According to the Carbon Free Boston 2050 Report, 85 percent of projected building square footage in Boston in 2050 already exists today. In order to achieve carbon neutrality, nearly all of the existing buildings in the city will need to undergo deep energy retrofits that are designed and implemented with a “whole building” approach.
The BSA and collaborators, including Boston’s Green Ribbon Commission, are developing a multifaceted policy and advocacy agenda to move the City of Boston towards a carbon free future.

Knowledge leadership (case studies) BSA and AIA MA have divergent agendas Policy shifts take time
New collaborators for other initiativesSynthesizing other impact areas (housing) New audiences
Opportunities Further align with partner orgs like MCAN and BE+ as well as university partners to build on case studies and use them to advocate for net zero building code
Lessons Takes a lot of time, partnership and resources to work on advocacy issues. There are also some great ways to connect issues of equity, climate, community and advancing architecture that are embodied in this work.
June - August 2020 (live)Current (on-demand via AIAU)BostonCarbon Leadership Forum (KnoCo)EC101 Advisory Group
Buildings contribute about 40% of the world’s carbon emissions, and embodied carbon is a big slice of the pie. Embodied Carbon 101 is designed to help AEC professionals understand embodied carbon and immediately apply that knowledge to projects to reduce emissions and get to zero carbon. Unlike operational carbon, which can be reduced during a building’s lifetime, embodied carbon is “locked in” as soon as a building is completed. Over 12 courses, participants learn how to measure, manage, and implement practical solutions from expert practitioners including architects and sustainable building product manufacturers.

2018- PresentBostonBSA BoardEDI Task ForceEDI Knowledge CommunityYW Boston
In 2018, a BSA Board Task Force developed a report addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion and opposing harassment in the profession and the BSA organization. Today, we are prioritizing and updating actionable strategies. The first step is to listen to and collaborate with those within the profession and our communities affected by the injustices and inequities of racism.
We have engaged with YW Boston who offered its Stand Against Racism training for the Boards and staff.

This on-going research investigates the role of design and designers in the geographies of care surrounding Mass Ave and Melnea Cass.
Narratives about place indicate how public discourses shape the character of problems and set the frameworks for policy, planning, and design decisions. To understand the intersections of housing insecurity, substance use disorder, public health and community well-being it is imperative to consider how social problems are constructed.
