Dear students,
Welcome to the University of Parma. This Brief Guide is a useful tool which provides you with the main in-formation regarding the course catalogue, the services and facilities of our University, in order to guide you during the first steps of your new academic path. Inside this booklet, you will find the list of degree and post-graduate courses, the addresses, the contacts and essen-tial descriptions of what the University of Parma offers you to enrich your study and life experience: online services, a website and social networks, libraries, laboratories, top-level research, exchange pro-grammes with foreign countries, support for disabled students, lan-guage courses, sports facilities and much more. The University of Parma, which boasts a thousand years of history, has now about 25,000 students and 1,800 professors, researchers and ad-ministrative staff. Its rich course catalogue is made up of 39 First Cycle Degree Courses, 39 Second Cycle Degree Courses (4 of which entirely held in English) and 6 Single Cycle Degree Courses organized into 9 Departments. In the city centre you can find the Departments of the areas of arts and humanities, economics, law and politics, medicine and surgery and veterinary science. The other scientific Departments (areas of food and agriculture, pharmacy, engineering and architecture, mathematical, physical and natural sciences) are located in the Univer-sity Campus, a 77-hectare area in the southern side of the city which also hosts a brand new Technopole and cutting-edge sports facilities for all students. In addition, Parma is a very nice human-scale city, where life is pleas-ant and inhabitants are friendly and welcoming: it is not by chance that more than half of our students comes from other Italian provinces, and, consequently, our University is ranked among the top ones for the num-ber of non-resident students. Welcome, research, attention and innovation: they are the key ingredi-ents to fully accomplish our mission, that is to grant you a complete and authentic experience of personal, intellectual and professional growth. You are, indeed, the centre of all our activities, the heart of one of the most important European Universities, which still preserves its ancient prestige while projecting itself into a promising future.
A really warm welcome to all of you.

5BRIEF GUIDE 20174 UNIVERSITÀ DI PARMAwww.unipr.it
IN EUROPEFOR A THOUSAND YEARS
FROM PARMA TO LEADING POSITIONS
According to the historian Ernest Dümmler, Parma has been a “celebrated seat of learning” since the 11th century, attracting students from countries beyond the Alps. Sinibaldo dei Fieschi and Simone de Brion studied in Parma before becoming, respectively, Pope Innocent IV and Pope Martin IV. In the 16th century the House of Farnese founded in Parma one of the most prestigious University colleges ever seen in Italy. In the 18th century Parma welcomed some distinguished scholars like the Illuminist philosopher Condillac, while in the early 19th century its popularity was so high that Napoleon extended its jurisdiction as far as Alessandria.
UP-TO-DATE STRUCTURES AND SERVICES
The University of Parma has been able to maintain its vitality for a thousand years thanks to its key capacity of constantly keeping up with the times. Nowadays, the results of such success are evident in every department, through its links with the world of work, its technological facilities and its excellent research activities. Moreover, there is a continuous effort towards the improvement of services to ease students’academic life, to make their educational background more effective and to simplify their access to working careers. Every year a new and better solution is found.
RENOWNED SINCE THE AGE OF CHARLEMAGNE
It was right in Parma, in 781 A.D., where Charlemagne and the monk Alcuin of York met to lay the foundations for the rebirth of the Palatine School: this was the first important citation of the cultural vocation of the city and its higher education activities. With an imperial decree dated 13th March 962 AD, Emperor Otto I conferred on Uberto, the Bishop of Parma, the initiation of the University in the ‘Diploma’ - a document which granted the Bishop the power to order and elect legal leaders, allowing them to exert their authority throughout the Empire.
SIGNIFICANT FOR GREAT PERSONALITIES
A number of important profes-sors and students chose to study in Parma as far back as the 11th
and 12th centuries; to name but a few, the theologian San Pier Da-miani or the monk Donizone, who praised the high school of Parma in its “Vita comitissae Mathild-is”(1115): “Parma leads the way in grammar […] the seven arts are taught with passion”.The prestige of Parma further lasted for the following centu-ries: even the famous poet Pe-trarch sent his son to study there.

A LOVELY PLACE TO LIVE
UNIVERSITÀ DI PARMAwww.unipr.it
A FRIENDLY CITY FOR MODERN LIVING
Busy but not chaotic, tidy but not boring, Parma is a perfect combination of beauty and efficiency: a pleasant medium-sized city of about 194,563 inhabitants where riding a bicycle is the ideal way to move around. The neighbouring peaceful countryside is enclosed by the fascinating Po valley to the north and the woods of the Apennines to the south. The Ligurian sea is also an hour away by car. The high quality of living in Parma is immediately perceivable and the University perfectly takes part in this favourable mix of florid economic activi-ties, especially the remarka-ble food industry and the typical pleasure for life of theinhabitants of Emilia Romagna.
From 2003, Parma is also the location of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Moreover, in December 2015, Parma obtained the UNESCO label of “Creative City of Gastronomy”.
SO MUCH TO SEE, TO DO, TO DISCOVER
Parma offers a wide range of cultural and entertainment opportunities all year round: about twenty theatres and cinemas, exhibitions, museums and art galleries where you can admire the masterpieces of the local painters Correggio and Parmigianino and a worldwide famous opera house, the Teatro Regio. Music has a leading role in the city, with the Verdi opera festival or the international jazz music festival, rock concerts and performances in the modern Paganini Auditorium designed by the well-known architect Renzo Piano. Great importance is given to performing arts as well, with an international theatre festival. Just choose one of the events Parma offers throughout the year and you will realize that cultural life here never stops.

DISABILITIES or SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS The Delegate of the Rector, Prof. Caronna, and her collaborators welcome disabled students at the Eli-Che. Eli-Che provides assistance in creating personalized academic curriculums as well as grants, the latest equipment and services required for personal needs (Law 104/92).Students with certified disabilities of 66% or higher, or possessing the Law 104 certification must submit the documentation to the Students’ Registry Office of their course, since they are entitled toexemption from university tuition fees. Through the Eli-Che, these students may request transportation, may be given use of an electric scooter, can request to be supported by a student tutor or peer who attends the same course and who will be paid for 150 hours of work (Law 17/99).Disabled students can also follow specific programmes for Erasmus scholarships, can do voluntary work and obtain ECTS credits, can co-organize events and can take part in sport activities (if a disabled student is accompanied to a CUS course by a tutor peer student, they will both obtain ECTS credits for sport activities). The Eli-Che service also welcomes and helps students with certified disabilities of less than 66% and students in temporary or permanent need, including students with learning
disabilities and with Special Educational Needs (B.E.S.). Students with Specific learning difficulties (D.S.A.) must hand in their certified diagnosis to the Eli-Che (if they do not have any diagnosis or they have an out-of-date diagnosis, they can ask for a new one at our assistants at the Local Health Service); this way, the Delegate and her professional collaborators can plan specific educational programmes. Thanks to special agreements, the Eli-Che also dedicates particular attention to students with autistic spectrum disorder.Contacts: The “Eli-Che”, V.lo dei Mulini, 5.Delegate Phone Number: 0039/0521/903554 – mobile phone: 329/0189240;Reception: 0039/0521/903572Website: www.dis-abile.unipr.ite-mail: [email protected]@[email protected]
