Health and BeautyIf you want to look as beautiful as you feel when you walk down the aisle, and do justice to all the work that has gone into creating a dream wedding, you need to devote enough time to your own health and well-being. Unfortunately, rushing around in an attempt to get everything done can disrupt your normal healthy diet and exercise regime, and the accompanying stress and tension can deplete energy reserves and play havoc with your skin and weight.

It’s always best to get into the habit of eating sensibly and exercising regularly a few months before your wedding. Don’t skip breakfast, take a healthy lunch to work, and have a cooked supper of lean meat, fish or chicken with lots of veggies. Cut right down on red meat, animal fats, wheat-based products, sugar, processed foods and take outs, and limit your caffeine and alcohol intake as far as possible.

Drink lots of water (tap is fine) and replace the odd cup of tea and coffee with herbal or green tea. Get up and go! If you’re looking to boost your metabolism, shed unwanted kilos and have loads of extra get up and go in the months leading up to the wedding, try these simple tips:• Amazing graze – Grazing on small meals through the day instead of having three hearty meals (or junk food all day followed by a huge evening meal), will keep your metabolism stoked up. This is because your body has to work constantly to process the food.• Keep it simple – Ditch high maintenance, high intensity workouts in favour of walking, whether outside, or on a treadmill at the gym. Just 30 minutes a day is plenty. Moderately gentle

exercise burns more fat than carbohydrates, while vigorous exercise does the reverse. • Build activity into your day – Making small changes, such as always taking the stairs or parking as far away from the entrance to the mall as you can, will keep your metabolism permanently raised.• Change your timing – Research shows that those who exercise early in the morning stick to their workouts. It may be an effort at first, but get up early, start the music pumping, and get it out of the way. It will have become a habit after three weeks.• Learn to dance – Make your body work harder by choosing something you have never done before. Good moves are the tango and salsa, as well as belly dancing, which is a great body and tummy workout that is guaranteed to get you into sizzling shape.

Take a breather If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the thought of all the things on your ‘to-do’ list that still need to be crossed off, take some time out for a mind and body break. The way you breathe is directly linked to way you think, feel and act. Most of us breathe between 12 and 18 times a minute and more when we are stressed, but if you reduce the breaths to nine, or less, per minute, this will increase your feelings of self-control. Find a peaceful place and start by taking ten slow, deep breaths. This can be useful whenever you feel anxious, and is also a helpful way of stopping an over-emotional reaction.

health, happiness and beauty, and you’ll be off to a flying start.

Eight months• Start a diet and fitness plan, bearing in mind that it is safe to lose around two kilograms per month over a six-month period. Aim to reach your ideal size in time for your dress fitting two months before the wedding. Sign up with a reputable weight loss organisation, take out membership at a gym or enrol for yoga or dance classes.• Find a hairdresser and makeup artist now, so you have plenty of time for trials and experiments. Some professionals will do hair and makeup at home, or come to the wedding venue itself.

Five months• By taking care of your skin now you’ll reap the benefits on both your big day and the honeymoon. Exfoliate every morning with exfoliating gloves before stepping into the shower, and apply moisturiser afterwards.• Begin a course of facials – just one treatment per month will have your skin looking smoother, clearer and glowing with health. Book each treatment with the same therapist, who will be able to monitor your skin’s progress and advise you on the products that are best for your individual needs.

Two months• Check your skincare routine – if you want to invest in any new products, doing so now will give your skin enough time to respond. Choose the best moisturiser for your skin type;

you might need one that’s ‘rehydrating’, ‘quenching’, ‘firming’ or ‘balancing’. Your day cream should have an SPF of 15 at the very least.• Schedule your pre-wedding beauty treatments, from having your legs waxed and brows professionally groomed to a professional fake tan, detoxing lymph-drainage massage, pedicure and reflexology. • A manicure is essential as you’ll want to show off your ring on the day – but not with flaky nails and ragged cuticles! Book one at your favourite nail spa or beauty salon. At home you should care for your hands daily with a pampering hand cream.

One month• Give your skin a boost with an intensive course of skin-perfecting serum underneath your everyday moisturiser, designed to smooth out fine lines while rejuvenating and replenishing.• Make a conscious effort to relax in a bubble bath every evening, surrounded by candles, and soak away those ‘to-do list’ tensions!• Two weeks before your wedding, file your nails down to two millimetres above the fingertips so they grow to an equal length for your wedding.• Have your hair trimmed ten days before the day and, if necessary, a colour touch-up.

Your wedding day• No matter how nervous you are, eat breakfast. It won’t make you feel sick or bloated, but it will line your tummy so the first

sip of bubbly doesn’t make you feel tipsy. Try some herbal tea and a fruit smoothie or some fresh fruit with plain yogurt, followed by a big bowl of oat porridge.• At some point before everyone arrives, take some time out for yourself by escaping for a quick walk, listening to some uplifting music or meditating.

Sleep like a baby One of the best health and beauty tips around is to get enough sleep: having roughly the same amount of sleep every night will make you feel less stressed as well as giving you a brighter and clearer complexion on your big day.

Grace and poise Your gown is perfect, but how’s your posture? Practice the correct body alignment by imagining that you are drawing a straight line through your weight-bearing joints: ankles, knees, pelvis and shoulders. This is your body’s central axis. Then turn your knees slightly outward to activate the muscles that lift your arches, thinking of your legs as vertical pillars of support. Your spine should now be aligned. Bow your head slightly to look at your feet, and then lift your face slightly, keeping the chin down. When you walk, lead with your head, and your arms will swing naturally. This is the way to bring out your inner grace and strength.

Big-day beauty So how do you decide on a look that’s right for you on your wedding day? Firstly, do some research. Look at magazines and file pictures of bridal makeup looks that appeal to you. Is there a common theme? Are you leaning more towards a dramatic look or a beauty look? Think of your

dress and décor as well as the theme of your wedding; the makeup should complement both.Aim to achieve a timeless effect, so that when you look at your photos in years to come they don’t look dated. Makeup should accentuate your natural beauty, and a good makeup artist will be able to use makeup to bring out your best features and perhaps downplay areas you are less happy with.Consider your skin type. The makeup needs to be suitable. Don’t go for a glowing, dewy look if your complexion tends to be oily – you don’t want to look like you’ve just been for a run! Equally, if your skin is dry, steer clear of a lot of powder as this can be ageing.

Makeup for daytime weddings should be soft and look good in natural light. If your wedding goes from day into evening, your makeup should also be able to translate well in artificial lighting. You always want to ensure that your makeup is going to last the entire ceremony, through the photo shoot, and even as far as the bridal suite!

A professional makeup artist can achieve cover-girl results and help you feel on top of the world. The top ten makeup tips According to the bridal makeup gurus:• Let the makeup enhance your natural beauty, not overpower it• You should be completely comfortable with your overall look• Do your research, both on the makeup and the makeup artist

• Choose a reputable and reliable makeup artist who is able to provide recent references, and book a trial• The makeup chosen should be suitable for your skin type• Know what you like and dislike• You should look like yourself – only better – and not like a completely different person• The makeup should be soft and flattering, not harsh • The staying power of your makeup is important; it should last through the ceremony and reception.• Choose a classic look

That professional touch Experts suggest that the bride as well as the bridal party should opt for a professional makeup artist. While you might think that you do a pretty good job with your own makeup, a professional makeup artist has been specifically trained to make you look even more amazing, and knows how to work with the photographer to show you in your best light. Never think it will be a waste to hire a good makeup artist; you spend a fair amount on professional photographs, so make sure that you look your best. What’s more, chances are you’ll be pretty nervous on the big day and will be most thankful to have someone there to do it for you.

Finding a good makeup artist Again, make sure you do your research. Most often, this involves word of mouth. Alternatively, you could visit reputable makeup counters. Look at a prospective makeup artist’s website or photos of other brides they have worked with. Ask about their training.

Have a trial run with a makeup artist. If you are unsure about

the final product, or less than completely happy, then don’t book them. Use your time at the trial wisely and communicate with your makeup artist. Don’t be afraid to tell them what you want. Be open minded. Remember that they are trained to make you look your best in photos, so sometimes it can be a good idea to let them show you what needs to be done.

Once you’ve had your trial, wear the makeup for a few hours. See how it wears and also how it photographs. For this reason, remember to take along a camera with you to the trial.

Looking aheadBooking a trial run with a makeup artist is the best way to guarantee that you get what you want.

Beauty tips If you do decide you’d rather do your own makeup, with a little practice, the right products for your skin type and some advice from top beauty consultants, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t learn some of the tricks of the trade.

Applying a thick layer of foundation doesn’t make it last longer, and thicker bases tend to accentuate rather than conceal lines and wrinkles. A liquid foundation has better staying power than a stick or compact and looks more natural in photographs. When applying blush go for a natural look, like the colour you would have in your cheeks after a brisk walk. Pinks work well on fair skin, reddish browns on medium and cinnamon or plum tones on dark. Layer powders over creams to make the
