The Brief.

The brief identifies that you must consider the format of the book and the ‘printed’ surface re-invented and the infinity of books embraced.

The concept behind my project of The Waitress is playing off the idea of the characters, the waitress and the chair whether they actually existed. Like many fairytales you never know when or where it has happened, quote from the story “it is difficult to remember what happened to them. Some say they never existed. But I for one don’t believe them.”

CONCEPT

This is why I have been exploring the form of the content on the page, so it is how you have to read it correlates with the ideas of the story.

Layout.

The layout of the book is to reflect the growing and strengthening idea of whether the chair and the waitress existed, from the beginning “She never knew how it happened, but there was once a chair stuck on the back of a waitress.” Not starting at the beginning creates the perfect build up for a fairy tale.

This is all in the adjustments of the column width the text sits in, small and thin coloumns portray a fragile idea which slowly grows into something stronger as it appears to be more real. Seen as the the colum grows outwards, however even this starts to retreat and finally left with a akmost blank pages,

THE BOOK

with nothing left on it except a single sentance, “Some say they never existed. But I for one don’t believe them”. Shrinking down again to something small and petite makes you question whether it did exist.

This is also reflected in the interactivity that my book has to offer being on the iPad.

Interactivity.

In order to create the new page and with the digital technology today, the interactive side of what you are doing is broad. This is why I am proposing is another way to explore this quality within the book.

The idea is that with every touch on the screen, all of the content will fade, the opacity will be dropped, and every touch it will continue to drop. Needing to swipe the screen to turn the page, the fading of the story is inevitable to convey the idea that the characters also were disappearing.

POSTERS

By the end of the novel you might have already faded the novel so much you cannot read it. If this happens you can shake the iPad to reset the novel and start a fresh.

Layout Specifications.

The type and layout specifications as required by ISTD upon enty. It explains my general use of typography and layout in order to get my concept across using my own specific medium which dictates the form.

Aligned with baseline grid, the type is automatic

leading to the point size. This reflects the copy of text is simple and is

unaltered to not interfere with fitting on the page, no

need for extra spacing.

10 column grid.Size of columns part of concept, each page changes. System of shifting up or down half a column width.

Dimensions1024 px by 768 px

iPad screen size, the dimensions of document setup is designed for the iPad only.

Body Copy - NeoTech, Regular10.23 pt/ 14 pt.

NeoTechTypeface designed by Sebastian Lester, and released by Monotype Corporation in 2004. The concept behind my type choice is the idea of the characters disappear-ing, with some never believing they were there. This typeface is futuristic, to convey the characters wherea-bouts. Decribed as futuristic, without being ‘crude, gim-micky or ephemeral’.

Background - NeoSans, Bold Italic502 pt.

NeoSansTypeface released in companion in NeoTech, it is bold italic, but not overpowering due to the reduced tint percentage and as it sits in the background.
