s had ‘lots of outdoor living and I’ve never travelled far.’

Plus the 140-year-old has never smoked and only has the odd glass of sherry.

He played bowls for Cornwall in the 1970s and was a keen football player.

When asked if he had any vices, Mr. Wilson replied: ‘Oh, I’m not going to tell you everything.’

Jackson checks in to rehab

5D IMAX by 2028

POPSTAR Paris Jackson has revealed she has entered a residential treatment centre in the US.

“I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health,” she said in a statement.

“I appreciate your well wish-es and ask that you please re-spect my privacy at this time,” she added.

The 27-year-old, daughter of Michael Jackson, admitted in December that she had been attending Alcoholics Anony-mous meetings.

Jackson’s spokeswoman would not say where the cen-tre was located or what the singer was being treated for. Paris’ frequent partying and drunken exits from nightclubs were a fixture of tabloid news-papers last year.

In July, her brother Prince Michael sent a letter to the artist, begging her to concen-trate on her music and leave the drugs and alcohol alone.

“You have acted like a spoiled child, alienated many of your friends and family and endangered the integrity of the Jackson name,” he was quoted as saying in the letter.

The popstar admitted that she became worried by her portrayal in the press.

“I was like, ‘I don’t want to be written about at these clubs with these people’,” she told People magazine last year. “I work, I sing, I dance, I have a living. That’s what I do every day. I work every single day.”

Jackson’s most recent al-bum, ‘I’m Dangerous!’’ was her most successful to date, being downloaded over 5 mil-lion times.

MOVIE buffs were going crazy last night, after IMAX revealed plans for a 5D cinema experi-ence.

The world’s leading movie chain confirmed they had been experimenting with dif-ferent 5 dimensional tech-niques and they would be rolled out in every cinema in Europe by 2028.

The announcement came after months of speculation about what they had in mind.

The announcement comes just months after IMAX scrapped production of their virtual reality movie gadget, V-Bot. Seen as a bit of a fail-ure, they will hope 5D is the future.

FURY AS WORK BEGINS ON SCOTTISH POWER STATION NO.7FURY AS WORK BEGINS ON SCOTTISH POWER STATION NO.7

Beaten & hounded by Police dogs just for caring about their country

YESTERDAY seen just the latest of a long line of battles between Police and pressure groups sur-round the erection of power plants in the country.

Three years ago there were over eighty arrests after two police of-ficers were left in a critical condi-tion when protests at the site of the plant in Brechin turned nasty.

However, he most violent scenes we have seen are still from, the now infamous, riots of 2013 at the site of the nuclear plant in Moffat. Twelve people, ten police officers and 2 protesters, lost their lives that day.

An enquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission found that a combination of a large crowd of protesters and a low Police presence was to blame for the violence that day.

Since then there have been four other power plants opened in the country. None of which have done

so without some sort of reaction.Yesterday, Nicola Walsh,

spokesperson for Nationalise Scotland pressure group said: “The number of power stations been build in Scotland by the current government is now sit-ting at seven since 2013. Those down in London don’t care about what happens in Scotland. The fact they are putting our health at risk with all these stations, which keep English houses warm shows this. It’s just no right.”

This echoes the feeling of a growing number in the country who feel they have been lied to by the previous two Tory govern-ments to be in office.

“These plans were in place back in 2010 when they got in of-fice, but they were no where to be seen in their manifesto.”

“We were cheated and lied to back then, and continue to be lied to today. It’s time for change.”

FURY AS WORK BEGINS ON SCOTTISH POWER STATION NO.7FURY AS WORK BEGINS ON SCOTTISH POWER STATION NO.7By BIFF TANNEN

SCOTTISH demonstrators pro-testing at a power station were bitten by police dogs and suf-fered other injuries, police said today.

More than 1,000 demonstrators con-verged on the giant nuclear site in Mel-rose yesterday, with clashes breaking out between police and protesters as they tried to tear up perimeter fencing.

Chief inspector Marlene McFly of Lothian and Borders police said: ‘There have been reports of some protesters re-ceiving dog bites and other injuries as a result of a concerted effort to pull down fences and enter the site.

‘Of course this is regrettable, but it’s a combination of reckless behaviour by some of the protesters and us having to respond with a different style of polic-ing.’

By mid-morning today, 52 people had been arrested, she said, clarifying the fig-ure given yesterday of nearly 80 arrests.

One protester, Ilsa Hayden, 23, wore a bandage on her arm to cover a bite she had received from one of the dogs.

She said: ‘We were near the fence and some people were trying to get over. I was just in front of them.

‘Horses and dogs started charging down. Police shouted that they were coming.

‘They let the dogs on to me and one leaped up and bit my arm.’

The student from Dundee added that after she had received the painful bite, officers continued to push her and her friends.

She said: ‘I wasn’t trying to break the fence, I was just near people who were and I was supporting them.’

Another protester, Jurgen Prochnow, 28, said a friend of his had been bitten in the stomach by a dog and had to be taken to casualty.

The student from Edinburgh, said: ‘A lot of people had puncture wounds from the dogs. People were bleeding.

‘I saw at least 10 or 20 people who had been bitten.’

A police spokesman said: ‘We cer-tainly haven’t set dogs on anyone. Dogs have remained on their leads at all times. If people have received dog bites, that’s regrettable, but dogs are a legitimate way of helping to maintain order.’

Officers said they had to tackle ‘con-certed disorder’ at the site of the Melrose Power Station. Activists from three pres-sure groups - the Camp for Clean Scot-land, No More Stations and Nationalise Scotland - staged the protest as part of a campaign against the number of power plants being build in Scotland.

Police have been trying to block pro-testers who have carried out threats to tear down fencing in an attempt to close down the site.

At 3pm yesterday a spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police said: ‘Police officers stationed at the perimeter of Melrose Power Station are facing groups of protesters, around 50-strong in places, trying to gain entry to the site.

‘Officers are using appropriate force to stop the protesters, but are not trying to contain them. All protesters are free to move away from the perimeter.

‘A breach of the fence line has now been secured and a number of further arrests have been made.’

Reinforcements were called to support the police response.

The spokeswoman said: ‘We’ve got a significant police presence which is in-creasing as the situation develops.

‘We are facing concerted disorder and we will continue to try and facilitate peaceful protest.’

E.ON said: ‘Melrose power station will play a key role in ensuring we keep the lights on for millions of homes across the region and has undergone major in-vestments that make Melrose one of the cleanest power stations of its kind.

‘We’re already closing three of our other power stations (south of the bor-der) and are pushing forward with lower carbon options that include de-veloping new wind farms, that will allow us to tackle the threat of climate change while also ensuring security and affordability of energy sup-plies.’

Melrose, when complete will be the

seventh plant to be erected in Scotland since the Tories got into power in 2010.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking at a London Primary School, defended the plans yesterday saying: “This is the seventh power station to be build north or the border but we have also build stations in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.”

“To keep all the homes throughout the country warm, we need to have these stations. There are certain areas of Scot-land which are densely populated thus more land for us to build on. There is nothing more to it than that.”

He continued: “If anything the Scot-tish people should embrace the fact that these stations are being build north of the border. While unemployment rises throughout the UK, these sites provide great opportunities for families living in and around the Melrose area and in Scotland as a whole.”

VIRGIN were last night given the all clear to launch their MoonSpace pro-gram by European government officials.

Sam Branson, son of Sir Richard, an-nounced that the group would be taking applications for moon visits from as ear-ly as next week and that manufacturing of their Mooncarriers would start before the end of the year.

It is rumoured that each flight may cost upwards of £25,000 per person once an application is granted.

Criteria for each passenger was not discussed but it is thought every appli-cant would be psychologically tested and must have a clean criminal record.

MARS ATTACKS!(Maybe not!)

VIOLENT crime rose 14% in the UK during the first quarter of 2025, recorded crime figures have shown.

There were 389,500 violent crimes in Scotland, England and Wales from Jan-uary to March compared with 353,000 in the same period the previous year.

Offences of violence against the per-sons jumped 17% period-on-period to just under 350,000 incidents.

This included an 18% rise in more se-rious violence such as homicide and se-rious wounding, from 10,000 to 11,800 incidents.

Sexual offences also rose 8% to 14,000 crimes compared with 12,900 in the same period the previous year.

But results from interviewees in the British Crime Survey suggested violent crime fell 3% overall in the 12 months to March.

Separate data on firearms crime in 2024-2025 showed a huge rise in the use of replica weapons.

Imitation firearms were used in 5,815 recorded crimes - a jump of 46%

year-on-year.The overall number of firearm offences

increased by 2% to 20,248 incidents, compared with a 34% rise in 2023-2024; this headline data was first published last year when it emerged gun crime had doubled since 2010.

Most of this is blamed on the budget cuts in the Police force. Budgets have been reduced year-on-year since the To-ries took charge in 2010.

In the last election in 2022 Labour and the Lib Dems both made their feelings on this very clear. They both promised to increase public spending throughout

our national defence, both at home and abroad.

But in an encouraging trend, the number of firearm robberies decreased by 13% year-on-year, and the use of handguns to commit a crime fell 6%, or 5,549 offences.

Firearms homicides fell to 981, compared to 1097 the year before - a reduction of 11%.

The Justice Secretary was unavaila-ble for comment but the matter will be addressed in the House of Commons during next weeks debates.

CHINESE Space Station chiefs came in for more criticism last night over their ‘new’ images from Mars.

Since taking over from NASA as the main space explorers, the Chinese have said to have spent over €15 Billion trying to find out more about the red planet.

The images they have produced look pretty much the same as those NASA captured throughout the 1990’s which is leading to a bit of unrest in the Chinese government.

Tories give serial killer free reign

SERIAL killer Adam Watson was re-leased from prison as part of the Tories new ‘light release’ campaign last night.

Watson, who was jailed for killing five female students back in 2011, was once named among Britain’s most dangerous men before he was caught.

Justice Secretary Howard Down de-fended the decision last night. “Adam is the ideal candidate to test our new Light Release campaign.”

“We aim to cut the rates of re-offend-ing by releasing offenders for short peri-ods of time to help bleed them back into a normal society.”

The decision wasn’t well received among the family of murdered French student, Lucienne Delyle. Her father called the decision “crazy” and said the government should put them selves in “our shoes.”

It is not the first time the government has received bad press about letting pris-oners walk early. In 2014, Yorkshire Rip-per Peter Sutcliffe was released, only to end up back behind bars eight months later on after being convicted of sexual assault

THE BRIDGE between the rich and poor in Britain is at it’s highest since the 1980’s.

Independent research found that the living conditions between the moderately poor and moderately rich where so vast that in some castes it reached records never seen before.

It was announced last week the number of people living in poverty was at a high as well.

HOMELESSNESS in the UK reached alarm-ing rates last month, a charity has said.

HCAS has said they have helped out more than 85,000 people throughout the country last month, almost double 39,648 number from 2020. The rise in unemployment, debt and as a result, house repossesions are thought to be the main cause.

LAWSUITS against fast food giant McDonald’s were yes-terday passed in the Ameri-can Supreme Court.

The lawsuits, seven in total, are filed by families of individuals who suffered sudden cardiac death linked to a now banned preservative called monosodium gluamate (MSG).

MSG was investigated in 2016 and was found to cause sensitive neurons to die. resulting in headaches, nausia or even death. Since then the addi-tive has been banned in the majority of major countries around the world.

McDonald’s, as well as tens of other food brands, admitted to using the additive in many of their popular food dishes for years, without fully knowing the dangers of it.

Since the 2016 investigation Mc-Donald’s stopped using MSG in all their food.

Judge Cameron Bell said at the hearing: “Taking all the evidence into account, along with the independent reports on the dangers of MSG, I am in no position to ignore this case.”

Cases dating back as early as the turn of the millennium are among those passed yesterday.

This case echos the large number of lawsuits which were filed against var-ious tobacco companies in the 1990’s were millions of pounds where paid out in compensation to long term sufferers of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.

The fear is now that this may see a surge of similar lawsuits being filed from all over the world, including the UK.

No one from the restaurant chain was available for comment.

Court proceedings are set to begin on January 11th next year.

THE SHOW NO ONE CARED ABOUT ATTRACTS 200A CROWD of 200 people turned out for the birthday celebrations for Margaret Thatcher in London last night.

The huge fireworks display over the Thames, to celebrate the former Prime Minister’s 100th birthday, is thought to have cost the British public more than £1,000,000 – even though clearly no one wanted it.

Tory ministers in Westminster backed the idea just last week saying that the centenary celebrations for any Prime Minister should be celebrated, especially the first female PM.

The plans have never been well re-ceived by the public, seeing it as a waste of money. Jeff Nash, 65 from Essex said: “I, like most remember the Thatcher years. Very well.

“The troubles the country went through with that woman at the helm should not be repeated. And she certainly shouldn’t be rewarded or recognised for it. That’s what I see this as being.”

Mr. Nash’s views are a mutual feeling throughout the country.

Not Liz Marley, who attended the cel-ebrations last night said the turnout was a “Lack of respect to one of the greatest leaders, and strongest woman the coun-try has had”

Born on the 13th of October 1925 to a grocer, Margaret Thatcher worked her way to Oxford where she gained a de-gree in chemistry, going on to work for Lyons Ice Cream.

Changing to study law, she was called to the Bar in 1953 before being elected MP for Finchley in 1959.

In 1970, she became Secretary of State for Education. In 1975, she became leader of the Conservative Party and with the party’s election success in 1979, Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first woman Prime Minister.

Her hard-line attitudes quickly gained her the nickname “The Iron Lady” and in 1982, she showed her resolve by tak-ing Britain into the Falklands War.

Election wins in 1983 and 1987 made her one of the few prime ministers to win three successive terms. In 1990, fol-lowing a leadership challenge, she left Downing Street. She was made a life peer in 1992.

No one in government was available for questioning last night over the fail-ure and such waste of public money.

By LUKE GRAHAM

SHE was the biggest thing in UK music in the early nough-ties, then she became a feature of the tabloids over her drug abuse and now, believe it or not, Amy Winehouse has become a United Nations Goodwill Am-bassador.

The singer is following in the footsteps of stars such as Miley Cirus, Angelina Jolie and Wayne Rooney by working with the UN.

She will be lending her support to the global fight against the spread of tuberculosis - and appeared at UN HQ

in New York yesterday to make her ap-pointment public.

Wino said: “Music is a universal lan-guage. I believe that through people’s love of music we can increase knowledge and understanding and support people affected by TB.

“I hope that people who feel inspired by my music will also feel moved by what I have to say about TB.”

And Judith Mandelbaum-Schmid of the Stop TB Partnership has explained why they made what some will regard as a slightly odd choice.

She said: “She’s a young, successful pop star with millions of fans all over

the world.”Judith continued: “Amy Wine-

house has all the qualities needed to make a great goodwill ambassador. On a recent visit to South Africa to find out more about TB she revealed them all: Intelligence. Deep curios-ity. Empathy.

“The trip was arranged as a fact-finding mission in preparation for her appointment as Goodwill Am-bassador against Tuberculosis for the Stop TB Partnership.

“This was not a quick stopover to shake hands with high-level digni-taries as a photo op.”

Latest figures show that over the past two years there were at least:

• 63 births in ambulances and 608 in transit to hospitals;

• 117 births in A&E departments, four in minor injury units and two in medical assessment areas;

• 115 births on other hospital wards and 36 in other unspecified areas including corridors;

• 399 in parts of maternity units other than la-bour beds, including postnatal and antenatal wards and reception areas.

Additionally, overstretched maternity units shut their doors to any more women in labour on 553 occasions last year.

Babies were born in offices, lifts, toilets and a caravan, according to the Freedom of Information data for 2023 and 2024 from 117 out of 147 trusts which provide maternity services.

One woman gave birth in a lift while being transferred to a labour ward from A&E while an-other gave birth in a corridor, said East Cheshire NHS Trust.

Others said women had to give birth on the wards - rather than in their own maternity room - because the delivery suites were full.

Labour health spokesman Edward Morbius, who obtained the figures, said Tories had cut maternity beds by 2,340, or 22 per cent, since 2014. At the same time birth rates have been rising sharply - up 20 per cent in some areas.

Mr. Morbius said: ‘New mothers should not be being put through the trauma of having to give birth in such inappropriate places.

While some will be unavoidable emergencies, it is extremely distressing for them and their families to be denied a labour bed because their maternity unit is full.

‘It shows the full effects of the budget, where cuts to the NHS where announced. Boris Johnson wanted to save money without reducing National Insurance.

‘The Tories have let down mothers by cutting the number of maternity beds and by shutting down maternity units.’

The NHS employs the equivalent of around 25,000 full-time midwives in England, with more

jobs expected to go.However, the Royal College of Midwives esti-

mates at least 5,000 more are needed to provide the quality of service pledged in the Government’s blueprint for maternity services, Maternity Mat-ters.

At the same time almost half of all midwives are set to retire in the next decade.

Jerry Farman, a director at the Royal College of Midwives, said: ‘The rise in the number of births in other than a designated labour bed is a concern. We would want to see the detail behind these figures to look at why this is happening.

‘There is no doubt that maternity services are stretched, and that midwives are working harder and harder to provide good quality care. However, the rumours that the Government plans to reduce funding even more is ridiculous.

‘The key now is to make sure this does not hap-pen and any money is spent by the people control-ling the purse strings at a local level.’

Care services minister JJ Adams said: ‘The number of maternity beds in the NHS reflects the number of women wanting to give birth in hospital. Giving birth can be unpredictable and it is difficult to plan for the exact time and place of every birth.

‘Local health services have plans to ensure high quality, personal care with greater choice over place of birth and care provided by a named midwife.

‘We recognise that some parts of the country face particular challenges due to the rising birth rate. But we feel the money dedicated to the mater-nity services throughout the country is more than enough.

‘We now have more maternity staff per head than most other European countries so see no reason to increase it.’

Pregnant Anne Dix, 33, was turned away from one hospital and gave birth in a car as she dashed to another.

Her husband Bob, 39, delivered their daughter Iona in the back seat while her father raced to the hospital at 70mph.

‘I was really scared but I had to hold it together as I was the only one who knew the way to the hospi-tal,’ she said. [email protected]

BED SHORTAGE FORCES 4,000 MOTHERS TO GIVE BIRTH IN LIFTS, OFFICES AND HOSPITAL TOILETS

THOUSANDS of women are having to give birth outside maternity wards because of a lack of midwives and hospital beds.

The lives of mothers and babies are being put at risk as births in locations ranging from lifts to toilets - even a caravan - went up 15 per cent last year to almost 4,000.

Health chiefs admit a lack of maternity beds is partly to blame for the crisis, with hundreds of women in labour being turned away from hospitals because they are full.

THE number of British sol-diers killed in North Korea has now equalled the number killed in Iraq - and there is still no end to the conflict in sight.

Three more soldiers were killed yesterday, bringing the total to 369.

Fierce fighting in a major opera-tion against the South Hwanghae base has caused a spike in the death toll in recent weeks, and led to grow-ing condemnation of Government strategy.

Defence experts and opposition politicians have accused Ministers of putting servicemen and women’s lives at risk by refusing to pay for ex-tra troops and equipment needed on the ground.

One former soldier said the land-mark figure would be meaningless to serving troops, and warned that there would be many more fatalities before the mission was over.

Captain Doug Beattie, who retired recently after 27 years in the Army, said: ‘Whether it’s the 369th or the 2000th, the soldier will not think twice about that number.

‘Very soon we are going to hit the 400 mark. The likelihood is before we leave North Korea we are going to hit the 600 mark - maybe even the 1,000 mark. But they are all false landmarks.

‘For the politicians and for the Ministry of Defence, public percep-tion of the loss is crucial. For the sol-diers on the ground, it won’t matter.’

Boris Johnson earlier today de-fended the rising number of deaths in North Korea.

The Prime Minister sent his con-dolences to the families and friends of the servicemen who died today.

Speaking from the G14 Summit at L’Aquila in Italy, he said: ‘This is a very hard summer. It is vital that the international community sees through its commitments.

‘Our resolution to complete the work that we have started in North Korea is undiminished.

‘We knew from the start that de-feating the insurgency in South Hwanghae would be a hard and dan-gerous job but it is vital.’

He added: ‘There is a chain of ter-ror that runs from the mountains and towns of North Korea to the streets of Britain.

‘Having talked to (US) President (Hilary) Clinton and the rest of the world leaders, there is a recognition that this is a task the world has got to accept together and this is a task we have got to fulfil.’

Mr. Johnson noted that Britain had stepped up its military presence in North Korea to 19,000 troops.

England stunned as Scotland take them for EIGHT!

Kingston beats16 year record

Beckham getsfirst Spain cap

In his first showdown this year against defending world champion Ahmed Ty-son he left the field standing, coasting over the finish line to beat his previous best of 9.69 secs.

Kingston, who picks up £100,000 in prize money and bonuses, admitted: “I was ready, I was feeling good. I just went out there and executed it. I knew I had no worries. I told you I would come here and do my best.”

The race had been dubbed ‘The Burn-Up in Berlin’ - but the rest of the field just looked burnt out as Kingston set the stadium alight. The crowd stood up in disbelief as the time showed up on the clock.

The conditions, hot and dry and with a fast track, were ripe for a world record but there were even gasps of laughter at what Kingston had just done.

A measure of the achievement was

that Tyson took silver in an American record 9.69 secs but was still two metres behind.

Derice Bannock, the former record holder who won bronze in 9.85 secs, celebrated with his fellow Jamaican on the track.

And he said: “Even after the finish I couldn’t catch him.”

Kingston will compete in the 200m tomorrow as world-record holder over that distance.

And he added: “Game on now. I want-ed to show the world that The Olympics wasn’t a joke. It was important for me to come out and perform here. There will be no partying for me before I come back.”

Kingston, 22, even missed a month’s training after a car accident back home in April but last night it was the compe-tition that crashed and burned.

JAMAICAN Yul Kingston smashed Usain Bolt’s 16 year-old 100m world record by posting an astonishing 9.38 seconds in the Ger-man Grand Prix in Berlin last night.

The Jamaican, who won three gold medals in 2024, made no secret of his desire to emulate Jesse Owens and become a sporting legend.

Last night, in the same stadium where Owens won four Olympic golds in 1936, Kingston did just that - not just rewriting sprinting history but ripping it apart.

RECORD BREAKING... Kingston and his unbelievable time in Berlin last night

From his Hollywood home he was stated as saying: ‘He is English. He should be playing for England. Where he was born is irrelevant, myself and Victoria are English, so our children are too.

‘I took great pride in captaining Eng-land. Whether it be in World Cups or meaningless friendlies, it was an honour and a privilege to do so. It was always my dream for my children to do so too. Cruz will not play for Spain.’

With brother Brooklyn being a Hol-lywood actor and other brother Romeo not being involved with football, David obviously seen Cruz as the last hope of fulfilling that dream.

Being born in Spain, while David was playing with Real Madrid, to English parents, Cruz Beckham had the choice

of which country to represent. After last night’s appearance however, Beckham cannot now play for any other country including England.

England coach Gary Neville said: ‘Cruz is a talented player like his father. I would love to have the luxury of having him in my pool to choose from’

The credibility of the national game has taken much stick over recent years with different immigration laws mean-ing there are more and more players turning out for nations who they are not linked with in any way other than living in the country.

In this year’s World Cup the American team fielded a side with only 4 nationals in the starting eleven.

CRUZ BECKHAM came off the bench to make his debut for the Spanish national side last night – against his father’s wishes.

The Spanish-born son of former England captain Sir David, came on as a substi-tute and played 26 minutes in Spain’s 3-0 win against Turkey in Madrid last night. When the Inter Milan midfielder was named in Fernando Hierro’s squad for the friendly match last week, father Sir David was horrified.

SCOTLAND STUN THE WORLD CHAMPS

HAMPDEN found it’s roar last night as Scotland beat the Auld Enemy and cur-rent World Champions 8-1 in front of 52,000 fans.

The score line is Scotland’s big-gest win since their 11-0 victory over Ireland in 1901 – but I think this one will taste sweeter.

The Tartan Army opened the scoring in the 16th minute from the penalty spot after Ben Rich-ards was fouled by England stop-per Harold Weiss.

Richards dusted himself off to put away the penalty in what would be the first of 4 goals for the prolific striker.

Jubilant Richards said after the game: “We came into the game thinking we could cause an upset, but no one would ever have seen us put eight past the best team in the world. I wonder what the odds would have been on that.

“Its always a great feeling to leave any field with a win, a goal, the match ball but to do all three against England is unreal.

England were without skipper Dami-en Killiam and another six players who were in the World Cup run 3 years ago.

This will no doubt be a setback in their preparations for their defence of the tro-phy next summer in Mexico.

Manager Alan Shearer said after the game: “The players came here expecting a hard game. I think Scotland got a few breaks which resulted in goals and ulti-mately the win.

“We are not going to kid ourselves, this was not good enough for England but in our defence we did have what was a shadow team playing.

After the Richards opener, Scotland found themselves 3-0 up at half time

with goals for Gus Rethwisch and Ed-die Bunker.

Three goals in 18 minutes from Rich-ards after the break gave Scotland a six-goal lead before Anthony Penya pulled one back for the World Champions.

The goal of the night from Kenneth Lerner restored Scotland’s six-goal lead in the 81st minute. Lerner received the ball on the halfway line and beat two players before chipping the ball over the England goalkeeper from 20-yards out.

In the 84th minute England captain Harold Weiss was dismissed for a poor

challenge on Lerner. A Challenge which just showed the frustration that the en-tire England side was feeling.

Scotland capitalised on their man ad-vantage when substitute Roger Bumpass scored a bullet header from a corner in injury time to round off the scoring.

The Hampden crowd, the majority of whom stayed until the final whistle, were jubilant at the final whistle. The 52,000 strong crowd where singing the national

anthem as the players left the field of play in what some supporters were say-ing was a once in a lifetime perform-ance.

Edith Wiggins said outside the ground: “The last time we performed like that against England was in 1967. I wasn’t around for that and doubt I will be for the next time this happens. Magic.”

Scotland boss Billy Davies told the fans and the players not to get too car-ried away:

“This was a freak result. We could play

England another 100 times and the re-sult would never end up like this.

“I am not discrediting anything the boys have done tonight. We will take this result and progress to our next match very much on a high. I am wise enough not to get too carried away.”

The Tartan Army will no doubt respect their manager’s opinion, but I think a few may be wakening up this morning nursing the odd headache.

And so they should. Recent times have not been good for Scottish football fans. Let’s hope this is the start of something.
