1.LOCATION: Weddings don’thave to be held in churches,so get creative with the site of

your ceremony or reception. Look fora location that matches the couple —the park where you had your first kiss,a quaint cabin in the woods for naturelovers, or even at a stadium for big-timesports fans. You’re only limited by yourimagination.

2.MUSIC: Let’s face it. “Here Comes theBride” just isn’t for everybody. If youwant your ceremony to have a non-tra-

ditional twist, there’s no reason you can’t walkdown the aisle to Rhianna or Coldplay. Thesoundtrack of your wedding ought to reflect yourunique personality.

3.PHOTOGRAPHY: Today’s wedding photo-graphs are about a lot more than posedpictures with family. If you find the right

photographer, you’ll have all kinds of options toreflect who you are, from creative, artistic portraitsto photojournalism that documents the entire dayin beautiful images. The key is finding a photogra-pher who clearly understands what you want andhas the skills to make it happen.

4.STATIONERY: Bland-lookingcream or white wedding invita-tions are out, and personalized

invites are in. Use the invitations you sendas a chance to reflect your personality andset the tone for what guests can expect atyour wedding.

5.ENTRANCE: If you want to make areal splash, come up with a cre-ative way to make your big

entrance at the wedding. Whether yourarrive on a white horse, NapoleonDynamite style, or show up in a stretchedHummer with bass blasting from the stereo, your first impression can be one guests neverforget.

6.CAKE: Your wedding cake doesn’t have tobe frilly and tiered. Watch “Cake Boss” or“Ace of Cakes” to get inspiration for just

how creative your cake can be. And if you reallywant to surprise people, forego the wedding cakein favor of the wedding donuts — or whateverdessert you want.

In many ceremonies, the groomspends several minutes standingbeside the alter awaiting his bride-to-be. Before the first notes of"Here Comes the Bride" are played, all eyes will be on him as he anx-iously awaits the start of the cere-mony. As such, it is essential thatthe groom look well polished andis dressed in accordance to thetone and scope of the wedding.

Because most weddings are formaloccasions, grooms often choose towear a tuxedo or high-end suit. Awell-fitted tuxedo combined with aformal shirt, tie and vest is theclassic wedding ensemble.Generally the tuxedo jacket is sin-gle-breasted with three buttons

and satin trim. This style is univer-sally flattering to most men'sframes.

Accessorizing the tuxedo can meandifferent things. Some choose towear a vest while others opt for acummerbund. Others add sus-penders. These accessories, includ-ing the tie or bow tie and the vest, can be all black like the tuxedo orcan be coordinated with the colorsof the wedding party. For example,if the bridesmaids are wearing but-ter yellow gowns, the groomsmencan wear yellow accessories. However, to set themselves apartfrom the groomsmen and ushers, grooms tend to go with the classicblack and white and forego colors.

On some occasions, grooms maychoose to wear a white tuxedo.

A well-groomed groom is also animportant wedding day must. Heshould be well-shaven and haverecently had a haircut. If he hasfacial hair, it should be trimmedand neat.

Because he will be photographedall day long, a groom can chooseto take some cues from his soon-to-be-spouse. He may indulge in amanicure to ensure nails and cuti-cles are neat. A dusting of translu-cent facial powder can tame shinyskin in photos. Some couples optfor teeth whitening prior to thewedding to ensure a sparklingsmile.

When dressing the rest of the menin a wedding, they should taketheir cues from the groom, but notbe carbon-copies of him. Fathers ofthe bride and groom can set them-selves apart with a pocket squareor a specially colored boutonniere.

The exception to a tuxedo or a suit

would be for a casual wedding, particularly one held at the beachor in a park. Then the groom canwear what will coordinate for theoccasion, such as a dress shirt andslacks, or even sandals and shortsfor the ultra-casual wedding.

While eyes certainly may betrained on the bride, the groomcan expect his share of admirers aswell. Being well dressed at his wed-ding is essential.

Grooming Tips: Finding the RightWedding Wardrobe for Your Groom

All eyes are typically on the bride during awedding. But that doesn't mean the groomshould be a shrinking violet. While the

bridal gown may garner the "oohs" and "aahs,"what the groom wears on his wedding day is quiteimportant as well.

BOLD or more subdued?or more subdued?

Onetrend isusing paleblue andbeige together for an elegant, understated look. The other is usingextremely bright colors to make a big impact.

Either way — subdued or extreme —you can find a combination that speaksabout who you are as a bride.

PALE BLUESIf there is any color that defines 2012

weddings, it’s a pale, smoky blue pairedwith beige.

This is a twist on the blues andchocolate browns that have been popu-lar in home decor for several years, although it works much better withtoned-down hues for weddings.

The end result is a beautiful combi-nation that evokes romanticism andwhimsy, creating a great base pallette

around which you can build your wedding decor.Think about it: combining light blue and pure white might look too

childish, almost like Cinderella’s grand ball. But when you add in beige, you create a warmer, more sophisticated look that is perfect for a modernwedding.

BOLD COLORSIf you want to take the opposite extreme,

bold splashes of color continue to be popu-lar this year. Using bright, highly saturatedcolors is a great way to add some visual“pop” and fun to your wedding.

This year’s hot colors range from Kellygreen to neon pink and hot orange, although they’re rarely monochrome. Bypairing colors that don’t typically go togeth-er — such as navy blue with hot pink — youcan create a unique look for your weddingthat gives it a distinctive visual DNA.

Deciding to go bold comes with risks, though. It’s easy to overdo it when dealingwith such bright colors, so use them inmoderation.

This year’s hot wedding colors areat two extremes: very subtle orvery bold.

THIS YEAR'S POPULAR COLORS ARE EITHER PALE BLUES AND BEIGES OR BOLD, BRIGHT SPLASHES. TAKE YOUR PICK.

Bring innature

THIS YEAR’S HOT THEME IS ANATURAL FIT FOR WEDDINGS

Nothing is more beautiful than the things cre-ated by Mother Nature, and today’s designersare going to great lengths to bring that beauty

into weddings, whether indoors or out.

Natural weddings start witha pallette of natural fabrics, typically cotton and linen, toset the tone. Inspiration foraccent colors can come direct-ly from nature, too, perhapseven from the location wherethe wedding will be held.Native plants and textureshelp give the wedding a senseof place. In other words, a natural

wedding is all about harmonywith your surroundings, wher-ever they may be.For the floral arrangements,

wildflowers or daisies can beloosely tied together in bunch-es to look as if they were just

picked from a garden. Theywill typically look less formalthan a traditional wedding butno less elegant whendesigned tastefully. And, while natural wed-

dings are becoming morepopular each year, they’re notonly about creating a styleinspired by the Earth. They’re

also about protecting it.Natural weddings should

incorporate ideas that arefriendly for the environment, such as printing recyclableinvitations and giving awayseed packets and organic,pesticide-free flowers toguests.

The theme is the thing in 2012One popular trend that continues this year is the themed wedding. It’s about alot more than picking a consistent style and colors. Instead, it goes the extrastep by weaving one central idea through the entire celebration, whether it’sone of the couple’s hobbies or a particular historical period. In a themed wed-ding, everything — decor, clothing, food and even a gift for guests — is centeredaround one idea of the couple’s choosing.

Layers andtextures

WEDDING GOWNS THIS YEAR ~ INSPIRED BY VICTORIAN PERIOD

Now that same romance is inspir-ing some of today’s most stunningwedding gowns. The emerging styleis one that does not directly copyVictorian dresses but evokes theromanticism of the era.

LAYERSThe most notable feature of

today’s Victorian-inspired dresses istheir use of layering to create a rich, full look.Rather than the more simple, flow-

ing styles that have become popularin recent years, the Victorian dresseswill pile layer upon layer of fabric tocreate textures that draw the eye.The skirt is the most obvious area

where layering can have its fulleffect, but the high neck lines andlonger sleeves of the Victorian eraalso create opportunities for design-ers to recreate the elegance of anoth-er time.

FABRICSAs part of the Victorian renais-

sance, designers are also turning tomore delicate fabrics that worktogether for a fairytale feel.Laces are coming back into fashion

as modern dresses try to emulate thefeminine, graceful manners so com-monly associated with the Victorianperiod. Sheers, laces and traditionalsatins may be layered together for acombination that creates delicateshoulder sleeves and intricatedesigns.

ROYAL INSPIRATIONMany people credit Kate

Middleton and her AlexanderMcQueen-designed wedding dress forthe resurgance of Victorian style. But the true inspiration was Queen

Victoria herself, who was the firstmodern bride to popularize the whitewedding dress.

There is an unmistakable romanceabout the Victorian period, from itsrich fabrics to its elaborate building

architecture and decor.

A delicious farewellA GOODNIGHT STATION GIVES YOUR GUESTS A TASTY SENDOFF

One of the biggest trends in 2012weddings is the use of a “goodnightstation” to give your guests a selec-tion of nice treats that they cancarry with them as they leave.

It’s something you can do in addi-tion or in place of giving weddingfavors.

The goodnight station is a smallbuffet where guests can pick fromdrinks, desserts and snacks thatthey take home with them, givingthem one last “thank you” for theirvisit.

You can include bags or boxes —preferably decorated to match yourtheme — and let your guests choosetheir favorite treats to take home.

Popular items at goodnight sta-tions include donuts, cookies, chocolates and a selection of hot orcold drinks, depending on the sea-son.

You can also opt for a candybuffet to leave suckers, jawbreak-ers, peppermints and other sug-

ary extras for your guests. The great thing about goodnight

stations and candy buffets is that

they can be customized to matchthe color, theme and decor of yourwedding.Do you remember

getting goodybags to take

home from friends’birthday parties as achild?

TIP: Match your goodnight station to the seasonTo keep your wedding fresh, fashionable and timely, make your goodnight station match the season of your wedding. In the spring and summer, you could serve ice cream, lemonade, freshfruit and frappés. Fall and winter weddings could use hot chocolate, pies or herbal tea.
