1. ATTEND A CONCERT PERFORMANCE.

It can be of a Salvation Army band, high school/ college/professional band, orchestra, wind ensemble or string quartet, or any instrumental chamber group.

2. ATTEND A SALVATION ARMY MUSIC CAMP OR YOUR SCHOOL’S BAND CAMP.

Participate in a musical ensemble throughout the encampment. Show photos of yourself in performance or share some of your music camp experiences with your troop.

Read Psalm 27:4-6 (NASB).

• Circle the words that show the writer is in trouble.

• Underline the “one thing” the writer asks from the Lord while he is going through the trouble. (Hint: there are different parts to the “one thing”.)

• Find out how sure the writer is that God will take care of the situation.

• Make boxes around all of the things the writer says GOD will do.

• Highlight the words that tell what the writer will do in return.

1. WHEN YOU FIRST BEGIN PLAYING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, IT IS EASY TO OVERDO IT AND HURT YOURSELF.

Find out about injuries that are common to musicians playing your instrument and how to avoid them. Ask a music teacher for tips or go online and check out http://musiced.about.com/ od/beginnersguide/a/injuries.htm to learn more.

2. STUDIES SHOW THAT PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT OR LISTENING TO MUSIC CAN CHANGE YOUR HEART RATE.

For example, if you are feeling down, playing upbeat music can make your heart beat faster. Soothing music, such as classical music, slows your heart rate and can help you calm down.

Soul QuestComplete the following task.

“One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:

That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord And to meditate in His temple.

For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me;He will lift me up on a rock.

And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy,I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.”

Additional Resources

What does this Scripture mean to you?

Do you believe God is in charge of your life, even when things are going badly?

Should knowing this affect the way you use your music as a means for praise?

1. MAKE A SIMPLE PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT.

The children’s section of the public library usually has books about making rhythm instruments. Arrange to give the instrument to one of the Sunday school classes for young children. Show the children how to use the instrument and let them play it while singing or listening to a recording. If more than one girl guard is working on this task at the same time, work together to make several instruments to give to the children.

2. SHARE YOUR TALENT.

Accompany a group, soloist or congregation on your instrument. Prepare, practice with the soloist or group, and perform in a public meeting.

3. PERFORM AT A NURSING HOME, WOMEN’S MINISTRIES’ OR SENIORS’ PROGRAM.

If you enjoyed this activity, find out how to put it to work. Talk to your school counselor about career opportunities that would allow you to use your new skills. What can you do now to help you prepare for a related job in the future?

Here are several careers related to this emblem. There are many others.

• Musician

• Music Teacher

• Divisional or Territorial Music Director

If you are working on the Catherine Booth Award, take photos to share with the Review Committee.

1. RESEARCH SEVERAL SALVATION ARMY BAND RECORDINGS AND PLAN A BAND PROGRAM.

Choose one march, one selection, one solo item and describe each. For one song in each piece you have selected, find the words in The Song Book of The Salvation Army and the music in The Salvation Army Tune Book.

Describe what makes the music exciting, soothing, happy, or sad.

In what type of service would these pieces best be included?

Then plan a hypothetical Salvation Army band festival program. Use the music researched from the recordings. Pretend you have the International Staff Band at your fingertips!

Include the following items in your program outline:

• Welcome

• Prayer

• Scripture

• Congregational song

• Devotions and devotional music selection

• Benediction

If you need help getting your program organized and balanced, talk to your bandmaster or music leader. Review your completed program outline with your leader.

2. ENROLL IN A CORPS OR SCHOOL BAND OR ORCHESTRA ENSEMBLE.

Attend for one quarter/semester. Show your leader your report card or a summary note from the instructor.

3. CONDUCT THE BAND OR ORCHESTRA FOR ONE SELECTION.

Knowing how to conduct a musical number is a very special skill. There is more to it than just waving your arms! The goal of this project is for you to conduct an instrumental group in a march or selection.

Ask your corps bandmaster or school band or orchestra director to teach you how to conduct. It will take several hours of instruction to learn the basics.
