The best part is that the work that students and teachers havebeen focussing on for the past couple of years has provided asuperb foundation for writing. Joel Batson will be keeping youall abreast of the strategic planning for Writing to what you willsee in classrooms daily and also how you can help.

For 5 days per fortnight two of our best teachers will be takingon the role of Coach – Jackie Goss in the prep–year 2 sectorand Tammy Kelly for the years 3–6. Julie Lowry is filling in forJackie Goss in the coaching role, adding to her STL&N andMaster Teacher role, until Jackie’s return. Every teacher willengage with current research and practice through professionaldevelopment led by Joel Batson, Tammy Kelly, Jackie Gossand Julie Lowry. This knowledge will then be applied in theclassroom context and supported by year level colleagues, coaches and the school’s Curriculum Council. Parentinformation sessions and workshops, U Tube presentationsand students writing samples will all be ways for parents to alsoengage and support their children’s improvement.

Caring for all of our friends: Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction. It occurswhen a person is exposed to an allergen to which they aresensitive. Signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis can includedifficulty breathing, swelling of the throat and tongue and evenloss of consciousness.

We’d like to share with you, our school community of parentsand friends, this important information for a number of reasons.Anaphylaxis is a very real and ongoing concern for all schoolsdue to the number of children who do have severe allergicreactions to some common foods and substances. Here atBli Bli State School, we have students with severe allergicreactions to eggs and nuts. This includes peanuts, cashews, pistachios and all foods that contain these nuts, such as peanutbutter.

Whilst it is almost impossible to be a “nut-free” school, we areasking for your support and attention in ensuring our school is“nut-sensitive”. Here at Bli Bli State School, we do everythingwe can to ensure that children do not share their food witheach other due to possible food sensitivities in any child. Weclosely monitor eating times, we remind our children to only eattheir own food and we encourage our children to wash theirhands around every meal. Despite all of this, a child sensitive

2

Page 3: Bli Bli State School eNewsletter...2018/02/02  · businesses accepting customer credit card payments, including government departments. • If the department fails to comply with

to certain substances may be exposed through typical day today activities. As an example, a child who has a nut allergycan experience a severe reaction if they drink from a water tapafter a child who has eaten peanuts at lunch. Passing a waterbottle between two children, where one has eaten nuts usingtheir fingers and the other has a sensitivity to this, may causea severe reaction. Please understand, we do not share thisinformation with you to elicit anxiety. We are a close communityhere at Bli Bli State School and we take care of each other.

We ask that you pack your child’s lunch box with understandingand patience for the needs of our friends. As the parents ofa child with anaphylaxis will explain, they work tirelessly toeducate their child to self-manage their allergies. These childrenare taught to monitor their reactions, to be careful around whatthey eat and touch, and to be aware of their body’s needs. Wecan still help our friends by being sensitive to what is packedand sent to school in lunchboxes. We ask for your supportregarding this.

If you have any questions, or require any more information, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 5458 2111 orvisit one of the following websites:

We sincerely thank you for your support and attention to this.

Caring for all of our friends: Immunosuppression

Immunosuppression is a reduction of the activation or efficacyof the immune system. There are a number of children withinour community who are immunosuppressed, meaning thesechildren have a lower immunity and cannot fight infections in thenormal way.

Viruses that cause measles, chickenpox and shingles couldmake these children extremely unwell. I would therefore begrateful if you contact the Office immediately if your child isfound to have one of these illnesses. If we knew there hadbeen exposure to measles, chickenpox or shingles, medicinecan be given to lessen the side effect of such an infection tothese children. This medicine does need to be given as soon aspossible after the contact has taken place.

We must assure you that your child is not at any risk becauseof these children.

Kids Club

Every term, Bli Bli State School run Kids Clubs during playtimes. A range of our teaching staff coordinate and run theseclubs that are designed to appeal to a range of children withdifferent interest and abilities. These clubs typically changefocus every term, except where children’s interest levels showsa need to continue.

Each club is targeted at a specific age group and childrencan self-nominate by seeing their teacher for a special “KidsClub pass”. Children typically self-nominate because they areinterested in the focus and / or feel like a break from theplayground. Some children may be encouraged to attend asKids Club provides a more structured alternative to theplayground.

In thetwenty years I have spent at Chancellor, I played a variety ofleadership roles as well as spending several years out at othercoastal schools.

Bli Bli State School has a terrific reputation in the communityand I am so very pleased to be now permanently appointedhere.

I trust that you will find me a positive and friendly presence inour school as well as being passionate about doing my best foryou and your children.

My role within the school will give me the chance to workprimarily with students and teachers from Prep to Year Two. Iwould like to thank teachers for all their dedication and effort inensuring a smooth start to the year. It has been an awesomestart to what promises to be another busy and exciting year.

In these first weeks of being here, I have met or have beengreeted by many welcoming parents for which I am verygrateful. When you see me, please come up and say gidday.

HEAD OF CURRICULUM

Classrooms are Buzzing

This term is off to a flying start already and I’m extremely proudof all our students for making a tremendous effort to get backinto the swing of things at school. The quality of learning that’shappening so far is setting the scene beautifully for the rest ofthe year.

The Oral Language Approach to Writing

Over the past 18 months, we have been implementing anapproach to learning aims to increase meaningful oral languagedevelopment in all students from Prep to Year 6. This approachfocuses on three main areas which are: Pronouncing wordsclearly in their parts to help with spelling; Encouraging studentsto speak in full sentences to improve reading, understandingand writing sentences; Exploring topics and words bydeveloping vocabulary. In addition, classes also participate inbrief ‘snippet lessons’ each fortnight which target a particulararea of language development. After studying the results ofour students’ writing last year, we observed an increase insentence and word lengths and also an increase in the numberof more precise words used. This was a great result and we willcontinue to analyse our students’ writing in this way to improveour practice further.

From this year onwards, our explicit improvement agenda willbe an oral language approach to writing. This agenda willagain be implemented across the school and there will be a keyteam tasked with driving this approach forward for the next 3years. So far this year, we have dedicated 1 whole student freeday to learning about exemplary practices in the teaching ofwriting. One of the key features of successful writing programsis the link to quality discussion and oral language development. As such, we are perfectly positioned to make a sizeable impacton our students writing skills by continuing to focus on orallanguage. I look forward to sharing more with you about ourwriting agenda as the year progresses.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

Our Dress Code

Bli Bli State School is a ‘full uniform worn with pride’ school, and as such all students are expected to wear the full schooluniform correctly, every day. Bli Bli State School P&CAssociation and school staff support a Student Dress CodePolicy because we believe that it provides clothing that aimsto contribute to a safe and supportive teaching and learningenvironment.

All parents are asked to be vigilant about sending their childto school in the full uniform (refer to the Dress Code below). On those occasions where it is impossible to send your childwearing the full school uniform, you are asked to please sendalong an explanatory note. Alternatively, our Uniform Supplyprocess operates where children will be loaned an item ofclothing if required, with the understanding that it is to bereturned, laundered, within the week.

In circumstances where inappropriate or unreasonable dress isworn, appropriate actions will be taken. In most cases, studentswill be provided with a loan uniform item that must be returnedto the Office within the week, laundered appropriately. This canoccur three times before we will issue a Uniform Infringementand a record will kept for Administration purposes. Parents willbe notified if this action was taken.

Full school uniform should be worn in the following instances:

Bli Bli State School’s Dress Code includes and is limited to:

Tips for parents to prevent cyber-bullying

Kids socialise very differently these days. A lot of it takes placeon the internet, a world that can be very hard to monitor as aparent. Due to the remote nature of the internet, it may be lessobvious that your child is being subjected to cyberbullying, sobe sure to watch for symptoms and talk to your child if you haveany concerns.

Cyberbullying involves the use of email, chatroom or socialmedia site messaging on the internet, and text, picture and orvideo messaging on mobile phones. Unfortunately, it meansvictims can be bullied even when they're not at school, leavingchildren very few places to hide. Often, children may be scaredto confide in their parents regarding cyberbullying, worried

LIBRARY NEWSWelcome back or welcome to all new families.

Library Borrowing

All students have a half hour borrowing session with their classevery week. Please check with your child's teacher as to whenthis occurs. Some teachers require another adult presentwhen their class is borrowing. Please see them if you think youmight be able to help them in this way.

When borrowing, students need a library bag to protect schoolbooks. Library bags can be bought from the Tuckshop duringUniform Shop opening hours. Alternatively, any bag, preferablya waterproof bag may be used.

Students borrowings are only for a week. Please talk to yourchildren about only borrowing the amount of books they will beable to read in a week. As well as reducing processing time thisalso helps to avoid overdues.

Volunteers

We are always seeking help in the library with areas rangingfrom - returning books to shelves, as well as processing newmaterials - stamping, adding labels and covering. Some thingsmay even be taken home to complete in your free time. Pleaseconsider helping out the school, and your children, in this way. Please see myself or Mrs Reid in the library or ring 5458 2149for more information on ways you can help.
