PEACEFUL TIDINGS!

From Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church

Serving in Jesus’ name since March 1871

Hello Friends, I’ve been here eleven weeks now! Time is flying by. God has blessed me with Fredsville Lutheran. The opportunities I have here to experience and experiment, and to learn and grow continue to enrich my journey to rostered pastoral ministry. By far, the biggest blessing I have received has been the gift of your stories. Thank you for sharing these stories, these glimpses into your lives.

Did you ever think about the fact that our lives are just one big story? From the moment we are born until we take our last breath our ‘story’ continues to be written. Be it mystery, action, romance, fantasy or science fiction, it seems only logical that we should each be the author of our own story, but all of us can relate that our stories do contain lines, maybe pages, yes, even entire chapters that we certainly did not choose to be part of our narrative. Though we do not know every twist or turn that our storyline will take, we rest assured that God is beside us at every place and time in our life journey – the pinnacles and the pits, the times of joy and celebration and the times of brokenness and despair, the parts of our story that are crystal clear and the chapters that are vague and ambiguous. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

This summer we began using the Narrative Lectionary as our guide for worship planning and preaching texts. This is a change from the Revised Common Lectionary, which includes readings from all sections of the Bible but centers the preaching text from one of the four Gospels. The Narrative Lectionary will walk us through the entire Bible in its four year rotation with preaching texts from both the Old and the New Testaments. We will be learning the stories of God’s people from the initial moments of creation through the birth of the Christian church; learning as we go that though the times and places have changed, our 21st century stories are not unlike these Biblical

stories. God loves us and will never abandon us. Period. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10) That’s definitely a story that needs to be shared!

Blessings, Intern Barb

Communion Bread Bakers Needed! Below is a recipe for very simple communion bread. We are looking for people to

make communion bread that we will use during Sunday worship services. The

recipe below is a great project to do with kids! The baked bread can be put in

ziplock freezer bags, please write the date the bread was made on the bag and

then place in the freezer in the church basement. Thanks to everyone who is

helping with this vital ministry! If you have any questions regarding the recipe

feel free to check with Pastor Lisa.

Communion Bread 1 ¼ cups whole wheat flour ½ cup white flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar ¾ teaspoon baking powder ¾ cups milk 3 Tablespoons honey 1 Tablespoon melted butter or margarine

Mix dry ingredients. Mix in honey, milk and melted butter. Stir well. Knead well, until it reaches a sticky cookie dough consistency, but can still be kneaded. Divide into four parts, and roll into two flat circles. Place on creased cookie sheet, and you can score it on the surface, if preferred. Bake at 350

o for 15-20 minutes, or

until golden brown. Let cool completely. Loaves can be frozen in zip lock bags. If removed from the freezer on Saturday morning it will be thawed out for Sunday morning worship.

Secret Angel Ministry

Children, be sure to check the basket in the narthex for

something from your "secret angel" beginning in October.

“Earth Angels” Update by Jean Loger and Mary Kay Madsen

We heard the story of Joseph. Joseph’s father gave him a special coat; “a coat of many colors”. (Though Pastor Lisa clarified that it most likely was a coat with large sleeves). Well, we’ll be planting a “coat of many colors” in October in the cemetery flower garden. What???? Yes - approximately 400 tulip, daffodil, hyacinth and other bulbs will bring us a "colorful coat" next spring. Helping hands are welcome! Watch for e-mails or updates in the weekly bulletins regarding planting dates. Reminder that donations and memorials for the cemetery gardens are always welcome. Designate the contribution on your check or church offering envelope as “cemetery landscaping”.

Q & A – October 2014

NewAldaya’s Live Better. Live Well. Capital Campaign

By Sue Green

NewAldaya has started a “Live Better. Live Well. Capital Campaign”. This Capital Campaign has three components. Last month, I addressed the first component: “Memory Care House”. This month, I am focusing on the “Chapel” and “Endowment Fund” aspects. For those individuals that are interested in contributing, the contact information is at the end of this article.

Q: What is the purpose of the Live Better. Live Well. Capital Campaign? A: To address three strategic initiatives to help others “Live better!” well into the future. These initiatives were set forth by NewAldaya’s board of directors: 1) to answer the need in the Cedar Valley for additional Memory Care housing options; 2) to adjust with the growing needs of our campus community on behalf of our Christian Caring Mission, by updating and enhancing our campus chapel; and 3) to identify planned gifts to assure that NewAldaya operates for many years into the future through a growing endowment fund.

Q. Does the chapel get used often enough to warrant large scale updates? A. Yes. The chapel is used every day of the week by several pastors serving congregations in and around the Cedar Valley. On average, 8-10 Bible studies, worship services and other programs are hosted in the chapel each week. Sunday morning worship is held each week; attendance averages 120 worshipers. Several individuals call the Good Shepherd Chapel their home congregation. Individuals and families often choose to host Celebrations of Life and/or weddings in the chapel. Q. What needs to be updated in the chapel? A. “Living well” means “worshiping well.” Updating the original 1960s chapel requires interior and exterior improvements for seating, technology, flooring, lighting and storage. Additionally, to brighten the space and as a safety feature, the installation of two glass exits on either side of the sanctuary are necessary. Currently, only one small exit door exists near the front of the chapel. Exiting during an emergency would be very difficult. Enhancing these features will improve the safety AND the worship experience for all who join us in worship.

Page 7: Blessed with heritage, vision for the future and peace in ... with heritage, vision for the future and peace in the present. Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville October 2014 A message

7

Q. The chapel does not have a sign and needs paint, is that in the plans? A. Yes. As buildings have gone up around the chapel, the exterior enhancements for the chapel are certainly more noticeable! Finishing touches will include formal landscaping and a prayer garden, fresh paint, and identifying signage.

Q: When will the work start on the new Memory Care House and updating the Chapel? A: Construction on the Memory Care House began this past summer. Construction will take up to 1 year. Work on the Chapel updates will take place once that is finished.

Q: How will the construction of the new Memory Care House and updates to the Chapel be funded? A: The rising cost of health care combined with the reduction of funding from government programs severely limits funds available for projects to help residents “Live better and live well!” This is why donor support is so imperative.

Q: Why is my participation important? A: Your gift helps to ensure the completion of the Memory Care House, the chapel remodel project, and the endowed future of the organization. By participating in this campaign, you make certain that residents now and in the future will “Live better and live well.”

Q: How can I become more involved/make a contribution to the campaign? A: Please contact Annie Vander Werff at 319.268.0401, and she will provide you the information you need specific to your request.

Q: What options are available to support the campaign? A: Donors may choose to make an outright gift or provide a pledge to be paid over a 3 to 5 year period. Additionally, gift commitments made through estate and planned gifts may be designated to the endowment.

Q: What is a matching gift? A: Many employers have matching gift programs: a benefit that includes the business “matching” or making a donation of the same amount as your contribution to our organization. We encourage you to check with your employer to see if they have a matching gift program.

Q: Is it possible to make contributions in forms other than cash? A: Yes, you may wish to take advantage of a variety of giving plans that include transfer of real estate, stocks, bonds, securities and appropriate personal property to NewAldaya Lifescapes. For more details about these options, please contact Annie Vander Werff at 319.268.0401. We have professional advisors who can assist you.

Page 8: Blessed with heritage, vision for the future and peace in ... with heritage, vision for the future and peace in the present. Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville October 2014 A message

8

Q: How will the funds be used? A: Funds will be dedicated to the Live Better. Live Well. Campaign to help pay for construction costs and to fund an endowment which will support ongoing revisions and programs which promote a campus that “Lives better and Lives well” into the future.

Q: Is my contribution tax deductible? A: Yes, we are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and contributions are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by federal and state law.

The Groundbreaking & Dedication Ceremony is Sunday, October 5th, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

Confirmation Classes are resuming with a Twist for ALL AGES!

Pastor Lisa is beginning a younger/longer style of confirmation! Confirmation class this year will also include 5th graders as well as 6th, 7th, and 8th! We should have a great sized group to do all kinds of insane things! The first class was held September 10th.

Throughout the year pastor will offer one time classes for all youth and their parents at their grade level. These classes will be:

October 15th Pastor will meet with all preschoolers & kindergarten children and their families to talk about Baptism.

November 12th Pastor will meet with all 1st and 2nd graders and their families to talk about Communion.

January 14th Pastor will meet with all 4th graders and their families to talk about the Lord's Prayer and Prayer. Letters were sent to families with more details as each class time approaches. This is an exciting addition to an already exciting confirmation learning plan! We hope that all of you will pray for the youth of this congregation and their families as they spend time learning together about their church, the Bible, their Savior and God!

Funeral Planning Event

On October 4th Pastor Lisa and Intern Barb will hold a funeral

planning event. We will meet in the church fellowship hall at

9:00 a.m. and conclude around 10:30 a.m. Planning your funeral is a very loving thing to do for your family. Even if you are not

ready to plan everything right now, you still will want to attend

the event to take home a packet so you can do your planning

when you are ready. If you have questions about this event

please contact the church office and/or Pastor Lisa.

Fredsville Council Minutes August 24, 2014

The Meeting was called to order by President Doug Dall at 6:30 pm. Intern Barb led devotions. Members in attendance: Darla Andersen, Jacque Bakker, Dan Crotty, Doug Dall, Duane Hamilton, Lance Loger, Zach Nicholson, Pat Pruisner, Audrey Stefan, Steve Veatch, Travis Wibben, and Treasurer Holly Kruger, Pastor Lisa Dietrich, and Intern Barb Jones. Absent: Bev Lupkes

Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s reports were distributed. Balances are as follows: Memorial Fund $ 7,211.60 Building Fund $ 6,949.81

Secretary’s Report: Members reviewed the minutes of the July 20 meeting; a motion to approve was made by Steve, seconded by Darla, all voting aye. Old Business:

1. Building Update: At this time Dan reported on Property Committee activities as well as the building update, due to overlapping information. The committee met on August 17 and the following items have been completed: LP has been booked for the season at $1.65 per gallon for 1400 gallons plus the tanks were summer filled; air conditioning lines have been reinsulated and drain lines cleaned; faucet on small sink in the kitchen has been replaced; parsonage has been power-washed; chair and table racks have been ordered. A bid of $1,642.45 was received from Heaven’s Best to clean all carpeting throughout the entire facility and buff/clean/wax tile floors in the kitchen and sanctuary upon completion of the building project. Motion was made by Steve, seconded by Darla, to approve this bid. The committee also has an estimate on lower level restroom upgrade, however the consensus is to scale back on the extent of the upgrade and come back with new figures, considering the availability of the additional new restrooms on the main level when the addition is complete.

Upcoming property needs include two new entry doors and window replacement in the garage area of the parsonage, as well as removal of the chain link fence; water line replacement from the well pit to the Vicar’s Villa and cemetery property;

11

replacement of the HVAC unit in the parsonage. The Property Committee is recommending that the HVAC replacement be put on hold at this time until the building project is complete and final costs are known. The unit is functioning, but given the age of the unit, its replacement must be kept in mind in being proactive with ongoing repairs and upgrades to our facilities.

Dan then listed anticipated completion dates on the various stages of the building project (dry wall, insulation, exterior facia and gutter, painting, ceramic tile, ceiling grid, restroom fixtures & partitions, window casement, etc.) noting that things are currently ahead of schedule. A concern had been raised about the area where the old roof ties in with the new and a decision was made to extend the new over the entire new gathering space for a cost of $4,900.

2. Pastor hospital visits: Feedback on this issue following the semi-annual meeting was discussed.

New Business: 1. Special Offering for cemetery landscaping: A request was made to have a special offering to help defray the cost of new bulbs and plantings for this fall. After some discussion, this item was tabled and the property/landscaping committee will be asked to consider the request. 2. Budget forms for committees: Doug distributed a new form that committees will be asked to submit with estimates of their anticipated expenditures by the October meeting. This form will provide a system to assist the council in preparing the budget, provide more accountability and better tracking of funding requests through the year, and more continuity as committee membership turns over. 3. Christmas in Dike: Pastor Lisa brought up another evangelism opportunity for Fredsville in Dike’s “Razzle Dazzle” event in December. She will approach WELCA members with a suggestion of serving samples of Danish strips, and then selling them as a fundraiser. Council members are encouraged to seek other suggestions for Fredsville participation from the congregation.

Pastor’s Report was submitted and accepted.

Intern’s Report was submitted and accepted.

Worship & Music - The Committee is working on procedures and policies for use of church facilities for funerals, weddings, and other special events. When completed, a pamphlet with this information will be produced. Vessels have been ordered so that grape juice can be offered when there is communion by intinction. Committee has discussed times, etc. for Wednesday night activities. Evangelism & Stewardship – No meeting, although Fredsville participated in the Watermelon Days parade and distributed freezer pops to boys and girls along the route.

Property – See report earlier in the minutes.

Social Ministry – School supplies were collected for Bremwood students. The committee will be setting up again for the Stork’s Nest project. A meeting will be held in the near future to discuss the fall food drive and the angel tree project.

Christian Education – The committee is organizing 4th-6th graders to assist with the younger boys and girls about once a month. This year’s Sunday School curriculum will coincide with the adult teachings, providing families an opportunity for sharing about Sunday lessons. Intern Barb will be adding a music ministry aspect to Sunday School classes.

Mutual Ministry – No meeting

Cemetery – No meeting.

Endowment – No meeting. Duane is reviewing information and will contact committee members for an update on activities.

Historical - Mold has been addressed in the historical room; items have been sorted, organized and things not relative to the church’s history have been discarded. A fan will be installed to provide better circulation in the room.

Internship - A meeting was held, but several members were not available. There was some discussion on a recommendation concerning future interns, but the item was tabled until more discussion can take place and possibly include some wording pertaining to overall long-term staffing needs.

President’s Report – No report.

The next Council meeting will be Sunday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Audrey Stefan, Council Secretary

Sharing God’s love and care through a quilt

Do you have a favorite quilt? Maybe it’s one a family member made, or

one you lovingly made for someone else. Many of LSI’s clients have a

favorite quilt, made by people like you! LSI is blessed to have many

congregations and friends who share in our social ministry by stitching

love into the hearts of children, families and adults across Iowa. Your

quilts travel all over the state to be delivered to babies and young

children, to youth at our Bremwood and Beloit Residential Treatment

Centers and to homes where the warm comfort of a quilt is desperately

needed by a family.

Thank you for sharing God’s love and care through these special gifts!

If you or someone you know would like to participate in this ministry,

please contact Deb Whitford for more information at

[email protected].

LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at

www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

“When he saw the quilts, he ran around like a kid in a candy store.”

We asked LSI staff to share what quilts made by churches and friends of LSI have meant to children and families! Here are some of their stories: “At Bremwood, we had a young man who was so excited to pick out his quilt that he talked about it for a week beforehand! When he went to look at the quilts, he ran around like a kid in a candy store. After some searching, he picked out an army print blanket, and he called his father to talk about it later that night. Another young woman was leaving Bremwood, and while she was excited to go home, she was also sad to leave her friends and staff. She said the blanket she picked out would make sure she never forgot these important people in her life. She snuggled up to her blanket right away and showed it off to all her friends.” Your quilts are also delivered to families in our early childhood programs: “We have a family with three young children that received quilts. They were so grateful as they only had pads on the floor to sleep on and the quilts made the kids much more comfortable. Another family with a new baby said their quilt was their favorite blanket for tummy time. Another mom who received a quilt placed it in her baby’s crib right

14

away, saying the maker of the quilt must have given a lot of thought to it. She called it a ‘kind and meaningful gift.’” And, sometimes a quilt or a blanket helps hold a family together: “All ages love them! They are great for sitting together or watching movies together, and we like fostering family activities. Quilts and blankets help promote family relationships and families gathering together.” What a difference you make! Thank you for helping so many people feel safe, warm and loved. An unexpected blessing Jerusalem

Little Asmah, who lives with her family in Gaza, was recently diagnosed with cancer. The hospital in Gaza City did not have the facilities to treat her, but the doctors told her parents that Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem did. Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger help support Augusta Victoria Hospital through The Lutheran World Federation. Asmah’s family applied for travel permits so they could enter Israel for her care, but only the child and her grandparents were allowed to come. Asmah’s parents had to stay behind. Asmah’s treatment would take just a few minutes each day for several weeks, but delays at the border could put her at great risk. The hospital provided lodging for Asmah and her grandparents, and Asmah began her course of treatment.During the family’s stay, Asmah’s Grandmother was shocked to learn that she had diabetes. But Augusta Victoria Hospital has an excellent diabetes program, and she was treated. Both grandparents took part in classes to learn how to manage her condition at home. Now Asmah and her grandparents are back home in Gaza, reunited with their family and friends, glad that their stay at Augusta Victoria Hospital held more blessings than they had expected.
