Latvia is a land of health – its beneficial environment draws more and more visitors looking to restore and improve their health every year. The reasons are many: Latvia’s highly qualified and experienced specialists, state-of-the-art methods of diagnosis and treatment consistent with European standards, as well as top-level services for lower prices than elsewhere in Europe.

Latvia is located in the middle of the Baltic States, at a crossroads of the cultural and business routes linking Europe and the East. Here, ancient Latvian traditions merge with other national cultures to provide an unforgettable experience. Latvia’s picturesque, unspoilt nature, the Baltic Sea, and its many historical and cultural attractions will captivate, but the greatest surprise of all is the inspiration, as well as physical and mental rejuvenation you’ll gain by allowing yourself to enjoy Latvia without haste.

Latvia is easily accessible by any means of transport – air, land or sea. Its city streets, countryside and even the most popular holiday spots are free of oppressive crowds of people. Globally recognized methods of payment, well-developed transport, convenient communications, the education and language skills of Latvia’s population, first-class service and friendly prices will ensure you feel secure and at home here.

This booklet on medical tourism will provide you with an insight into the wide range of health services available in Latvia: from the services of professional medical practitioners (most in demand: diagnostics, dentistry, eye treatment, alcohol and substance abuse treatment, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, reproductive medicine, rehabilitation) to diverse rest, relaxation and beauty treatments in Riga, Jūrmala and the countryside, as well as the simplest way of all to relax and improve your health – a holiday outdoors, enjoying nature’s bounty.

Riga: One-Day Spa Programme If you only have a few hours to get away from it all, a day spa right in the centre of the capital is perfect. They offer an extensive and enjoyable range of services – high quality treatments, spa and skincare products, knowledgeable specialists, and a personal and individual approach, ensuring excellent value for money.

The highest quality spa services in town can be found at the branch of the exclusive, internationally known ESPA brand – Espa Rīga is located in the city centre, in a late 19th century Jugendstil (art nouveau) building with a sophisticated interior. The centre offers various thermal baths and saunas, multifunctional showers, a spacious fitness area, as well as beauty treatments by top professionals. as you would expect, a spa of this class also offers finest quality customer service.

In the very heart of old Riga (on the top floor of the Galerija Centrs shopping centre) you’ll find the largest day spa in the Baltic States, also popular among Rigans themselves – Kolonna Spa – developed in the traditions of a classic day spa. you can enjoy the full package of relaxation and beauty treatments and keep yourself fit with a visit to the sports club.

old Riga is also home to one of Latvia’s first day spas - Aqua Villa SPA, offering spa treatments, massages and other health and beauty rituals from all over the world, as well as high-level facial and body treatments, corrective and medical procedures. Leading spa and skincare products are used for all the treatments – Gerard’s (Italy), Binella (Switzerland), Charme d’Orient (France), etc.

However, if you’re searching for a quiet haven of relaxation, visit Taka SPA near the Riga Passenger Port. Renew your mind and body balance with the natural methods offered by Taka SPA – massages, masks, baths, herbal teas, breathing and other exercises, meditation. Taka SPA works with the British spa and skincare brand Elemis, which combines the best healing methods from cultures around the world.

Riga: A Therapeutic Dose of Contemporary Culture If a relaxing spa doesn’t seem quite enough and you have plenty of free time, spend it in the company of culture! Standing at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, Riga offers a cocktail of architecture, painting, music and other creative arts to satisfy any taste. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, entertainment or new horizons of knowledge, the city’s historical heritage and beating pulse of contemporary culture mean you’ll always discover something new in Riga.

Architectureold Riga is both the gem and the heart of the city, its oldest and most historically significant area. Houses from the 13th century can still be found here, as well as legacies of other centuries – a couple of hour’s walk here is practically a short course in European architecture. old Riga and one of the world’s largest quarters of Jugendstil buildings in the Elizabetes and alberta ielas area are responsible for Riga’s inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. other parts of the city are also home to various architectural styles: skilfully restored wooden buildings in Kalnciema iela, unique market halls and restored warehouses at the central Market.

MusicLatvia is a musical country – every weekend (even more often in summer) it hosts a variety of musical events satisfying the tastes of a wide range of music lovers. Every year, Rigans and city guests are treated to the Latvian national opera’s Riga Opera Festival, the Rīgas Ritmi (Riga Rhythms) Jazz Festival, the International Sacred Music Festival and more. International music stars are also frequent guests.

Artyou’ll find an art gallery, salon, exhibition hall or museum on almost every street in Riga, their collections infinitely varied in size and subject. If your visit to Riga happens to coincide with a special city-wide event (for example, the Staro Rīga Festival of Light, Museum night or Riga city Festival, you’ll find yourself at the very epicentre of cultural events and celebrations.

Riga’s mix of Eastern and Western culture, historical traditions and contemporary trends in health and beauty treatment makes it a treasure trove of different ways to nurture your body and mind. Choose some light relaxation in the capital of Latvia – maybe trying out the latest

trends in spa culture. The Spa Chart provides more information on what spa centres offer. Afterwards, indulge your mind in the cultural programme available in Riga – European Capital of Culture 2014.

Spas and Recuperation in Jūrmala and the CountrysideJūrmala has the greatest concentration of rehabilitation centres, health resorts and spa centres in Latvia – its proximity to Riga (about 20 km), long-standing traditions and broad range of services are key factors when choosing a place of recuperation. Jūrmala is one of the oldest spa towns in the Baltic States, known from the late 18th century, when mineral springs, peat and sapropel mud began being used more widely in therapy. Ķemeri was home to Jūrmala’s first bathing and treatment facility, while dubulti, Majori and dzintari developed into seaside resorts.

Jūrmala attracts visitors with its pleasant climate, old wooden architecture, historical charm and wealth of natural resources – ionized, sea- and phytoncide-enriched pine forest air, quartz sand beaches, mineral waters and therapeutic mud. High quality health, spa and rehabilitation services are available here: physiotherapy, water aerobics, massages, air therapy, salt rooms and exercises. Jūrmala’s rehabilitation centres specialise in treating hypertensive and cardiovascular disorders, digestive system and gastrointestinal disorders, musculoskeletal and metabolic disorders, skin, gynaecological and urological diseases, as well as disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system. Jūrmala is a member of the European Spas association and was granted Healthy city status in 2005 by the World Health organisation. Every year, the Blue Flag waves on Jūrmala’s beaches – a mark of quality, safety and excellent facilities. In 2010, the Jūrmala resort was awarded the title of European destination of Excellence (EdEn) in aquatic Tourism. To relax, rejuvenate, and prepare yourself for new challenges, visit the Amber Sea Hotel & SPA in dzintari, Amber SPA Boutique Hotel in Bulduri, Baltic Beach Hotel in Majori, Hotel Jūrmala SPA, TB Palace Hotel & SPA, Jantarnij Bereg, the Social Integration agency or the Jaunķemeri or Belorussija rehabilitation centres.

We also recommend venturing further – to a country manor or health farm offering a formula of high quality service + nature and calm + a well-kept environment, which results in enjoyment for the body and mind. Spa and sauna products are sourced from local plants and produce – try a lilac-blossom oil massage at the Annas Hotel spa, a linden mask at Mārcienas Manor, or bathing in milk and strawberries, a body wrap of strawberries and cream, an amber-dust scrub or sea-algae mask at Kalnamuiža.

In Kurzeme, on the shores of the usma Lake, you’ll find SPA Hotel Usma, offering a body pampering ritual based on flowers and plants, which took first place in the body treatment category at the 2009 European Health & Spa awards. at the Jurguci guest farm near cesvaine you’ll benefit from a particularly personal approach to the spa ritual – the farm’s owner, a certified physician, offers a special treatment session using her own, home-made natural skin-care products.

Juice Therapy and Body Detox Ayurveda, one of the most ancient and frequently practiced lifestyle teaching systems, sees the human body as a unified whole, in which all processes should take place naturally and freely. To maintain a healthy body and mind, it is important to ensure a free flow of energy and cleanse the body of any toxins, negative emotions, harmful substances and stress it has accumulated. your trip to Latvia is an excellent chance to do this! annual juice therapy programmes are a popular detox method. The cells of the organisms are cleansed and renewed, while sugar and cholesterol levels are lowered. Freshly squeezed juice is especially beneficial, as it contains vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. The therapy strengthens immunity, restores natural bodily processes and improves general well-being. Latvian-grown organic fruits, plants and vegetables are used for juice therapy. The season begins with birch and maple saps, most effective in spring. Juice therapy fasts are available throughout the year in Latvia.

you can enjoy the benefits of juice therapy in Jūrmala, at the Baltic Beach Hotel and the Jantarnij Bereg health resort. a well-known pioneer of the juice therapy movement in Latvia, dagnija Bruvere has designed these programmes with her team as meditative getaways from the daily routine, improving mental and physical well-being. The Jaunķemeri rehabilitation centre’s traditions, established over 40 years, rely on the maximum possible use of natural resources. Its Magic of Juice programme includes a healthy diet, physiotherapist and nutrition specialist consultations, massages (also underwater), lymphatic drainage, as well as mud treatments and more.

other types of detox programmes are also available in Latvia. Cleansing diets offered by spa centres and guest houses can range from 1 to 3 days in length, and offer physician-designed programmes which include meals of organic, minimally prepared fruit or vegetables, in combination with massages, sauna visits, yoga, etc. Health resorts, rest centres and farms also offer water fasts (advocating the exclusive use of clean, still water) alongside other health procedures. you only need a short time to enjoy some cleansing water treatments or baths, but it’s also possible to choose a longer programme – the baths can be enhanced with combinations of oils and minerals, herbs, milk products and honey, as well as skin care products.

Hydrotherapy baths provide a more serious detox option, stimulating sweating, removing impurities and fat deposits, and strengthening blood vessels. colon cleansing (hydro-colon therapy) is also very effective – after a computer-assisted diagnosis, purified water is administered through the colon, improving intestinal flora, leading to better skin and general well-being, and getting rid of toxins and excess weight. Experts also recommend following expressly designed herbal treatment programmes for at least 3-4 weeks, carefully choosing the most suitable for your state of health, and supplementing it with nutritional advice.

REJuvEnaTIon and RELaxaTIon

If you’re in Latvia for a couple of days or longer, we recommend taking the time for some health and beauty care away from the bustle of Riga and other big cities. There, close contact with nature, practices and traditions passed down from our ancestors, as well as a good knowledge of the

latest global trends act as creative inspiration for a range of health and rejuvenation practices. A visit to a countryside treatment or relaxation centre will give you the chance to fully enjoy nature and its bounty, and the healing peace and quiet will let you truly get away from it all.

Beauty services are a top priority of health tourism in Latvia, and not without reason – since beauty treatments are not seasonal, they can be enjoyed throughout the year. Furthermore, coming to Latvia for health improvements and other procedures and services is far more

discrete than staying at home – as no one knows you here, you can choose to be less public about it. Prices are also appealing – rates for beauty services in Latvia are around 2-3 times lower than in Western Europe, while highly qualified personnel ensure a sense of security.

BEauTy TREaTMEnTS

Take the time to pamper your face and body and you’ll feel the difference within!

It doesn’t take long to enjoy some beauty and well-being treatments. Riga and other large towns in Latvia have a range of beauty salons big and small, allowing you to choose the most appealing or suitable one for you. now you and your body can take pleasure in several hours of undivided attention, leaving any worries and daily stress at the door of the friendly and pleasantly furnished salon. customers of any age group can achieve their desired results with the extensive range of beauty treatments on offer.

Facial Skin Care Treatments Latvian beauty experts are internationally educated and have an intricate knowledge of the world’s most popular cultures of beauty – at our beauty salons, centres and institutes you can pick a familiar and favourite technique, or try out an exotic treatment or something typically Latvian for the first time.

The most popular beauty treatments use world-renowned skin care products: Sothys, Bernard Cassiere, La Prairie, Simone Mahler, Menard, J.F. Lazartique, Gernétic, Proglyme, Janssen, Sanoderm etc., as well as the methods of cosmecanique, Endermologie, d’arsonval, etc. Specifically Latvian nuances are added by the use of locally produced eco-cosmetics (Madara Ecocosmetics, Aroma Art, Anna Liepa, Trejdeviņi, etc.).

If you have a special occasion planned (an opera or theatre performance, banquet, reception, etc.) during your visit to Latvia, beauty salons also offer evening make-up services: either suited to the nature of a specific event, or in a more dramatic style (including accessories), as well as make-up for photo or video shoots, wedding make-up for the bride and guests (home visits also available), fantasy style make-up or even face-art.

Body Treatmentsa great way to boost your energy levels, feel better and look more refreshed is a massage. In Latvia, you can treat yourself to a classic massage, or choose from many styles of massages derived from different global cultures and practices. Everything (massage type, execution, intensity, length, etc,) depends on what you wish to achieve. If you’re a fan of classic massage, choosing might be difficult– almost every beauty or massage salon, spa centre, countryside health resort and guesthouse offers back, leg, foot and head massages, both therapeutic and relaxing. If you’re looking for something more unusual, consider local, Latvian methods of massage (for example, linden blossom, honey or cranberry) or other national, authentically performed methods of massage, like a Thai foot massage by a Thai masseuse, an amber, pine and fir-cone massage carried out by a certified Latvian masseur, or a Champi or Sambahan massage in the hands of an Ayurvedic expert. a bathe or refreshing shower has a direct effect on beauty and well-being. To organise an inspiring bathing session in your hotel room, get hold of some world renowned spa and bath products, or maybe some sourced from local Latvian plants, fruits and other ingredients (these can be found in pharmacies, health and beauty stores, organic shops or any shopping centre). Spa centres, beauty salons and health facilities also offer various types of baths and showers.

Cosmetic Injections If your health and beauty are in need of some minimal but effective improvement that only takes a short amount of time, beauty salons and plastic or cosmetic surgery practices offer injections of varying intensity: restylane, botox, collagen, hyaluronic acid, as well as fat transfers, which are a quick and effective method of smoothing crows’ feet, forehead wrinkles, and lip lines or wrinkles, as well as smoothing scarred areas of skin and generally improving the skin’s appearance in the facial, neck, cleavage, arm and armpit areas.

Sauna

What Happens in a Sauna? In Latvia’s most widespread type of sauna – the wet sauna – steam (or the ‘sauna spirit’) is created by splashing cold water onto hot stones with a special bucket and ladle. When the body heats up, bracing swattings with bunches of branches and plants (besoms) traditionally take place. The sauna is usually heated up to about 75–85 °c. one of the most popular sauna rituals is cooling-down rapidly by jumping into a cold pond or river (a pool or shower also works), or an ice-hole or snowdrift in winter! after experiencing such contrasts of temperature, your body will be strengthened and refreshed, and you’ll notice the increased elasticity and healthy appearance of your skin.

Customer FirstIt is best and safest to take a sauna in the company of an expert. a qualified sauna attendant will recommend the most suitable type of sauna, explain the procedure, be familiar with the correct intervals between steaming, keep an eye on your state of health, recommend sauna body care products and most importantly of all – give you a proper swatting! The sauna attendant will know whether to stop at raising some steam, give you some gentle strokes with the birch besom, or to go all out with it. you’ll achieve the best results by devoting about 2.5-3 hours to a sauna visit.

Sauna Accessories and Rituals Steaming is simultaneously a kind of aromatherapy – in the hot and humid air, the scent of the branches intensifies tenfold. Besoms are prepared in summer; the most widespread are birch, oak, linden and juniper branch brushes, but sauna experts use a whole range of different plants. a besom of lilac blossoms is used for bone pain and inflammations, linden flowers cleanse the skin, maple renews a sense of balance, juniper is used to relieve stress, while a poplar besom is good for hangovers, etc. In summer, freshly-picked and bound besoms are used for swatting, while in winter, previously dried ones are soaked in cold water before entering the sauna. during the summer, fresh plants and flowers are laid out in the sauna, their scent adding to an unforgettable experience. dried herbal mixtures and hay are used in winter.

Other Sauna Rituals:These include slowly sipping herbal teas (invigorates and encourages sweating), massage and beauty treatments (to reinforce the effects of the sauna). If the sauna has the facilities, try a contrast shower. There is a wide range of sauna body care products available in shops (both locally produced and global brands), and you can also make them yourself.

Types of Sauna in Latvia:Sauna: the air is hot and dry (75–95°c), the interior – wood, with multilevel sweating shelves. Humidity is 5-10%, and switching temperatures rapidly is advisable. Wet herbal sauna: the air is humid, heat is produced by oven-heated stones, while steam is created by pouring water on the rocks. Multiple steamings and coolings-down are advisable. Steam sauna: the air is humid (40–65%), temperature – low (40–50°c). Thermae: has floor and wall heating, used for cold and warm water bathing. Black smoke sauna: also has an oven covered with stones, but no chimney (thus the name). Water is thrown on the stones to create steam.

Sauna TipsLike every ritual activity, steaming also has its unwritten laws, and some of them should be known to every sauna goer. Sauna rituals include rapid temperature changes, so before you start, you should assess your state of health and choose the most suitable temperature, humidity conditions and length of the sauna ritual. The rest period between sauna visits should be twice as long as the time you spend steaming. after your post-sauna bathe or shower, you don’t need to use a towel – the air will dry you, but the sense of well-being will remain. Post-sauna, don’t jump in the pond, ice-hole or pool on your own. after taking part in a physical activity, you can enter the sauna straight away, however, if you’ve been under any mental strain, take a rest first.

Fire, water, earth and air – the basic elements of life infuse the sauna ritual with the essence of natural force. The physiological effects of a visit to the sauna are vital: sweating is encouraged to cleanse the body

of toxins. The hot air of the sauna, the temperature contrasts between steaming and the following swim, as well the aromatic substances used all stimulate bodily functions and improve general well-being.

naTuRE’S BounTy

Climatic conditions of high relative humidity and a long growing season have encouraged Latvia’s biodiversity, and its fields, forests, countryside, water and soil hide a whole store of natural remedies. Nature’s plentiful bounty is freely available here and has a wide

variety of uses. So if you’re a devotee of natural health and beauty care methods, we recommend getting to know some of the resources to be found in Latvia’s natural environment, and taking advantage of their valuable properties yourself or with expert assistance.

Plantsover 1800 plant species grow in Latvia, approximately 300 of which have been listed as protected. Just one square metre of a meadow is home to hundreds of medicinal plant species. any one of these can be beneficial to your health, so take a ramble through the countryside and pick an armful of fragrant flowers and herbs! you can also purchase packaged herbal remedies (dried herbs, herbal teas, tinctures, infusions, etc.) at local organic farms, pharmacies, organic shops and the market.

Recommended Herbs:Chamomile (Chamomilla chamomilla) is calming and energizing, while a chamomile compress soothes pain and inflammation and cleanses the skin. Meadowsweet (Filipendula) is used for colds and sleeplessness. Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla) helps in the treatment of liver, kidney and stomach problems, stimulates gland activity and purifies the blood. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) stimulates appetite and digestion and is used as a light painkiller and sleep aid. Nettles (Urtica) are used in the treatment of respiratory infections and coughs, as well as kidney, urinary tract and gynaecological problems.

HomeopathyHomeopathy has a long-standing history in Latvia. This method of treatment, using remedies of plant, animal and mineral origin that are therapeutic when used in small doses, but cause symptoms of illness when used in large doses, was promoted to the level of medicine by the first homeopaths, who opened the Russian Empire’s first homeopathic pharmacy in Riga in 1833 and quickly became popular. Today’s homeopathic pharmacies have inherited their remedy-preparation and trade principles – you can pay them a visit in Riga, at 14 Skolas iela or 12 Biķernieku iela. Homeopathic remedies stand out with their dosage methods and the appreciation of individual uniqueness. They can be used at any age and state of health, even in cases when traditional medicine is not recommended. Homeopathic remedies can be used in conjunction with other medications and treatment, including massage, acupuncture or physiotherapy.

Underground Spring WaterLatvia has over a thousand different types of above ground springs. Latvian spring water is classified by its composition: clearwater, limewater and iron water springs, therapeutic sulphur springs, healing mud, the sulphide spring water of Ķemeri and Baldone, and the sodium chloride spring water used at the Jauņķemeri, Vaivari, Jantarnij Bereg and Belorussija health resorts. Sulphur, bromine salt and sodium spring waters are used therapeutically in pools, showers, baths, and internally.

Mud Latvia’s healing mud contains water, minerals and organic compounds. The mud develops over a long period of time, and the high degree of decomposition of the compounds forming the mud is unique to Latvia. Therapy using mud has long-standing traditions in Latvia. nowadays, local peat and freshwater mud (sapropel) are used at treatment facilities and spa centres, which offer Latvian-made mud products and therapy to improve circulation, for a painkilling and anti-inflammatory effect, and to treat various illnesses.

Clayanother of Latvia’s natural resources is clay – a source of all the chemical microelements necessary for the body. In Latvia, blue clay is most often used for its healing properties. The microelements and minerals in the clay have a wide range of therapeutic effects: flint improves soft tissue function, while nitrogen, calcium and potassium absorb inflammatory substances, diminish skin blemishes and cleanse the pores. clay is most often applied externally, but can also be used internally.

SandThe sand on the seashore is great for walking barefoot – treading on the dry sand, you’ll take pleasure in hearing it ‘sing’, while the soft massage of the sand grains will have a calming effect, improve circulation and regulate the nervous system. and when you wade into the sea, the soles of your feet will sense the raised patterns in the sand – a massage felt by the whole body.

GREEn TouRISM

A trip to Latvia is relaxation for the body and mind: untouched nature, the Baltic Sea, picturesque rivers and lakes, forests, meadows and fields all lie within a 100 km radius of Riga and other towns, and a visit requires only a small amount of time and financial input. Latvians

have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, and contact with it will rejuvenate your strength, energy and happiness. A swim in the sea, a hike along a river, a post-sauna evening or a sip of cool spring water provides an unforgettable experience and inspiration to return again.

The CoastLatvia’s Baltic Sea coast has almost 500 km of white, clean quartz sand beaches (both lively and busy or quiet and secluded), pine forests and dunes and ancient fishing villages, all waiting to be explored at any time of the year and in any weather.

draw strength from the sea through active enjoyment – swimming, sailing, kiteboarding or windsurfing, diving, going on hikes or horse rides, nordic walking or riding a bike along the beach (equipment is available for hire). If you’re not feeling very energetic, take a leisurely stroll along the white sand, giving the soles of your feet a natural massage. on the quiet, secluded beaches you’ll feel like the only person on earth, and the healthy, phytoncide-rich coastal forest air will ease your breathing. crashing waves form a symphony of sound that is calming and healing. The shore of the Gulf of Riga lies less than an hour from Riga by car or public transport, while the Baltic Sea coast is only a two- or three-hour drive away. The sea and coastal forests are freely accessible.

Hills and Forests Latvia’s hills offer beautiful views, whether you’re hiking or nordic walking in summer or skiing and snowboarding in winter. Several places in Latvia have earned the nickname Little Switzerland – the old town of Tukums and the ancient valley of the River Gauja with its surrounding hills in Sigulda. over 500 castle hills and mounds are safekeepers of ancient history and offer great walks and nature watching.

Latvia has world-class downhill sports athletes – skiers, snowboarders and bobsledders. our bobsleigh crew, lead by Jānis Miniņš, has won prizes at the World cup and World championship, while skeleton racer Mārtiņš dukurs finished second at the Winter olympics in vancouver, and was winner of the World cup and European champion in 2010. These athletes began honing their skills on our hillsides, and they can still be met at the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track. any visitor can try out a ride on the vučko tourist bob. Many of Latvia’s hills offer visitors the chance to enjoy winter sports on comfortable and well-

maintained runs (complete with full equipment rental), while in summer, you can try out an obstacle course or summer toboggan ride.

almost half of Latvia’s territory is covered by forests – the unspoilt jewels in the crown of our natural environment are a place for renewing strength and energy, from walks or hikes in the company of a guide to mountain-bike orienteering. Guided walks in foreign languages are available at the Līgatne nature Trails in the Gauja national Park. at the Slītere national Park, a guide will lead you along the steep banks of the ancient shore of the Baltic Ice Lake, while at the Ķemeri national Park you can walk the Sloka Lake trail, the Swamp Forest boardwalk and the Kaņieris castle Mound nature trail. The Ragakāpa nature Park trail in Jūrmala leads you past 300-year-old pine trees on a superb walk through the coastal dunes.

Rivers and Lakes Latvia is criss-crossed by almost 12 500 rivers, the largest of which are the daugava (known as the ‘river of fate’ to Latvians), the long and picturesque Gauja River, the one and only venta, and the wide and voluminous Lielupe River. The rivers offer a wealth of recreation opportunities: during the warm season they become a meeting place for boating fans, while a swim in their tranquil coves is perfectly refreshing on hot summer days. For the best possible experience, however, take the time for a several-day boat trip – you’ll enjoy swimming, savour freshly caught fish, and delight in the picturesque and unusual scenery of the river and its banks. There are about 130 waterfalls to be found on Latvia’s rivers, while Europe’s widest waterfall, the venta Falls (during spring floods it reaches up to 250 m in width) is located in the centre of Kuldīga, a European destination of Excellence in Tourism. In spring and autumn you can see salmon and vimba bream dancing above the water here (as well as in other rivers) Birdwatching is also popular in spring and autumn, by the largest lakes, rivers and flood-lands (in Latgale – by the Lubāna Lake), where you can learn from experts and if you’re lucky, discover a new bird species.
