The Downtown Bozeman Association presentsthe 2015 Christmas Stroll Poster Contest Winner!

W ith Christmas just around the corner and the 2015 Christmas Stroll quickly approaching, it was time, once again, for the Downtown Bozeman Association to issue a “call for artists” to enter the annual Christmas Stroll poster contest. While many artists submitted beautiful and creative designs, only one poster winner could be chosen.

This year’s honor goes to Bozeman photographer and illustration artist Seth Neilson, who entered the fun and festive design contest on a whim. Neilson, a Northwest native who has lived with his family in Bozeman for about five years, “created a nostalgic digital art piece of Santa in spurs featuring the Bridger Mountains in the background and traditional Christmas red and black colors and textures,” said Kelsey Schuerg, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture. She believes “the Bozeman community is sure to remember this creative, fun-spirited and festive design for years to come.” This colorful Santa design began as a sketch in Neilson’s sketchbook, where his creative process always starts. “Everything I do on the creative side starts with a sketchbook. It always starts on paper.” Neilson wanted to include Bozeman and the Christmas spirit in his design. He looked at poster winners from previous years to capture the magic of this wonderful holiday tradition. “I wanted to tie it to Bozeman and give it some sense of place but still let it feel what the Christmas Stroll and holiday celebration is all about,” he said. The festive Santa on a beautiful Bridger Mountain setting is sure to spark warm feelings of a classic Christmas tradition in Bozeman.

If you are looking for a new holiday tradition, be sure to purchase a 2015 Christmas Stroll button. Buying one is a way to make the Stroll even more

memorable, according to Ellie Staley of the Downtown Bozeman Association. “The Stroll button is truly a Bozeman tradition, along with the Stroll itself. It’s a timeless souvenir that many collect year after year to remember memories of spending time at the Stroll with their families,” she said. The Stroll itself has always been free, but for only $4, the button is your ticket to many great activities

throughout the day. These include Santa pictures at the Baxter Hotel, hay wagon rides from Soroptimist Park, kids activities throughout the day at the Emerson Cultural Center

and more. Purchasing the button also

gives you entry into a drawing for one of 20 great prizes, including six Bridger Bowl Passes, six Downtown Dollars prizes from $10 to $100 each, six combo-passes to the Museum of the Rockies and two 3-day Passes to the 2016 Sweet Pea Festival.

Proceeds from button purchases go to funding this fun event. “The button sales literally support the Christmas Stroll for years to come,” Staley said. “The DBA are gracious hosts of this most beloved Bozeman tradition but as a small private organization, we must come up with the funding for this event, which is generally around $15,000 a year.” The DBA is very thankful for the Stroll’s wonderful sponsors. Without button sales, though, important parts of the event might go missing. Button sales fund “everything from hay wagons, Santa, portapotties, street closures, security, marketing materials and additional event supplies and signage,” she added.

Christmas Stroll • December 5, 2015 3

“Provokethe stoke.”

This is how Master of Ceremonies Missy O’Malley describes her role in the 2015 Christmas Stroll. On Dec. 5, O’Malley, a local television and radio personality and DJ, will act as Santa’s personal assistant while helping create holiday cheer and excitement as he travels down Main Street. “Obviously Santa is the one who is really sought after for pictures, so maybe I get to be a bit of his body guard and personal assistant to keep the

f low going,” says the lively emcee. When Ellie Staley, program director of the Downtown Bozeman Association reached out to her, O’Malley wasn’t sure what to expect. “Boom. Ellie calls me. This is either good or bad. I’m either in trouble for something or there is something fun coming up,” recounts O’Malley with a smile. Her questions were quickly answered. Staley explained that her name had come up as a good candidate for the master of ceremonies position for the Stroll. “I almost dropped my phone. It’s just such a fun community deal.” O’Malley couldn’t be more excited for her role as Santa’s co-host. “It’s not even the fact that it is Christmas or the holidays, for me it’s celebrating winter. For Bozeman it’s knowing that it’s finally ski season. It’s that anticipation.” As a self-proclaimed “big little kid,” O’Malley looks forward to being a part of the traditions and memories for the children. “What I am most looking forward to is being a part of such an amazing institution of tradition and being a part of a kid’s memory.” O’Malley is also looking forward to showing off her costume, which she has been working on for a while. “Obviously I have been working on my outfit for quite some time…I love dressing up.” She is planning to put a “fun, funky twist” on Mrs. Claus. What some people may not know is that Missy O’Malley was born Missy Cashman and spent her younger years working at the Cashman nursery in Bismarck, North Dakota. She also spent some time selling Christmas trees for her uncle at the Bozeman Cashman Nursery when she first moved to town.

Being a Cashman helped Christmas time take on a new perspective for O’Malley. “Obviously being a Cashman, Christmas has always been huge for us because we sold Christmas trees. Also for me, knowing that tradition of Christmas has always been huge for my family.” O’Malley knows her background with the tradition of Christmas will translate well during her role as emcee of such a magical holiday event. The Christmas Stroll parade begins at 4:30 p.m. with the lighting of the tree on the north lawn of the Emerson Center. Then O’Malley, accompanied by the Bozeman Symphonic Choir, will lead the lighting ceremony down Main Street from Grand Avenue to Rouse Avenue.

As the founder of My Outdoor Alphabet, a local outdoor sports alphabet poster business, Neilson has always had a passion for incorporating the outdoors in his creative process. His business, which was started to pass on his love and knowledge of outdoor sports to his kids, played a key role in his Stroll poster design. Not only did having the proper tools and knowledge help Neilson create a well-designed poster, his love for the outdoors helped him tie in the Christmas season with the outdoorsy spirit of Bozeman. He thinks this passion for creating is what led him to the Christmas Stroll poster contest. “The whole idea of making things and putting them out into the world is just fun. It’s kind of addicting,” Neilson said. Being the Christmas Stroll poster contest winner is special to him. He always enjoys seeing his work in the community he is so connected to. “To be able to see a little bit of my work in the community we have chosen to be a part of, it feels really good.” Neilson is looking forward to meeting and signing his posters for fellow community members. He will be in the Emerson during the Christmas Stroll from 1-2 p.m.
