Summary:

Alice is very bored and sleepy while sitting with herolder sister outside, until she sees a White Rabbit lookingat his watch and talking to himself. She follows the Rabbitdown a very deep rabbit hole and ends up far beneath theground in a hall with a tiny locked door that leads to abeautiful garden. She eats and drinks things that make herchange in size, but she is still unable to get through thedoor into the garden.

When she becomes huge, she cries in frustration andwhen she shrinks, she is small enough to swim around in apool made of her own tears. In the pool, she encountersmany creatures, including a Mouse. The creatures andAlice manage to get out of the pool and dry off, but Alice issoon left alone.

Alice finds the Rabbit's house and grows huge afterdrinking a strange liquid. She terrifies the rabbit and hisneighbors and grows very small again after fanningherself. Alice then comes across a Caterpillar smoking ahookah. He irritates Alice and asks her to recite poetry, which she cannot do properly. The Caterpillar informs Alicethat eating one side of the mushroom he is sitting on willmake her larger but eating the other side will make hersmaller. Alice is still trying to become the right size to getinto the garden.

She comes to a house in the woods, where a Duchess, her ugly baby, her hostile Cook, and her Cheshire Catreside. The kitchen is full of pepper and dishes which werehurled in anger. Alice tries to save the baby from thisenvironment, but the baby soon turns into a pig, so she isforced to let it go. The Cheshire Cat appears, grins at Alice,

and recommends that she visit the Mad Hatter or theMarch Hare. The Cheshire Cat vanishes and reappearssuddenly. Finally, he disappears gradually so only his grinremains.

Alice goes to the March Hare's house, where she findsa tea-party going on. Alice sits down at the table with theHare, the Hatter, and the Dormouse. She finds them rudeand quickly becomes annoyed with them, so she leaves. She decides to go through a door in a tree and again findsherself in the room with the tiny doorleading to thegarden. This time she manages to get into the garden.

In the garden she comes across

three gardeners painting white roses red. They are afraidof being executed by the Queen of Hearts. Suddenly theQueen and her entourage of playing cards appear. TheQueen invites Alice to play croquet, and Alice joins a verystrange game. She soon learns that the Duchess is to beexecuted. The Cheshire Cat's head appears above theground and causes quite a stir.

The Duchess is brought from prison to settle mattersand begins talking with Alice about the moral of

everything. The Queen then decides Alice should go meetthe Mock Turtle; she is escorted by the Gryphon. Alicelearns the Mock Turtle's history and sees a dance calledthe Lobster Quadrille. Alice again tries to recite poetrywith little success.

The Gryphon whisks Alice back to court whenthey hear that the trial is beginning. The Knave of Hearts ison trial for stealing the Queen's tarts. Alice is excited to be

in court and to hear the testimony of the Hatter and theCook. Alice herself is called to testify after she hasinexplicably grown larger again. Alice is impertinent andthe King orders her to leave the court, but she refuses. Sheis outraged by the unfairness of the court's proceedingsand provokes the Queen to order her execution. Alice tells

the court that they're nothing but a pack of cards, and theyrise up and attack her.

At this point, Alice realizes that she has been asleepfor a long time in her sister's lap. She tells her sister about

the events of her marvelous dream and then goes in to tea.Her sister is captivated by the dream and imagines Alice asa grown woman who will still have a child-like sense of wonder.

Lesson Learned:

1. Decide where you want to be going

Do you know where you want to go in life? Personally,

I have an idea of where I want to be going, but not acertain, definite path. As the Cat says, if you don't knowexactly where you want to go, you could end up just aboutanywhere. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you dohave some sort of direction you want to be headed in, youshould probably start going that way rather than justtrying to get anywhere. Figure out what your path is andget on it! And remember: No one but you can point you inthe direction or path that is right for you. It's up to you to

find your path and start moving in the right direction. Iknow this all too well in terms of my own life. No one, nomatter how hard some tried, was ever able to convince meto drop my negative attitude -- except me. I was the onlyone who was able to turn my life around and make it whatI wanted it to be. It hasn't been easy and I've certainlyhad some help from the amazing people in my life, but it

Page 5: Book Report Leanne

was ultimately up to me to get on the right path -- andstay there. If you don't know what your path is, give itsome serious thought. If you are already on the best pathfor you, keep moving!

2. Stop doing things that get you nowhere

What do you do that keeps you in the same place? Doyou want your life to change but you keep doing the samethings over and over again? I know his happens to me.Like many people, I find myself complaining about thingsthat I chose to do. I will make choices and then I will beunhappy with them afterward. Listen to the Queen.

The Queen is right. Sometimes -- okay, often -- it feelseasier to keep doing what you've been doing because it'scomfortable. We can get so set in our ways, inrationalizing our behavior to make it seem okay, but we'reactually making things a lot harder on ourselves. Justthink about your life for a minute. Are you doing thingsthat are making it harder on you? Are you staying insituations that make you unhappy because it seems easierthan getting out of them? Are you putting yourself in

positions where you have to compromise yourself becauseit seems easier? Think about how much time and effortand mental energy that takes just to stay where you are,to keep doing what you're doing. It seems like it would behard to leave or change, but, really, it's harder to stay thesame. Remember what the Queen said and remember this:don't ever, ever settle for less than what you deserve inlife.

3. Believe in what seems impossible

How many of us are like Alice, so certain that something isimpossible that we don't even give it a try? People whosucceed in life do so because they try and because theyhave a good attitude. They make an effort. They do, rather

Page 6: Book Report Leanne

than just thinking about doing. This is hard though. Trustme, I know. I want to be a writer. I want to write novelsthat people love and relate to. While I've drafted somearticles and even written a novel (that I've shared with no

one), have I really done anything to pursue my dream? Notreally. In fact, I often sit back and say to myself, "Oh, thatprobably won't happen so I guess I'll just stay where Iam." I think to myself, "I'm doing some writing so it'sfine." Nope. This is not fine. Or, rather, it is fine, but "fine"is not what makes dreams into realities. Fine is not whatmakes my novel suddenly appear on bookshelveseverywhere. No, I have to do more than fine. I have tobelieve that things that might seem

impossible arepossible. No matter what your dreams are,no matter what you envision for your life, you can make ithappen. It won't always come easily, but you havetobelieve.

4. Figure out who you are

Who are you? Ah, the great and mind-boggling question.Do you really know who you are? I'm not sure anyone

really 100% knows who they are (or even really will), butI do believe that some of us have a better idea thanothers. Why? Because some people actually want to knowwho they are. If you're reading this blog (and weren'talready turned off by the crazy Alice inWonderland nonsense I'm spewing here), you're mostlikely a thinker, a soul-searcher. You want to know whoyou are which puts you a HUGE step ahead of most people, people who just move through life not knowing and not

caring who they are. Your life will always be changing andnew experiences will happen to you all the time. Like Alice, you might find your world turned upside down one day. Asunsettling as life can sometimes be, if you know who youare, you have a foundation on which to always rest. Youcan be certain in one thing: yourself. Keep exploring

Page 7: Book Report Leanne

yourself and trying to learn more about you becauseeverything you learn about yourself can help you in life.Knowing who you are will keep you sane and help you tograpple with whatever curve balls life throws at you.

5. Communicate carefully with others

Is saying what you mean and meaning what you say thesame thing? I'm pretty sure it's not. You should thinkabout this: Do you really say what you mean? Do youreally mean what you say? Communication, for me, istough. I don't always say what I mean either because I am

afraid to or because I'm not sure exactly what I mean. Ispend a lot of time thinking, but not all that much timethinking before I speak. Not surprisingly, my lackingcommunication abilities often lead to confusion andproblems. I've learned (and am still learning more andmore every day) that it's much better to take some time tofigure out what you mean rather than saying things thatmay be the opposite of, or not even related to, what youmean to say. And, on the other hand, it's important to

mean what you say. When you tell someone something, mean it. Don't just speak to speak. It can be hard tocommunicate with others. In some ways, we're all in ourown little worlds and what makes sense to us doesn'talways make sense to others. However, I've found that if you take the time to really think about what you want tosay and if you really mean the words that come out of yourmouth, things in life go a lot more smoothly.
