Body ParagraphsNet Neutrality is a controversial topic and a topic that not that many people understand. The article FCC Chair Proposes Strong Net Neutrality rules discusses the concept of Net Neutrality and keeping the internet equal. The article states Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the internet equally, not discriminating or charging differently by user, content, site, platform, type of attached equipment, among others (1). In the quote, Net Neutrality is seen as a policy to keep the internet equal for everybody. Net Neutrality is keeping internet providers and governments from charging people more money or from limiting people from different sites. Tom Wheeler, chairmen of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, stated The Internet must be fast, fair, and open (1). Wheeler wants the internet to be without limitations, reasonable, and fast for everybody no matter the internet provider. The Internet should be equal and fair to everybody without internet providers charging more money and restricting them from other sites.Net Neutrality has actually been around for some time but has been discussed more since then. The only reason it is brought up now is because the internet is being treated more as a utility and the FCC wants to propose new blueprints and with these comes questions. In the article 4 Major Questions in The Net Neutrality Debate, Brian Hughes explains what questions are being asked about Net neutrality. Hughes states When FCC Chairmen Tom Wheeler last week announced a blueprint mirroring President Obamas call for net neutrality, it prompted new queries over the White Houses role in the process, consumer rights, the future of the Internet service providers and perhaps most importantly, the ensuing battle in the courts (1). These are just some of the important questions people are asking and want answers to those questions. In the article, Hughes also discuses a question some Republicans are asking if it is too burdensome. Hughes states Conservatives believe that expanding the governments handling of the Internet will only stifle growth (2). Republicans are also in favor for Net Neutrality but debate that such matter should be addressed over legislation and are questioning if the internet should be regulated like a public utility. Saying Net Neutrality is already a query on its own and knowing what it is has people questioning how it should be handled.
