INTRODUCTIONEveryone has a crucial role in managing, safeguarding, and advancing the Mount’s brand, which includes the proper use of the logo. Adherence to these Brand Standards by all employees, as well as approved vendors and partners, is essential to ensuring the Mount’s brand is strong and professionally represented. Included in these Brand Standards are usage options, which offer flexibility and alternative uses, without sacrificing consistency and unity.

Applications for trademark of the MSJ crest, University name, and seal were filed on January 11, 2019.

The Brand Standard Guide is available on MyMount on the Info & Policies page.

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH UNIVERSITY LOGO HIERARCHYThe LOGO is the top-tier visual element representing the institution as a whole, and should be used on all enterprise-wide communications, such as advertising, merchandise, recruitment materials, signage, stationery, websites, etc.

When the logo cannot be used because of size or design restrictions, the WORDMARK should be used instead.

The SEAL is strictly reserved for official documents, such as diplomas, award certificates, etc., as well as select presidential communications.

LEVEL 1: LOGO ELEMENTSThe Mount St. Joseph University logo is built with these five distinctive elements.

THE NAMEThe uniquely typeset university name is set in typeface Friz Quadrata. This typeface was chosen for its weight and design so that legibility would not be an issue across a number of mediums.

THE CRESTThe crest shape signals that Mount St. Joseph is now a University. The shape is simple, graceful, and strong.

THE SUNBURSTThe sunburst with a cross in the center is a modified version of the sun represented in the Seton Family Coat of Arms. Elizabeth Ann Seton founded the Sisters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In 1920, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati founded Mount St. Joseph University (then College of Mount St. Joseph). The sun represents God and God’s Charity. The cross represents Christ and is a visual connection to the cross at the top of the Mount’s official seal.

THE MSJThe MSJ letters inside the crest utilize the typeface Requiem and serve as an abbreviation of Mount St. Joseph, which is often used in verbal communication to identify the Mount.

THE 1920The 1920 at the bottom of the crest showcases when Mount St. Joseph University was founded. Set in the typeface Requiem, it ties back to the MSJ at the top of the crest.

CLEAR SPACE, MINIMUM SIZE, CORRECT LOGO USAGE• The absolute minimum clear space is equal to the

height of the “M” in MSJ, as shown to the right. It is generally preferred that a larger amount of visually uninterrupted space surround the logo for optimal visibility.

• When using the logo on print pieces, the resolution needs to be at least 300 dpi. When using the logo digitally, the resolution should be no less than 72 dpi at 100 percent. NEVER enlarge a digital logo file beyond 100 percent of its original size. If you need to obtain a larger version, please contact the Division of University Communications.

• All elements of all logos listed in this guide must be present any time they are used.

• The correct version for white or colored backgrounds must be used to ensure enough contrast and legibility.

• The logos may not be reconstructed, altered, recreated or redrawn and must be sized proportionately.

PRIMARY LOGO EXTENSIONSExtensions are customized versions of the logo for academic schools, academic departments, non-academic offices, and academic programs. These versions cannot be altered or redrawn and must be sized proportionately.

In the vertical version, the department/office name is centered underneath “Mount St. Joseph University” and spaced a minimum 50 percent of the height of the “M” from “MSJ” in the crest. Refer to the formula shown.

The font size for the contact information is not to be larger than the words “MOUNT ST. JOSEPH” in the logo. The preferred text color is navy blue PMS 648 (see official colors for details).

In the horizontal version, the department/office name is bottom-aligned with “1920” in the crest and left-justified, aligned underneath “Mount St. Joseph University”. Refer to the dashed lines in the examples shown.

Contact the Division of University Communications for assistance with primary logo extensions.

INCORRECT USAGE

CORRECT LOGO USAGE WITH PHOTOGRAPHYDo not allow an image or busy background to be shown through the logo. If the logo is placed over top of a busy photo or background, a white solid or screened box–no less than 60 percent opacity–must be placed behind the logo with the minimum safe space around the logo. This is to ensure that the logo is still easily seen along with the photo or background.

Be sure to maintain the white elements in the crest graphic and the safe space around the logo.

CORRECT USAGE WITH WHITE BOX
