It treats the soaring violin andthe sonorous cello as one instrument, and with theorchestra, creates a passionate, richly melodic andfinely crafted musical palate that also includes somehumorous and conversational moments. Sibelius’mystical tone poem, based on Finnish mythology, beautifully evokes a magic land of enchantment.Mathis der Maler contains some of Hindemith’s mostbeautiful music. Based on the famous Isenheim altar-piece tableau, Hindemith’s radiant music features aconcert of angels, depicts the tragedy of death, andculminates in visionary majestic alleluias.
