THE University of the FreeState (UFS) is delighted withthe naming of Rolene Strauss,a fourth­year medical student,as Miss World 2014.Rolene was crowned as

Miss World 2014 in London,England, on Sunday evening.The last time a South

African was crowned MissWorld was in 1974 whenAnneline Kriel walked awaywith the title. Before her,Penny Coelen was crownedMiss World in 1958.“Rolene represents the best

of South Africa – a deepcommitment to education anda profound compassion forhuman beings.“Since the first day I met

her as a new first­yearmedical student, I was awareof somebody special, a youngwoman from a rural area whocarried herself with so muchgrace and confidence.“She is truly without

prejudice towards any humanbeing and this has made herone of my allies in buildingthe Human Project of theUniversity of the Free State,”says Prof. Jonathan Jansen,vice­chancellor and rector ofthe UFS.“I was not at all surprised

that she chose as herbeauty­with­a­purpose projectthe task of keeping younggirls in school; this is who sheis, and if you observe her

’n FILMSKOOL wat nagraadsekursusse aanbied, open in Januarieaan die Universiteit van dieVrystaat (UV). Dié opwindendeuitbreiding is die gevolg vanverskeie dosente en departementese samewerking.Nico Luwes, hoof van drama­ en

teaterkuns aan die UV en diegroot dryfkrag agter die filmskool,sê die skool bied ’n besondersehonneurs­ en meestersgraadpro­gram in film en visuele media.Volgens hom is dit die enigste

kursus in Suid­Afrika wat nie net

op die praktiese deel van filmkunsfokus nie, maar die praktyk in dieteorie grond.Dié allesomvattende kursus sluit

voor­ en na­produksiewerk asooktoneelspel spesifiek vir die kamera,in.In visuele media sal die maak

van dokumentêre, nuus­insetsels,rolprente en dies meer op heden­daagse platforms behandel word.Die kursus begin volgende jaar

met 15 honneursstudente, diemaksimum wat aanvaar word, ensal in 2016 die eerste meesters­graadstudente inneem.Enige student met ’n toepaslike

BA­graad en ’n gemiddeld vanminstens 65% kan om die hon­neurskursus aansoek doen.Die leerplan is met die same­

werking van dosente van verskeiedepartemente aan die UV ontwik­kel, asook insette wat van diefilmskool by die Universiteit vanGroningen in Nederland bekom is.Prof. Suzanne Human, hoof van

’n BLINKNUWE hospitaal is deurdie departement van openbarewerke in opdrag van die departe­ment van gesondheid in Tromps­burg opgerig.Hoewel dit etlike maande

gelede reeds in bedryf moeswees, is geen pasiënt nog hierversorg nie. Ook ’n moderne

toerismesentrum wat langs diehospitaal opgerig is, staan inonbruik.Vir die lesers van Bloemnaweek

is dit ’n jammerte, want in dieSuid­Vrystaat is geen hospitaalnie. Die eerste een langs die N1is eers in Colesberg.Die Trompsburgse hospitaal kan

dus van groot belang wees omonder andere slagoffers wat in ’n

motorongeluk was, eers testabiliseer voordat hulle naBloemfontein gehaas word.Maar dié somervakansie sal dit

egter nog nie kan gebeur nie,want die hospitaal is nog toe.Die Vrystaatse departement van

gesondheid sukkel om die nodigemediese personeellede – veraldokters – vir die nuwe Tromps­burg­distrikhospitaal vir die distrik

Gariep te werf.Die departement sukkel boonop

met ’n erge geldtekort. In anderstaatshospitale kan pasiënte niegeopereer word nie, die kos isskaars en skoon lakens enmedisyne is nie altyd beskikbaarnie.Bouwerk aan die hospitaal van

pre­agreement statement andquotation when applying for credit.This will enable them to shoparound and do a comparison.”The NCR urges consumers to seek

loans with NCR­registered creditproviders. They can identify suchcredit providers by a window decal(an orange sticker with an NCRlogo) and a registration certificatethat will also state the NCR creditprovider registration number.To ensure that you are not put in

a predicament of having to applyfor credit come the new year, spendwisely this year by following thesesimple steps:S Do a budget for the festiveseason and include all debt, rent,electricity, water, insurance, trans­port, gifts, entertainment, etc.

Bach se Johannespassie,Vivaldi se Vier Seisoene en’n Kerskonsert lewer.Vir die koperblaas­en­

semble is ’n Big Band­uit­voering vir Valentynsdagbeplan, ’n uitvoering vandie Britse komponis JohnRutter se musiek en ’n jazz­en blues­fees.Die stadsjeugorkes sal

vier keer optree, waarvantwee uitvoerings metbesoekende jeugorkeste.

Ou Presidensie-konserte

’n Nuwe toevoeging totdie BSO­bestuur se take isdie aanbied van die OuPresidensie­konserte. DerekOchse, wat die konsertreek­se die afgelope sowat 30jaar gereël het, het dieleisels aan die BSOoorgegee. Om dit virmusiekliefhebbers maklik temaak sal die konserte dieeerste Sondag van elkemaand gehou word.Buitelandse en plaaslikemusici, van studente totprofessionele musici, sal in

dié spesiale konsertsaaloptree.Barok­kantates, die

Odeion­strykkwartet, ’nklavieruitvoering deur Myer,’n perkussie­ensemble, dieBloemfontein­koperblaas­en­semble en jazz­sang salonder meer volgende jaarhier gehoor word.

Die uitbreiding van dieBSO­model na die res vandie land is ook deel vandie bestuur se beplanning.Die begin is reeds inStellenbosch gemaak waardie eerste konsert inJanuarie gehou word.Paul Loeb van Zuilen­

burg, die BSO se vastedirigent, sal die orkesdirigeer. Die model behels’n orkes wat uit amateur­,studente­ en professionelemusici bestaan. Die orkesis gestig met ’n bepaaldedoel: om aan amateurmus­ici wat gevorderde oplei­ding gekry het, ’n verhoogte bied. Professionelemusici word betrek omleiding te gee en ’naanvaarbare uitvoeringspeilte verseker. Studente­musicikry waardevolle optreege­leenthede.Die model bepaal ook

dat amateurmusici ’nbedrag per konsert betaal– hulle betaal dus om tespeel. Dié geld dra tot dievergoeding van professione­le musici by, terwyl diestudente nie betaal nie enook nie betaal word nie.Möller sê die BSO­be­

stuur is tevrede met dieBSO se bydrae tot dieRosestad se musieklewe dieafgelope drie jaar. Sowat5 000 mense het vanjaardie Best of Broadway­,Space Odyssey en ArmedMan­produksies bygewoon.

oggend met haar 100steverjaardag voortgegaan.Sy het tot ses maande gelede

nog op haar eie in die Fichardt­park­aftreeoord gebly, maar isnou in die siekeboeg. Tot op 96jaar het sy in haar eie woonstelgebly waar sy ’n groot liefde virkoekies­ en broodbak gehad het.Sy spog met ’n bekende

persoon in haar familiekring.Gertie se neef was die teater­ghoeroe André Huguenet, wie seregte naam Gert Borstlap was.Haar nooiensvan was Borstlap.Haar kinders beskryf haar as

stilte in die huis neergedaal,”onthou haar oudste seun, Jan.Volgens haar een kleinseun,
