From Pastor Sarah

Greetings. In May, our congregation will focus on Care for Creation. We live in a time when caring for the earth has never been more pressing or more complicated. The warming of our planet affects all manner of life forms. Our economy is built on unsustainable consumption and pollution. Each of us is affected by environmental shifts and at the same time, responsible for them.

I believe that one hundred years from now, our great-grandchildren will look at all we knew about climate change and environmental degradation and ask: why didn’t you care?

We do care. One of Peace’s core values is “we promote love and justice for all of God’s creation.” Our church already has taken many steps to curb our use of energy (programmable thermostats, LED lights, automatic light switches). We have planted native trees and turned much of our property into gardens. The time is ripe, how-ever, to come together and ask ourselves and our God, what more can we do?

The issues can be totally overwhelming. It’s especially hard to figure out what one person or one church can do when faced with the enormity of our environmental problems. And yet, there is always hope.

As we give intentional focus to how we can care for creation, we will find new hope, avenues to affect real change, and the grace that comes from living in sync with our world.

Each Sunday in May you will be invited to share one thing you’ve done to care for creation. For a list of 10 ways you can act today to care for creation, see here.

Adult education sessions on May 7 and 14th, led by Greta Christ and Aaron Mulhollen, will focus on how scripture and faith compel us to care for creation.

Sermons in May will focus on various aspects of caring for creation:

May 7: Right Relationship: to till and to keep. May 14: Love Your Mother: Dependence and Praise May 21: Care for creation = care for people.

This is just the beginning of recommitting ourselves as Christians and as a church to the holy work of caring for the world God made. Sometimes our individual actions seem remarkably small, but they are important. As Mar-tin Luther famously said:

“Even if I knew the world were going to go to pieces tomorrow, today I would plant a tree.”

Hello all !

Please remember the family meeting on May 21st - we'll be electing new members to the council, and voting on ELCA mandated changes to the Peace constitution, as well as changes to the by-laws. We'll also have more information and discussion on the proposed capital campaign; if you have questions and/or comments, you can bring them up with any council member or with Pr. Sarah or you can bring them to the meeting.

Council has been discussing and praying about both the how and the why of future plans for Peace. What makes us church (as opposed to simply being a very nice social group)? What are the ways in which we, this group of people in this place can share the gospel - now and in the future? We want to not only continue the good work we do now, but also to be open to new, different ways to engage the world (near & far) and spread the good news of God's love. The purpose of any fund raising we do - whether our annual stewardship campaign or a special "capital" campaign - is not to "fix the building" or "fix the organ" or build a whatever". The purpose is always to enable us to better spread the gospel; part of our work is to always remember this.

These discussions about the future, both within the council and within the family as a whole, have been exciting and stressful. By involving the entire family, we've ensured input from different people who have various concerns, anxieties, and goals. We've disagreed about proposed goals and proposed meth-ods, but we're still talking to each other, still planning, still praying - and I am sustained and supported by the love and the grace that the people of peace show over and over.

How Does Our Garden Grow?

Soon you will see a new garden in the Lauxman

House lawn. Amy Reagan represents “Food for Oth-

ers” a program with Harvest Against Hunger Ameri-

Corps VISTA. “Food for Others” is a non-profit food

pantry located in Merrifield, Virginia that gives free

food to about 1,800 families in need every week. In

our effort to provide healthier choices for our cli-

ents, all of the produce grown in this garden will be

distributed to them. Peace is donating the space for

the garden that will be cared for by Amy’s volun-

teers. If you have any questions about the commu-

nity garden program or about Food for Others in

The May Special Offering is

for Lutheran Camps

Mar-Lu-Ridge, Caroline Furnace and Lu-theran Social Services Kid Haven and Teen Haven (formerly Camp Safe Haven). The offerings received will be evenly divided among these three local Lutheran-supported youth camps. Be sure to write “Lutheran Camp” in the memo line of your check or use the envelopes in the back of the pews.

Property Committee is Looking for Tools!

If you have any tools or a toolbox sitting around your house un-

used looking for a home, Peace could be that home. The prop-

erty committee is looking to start a toolbox at Peace so that

maintenance projects can be completed without having to drag a

tool box from home. If you have any tools you would like to do-

nate (we are also looking for a leaf blower) please bring them in

and place them in the usher's closet or see Don or Anna Hart-

mayer. If we get duplicates the extras will be donated to a local

charity.

Volunteer with ALIVE! May 27, 2017 8:30am - 11:30am

ALIVE!( ALexandrians In Volved Ecumeni-cally) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization of volunteers from over 40 religious congrega-tions and the community working together to help those in need in Alexandria, Vir-ginia. ALIVE! serves thousands of needy Al-exandrians each year. There is a food distri-bution for families in need on the last Sat-urday of every month.

PEACE FOR THE FUTURE

Every month there will be an update about our vision, capital campaign, and progress in the newsletter. Council and I have been working hard on the vision our campaign will help fund. Our vision incorporates the thoughts and feedback we’ve gathered from the congregation in the past year, as well as the congre-gational values and mission. From now on, instead of “funding the future” you’ll hear about:

Peace for the Future: Rooted in Community, Ready to Serve.

This theme captures that it’s essential that what we do now enables a bright and Peace-filled future. We are dedicated to our neighborhood and we value life in community. Changes to our facilities will make us poised to serve more people.

Most importantly, this theme captures what is most important: We trust that God is making a future for Peace! I take inspiration from Isaiah 43: “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”

At the May Family Meeting, May 21st, I will present the vision. There are 4 main components:

Warm Welcome Inspired Worship Environmental Integrity Community Ministry

Once we have determined, as much as possible, the “what and why” of our vision, we will work on the “how.” A team of people will work in May and June to engage architects and determine how we can up-grade our property to realize our vision.

The major projects that emerged from the engineering study and that we have been discussing all along (HVAC, Roof, Repainting bricks, AV System, Solar panels, Signage etc) will be included. The more we can see those individual projects as part of a larger vision of welcome, worship, environment and community, the more we will move into the future together.

Next Steps for you:

Come to the family meeting on May 21st to learn more and give your feedback.

Volunteer to be on the architect / design team (we are looking for two more people).

Pray for our church’s future, that what we are doing now positions us to serve future generations of people.

Finally, last but not least, John Clark will serve as the chairperson for the capital campaign that will fund this vision. In the summer we will fill out the campaign leadership team. Thank you to John for taking on this important role!

In case of rain, the event will be inside the church. Feel free to bring food, snacks, and water. Restrooms and plenty of parking available. We will have snacks and water for sale, with proceeds going to a local advocacy group.
