SYNERGY…. “combined effort” being greater than the parts.

AN OBJECTIVE OF THE CHAMBER AND ONE THAT WOULD BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY

Dear Valued Members,

Your Chamber applied for funding for two summer students recently (as mentioned in our last issue)

and we have been granted the funding. The selected students will work through a joint venture with the

Chamber of Commerce, United Way and the BIA for 10 weeks this summer on several projects within our

community. This is a great opportunity for our youth to experience and understand the importance of

Not-for-Profit organizations and the roll they play in the community. This project is yet another example of

how working together benefits everyone. Recently the Chamber partnered with the Wallaceburg Museum,

who hosted the first Wallaceburg tradeshow “Tip of the „Burg”. This event highlighted several of our new

businesses in town. Participants were Eternity‟s Touch, CKXS FM 99.1, Wallaceburg Downtown BIA, GSL

Group - Alternative Energy, Brent Foster, Select Finishing, Kinsmen, SOS (Save Our Sydenham), Latasia, EMC

Ready Mix and the Wallaceburg Chamber. With a special THANK YOU to Tim Horton’s and Chez Denise

Bistro & Café for providing the refreshments at the event.

SPECTACULAR … the only word that can describe our 13th Annual Business and Community

Excellence Awards Gala held in April. From the talented emcee‟s, the absolutely delectable dinner, to the

outstanding nominees and our nine Honoured Award Recipients (see inside), our gala was a night to remember

for all who attended. THANK YOU to all who volunteer their time to make this event happen and to our

door sponsors for their support.

The Economic Development Committee members have been selected and are meeting to set goals

and objectives. The members are Lisa Nogueira, Gene Schepens, Marielaine Douglas, Jeff Wesley, Suzanne

Brown, Mark Delanghe, Kevin Blake, Stuart McFadden and myself, contact them with any Wallaceburg

“Economic Development” issues.

As summer fast approaches we want to wish everyone a safe and fun filled season. We

look forward to seeing you at our Business After Hours held the second Thursday of every month. Look

inside your newsletter for dates, times and places.

Earth Day Success By Tammy Howlett

It’s wonderful to belong to a community that cares!

Over 500 members of our community pitched in to sprinkle some

love on Wallaceburg’s green space. 45 native trees and 40 perennials were

planted in 10 of our 34 parks and the rest cleaned up. Paw Paw Woods

was also successfully revitalized with the help of over 50 volunteers.

Working in collaboration with the Sydenham Field Naturalists

(SFN) intent to term Wallaceburg the Red Bud capital, we planted a good

portion of this beautiful magenta blossoming shrub/tree. Red Bud (Cercis

Canadensis) is a rare species only found growing naturally in South Western

Ontario.

On Earth Day (April 22nd) Erik Fields, Tom Chatterton and

Shirley Frye of SFN group worked hands on with W.D.S.S. high school

students, teaching them the mechanics of planting trees.

I am completely amazed that 20% of our community, consisting

of mainly youth, came together and pulled off such a rewarding project.

Even more amazed by how many sponsors donated their time, product or

funds. A huge thanks to Randal Van Wagner of the Lower Thames

Conservation Authority for provided funding resources for the trees.

The success of this project was due to diligence of the

co-ordinators Erik Fields, Ashley Dobbelaar, Francis Dobbelaar, Jane McGee

(and her crew), Don Martin, Dawne Mudford, Diane Burgess and myself

(Tammy Howlett). It always feels great to be part of a project where so

many hands are working together.

Tree plantings and clean-up crews consisted of a range of

community volunteers as well as specific groups including Neighborhood

Watch, Sydenham Field Naturalists, Wallaceburg District Secondary School,

H.W. Burgess and Holy Family.

Thank you everyone for lending a hand to help mend our earth!

Spirit and passion is appreciated serving as the driving force for positive

change in our community.

Camlaar Roofing & Renovations

Camlaar Roofing &

Renovations was established in

January 2003 as a home based

business in the community of

Wallaceburg. As the family run

business continued to grow,

Camlaar relocated to their

current location at 6890 Baseline Road in April 2009.

Camlaar Roofing & Renovations employ a dedicated

staff of 8 to 12 employees during the summer and winter

months. Employees are trained and certified IKO brand shingle

installers. Many employees have been with the company for

over 6 years.

Owner, Larry Campbell strives to make Camlaar

Roofing & Renovations a place where employees are proud of

their work, install product with confidence and exceed

customer‟s expectation with the final product.

Camlaar‟s number one priority is to provide customers

with top quality installations and is a guiding principle that leads

the company toward future success.

Camlaar are active supporters and volunteers in the

community. Most recently Camlaar donated their services to

the MRI Campaign by installing the roof on the Lottery Dream

Home.

Camlaar contribute to various organizations such as the

Canadian Cancer Society, Crimestoppers, the Police

Foundation‟s Rodeo, Core 12, the VIP program, and Minor

Football to name a few. They are also looking forward to being

involved with Wallaceburg‟s Annual Motor & Boat Outing

(WAMBO) this summer.

Over the next year, the company plans to develop a

sales & service showroom to showcase their products and

contracting skills. Camlaar renovations is a name you can count

on and trust to complete renovation work on your home.

Kinsmen Club

The Kinsmen Club,

first established in 1932 is the

oldest service club in the

community. The Kinsmen

Club currently has 15 mem-

bers and has a dedicated staff

of 1 full-time and 8 part-time

employees.

I n 2 0 0 9 , t h e

Kinsmen Club purchased the former Canadian Tire building

located at 1416 Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg with the goal of

renovating the building to make it a viable community centre and

gym. The building currently houses Goodwill Industries,

Zynergy and Hometown Bingo. When completed, the project

will be a 1 to 2 million investment in the community. The

Kinsmen have been looking to the community for input on how

to improve the facilities and services provided.

The Kinsmen Club has generated $130,000 in revenues

over the years through the Hometown Bingo which they donate

to 26 different charity groups that support the Bingos. The

Kinsmen Club use their proceeds to support many local minor

sports teams, Community Living, the Wallaceburg Sports Hall of

Fame, Cystic Fibrosis research, and other community projects.

The Kinsmen motto remains “Serving the community‟s

greatest needs” and the Kinsmen live by this.

April 2010

Wallaceburg Community Task Force

The Wallaceburg Community Task Force was estab-

lished in 2007 to find solutions to improve the economic devel-

opment of Wallaceburg.

The Wallaceburg Community Task Force consists of a

project manager, and administrative assistant and 9 committee

members representing a variety of community groups, service

clubs, the Chamber of Commerce, the Business Improvement

Area, education and labour as well as Chatham-Kent Economic

Development and a member of Chatham-Kent Municipal Coun-

cil.

The Wallaceburg Community Task Force has many

accomplishments to be proud of such as the recent announce-

ments of Advanced Emissions Technologies and Precismeca re-

locating and investing in our community.

The Wallaeburg Community Task Force combined with

all organizations in the community have worked together to

improve the quality of life in Wallaceburg.

When the end of the three year program approached,

special awards were planned to honour the Wallaceburg Com-

munity Task Force.

The Task Force has established a lot of current data for

employable status and the planning is in place for the momentum

of the Task Force to continue on through Vision 2020, secon-

dary downtown planning, the economic playing field and looking

to the Chamber to play a big role.

The Wallaceburg Community Task Force is a true ex-

ample of volunteerism.

Do you know of a business or community group that has

gone above and beyond your expectations?

Gives back to the community? Shows Civic Pride?

If so, why not nominate them for

“Business & Community Group of the Month”!!!

If you would like to nominate a business or community

group, please fill out the nomination form included in
