During the suburbanization period of the 1950s through 1970s, housing policies—such as “redlining,” and the discriminatory lending practices of the Federal Housing Administration and the G.I. Bill—excluded minorities from suburbanizing. Many white households migrated to the suburbs while minorities largely remained in urban neighborhoods like South Providence.
The Hart-Celler Act of 1965 abolished the quota system and opened the US to non-European immigrants. Many settled in communities like South Providence and were a primary force in stabilizing urban neighborhoods.
Policies dating back to the 1950s explain the current diversity of Broad Street.
