FROM THE ASSISTANT RABBI’S DESKMy studies for Shavuos this year began when Rabbi Broide came running frantically in to my office one day. Out of breath and with sweat building on his forehead, he told me that he had just come back from a lunch meeting with an old friend who had been through 14 years of Jewish day school education and has tragically decided to renounce his Judaism and become a Christian. When Rabbi Broide began debating the virtues of remaining Jewish, his friend and former classmate whipped out a Tanach and opened up to the book of Yeshayahu the prophet. His friend argued that there are 15 verses tucked away towards the end of the book which prove that even the Old Testament describes Jesus as the Messiah. As Rabbi Broide sat next to me in my office, we opened up a Tanach together only to realize that to the untrained and uneducated eye, his friend appears correct.

As a result, over Shavuos this year, I gave a class about these very same 15 pasukim. These verses, in a sense, are the epicenter of the battle between Jews and Christian missionaries. Yeshayahu 52:13 – 53 tells us about the suffering servant of God who will rise up triumphantly at the end of days while all of his previous adversaries watch in astonishment. Those adversaries will finally realize that the suffering servant wasn’t punished because of his own sins, but rather to bear the sins of the nations of the world. His suffering, in effect, was all part of the Divine plan to bring about the ultimate redemption.

Christian Missionaries love to misconstrue these 15 verses and use them to prove that Tanach, the Jewish Old Testament itself, proves Jesus’ existence. To them, the suffering servant is none other than Jesus who suffered a degrading life in order to expiate the sins of others. In fact, in Acts 8, a book of the New Testament, the story is told of Philip and an Ethiopian eunuch, who upon hearing this misconstrued reading of the text, decides to baptize himself right there on the spot. Additionally, during the famous Barcelona Disputation of 1263, Pablo Christiani challenges Ramban with these versus as a further proof of Christianity.

For Jews, however, this representation of the text could not be further from the truth. The suffering servant is not one person, but in fact represents the entire Jewish people. Rashi and other commentators point out that often times, the word avdi, my servant, refers not just to one person, but the Jewish people as a whole. Additionally, read in the context of the rest of Yeshayahu, it’s clear that these pasukim are one of four servant songs, all speaking about the Jewish people and describing the climactic time when Mashiach arrives and the Jews assume the role as leaders in humanity. We understand these 15 verses to mean that when Mashiach does arrive, the nations of the world, who have so often been our adversaries and looked at our exiled status as an indication of God’s rejection of His people, will finally realize that God never abandoned His people, and that His people were the chosen people all along. In fact, Gerald Sigal, a member of our shul, is known internationally for his efforts to counter the work of the missionaries, and I strongly recommend that everyone read his book on this topic, Isaiah 53: Who is the Servant?.

The Mishnah in Pirkei Avos tells us Dah Mah Shetasheiv L’apikores, know what to say when confronted with heresy. Even a simple search on the internet will make you realize just how organized and passionate these missionary groups are and how they will stop at nothing to convince just one more vulnerable Jew. The Talmud tells us “He who saves one Jewish life is considered as if he had saved an entire world.” This obligation is not only speaking about our obligation to save someone’s physical life, but also about our obligation to save someone’s religious, spiritual life. Our efforts to counter these missionaries and cults have to be no less passionate and vigilant to engage, educate, and train our community about their efforts and how to withstand their deceptive efforts.

Shabbat Shalom,

“The Epicenter

Of The Battle Between Jews And Christian

HALACHIC QUESTION OF THE WEEKQ: Is it ok to travel by plane during the nine days? What about on Tisha B’av itself?

A: Yes, it is permissible both during the nine day and on Tisha B’av itself given the safety of airplane travel. The nature of the purpose of the travel should be consistent with the mournful spirit of the time.

Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Goldberg at [email protected]

NASOThe Duties of the Levite Families. The tasks to be performed by the sons of Gershon, Kehoss, and Merari were given. A census revealed 8,580 such individuals between the ages of 30-50 ready for service.

Purification of the Camps. Impure Jews were to be sent out from the three camps (i.e., the innermost camp containing the Shechina; the middle camp of the Levi’im; and the outermost camp of the Israelites). According to the person’s level of impurity, he was required to leave some or all of the camps.

Wrongfully keeping another’s property. If one confessed to wrongfully keeping another’s property, he must add 20% to the original amount, and bring a guilt offering to Hashem as atonement for his sin. If the original owner died without heirs, repayment was made to the Kohein.

Sotah. A wife suspected of adultery for good reason was brought to the Kohein. If she confessed, the marriage ended in divorce. If not, she underwent the Sotah process in which, after being warned, she drank “bitter waters” (i.e., a mixture of holy water from the laver and dust from the Mishkan floor). She then had to swear to the Kohein that, if she was guilty, she would suffer harmful effects after drinking the waters. The words of the oath were written on a scroll and were blotted out in the water, which she then drank. If she was guilty, the physical deformities that resulted bore witness to her faithlessness, and she was accursed among her people and died. If she was innocent, no injuries resulted and she was promised the blessing of motherhood. (Two Notes: [a] if she died, her illicit lover also died; and [b] the Sotah process only worked if the husband was himself free from sin.)

The Nazir. A “Nazir” (one who voluntarily took an oath to become completely consecrated to the service of Hashem for a given period of time) was obliged to abstain from wine and strong drink made from grapes, cutting his hair, and having contact with a dead body.

The Priestly Blessing. The Kohanim were instructed to bless the people.

The Mishkan. The Mishkan (Tabernacle) had been erected and dedicated on the first of Nisan in the second year after the Exodus. The leaders of the twelve Tribes jointly presented a gift of six wagons and twelve oxen for transport of the Mishkan and its contents. Each of these leaders then brought identical gold and silver vessels, sacrificial animals, and meal offerings on twelve successive days of dedication.

PARSHA Q & APARSHAT NASOQuestions1. What is the significance of the number 8,580 in this week’s Parsha?2. Besides transporting the Mishkan, what other service performed by the Levi’im is referred to in this

Parsha?3. Name the three camps in the desert.4. Who determines which Kohen receives the gifts that must be given to the Kohanim?5. What does the Torah promise a person who gives Matnot Kehuna?6. What are Chartzanim? What are Zagim?7. What sin does a Nazir commit against himself?8. Where was the cut hair of a Nazir placed?9. What is the meaning of the blessing “May G-d bless you and guard you?”10. What is the meaning of the blessing “May G-d lift up His countenance upon you?”

BRS OUTREACH REVOLUTIONIt’s not just a wedding this Sunday…Traditionally, June has always been the most popular month for couples to get married. This Sunday, I have the privilege of marrying two very special Boca Raton Jewish Experience (BRJE) participants. This is a great story how one of our members gave me the phone number of a Jewish co-worker who expressed an interest in Judaism. After getting in touch with her, she decided to enroll in our Basic Judaism classes along with her boy friend. Not only did they take all of the Basic Judaism classes, but then began to learn with one of our members in our

Partners in Torah program. They have been studying together ever since and all become great friends. Besides the formal programs, David joined our BRJE football team at this year’s Hodu Bowl and they both participated in a number of other fun programs. We have also been studying together and learned all about the exciting traditions and laws of a Jewish wedding and marriage. Let’s hope that following the wedding they will continue on their Jewish Journey not as individuals but as a single unit that will be part of the amazing Jewish future. Keep up with the referrals; you are all doing a great job!!

Inspire yourself to inspire others…Josh

MITZVAH OF THE WEEKThe Kohein’s Clothes. Hashem commanded the Kohanim to wear special clothes that were stunning and beautiful. Hashem designed the Beit Hamikdash to be a special place where people would be stunned by the glory of the place. When people are stunned they understand that they are standing before Hashem.

RABBI JOSH BROIDERabbi Josh Broide, Director of the Boca Raton Jewish Experience and the Outreach Rabbi of Boca Raton Synagogue, is about to begin his 13th year at BRS, but there are some facts that you might not know about him and his family.

Josh was born in 1974 and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. After his family moved to the United States in the mid 80’s, he attended the famed JEC in Elizabeth, New Jersey. 6th grade was a big year for him, not only because he was the oldest and tallest in his class at that time, but that was when Josh met Simone. It’s an amazing story and you’ll have to ask Josh for more of the exciting details. He attended Camp Moshava, Camp Mesorah, and Camp Hillel, and was very involved in NCSY. In high school, Josh served as the Student Government president and played hockey for the famous JEC Lancers. After graduation he spent two years in Israel at Ner Yaakov and Toras Moshe. It was in Israel that Josh decided to change his career from becoming a lawyer and instead become a Rabbi, because of the inspirational Rabbis he had met in Israel. Rabbi Broide received his Rabbinical Ordination and earned a Masters in Advanced Talmudic Law from the Ner Israel Rabbinical College. During his five years in the Yeshiva, he had the privilege of studying with Rabbi Yissocher Frand for four years. He also earned two Masters Degrees from Johns Hopkins University, the first in Special Education and the second in School Administration and Supervision.

Currently, Josh serves as the Founder and Director of the Boca Raton Jewish Experience, a new outreach and engagement program in Boca Raton, and also serves as the Outreach Rabbi at Boca Raton Synagogue. He has worked at BRS for the past 12 years and has also served as the Shul’s Executive Director and Youth Director. Before launching the BRJE, he served as the Director of JSU South Florida. He regularly attends the March of the Living and NCSY’s The Jerusalem Journey in Israel. He is the recipient of the prestigious Grinspoon/Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education and was a semi finalist in the Jewish Federations of North America’s Jewish Hero’s contest. He is the host of Jewish Pride Radio and the co-producer of Jewish Pride Films. He loves rock music, and plays the drums and guitar. Josh and his amazing wife, Simone, have five children, Ayala, Avigayil. Eliana, Asher Yosef & Ahuva Leah, live in Lago Del Mar, just three doors down from his mother, Sylvia who moved to Boca two years ago. He loves the community and has a passion for inspiring Jews around the world.

ENHANCED GOLD

Three years ago, Boca Raton Synagogue  launched the Pillar Society for those members that wish to help our synagogue continue to offer the highest possible level of educational, religious, and social programming to our community.  This year we have added a Silver level for members ages 36 and under.

We are fortunate in our community to have a number of members who give above and beyond, year after year.  We thank you for your past generosity and appeal to you and others to become members of Pillar Society – to be the leaders of Torah,  Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim in our community.

Pillar Society provides a backbone to our community, and your commitment enables the Shul to provide for the needs of all our members, regardless of ability to pay. May you and your family be truly blessed in the coming year.

MAJDI HALABI

SOCIAL ACTIONThis summer, the London Olympics will mark the 40th anniversary of the slaughter of the Munich 11. The International Olympic Committee has never acknowledged this terrible massacre despite repeated requests from surviving family members for a moment of silence in their memory. A New York area JCC has established a petition to ask the IOC

for a moment of silence at the London Olympics to remember the eleven Israeli athletes who were murdered at the Munich Olympics forty years ago. Many regard this massacre as the beginning of modern terrorism. The goal is to collect one million signatures. Please take a moment to go to the link below, sign the petition, and forward it to as many people as you can. https://www.change.org/petitions/jacques-rogge-minute-of-silence-at-the-2012-london-olympics

DO YOU KNOW…. Raz Benzikry?

Group: JUCO Boys Group leader since: 2012 School: 10th grader WYHS What Raz loves about being a group leader is being with the kids every Shabbat seeing them doven. Also, playing some games with them, it’s just fascinating to see their excitement every week coming to groups and really seeing them grow as children.

Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski Shavuot Teen Rabbis and directors dread Shavuot. There is nothing meaningful or enjoyable about planning an evening full of attracting teens to Shiurim, trying to get them to stay in Shiurim, and trying to make sure they don’t cause any trouble. What Seder night is to mothers, Shavuot night is to Teen Rabbis. Yet this past Shavuot night was something special. Our BRS teens chose their topics, and various Rabbis from the community taught them. Shiurim averaged 30-80 participants, who were challenged by topics such as Torah and Civil Rights, intermarriage and demons, true Kabbalah, life after death, and the beauty of Shabbat. Thank you to Rabbis Grajower, Goldberg, Zak, and Broide. As good as the teen programming was, the stars of the night shown out of the spotlight. Rabbi Gur Berman gave a Shiur to his old students and WYHS Rabbiem answered their students’ questions on a variety of subjects. Students studied independently for finals and about topics and books that interested them. The Feldan clan and friends studied the Mishnayot they needed to finish for BRS’s Siyum. Most impressive was Rabbi Yaakov Green, who held court at the front of the Beit Medrash for his students and community teens for over four hours!!! I think I’ll propose another Chag – this one to celebrate our teens’ great Torah study on Shavuot night.
