What started as a branding brief, turned into much more when I dsicovered the potential for illustration and pattern design.

The logo itself utilises the stroke tool, and recognises how visually striking the combination of black and white can be.

Adopting a ‘crest’ shape, the logo is self contained and can therefore be applied to a range of items such as business cards, swing tags and even skate decks.

Deliverables include seven surface pattern designs, which are then applied to a range of products such as apparel, packaging and even online material.

The main inspiration for the illustrations is taken from the so called ‘punishments in hell’ assigned to each sin.

Considering this is dark subject matter, I used playful vector illustrations and bright colour combinations to bring a more light hearted tone of voice.

The colour combinations are also reminiscent of the skateboarding world in the 1980’s.

The Brief

The range of seven patterns I have designed adopt their own individual visual style, with seven different colour pallettes used and seven different playful approaches utilised.

The illustrations themselves take the ‘punishments in hell’ and interpret them in the most visually striking way they can.

The patterns have been used across a range of products, most notably a collection of wrapping papers.

This allows for maximum exposure of the pattern without interference from any external elements.

The Seven Sin Patterns

In order to realise the brief to its full potential I realised I would need a range of skate related products, such as boards and wheels.

Unable to physically make skateboards I have instead proposed a range of solutions. All visuals would be applied to 7 ply Canadian maple decks.

Taking the seven sins into account, and multiplying that by the variety of ways I have interpreted either the logo or the illustration I have calculated that there are 21 possible deck options.

The three shown here display the three different ways to interpret my designs.

One is the repeated pattern approach, two is the logo combined with a specific colour combination and three is an enlarged, singular version of the illustration.

Due to the brief entailing branding of a skate company I knew I would have to create physical deliverables such as clothing, meaning packaging would be required as well.

The design of the box itself is kept simple, to allow for maximum impact of the patterns and logo design.

Swing tag designs take the logo and alters it slightly to allow for 5mm matte black eyelet placement.

Comes in three different varities: S, M & L for each of the seven sins.

Block colour used on the top of the packaging, whilst more detailed repeated pattern is used on the bottom.

Several different box dimensions available to accomodate a range of products.

Inspired by the seven different illustration colour schemes, I went on to design a typeface that features briefly in the logo.

The typeface itself is all uppercase and visually striking. I used the different colours to create a 3D effect, and increase the aesthetic quality of the typeface.

The images featured here show how I went from the character illustration to the beveled typeface, and a few other variations.

Due to the seven illustrations, I in turn have seven typefaces, each slightly different.

The typefaces can then be applied to products relating to the brand such as skate decks, t-shirts and even limited edition posters.
