PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As the fifteenth season of the Black Diamond AFL comes to a close with the Annual General Meeting, I would like to thank all of the players, officials, umpires, volunteers and supporters for their efforts in making this season so successful. I am especially thankful for the efforts of my colleagues on the Board of Management, Phil Lewis, Wal Bembic, Roger Price, Simon Wood, Graham Edgley and also Simon Smyth, who resigned from the Board in February. I would like to congratulate this seasons premiers, Terrigal Avoca in Black Diamond Cup, Wyong Lakes in First Division and Newcastle City in

Second Division. I would also like to thank our major sponsor for 2014 Wilson Security, a deal that will continue into the 2015 season, as well as the many partners of the Black Diamond AFL in 2014 - The Newcastle Herald, BLK, Prime7, Star 104.5, Bar TV, Subway Morisset, Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club, Elite Sports Images, Officeworks, Target Press, Eclipse Media Events & PR, Kooindah Waters Residential Golf and Spa Resort and Rustica Restaurant. There have been many highlights in the season worthy of reflection including:

The successful return to Nelson Bay to the Wilson Security Black Diamond Cup

The admission of The Entrance Bateau Bay & Muswellbrook to the Black Diamond AFL

Growth in teams from Wyong Lakes and Cardiff

The league exceeding 1000 participants

Christine Burrows for her excellent work as Umpires Coach

Roger Crowhurst as President of the Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association

Courtney Knight, Chris Bishop and the successful Representative Team

Isaac Heeney, Vahid Roser, Nathan Vaisey and Jayden Rymer, for their representative selection for the NSW/ACT RAMS.

Isaac Heeney being selected as an Academy selection for the Sydney Swans in the 2014 draft

Our presentation evening and pre season launch, both held at Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club were also highlights of the year. Clubs should be commended on their support of the events and the events were ably compared by Michael Cain and Steve Allen respectively. By now some clubs will have held their Annual General Meetings and I thank those officials who have contributed in 2014 to the running of their clubs, and in turn fostering the code in our region. To those who are taking positions on club committees for 2015, some for the first time, I welcome you to the football family. Finally, I’d like to thank Garry Burkinshaw for his efforts as Football Operations Manager. Garry and I spoke on an almost daily basis throughout the season and the professional approach that he undertook his duties certainly made the position of President of the Black Diamond AFL a lot easier. I hope everybody enjoys the off season and I look forward to seeing you all back for 2015. Yours in Footy Michael Gray BDAFL President

FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORT Preparation for the 2015 season has already begun, however it is time to reflect on the 2014 season, which was arguably the leagues best. I congratulate the 2014 Premiers, Terrigal Avoca in the Black Diamond Cup, Wyong Lakes in 1

st Division, and Newcastle City, who made it Back-

to-Back 2nd

Division premierships. Congratulations also to Terrigal Avoca on winning the Club Championship award.

The season began back in November with the holding of the Annual General Meeting. Simon Wood was elected onto the Board for the first time, whilst Phil Lewis was returned to the Board unopposed. They joined incumbent Board Members, Michael Gray, Wal Bembic, Graham Edgley, and Roger Price to make up the Board. Simon Smyth was also on the Board however he resigned from this position in February and his position on the Board still remains vacant. At the first Board Meeting Michael Gray was re-elected as President for a second year, however the Vice President’s position was not filled. A Delegates meeting was held following the AGM, an Operations meeting was also held prior to the commencement of the season. A second delegates meeting scheduled for July was cancelled when it was deemed that a further meeting was not required. In January/February the league held club meetings at Singleton, No 1 Sportsground and Killarney Vale, which were attended by Michael Gray and myself. These meeting we designed to give the clubs an opportunities to raise any issues they may have, whilst the league also provided information on a number of topics relevant to the clubs. At the end of 2013, AFL NSW/ACT established the AFL Hunter Coast. The AFL Hunter Coast is a body formed to oversee the development of football in this region. It was also formed with the goal of bring all three football competitions, namely the Black Diamond AFL (BDAFL), Central Coast Juniors and Newcastle Juniors under the one banner. Unfortunately, from the BDAFL’s perspective a lack of consultation from AFL NSW/ACT in relation to the way the new body would be structured and how football would be governed resulted in the BDAFL declining to join the new body. The BDAFL is in strong support of an AFL Hunter Coast structure however believe the current structure does not deliver the best outcome for the league or its affiliates. 2014 saw Wilson Security come on Board as the league’s first major sponsor since 2011. Their support is very welcome and the relationship is such that they have agreed to continue the sponsorship into 2015. For their major sponsorship, Wilson Security became the naming rights sponsor of the league and also the Black Diamond Cup competition and had their logo incorporated into the existing BDAFL logo and also had their logo on the Matchday footballs. They also received complimentary tickets to the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants home matches in Sydney courtesy of AFL NSW/ACT. Newcastle Herald also came on Board as a Contra Sponsor via a weekly colour advertisement of the upcoming weekends matches. Prime7 were also a contra sponsor with a weekly advert shown several times throughout the week. Prime7 also sponsored the Club of the Year program. They also provided introductions for both the Season Launch and Presentation Night. Star104.5FM continued their sponsorship which this year was their 10

th season in which they

have supported the competition. Star 104.5FM promoted upcoming events on a regular basis also had a live broadcast from Adelaide St Oval on 16 August 2014, which was well received. Their “Roadstar” vehicle was a regular at matches on the Central Coast and was also at the Grand Final in Newcastle. Sportscoast Trophies and Embroidery and BLK were also minor sponsors.

Sponsorship is an important part of any sporting body whether it be club or the league and we are grateful for the support we received. It is important however that we continue to support those businesses which support us. As a follow on from the additional sponsorship the Board made a decision to invest in the promotion and marketing of the BDAFL and engaged the services Eclipse Media, Promotions and PR (EMPPR) for a six months term at $1,650 per month. The strategy around this decision was to improve the exposure of the league via the three forms of media (print, radio and TV) as well as provide a vehicle to increase sponsorship. Over the six months, EMPPR issued a media release each week previewing the weekends matches. They also issued media releases on any other significant stories. All the releases were as a result of requests from the Football Operations Manager as opposed to editorials driven by Eclipse. EMPPR were responsible for obtaining the contra sponsorship arrangement for the weekly advertisement in the Newcastle Herald, however no other sponsorships were obtained. They did however enhance the leagues sponsorship proposal. Overall the investment was considered worthwhile and did contribute to an increase in exposure and, via their social media contacts certainly exposed the BDAFL to people who may not have been previously aware. Special thanks to Ivan Sprydz for the work he did. The agreement expired in September and has not been renewed. Another major initiative, and arguably the best since the leagues inception, was the introduction of live broadcast of matches via the internet. A company known as BarTV, approached the BDAFL about getting matches covered and then shown on replay over the internet and through selected clubs and hotels through the region. Whilst this was seen as an excellent opportunity the discussion got around to Live streaming the Black Diamond Cup Match of the Week. Viewers were able to watch the matches live by clicking on a link on either the BDAFL, BarTV or Newcastle Herald Website. In addition to this they could also watch a replay of the match at a later date or view a highlights package (approx 9 minutes) compiled by BarTV. The Black Diamond Cup Match of the Week schedule was structured to not only get the best matches shown but also to ensure that all clubs had equal opportunity to have their matches broadcast. All clubs also had the opportunity to get additional matches covered albeit to be shown on replay. Overall, 24 matches were shown live and a further 6 matches on replay. This initiative was well received by the clubs, the players and both league and AFL supporters. 2014 saw the introduction of two new clubs, Muswellbrook, transferred to the BDAFL from Tamworth AFL whilst The Entrance Bateau Bay formed a new senior club as an extension of their highly successful junior club. Both clubs had one team which played in the Second Division competition. Both clubs proved to be very competitive on-field (The Entrance Bateau Bay made the 2

nd

Division finals) and very well run off-field. They are both welcome additions to the BDAFL. Twenty six nominations were received from the twelve clubs with all nominations being accepted.

In addition to teams from Muswellbrook and The Entrance Bateau Bay, Cardiff entered a third team joining Newcastle City, Terrigal Avoca and Warners Bay as having teams in all three Divisions. Wyong Lakes also entered a second team which is the same as Killarney Vale, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Nelson Bay and Singleton. Following their undefeated Premiership win in 1

st Division in 2014, Nelson Bay were promoted

into the Black Diamond Cup competition, for the first time since 2008, making it an eight team competition, eight teams were accepted in 1

st Division and ten teams in 2

nd Division.

Unfortunately after three rounds of the competition it was obvious that Lake Macquarie were not going to be competitive in the Black Diamond Cup competition, and a decision was made, in consultation with club to remove their senior team from the Black Diamond Cup competition and place them in the 1

st Division competition. This resulted in the Black Diamond Cup

competition being reduced to seven teams and 1st Division increased to nine teams.

The season ran for twenty one weeks, with eighteen weeks for home and away matches and three weeks for finals. There was a general bye for Easter and the June long weekend whilst another weekend was set aside for a wet weather round. In the Black Diamond Cup all teams played 15 matches and had three byes, 1

st Division 15 matches and three byes (due to the

late inclusion Lake Macquarie played 14 matches and had 4 byes) whilst 2nd

Division played 17 matches. The three matches that Lake Macquarie played in the Black Diamond Cup were voided with the opposition clubs credited with a bye and Lake Macquarie given a bye in each of the first three rounds in 1

st Division.

In the Black Diamond Cup all teams played each other twice with the remaining three matches done on a seeded basis depending on where the teams finished the previous season. The Divisionalised structure always makes fixturing a challenge especially in relation to having all teams playing together at the same venue, in particular at home. In the end 75% of the time clubs had at least two teams at the same venue whilst clubs with three teams had all teams at the same venue on 68% of the time. The clubs should be commended for their ability to overcome the difficulties associated with their teams being at different venues on the same day and being flexible with the venue of some of their lower grade teams which resulted in clubs opting to forgo standalone home matches in order to have all teams at the same venue. The fixture was finalised in January, however he to be adjusted when Lake Macquarie changed competitions. All matches were played on Saturday, with Lake Macquarie’s home fixtures played as twilight fixtures. Overall all competitions were very keenly contested and the finals positions in both the Black Diamond Cup and 2

nd Division competition still up for grabs going into the final round.

The standard of competition continues to improve with the number of talented players returning to play in the BDAFL and less players leaving the area to play in Sydney. This allows the depth of talent to become greater which is the secret to any standard of competition improving. Forfeits were kept to a minimum this year with only one in 1

st Division and three in 2

nd

Division. Wet weather had minimal impact during the home and away season. The only match that was affected by the weather was the Round 14A Black Diamond Cup match between Singleton and Terrigal Avoca at Singleton. With no wet weather rounds for the Black Diamond Cup competition the match was unable to be rescheduled. No other matches required transferring. Unfortunately the same could not be said for the finals, with rain playing havoc on all finals days.

The Lower Division Semi Finals and Preliminary Finals had to be relocated from Newcastle No 1 Sportsground to Bateau Bay Sporting Facility the day before they were scheduled, whilst heavy overnight rain saw Newcastle Council staff deem No 1 Sportsground unsuitable for play for the Grand Final. Credit to council however, as they allowed the Grand Finals to proceed, subject to the BDAFL accepting the risk. With improved weather conditions the grand finals were not affected. A major improvement in the BDAFL competition is the standard of the grounds and the ability to withstand significant rainfall. This along with the support of the clubs and councils enables matches to proceed when in the past they would need to be postponed or cancelled. We are also lucky to have a ground with the surface quality of Bateau Bay Sporting Facility. Despite all the wet weather around finals time, being able to transfer the matches to a ground that has superb drainage and allows matches to be played in all weather is a godsend. Once again the BDAFL took over the winter seasonal tenancy of Newcastle No 1 Sportsground. As in 2013 both Cardiff and Newcastle City played their home matches at the venue. This arrangement worked satisfactorily however greater understanding and empathy between the two clubs, especially when they are playing each other would enhance the relationship. This arrangement has significant advantages to both clubs with Newcastle City receiving a substantial financial saving by having Cardiff play home games at the venue whilst for Cardiff it gives then a regular venue for home games. A parking fee was once again applicable at No 1 Sportsground with Newcastle Lions Club acting as gate managers. The funds were split between the BDAFL Home club & Newcastle Netball 35% each and Lions Clubs 30%. The future of this is under a cloud following the decision by Newcastle Council to regulate the parking fees for cars parked inside No 1 Sportsground. If this is implemented Council will collect the parking fees with no decision made on the distribution of these funds. A significant amount of work has been undertaken by AFL NSW/ACT in consultation with Cardiff and Lake Macquarie Council in trying to find a permanent home ground for Cardiff. It is hoped that by Christmas a clearer position will be known. Unfortunately the redevelopment of No 1 Sportsground has come to a standstill with Council’s application for a Grant, required to fund the project, was unsuccessful. A further Grant Application will be submitted in coming months with Council still committed to completing the upgrade. The Season Launch was held at Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club to introduce the season. The event was a Sunday lunch time event and was attended by approximately 60 club members and officials. Michael Cain from NBN news was the MC and he did an excellent job interviewing the club coaches from all 12 clubs. The event was also used to announce the major sponsorship from Wilson Security and also as a welcome for the two new clubs. The leagues Gala off-field event of the year, the Elliott Davey Medal Presentation night was also held at Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club. The event was attended by approximately 230 people who had an enjoyable night. Congratulations on James Webster on winning his second consecutive Elliott Davey Medal. Each team were allocated eight tickets as part of their affiliation costs with additional tickets able to be purchased for $50 each. Dinner and pre-dinner drinks were included in the ticket price. Well renowned local media personality, Steve Allan was the MC for the night and he once again did a magnificent job. In a first, the event was streamed live over the internet courtesy of BarTV. The was a great initiative and well received. It enabled those people who unable to attend the opportunity to view the night with over 600 views recorded.

Representative Football again played a major role in the 2014 season with the senior side playing AFL Sydney Development squad in Newcastle. The astute leadership of Chris Bishop and Courtney Knight along with a committed playing group saw the BDAFL record a comfortable victory. 2014 also saw a Development side play a pre-season match against the Sydney Swans Academy. An approach was made by the Swans to gauge the BDAFL’s interest as they were looking for a solid hitout prior to the commencement of the TAC cup. The match was played in Sydney in warm conditions and despite solid efforts by the players the Swans recorded a good victory. The only disappointment from this exercise was the fact that despite a commitment to do so by the Swans, no BDAFL players were given the opportunity to play for the Swans Reserve Grade side during the year. In 2013, thirteen players were given that opportunity. Coaching Accreditation was again compulsory for all appointed coaches. Coaching courses were held in Sydney prior to the season starting whilst a course was also held at Doyalson in May. Insurance for clubs, players and public liability was again taken out through JLT Sport as part of the National AFL Program. AFL NSW/ACT paid the premium on our league’s behalf then invoiced the BDAFL who in turn invoiced the clubs. The NCCUA was also covered under this policy with additional cover taken out through the NSW (Government’s) Sporting Injuries Insurance Scheme. The league continued to use the Sporting Pulse Footyweb System which enabled match information to be input directly and edited by club personnel. Club became more adept at using the Livescoring function and this proved to be popular with the supporters who were able to keep up to date with the scores of all matches via the BDAFL website. Home clubs were also required to update match details by 7:00pm on the night of the game/s and SMS the results to me within 10 minutes of the finish of the senior game. I commend those who undertook this duty for their dedication in the way they got the job done. 2014 saw a change to the member registration process with players now required to complete their own registration on-line. Whilst there was some scepticism with this process, I am certain that in coming years these will be overcome. The BDAFL continued with the Yellow & Red Card (Send-Off) System as well the Prescribed Penalty option for reported players. When a reportable incident was encountered the field umpire had the authority to send the player from the ground using a yellow card for minor offences for 15 minutes of elapsed playing time and a red card for more serious offences which encompassed the remainder of the match. In both cases the player were permitted to be replaced, albeit after fifteen minutes for those who receive a red card. As in 2013, the Umpires completed the Report form and Offence Grade Template on-line after the match. Once the forms were completed on line the Football Operations Manager when then send a copy of the report form, offence grade template as well as the Prescribed Penalty offered to the clubs. The clubs had until 12pm on Tuesday to advise if they would accept the prescribed penalty or wish to have the matter heard by the tribunal the following evening. This year of the 25 reports made, 18 opted to take the Prescribed Penalty. David Reed, Anthony Monk, Paul Deaves and Blair Lindsay filled the role of the tribunal members in 2014, with Reed and Monk both acting as Chairman. I would like to thank all the members for their assistance throughout the year. A pleasing result this year was the fact that the BDAFL Investigative Officer was not required this year. This can be attributed to the good leadership at all clubs.

This year the Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association (NCCUA) was again affiliated with the BDAFL. The relationship between the BDAFL and NCCUA is very positive and this is due to the excellent leadership shown by Roger Crowhurst and his committee. The BDAFL Board agreed to a new one year agreement for the NCCUA to supply umpires to the BDAFL. Umpire payments continued to be in two parts with the major component continuing to be paid on match day whilst the umpires had the opportunity to be paid an incentive payment of approximately 20%. To receive the incentive payment the umpires had to be available for 75% of matches, attend 75% of training and to either be accredited or obtaining accreditation. Those umpires who met the incentive criteria received their incentive payments at the end of Round 9 and at the conclusion of the year. It is pleasing to note that 60% of umpires achieved the incentive payment which is a significant improvement on 2013. Christine Burrows was reappointed as Umpires Coach for a second year and once again her performance in this role was excellent. Christine development skills continue to shine with the number of junior umpires progressing through to BDAFL ranks continuing to rise. The BDAFL under Christine’s guidance are the leaders in umpire development in the state with a number of umpires being given the opportunity to officiate a higher level matches or be part of development squad. This augers very well for the future. Christine has already been reappointed for 2015. In a positive move it was decided to establish two umpire training bases, one at No 1 Sportsground in Newcastle on Wednesday evenings and one at Bateau Bay Sporting Facility on the Central Coast on Tuesday evenings. In addition to this, once a month all umpires would meet at the AFL Office in Morisset for a combined coaching session. This move was well accepted by all umpires and resulted in an increase in training attendances. The Umpire’s appointment panel consisted of Christine, NCCUA Representative (John Sullivan) and BDAFL Representative (Garry Burkinshaw). The appointment process remained unchanged with all Black Diamond Cup matches being allocated a full panel of umpires, with one field umpire then appointed to all First Division matches followed by Second Division. Should there be surplus umpires after this, two umpires would then be appointed, commencing at First Division. Club umpires continued to play an important role in the BDAFL with each team in First & Second Division required to provide a club umpire. This meant that when an NCCUA umpire was appointed there would be three umpires officiating the match. No match could commence without a minimum of two umpires. Club Umpires were required to be register on-line and complete a simple on-line club umpiring training course. In 2014, there were 43 club officials who officiated as a club umpire. The upskilling of our Club Umpires will be a major focus for 2015 with improvements to the registration process and also increased training/coaching. After adopting the AFL NSW/ACT Generic By-Laws in 2013, which required some significant changes, there were only minimal By-Law changes in 2014. In 2014, the BDAFL used Sherrin KB footballs, with a new football required for all Black Diamond Cup matches. A used football (defined as having not been used for more than two games previously) could be used for both First & Second Division. The footballs carried both the BDAFL logo and the Wilson Security logo. The BDAFL were required to order the footballs through AFL NSW/ACT which resulted in the clubs getting the footballs at a subsidised rate. The BDAFL also provided a further subsidy of $10 per match ball which saw clubs paying $99 per match ball as opposed to the RRP of $150.

Following the unsatisfactory performance of Cougar Sportswear as the leagues apparel supplier in 2013 the BDAFL lobbied AFL NSW/ACT for the abolishment of the “Approved Supplier’ program. AFL NSW/ACT in their wisdom decided to retain the program with a new list of suppliers retained. The Board decided to continue with the arrangement of all clubs requiring to purchase their on-field apparel through the league. To accommodate this, the Board approached all six approved suppliers to provide a tender for the BDAFL’s business. A tender was received from all suppliers and after much discussion BLK were awarded the tender. Both the clubs and the BDAFL continue to do their bit in the aid of charity. The league supported the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation Charity with all clubs purchasing rainbow shoelaces for their players to wear in Round 14. This raised $1,200 for the Foundation. The clubs continued to build on their relationship with the junior clubs within their pathways. In addition to providing coaches for the junior clubs matchday activities included Juniors and seniors playing at the same ground on the same day, Auskickers playing at half time and Auskickers walking out with the Black Diamond Cup players prior to a match. This is a positive step and whilst it would be fair to say that some clubs engage with their junior clubs better than others, they all acknowledge the importance the junior clubs play. Women’s football continued to gain impetus with Cardiff again holding their successful “Chick Kick” whilst AFL NSW/ACT held a Women’s “Come & Try” day at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground. Both these events were well supported and the BDAFL have announced that they will support the introduction of a Women’s competition in 2015 if there is sufficient numbers to field a minimum of four teams, In closing I would like to thank all those people who have assisted me in my role this year, in particular to Michael Gray and his Board, the Club Presidents, Secretaries, Football Managers, Coaches, Christine Burrows in her role as BDAFL Umpires Coach and Simon Smyth as AFL NSW/ACT Regional Manager, Hunter Central Coast Region. See you in 2015. Garry Burkinshaw Football Operations Manager

TREASURER’S REPORT

The BDAFL once again had another successful year financially and remain in a strong financial position. The final result was a loss of $10,093, however this was a result of the Board of Management making a strategic decision to invest in the lifting of the profile of the competition. This decision included engaging Eclipse Media, Events & PR to increase the leagues media profile. The engaging of BarTV to broadcast live the Match of the Week was also another decision made by the Board. These two investments cost the BDAFL $15,332, however I think we all agree were both very successful. Total income increased by 26% to $221,091, which was brought about by an increase in sponsorship and also increase from affiliation fee due to the two additional clubs and four additional teams. The relocation of two finals days due to wet weather resulted in a loss of $7.500 on the projected income.

Whilst income figure increased it should be noted that only 13% of that income is generated from sources outside the clubs. This is an area we would like to see increased in future years. Total Expenditure figure increased to $174,691 which was an increase of 25,513 from 2013. $15,332 of this increase was from the Board’s investment strategy whilst the leagues season launch was at a cost of $2,024. High Affiliation Fees continue to be a burden on all clubs with a levy of $4,500 per club and $1,300 per team applied. The team fee covers the leagues operating costs, whilst the club fee covers the following fixed costs: Football Operations Manager Costs $33,372.00 Treasurer and Football Record Editor Costs $10,000.00 Office Rent - Morisset $ 5,178.00 BDAFL Umpires Coach $ 4,000.00 Umpires Training Venue $ 1,127.00 $53,677.00 The Board is mindful of the high costs, however in reality the only options to reduce the cost on the clubs is to reduce the above costs or attract additional income. Increased sponsorship is a step in the right direction whilst unsuccessful approaches have been made to AFL NSW/ACT to assist subsidise the Football Operations manager costs as well as eliminating the rent costs. AFL NSW/ACT’s tangible contribution to the BDAFL in the last financial year included $1,000 towards hosting the Representative Fixture and the provision of 25 footballs. The Board are well aware that other leagues in the state receive significantly more funding than this and are continually making representation to AFL NSW/ACT in order to receive a fairer deal. Whilst the cost to clubs is high, the BDAFL Board continued to provide clubs with a number of programs/subsidies which resulted in the following funds being returned to clubs: Club of the Year program $ 4,940.00 Club Championship Prizes $ 973.00 Club Medical Kit Subsidy $ 900.00 Club Training Subsidy $ 3,072.00 Football Subsidy ($10 per ball) $ 920.00 $ 10,805.00 All clubs paid their invoices within the approved repayment term and there were no outstanding receivables at the end of the financial year. I would like to thank all the clubs for their diligence in ensuring all accounts were paid on time. Accounts payables totalled $2,039.00 and related to two invoices received after 30 September. These accounts have now been paid. Stock on Hand total $10,123 which relate to varying types of footballs on hand. As at 30 September 2014 the BDAFL had cash reserves of $60,786 which is considered satisfactory to conduct their operations. All taxation obligations have been met and accounts have been audited. Garry Burkinshaw BDAFL Treasurer

BDAFL UMPIRE COACH’S REPORT

This season has been a building process on the foundation

established last year.

The training venues were changed this year, training on Tuesdays at

Bateau Bay and Wednesday at No.1 Sportsground. – with great

results - numbers increased dramatically with the new locations and

umpires of all disciplines attended training on regular basis, as well as

junior umpires.

Throughout the season match day observations have been done by Ashley Borg and myself–

both on and off the field – and provided feedback to the umpires regarding their

performances. The advent of Bar TV has also given the opportunity for feedback to the

umpires as well. I’m pleased to say that the feedback was taken on board and the umpires

have worked really hard to make the suggested improvements.

I have worked with Carl Fletcher the NSW Umpire Development Co-ordinator for our region

and Roy Reichert, Hunter Coast Umpire Manager to help me identify promising junior umpires

who would be able to make the transition to senior football - this is an ongoing programme

This past season we have transitioned 3 junior umpires who ran as Boundary Umpires last

year to Field Umpires this year, and we have run 5 new Regional Squad umpires as well, and

have regained 4 Umpires who were thought to be lost to umpiring. Numbers are steadily

building in all disciplines.

We’ve recruited 8 boundary umpires from the junior groups, who I would hope will make the

transition to field umpires when they have more experience – in the next season or two.

We have also recruited 2 new goal umpires and 2 new field umpires.

. We’ve also had some very good Representative game appointments this year:

BDAFL Rep Game v Sydney AFL – Lachie Head, Roger Crowhurst, Paul Best, Cooper

Williams and Cameron James.

TAC Cup – NSW Rams v Calder Cannons – Lachie Head

NSW Combined High Schools Football Championships – Wagga Wagga – Stephen

Blume

Academy Series – Josh Duffy-Sykes.

School Sport Australian Football Championships – Sydney – Stephen Blume, Cooper

Williams.

National Kickstart Championships – Coffs Harbour – Joe O’Brien and Jake Bateman

Under 13/14 Joss State Zone Trials– Albury – Jake Bateman

I thank the NCCUA for their support and assistance during the season – it’s been invaluable.

I’d like to thank the Clubs for their support this past season although I did not receive a lot of

formal feedback from the Clubs during the season – there was informal feedback as well and

on all levels what I did receive was very constructive.

BAR TV 2014 saw the Black Diamond AFL Match of the Week broadcast live over the internet. A company known as BarTV, approached the BDAFL about getting matches covered and then shown on replay over the internet and through selected clubs and hotels through the region. BarTV is similar to Sky Channel in which hotels and clubs have the opportunity to subscribe to, and contains content that is predominantly grassroots sports not covered by normal television networks, as well as Pub Trivia. Currently approx 50 venues subscribe to BarTV across the Hunter and Illawarra regions. They are also expanding into the Sydney market. BDAFL matches were shown a minimum of four times during the week across the network as well as when requested by the venue. Whilst this was seen as an excellent opportunity, the discussion got around to Live streaming the Black Diamond Cup Match of the Week. Viewers would be able to watch the matches live by clicking on a link on either the BDAFL, BarTV or Newcastle Herald Website. In addition to this they could also watch a replay of the match at a later date via the website, or at those clubs and pubs who subscribe to BarTV. A highlights package (approx 9 minutes) compiled by BarTV was also able to viewed through social media. A highlight during the year was when two matches involving Warners Bay were shown live into the Balckbutt Hotel, who are the major sponsors of Warners Bay and also a BarTV subscriber. The clubs had the opportunity to display their clubs logo’s during the quarter breaks, whilst their major sponsors logo was shown each time they kicked a goal. The BDAFL sponsors logo’s were also shown and live reads were also included in the broadcast. The Black Diamond Cup Match of the Week schedule was structured to not only get the best matches shown but also to ensure that all clubs had equal opportunity to have their matches broadcast. The Match of the Week had commentary from Garry Burkinshaw and Ivan Sprydz with a couple of guest commentators from time to time. Rustica Restaurant provided a meal voucher to the player judged Best on Ground. All clubs also had the opportunity to get additional matches covered albeit to be shown on replay. The cost of the Match of the Week was $605, which the clubs contributed $330 and the BDAFL subsidised $275. Matches which were not shown live cost $440 of which the clubs paid 50% and the BDAFL 50%. At the conclusion of the match, both clubs, the BDAFL and umpires received a copy of the match on a USB stick. Overall, we covered 24 matches live and a further 6 matches on replay. The Elliott Davey Medal Presentation Night was also broadcast live. This initiative is arguably the biggest advancement in the leagues history and moving forward will give the league, clubs, players and umpires greater exposure which in turn will hopefully attract additional revenue and opportunities. Stats (as provided by BarTV) It is estimated that there were approximately 29,805 views of BDAFL vision in 2014 made up as follows:

Live Matches On You Tube (inc Replays) 10,981 Average viewing time 19mins

Highlights Packages on You Tube 6,824 Average viewing time 4 ½ mins

BarTV venues 12,000

During the year there were active viewers in 23 countries with the top 6 being; Australia, United Kingdom, Thailand, USA, Italy & New Zealand. Viewers were 87% male with the most popular age group being 18-34 with 71% viewers.

REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL

In 2014 Representative Football again played an important role in the Black Diamond AFL. The senior side were scheduled to play AFL Sydney Development squad at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground on the June long weekend whilst a Development side played the Sydney Swans Academy at Lakeside Oval in Sydney on 8 March 2014. Seniors

BDAFL played AFL Sydney Development Squad at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground. Chris Bishop was appointed as Coach with Courtney Knight his assistant, and Football Operations Manager, Garry Burkinshaw joining them as Chairman of Selectors and also Team Manager. The program was reduced to just a one week commitment from the players with training on Tuesday night at No 1 Sportsground and Thursday night at Bateau Bay Sporting Facility. The reduced program is well received by the players and has certainly improved player commitment. In the lead up to the program both coaches spoke to most players in contention advising them of the program, in addition to this, matches involving all clubs were watched by the selectors. A training squad of 24 players were selected for the match with only five players not considered for selection, two through prior commitments, two were injured and the other had to work. From the 24 players selected four players had to withdraw either through injury or university study..An additional three players were added to the squad following these withdrawals. From the remaining 23 players the commitment was fantastic with 18 attending training on Tuesday and 21 on the Thursday. Following training on the Thursday night the players had pizza for dinner at the ground and they were also presented with their playing gear (except jumpers) and polo shirt. Courtney Knight and Liam Gibson were named as captains with Jayson Van Dam the vice captain. These three gentlemen were excellent leaders both on and off the field. There were nine debutants in the selected side, whilst Gibson was selected for a record tenth time which is a fantastic achievement. Jason Bradley from Bodyworx Physio was appointed as the Physio for the team and he attended the training session in Newcastle as well as the match. Sean Riedel was also appointed as trainer for a tenth year, another fantastic achievement and one that is well appreciated. Sean attended both training sessions as well as the match. The professionalism shown by these two gentlemen was well received by the players and they ensured that all players were well treated and returned to their club in good fitness. Thanks also to Matt Enright who volunteered to be runner for the match. The players arrived at the ground early in preparation for the match. Subway sandwiches, fruit, muesli bars, powerade and water were provided for the players upon their arrival. The players were presented with their playing jumpers by Chris Bishop at the ground. The players had to return the jumpers after the match however were provided with an alternate jumper to keep. After heavy rain on Friday threatened the match the weather conditions for the match were ideal and the ground was in excellent condition. Unfortunately the crowd in attendance was not at the level it should have been.

The match was broadcast live over the internet courtesy of BarTV, After AFL Sydney dominated the match early, the BDAFL eventually took control and won by 48 points (see match report). Following the match, a function was held at the ground for both teams and officials which included a BBQ and refreshments. Courtney Knight and Liam Gibson were presented with the Robert Hughes Memorial Shield as the winning team (pictured previous page), whilst Tom Head was presented with a pewter having been named the Best player for the BDAFL (pictured right with Coach Chris Bishop). Following the function the players and their partners progressed to “The Edward” to continue the celebrations and where the match ball (signed by the players) was presented to Liam Gibson. Thanks goes to Singleton who ran the canteen and bar for the day and also catered for the after match function. They also provided volunteers to act as water carriers for both teams, and to do the scoreboard. Thanks to Newcastle City for the use of their equipment and the hall for the day. Overall, the Representative Program was considered a success not only with the result but also the commitment and passion shown by all those who participated. It is important that competitive and varied representative fixtures are programmed each year (alternate home and away) to ensure that the best players in our competition are the opportunity to challenge themselves against the best players from other leagues. Thanks to Chris and Courtney for their enthusiasm and professionalism and also to the players, support staff and their families.

Coaches Report - Seniors

The Black Diamond AFL Representative Side competed for the Robert Hughes Memorial

Trophy against AFL Sydney Development Squad on 7 June 2014 at Newcastle’s Number 1

Sports Ground. The Black Diamond side were convincingly triumphant with a 48 point victory.

The side was coached by Chris Bishop, Courtney Knight (Assistant Coach), Garry

Burkinshaw (Team Manager and Chairman of Selectors), Jason Bradley (Team

Physiotherapist) and Sean Riddell (Trainer). Co-captains for the side were Liam Gibson and

Courtney Knight.

The Representative Program included a two session preparation in the week leading up to the

match, of which was overwhelmingly supported by all players and officials selected. After the

Tuesday session at Newcastle’s Number 1 Sports Ground, the side was announced after the

Thursday session at Bateau Bay Sporting Complex followed by gear presentation and a meal

at the ground. The side selected was one of the strongest in the history of the Black Diamond

AFL.

An initial squad of 26 players, including 9 debutants, were selected based on a balance of

youth, experience, physical ability and skill.

The game day preparation was professional and well supported by the players and coaching

staff.

The match was played at a high pace. The early stages of the game were dominated by AFL

Sydney’s outside run and skill, resulting in a five goal deficit, before the Black Diamond

kicked their first goal through Thomas Head. AFL Sydney went into the first break 23 points in

front.

19

The second quarter saw the Black Diamond use the breeze to assert some ascendency, and

peg the gap back to just 8 points.

After half time, the Black Diamond continued their second quarter dominance kicking 5 goals

straight to convert a first half deficit into a 3 quarter time lead of 27 points.

AFL Sydney pushed back within 15 points mid-way through the last quarter, however back to

back goals to the Black Diamond at that point put the game beyond doubt. Three further late

goals pushed the game out to a 48 point margin.

The win was a terrific display of passion and commitment from the Black Diamond side, of

which show cased a high standard of football and arguably one of the best performances by a

Black Diamond side.

Best players for the Black Diamond included Thomas Head (awarded Best Player), Simon

O’Brien, Jacob Dawes, James Webster, Peter Van Dam and Andrew Willmott.

Goals were spread between Thomas Head 4, Liam Gibson 2, Jay Lewis 2, Mitchell Betson 2,

Simon O’Brien, Courtney Knight, Blake Erickson, Zac Metcalfe and Nathan Vaisey.

Following the match an official function was held in the Number 1 Sports Ground Club

Rooms, including the presentation of best player’s awards and the Robert Hughes Memorial

Trophy. Following the after match function a private function was held at The Edward for

Black Diamond players, officials and their families.

The 2014 Representative program was a remarkable success, largely due to the thorough

professional preparation undertaken by Garry Burkinshaw and the Black Diamond Board.

Chris Bishop and Courtney Knight

Match Report

Black Diamond AFL (BDAFL) retained the "Robert Hughes Memorial" trophy with a strong 17.11.113 to 10.5.65 win over AFL Sydney Under 23's side at No 1 Sportsground today.

The home side were made to work hard for the win having to overcome a half time deficit before dominating the game in the second half..

Fielding arguably their strongest representative team the BDAFL were shocked by the high tempo start from AFL Sydney and it was the visitors who got the first goal on the board courtesy of Dominic Killworth.

Slick ball movement and excellent overlap running saw the visitors kick the next four goals, including a long bomb from Wayde Blackburne and they opened up a 27 point lead before Tom Head was able to kick their first goal after a strong mark. The introduction of Simon O'Brien into the midfield gave the BDAFL some spark, whilst Luke Price was making an impact up forward.

BDAFL captain, Liam Gibson was able to make it back to back goals for the home side, however a goal just before the siren by Ted Widmer, saw AFL Sydney go into the first break with a well deserved 23 point lead.

A downside for the BDAFL in the first quarter was the hip injury suffered to key forward, James Polglase which saw him leave the ground, and not return.

BDAFL coach, Chris Bishop was disappointed with his troops work rate and intensity and was very critical of their turnovers.

The BDAFL lifted their intensity after the break and Head continued to be a thorn in AFL Sydney's defence but unfortunately his kicking for goal was astray. It took nine minutes for the first goal of the term and it was courtesy of a great snap from Jay Lewis. From the next centre bounce good ruck work from Jacob Dawes and slick hands from James Webster saw Lewis goal from inside the centre square and the home side were up and running.

Page 20: Black Diamond AFL Inc 14th Annual Report BLACK DIAMOND ... BD… · Black Diamond AFL Inc 2014 Annual Report 6 FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORT Preparation for the 2015 season

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2014 Annual Report

20

With the aid of the strong breeze the BDAFL had almost all the play in their forward 50 and when Gibson kicked his second the margin had been reduced to just three points.

A strong mark and goal against the run of play by Evan Smith (his second for the game) gave the visitors some relieve but a strong mark and goal from Peter Van Dam kept the BDAFL in touch. A great piece of roving and excellent snap on goal from Jordan Pidgeon saw AFL Sydney enter the half time break with a eight point advantage.

The BDAFL's defence had taken control of the game with Jayson Van Dam and Zac Metcalfe controlling the dangerous AFL Sydney forwards in Hayden Washington and Smith, and Matt Bailey and Andrew Willmot providing the run coach Bishop was looking for.

A concern for AFL Sydney coach, Chris Hughes was the impact the BDAFL big men, in particular Head and Dawes were having on the game. Head in particular was damaging with strong marks inside the forward 50, only for his kicking to let him down.

The third quarter was the pivotal quarter of this contest as AFL Sydney kicking with the wind were unable to register a goal, whilst the BDAFL were able to kick five goals into the wind to turn a halftime deficit into a 21 point three quarter time lead.

The first ten minutes of the quarter was a torrid affair as both teams put away the flair and engaged themselves in the battle. It was the BDAFL who were able to get the break courtesy of Mitch Betson who was able to convert after two strong marks, before young Nathan Vaisey was able to convert via a snap.

AFL Sydney were unable to penetrate the BDAFL defence, led by Jono Gourlay who was playing as a loose man due to the visitors need to double team Head in an effort to nullify his dominance.

Two late goals to the BDAFL, including a rare major from Metcalfe saw them establish an important three quarter time advantage.

Both coaches urged the troops for one last battle and both teams responded looking for that important first goal, and that came to the BDAFL via an excellent piece of roving and snap from O'Brien.

With a 27 point lead and kicking with the wind, the crowd were expecting the BDAFL to run away with the game however the young AFL Sydney side would not lie down. With St George youngster, Harrison Green, easily their best player leading the way they kicked two quick goals courtesy of a Matt Young snap and a Levi Sands long bomb to reduce the margin to just 15 points, and it was game on again.

It took a great left forward snap from the boundary by prolific BDAFL goal kicker, Courtney Knight to give them the ascendancy again and when Peter Van Dam converted from a free kick before the ball was returned to the centre, the match was in the bag for the BDAFL.

Late goals to Blake Erickson and Head (his fourth, should have been eight) saw the final margin at 48 points.

Head was easily the Best player on the ground and he received great support from O'Brien, Dawes and Webster.

For AFL Sydney, Harrison Green was outstanding, whilst Nathan Bosschieter, Dave Johnson and Smith also had strong games.

The victory was just reward for the effort put in throughout the representative program by the players under the expert tutelage of coaches Chris Bishop and Courtney Knight.

Development Squad

An approach was made by Sydney Swans Academy Manager, Chris Smith for a Black Diamond AFL Development Squad (BDAFL) to play the Sydney Swans Academy in a pre-season match. The match would give the Swans a solid hit out prior to the TAC trials against the GWS Giants Academy and for the BDAFL it would also give the young players an opportunity to test themselves against the best youngsters in the Sydney Swans Zones. Smith also mentioned that it was an opportunity for those players who did well to be considered for selection in the Sydney Swans NEAFL side as a top up player during the year. Chris Bishop and Courtney knight were appointed as Coaches, with Football Operations Manager, Garry Burkinshaw joining them as Chairman of Selectors and also Team Manager. Given that the match was to be played in pre-season a training program and selection criteria were established. An initial training squad was selected in January with the players advised that to eligible for selection in the final squad they must have completed the full pre-season training with their club. The club coaches also had the opportunity to put forward players who they considered worthy of inclusion in the squad. The age restriction on the squad was 21 years and under, whilst we were also able to include a couple of overage players. The initial training squad consisted of 48 players however this was reduced through injuries and unavailabilities to 32. Two training sessions were scheduled for Wednesday evenings at Tulkaba Park, whilst a practice match against North Shore was scheduled on the Saturday, prior to the match at Nelson Bay.Unfortunately North Shore were unable to get the numbers and as such the match did not proceed. A training session was still held. The commitment from the majority of the players was excellent with in excess of 20 players at each sessions. The squad was reduced to 28 prior to the last training session with the final team of 24 players announced. James Webster was named as captain with Jay Lewis and Blake Erickson as vice captains. At the last training session the players were presented with a polo shirt which was to be worn to the match with black sports shorts and runners. The players were presented with their playing gear on matchday, they were able to keep their shorts and socks however had to return their playing jumper. Jason Bradley from Bodyworx Physio was appointed as the Physio for the team whilst Riedel was also appointed as trainer. Jayson Van Dam also assisted the coaching staff with Courtney Knight acting as runner. The players travelled to and from Sydney on the day of the match courtesy of Port Stephens Coaches. The match commenced at 3pm in quite hot weather conditions which suited the Sydney Swans side, who had obviously undertaken a more stringent pre-season program. Whilst the BDAFL competed very well their inability to convert their opportunities saw the Swans side win quite comfortable.(see match report) There were a number of promising performances by BDAFL players and they were acknowledged at the Academy briefing following the match.

Page 23: Black Diamond AFL Inc 14th Annual Report BLACK DIAMOND ... BD… · Black Diamond AFL Inc 2014 Annual Report 6 FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORT Preparation for the 2015 season

23

The match proved to be a great learning for the players and in particular the level of play/fitness that is required to reach the next level. If the fixture is to continue a longer training period would be required especially given the timing of the match. Overall there were many benefits to come out of the fixture with the only disappointment being the Swans failing to fulfil their promise of providing some BDAFL players with the opportunity to play for their NEAFL side during the year. Once again thanks to Chris and Courtney for their enthusiasm and professionalism and also to the players and support staff. Match Report

Sydney Swans Academy showed the benefits off a strong pre-season campaign by proving too strong for the BDAFL Development Rep Side winning, 14.10.94 to 2.2.14 at Lakeside Oval today.

In hot conditions the Swans were able to capitalise on BDAFL turnovers, which were many, by using their superior speed and fitness to create a number of scoring opportunities.

The game started in an even fashion with the BDAFL's tackling pressure reducing the talented Swans players time and space and a goal to Killarney Vale's Alex Bailey after a strong mark, levelled the scores, before three late goals saw the Swans lead by 20 points at half time.

Coach, Chris Bishop asked his players to respect the football more and whilst they continued to pressure the Swans players into mistakes, the inability of the BDAFL players to find a forward target saw them go into half time trailing by 39 points.

The third quarter was all the Swans with former Cardiff player, Isaac Heeney showing why he is regarded as the best junior player in state and a strong chance to be drafted at the end of the year, by not only picking up numerous possessions but also kicking three goals for the term. Brother Beau Heeney was not to be outdone and was also a solid contributor for the BDAFL.

Trailing by 71 points at three quarter, Bishop asked his players for a big last quarter and the players responded with their best quarter for the game. A goal, following a mark from Warners Bay's Matthew Spinks after good team play was the highlight of the term although with a bit of luck the BDAFL could have kicked a number of other goals. Only a late goal to the Swans prevented the BDAFL from winning the final quarter.

In the end the Swans ended up winning by 80 points, a margin which was not a fair reflection of the match.

For the BDAFL players it was an excellent experience and one they should take plenty from, in particular the fitness and skill levels required to reach the next level.

The players and coaches are already planning for next years fixture.

For the BDAFL, captain James Webster was a standout winning numerous possessions across the ground, although his disposal at times let him down. Jono Gourlay showed what a talented player he his is and what a pick up he will be for Terrigal Avoca by being the dominant ruckmen on the ground and also taking a number of telling marks.

Cardiff's Zac Metcalf and Terrigal Avoca's Josh Polglase were solid in defence, whilst Luke Price from Nelson Bay was also excellent in the unusual role for him of back pocket.

Beau Heeney also impressed with his aggression whilst Blake Erickson of Nelson Bay also showed touches of class.

BDAFL YOUNGSTERS CONTINUE TO SHINE

A number of BDAFL youngsters also made an impact away from the BDAFL in 2014. Isaac Heeney continued to be the standout, playing a starring role for the AIS Academy in their match against Collingwood’s VFL side as well as on their tour through Europe. He also captained NSW/ACT to victory in the NAB National Under 18’s Championships and in doing so winning the Harrison Medal as the Best & Fairest player in that competition and also gaining ”All Australian” selection. Isaac also played for NSW/ACT in their return to the TAC Cup competition and gained selection in the TAC Cup Team of the Year, despite playing just five matches. He also played six matches for the Sydney Swans Reserves including the NEAFL Grand Final, which the Swans lost by two points. No only is Isaac a talented player but also a well rounded young man, who never forgets where he came from as was illustrated one Saturday in April, when just a couple of days after getting off the plane from Europe, Isaac was club umpiring a 2

nd Division game for Cardiff.

We look to Isaac beginning his AFL career next year with the Sydney Swans. Nelson Bay’s Nathan Vaisey also represented NSW/ACT in the TAC Cup as well as the Sydney Swans Reserves. Vaisey’s team mate from Nelson Bay, Jayden Rymer also made his TAC Cup debut during the year. Rymer has also impressed the Swans as they have arranged for him to be relocated to Sydney next year to finish his schooling and also play for the Swans Reserve grade team when not playing for NSW/ACT. This is a great opportunity for Jayden and we wish him well. Singleton’s, Vahid Roser also made the move to Sydney this year and he too played for NSW/ACT in the TAC Cup as well as playing eight games for Swans Reserve Grade team.

FINALS

The 2014 BDAFL competitions all used a final four final system with finals played over three weeks. All finals were scheduled for No1 Sportsground to maximise the gate takings opportunity. In another change, both Black Diamond Cup Semi Finals and the 2

nd Division 2

nd Semi Final

were played on the first Saturday of the finals with both 1st Division Semi Finals and the 2

nd

Division 1st Semi Final played on the first Sunday.

The idea of this was to try and gain greater crowds and increased media exposure. I believe it worked on both accounts and was well received by supporters and the clubs. Wet weather played havoc with all finals and resulted in the Sunday Semi Finals and the Preliminary Finals having to be transferred to Bateau Bay Sporting Facility. Heavy Overnight rain also resulted in Newcastle Council deeming on the morning of the Grand Finals that No 1 Sportsground was unfit for play, however as it was our Grand Final they gave us the option to play as long as we took responsibility for the risk management and also covered any expenses should the ground be damaged. Left with little option we accepted those terms and the Grand Finals went ahead. Good weather ensured there were no issues with the ground. Despite the wet weather the matches transferred to Bateau Bay Sporting facility were played in dry conditions, which is an example as to the quality of the surface. The only issue with Bateau Bay is the inability to being able to charge a gate and this is an issue that the league will take up with Wyong Council in the off-season. Being unable to charge a gate for one semi final and the preliminary final had an impact on the BDAFL’s bottom line at the end of the year. For the second year running Lake Macquarie operated the canteen and Cardiff the bar. These appointments were made without the usual tendering as a reward for those two clubs filling these roles last year at the BDAFL’s request following no club tendering for them. These functions will again be offered to all clubs in 2015. Security was provided for all finals by Wilson security, with one for all finals except for the Grand Final which there were four. The Cardiff were required to pay for the security for the Grand Final with the BDAFL and Cardiff sharing the cost for security at the Semi Finals and Preliminary Final. The Lions Club of Newcastle were approached to provide volunteers to act as gatekeepers and also parking marshalls for the finals. They agreed to assist and a donation of $3,350.00 was agreed to as recognition of their support. With two finals transferred from No 1 Sportsground and the lack of Lions Club Volunteers to fulfil all roles satisfactorily the donation was reduced to $1,750.00, after consultation between the BDAFL and Newcastle Lions club.

Admission charges for the final series remained the same at the Newcastle finals. Adults $10, aged pensioners $5, Children under 16 free. Parking for Netball was $5 per car (for the minor finals only) with no discount for the Grand Final. The reason for the no discount was to control the number of cars within No 1 Sportsground given that the Netball Grand Final clashed with the BDAFL Grand Final. Council also opened up an additional carpark to cater for the netballers. Football Records were provided free of charge for all finals. The crowds for the finals were reasonable given the inclement weather. The fact that the Preliminary Finals and Grand Finals clashed with Sydney Swans home matches, including a final no doubt had a profound impact on the crowd numbers. Grand Final day was an excellent event with the leagues logo painted on the ground. Claire Sheather from the Central Coast performed an excellent rendition of the National Anthem prior to the Black Diamond Cup match. Presentations were conducted on a stage with the President of the Premiership team presenting the premiership medallions and Premiership trophy. We were pleased that BDAFL Life Member, Gary McBain was on hand to present the McBain Medal to the player adjudged Best on Ground in the Black Diamond Cup Grand Final, Jayson Van Dam from Terrigal Avoca. Elite Sport Images were engaged to take the team photo’s as well as action shots throughout the day. Copies of the photo’s were provided to the BDAFL with photo’s displayed on their website for the public to view and purchase if they wish. All Black Diamond Cup finals as well as the 1

st & 2

nd Division Grand Finals were broadcast

live. Grand Finals Report The Terrigal Avoca Panthers are the 2014 Wilson Security Black Diamond Cup premiers after defeating the Killarney Vale Bombers, 17.12.114 to 8.11.59 at No 1 Sportsground Newcastle. In a tight opening quarter both teams played high intensity football, with each team only kicking one goal each by quarter time. Terrigal Avoca led by one point at the first break. The second quarter saw the Panthers kick the first goal through Mitch Betson, however Killarney Vale forward Daniel Lloyd kicked two quick goals to give the Bombers an unlikely lead. From there the Panthers switched on and started to gain the ascendancy in the game by kicking away with three more goals in the quarter. Terrigal Avoca had established an 18 point lead at half time. The third quarter is recognised as the Premiership quarter and it proved so for the Panthers as they kicked six goals to two, with James Polglase kicking two of his five goals for the game leading all scorers. By three quarter time, Terrigal Avoca had one hand on the Premiership Cup leading by 41 points. The Bombers never gave up and when Jackson Ireland kicked the first two goals of the quarter, an unlikely comeback was on the cards, however the Panthers again kicked away lead gallantly by best on ground Jayson Van Dam. The Panthers again kicked six goals to the Bombers two and celebrations began amongst the Panthers supporters. The 55 point win gave Terrigal Avoca their second Premiership in three years. Van Dam was awarded the Gary McBain Medal as the Best player on the ground. He was well supported by James Polglase, Alastair Richardson and Jarred Flint whilst for Killarney Vale, their captain Brendan Lewis was outstanding and he received good support from Sean Sinclair, Rick White and Jackson Ireland whilst Daniel Lloyd was dangerous up forward finishing with three goals.

In other games, Wyong Lakes claimed the 1st Division Premiership by beating Newcastle City by 20 points in a classic, open Grand Final with captain Tim Hillman being awarded the Best on Ground Medal Newcastle City won their second successive 2nd Division Premiership when they accounted for Terrigal Avoca by 17 points with Tim Wong being adjudged the Best player on the ground.

CLUB FIELD UMPIRES

2014 saw the continuation of the Club Field Umpire Program CFUP).

The program involved the following: - For all matches where two accredited umpires were not appointed, each club was required

to provide a club umpire. This occurred on almost all occasions for both 1st & 2

nd Division

matches - To become a Registered Club Field Umpire the club umpire needed to complete a

registration form as well as a simple Club Umpire on-line training session. - Club umpires were required to wear orange/charcoal shirts (supplied by the league), black

socks and black shorts. - A minimum of two umpires required for any game to commence. During the year the club umpires were invited to attend the umpires coaching sessions run by Chris Burrows. Unfortunately these were not as well attended as we would have liked. In 2014, there were 43 club umpires who officiated at least one match.

ELLIOTT DAVEY MEDAL PRESENTATION NIGHT Over 220 people attended the Black Diamond AFL Elliott Davey Medal Presentation Night which was held at Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club. Hosted by Steve Allan, the night recognised the achievements of individuals, volunteers and clubs who excelled during the 2014 season. The night included representatives from all clubs, who all were granted eight tickets per team as part of their affiliation fee. Representatives from the Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association were also in attendance. BDAFL invited guests in attendance included representatives from sponsors/partners Wilson Security, Newcastle Herald, BLK, Eclipse Media Events & PR and Kooindah Waters, AFL NSW/ACT Representatives including State Operating & Major Projects Manager - NSW/ACT, Joseph La Posta, BDAFL Life Members as well as Ian Granland, Chris Arnold and Maurice Goolagong who were able to present awards which carry their name. The evening commenced in the Quarterdeck Room for complimentary pre-dinner drinks and canapés, unfortunately the inclement weather did not allow the guests to enjoy the magnificent waterfront views. The guests then took their seats in the Spinnaker Auditorium where they were served a two course meal with drinks available at the bar. The night included video highlights of the season as well as individual highlights for those individual award winners. A montage of photos were also shown. In another first, the night was broadcast live over the internet courtesy of BarTV with the coverage including interviews during the night. The viewing numbers and related feedback indicated that the coverage was a success. Terigal Avoca, midfielder, James Webster capped off a fantastic season by taking out his second successive Elliott Davey Medal. Maitland’s midfielder, Jim Taranto took out the Granland Medal as the Best and Fairest player in 1

st Division with the 2

ELLIOTT DAVEY MEDALLIST

Terrigal Avoca Panthers star midfielder, James Webster became the third player to win back-to-back Elliott Davey Medals as the Best & Fairest players in the Black Diamond Cup competition after claiming the 2014 medal at a gala function at Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club. Webster joins Newcastle City’s Jason Coulloupas (2003-2004) and Killarney Vale’s Clinton Austerberry (2005-2006) as players who have back-to-back medals, whilst Terrigal Avoca’s Angus Darling has also won two Elliott Davey Medals winning the award in 2006 and 2009. After coming from behind to win the medal narrowly in 2013, Webster took control of the 2014 count from the outset after claiming best on ground honours in the Panthers Round 1 win over Newcastle City. He was headed briefly in Round 3 however by Round 12 he had polled 21 votes and opened up a six vote lead. Webster only polled one vote in the final five rounds however his 22 votes was enough to win by 5 votes from Cardiff midfielder, Simon O’Brien with Killarney Vale star Rick White a further 4 votes away in third place. Webster’s 22 votes included 6 best on grounds, including 5 in the first 9 rounds and was the most polled by a winner since Darling’s win in 2009 with 30 votes. The 22 year old has been a standout player in the competition after joining Terrigal Avoca last year after stints as a rookie with Essendon and also with Redlands in the North Eastern AFL state league competition. In addition to performing well with Terrigal Avoca, Webster was an integral part of the BDAFL representative side in their win over AFL Sydney Development squad.

2014 BDAFL RISING STAR Nelson Bay young gun, Jayden Rymer has capped of a great year by being named the 2014 BDAFL Rising Star. Rymer had to withstand a strong challenge from Newcastle City youngster, Conor Haswell to claim the award. The 16 year old, in his debut season played a key role in helping Nelson Bay push for a finals berth in their return year in the Wilson Security Black Diamond Cup competition. His ability to play both in the midfield and up forward made him a difficult match up for opposition coaches. In addition to the above Jayden also represented the Black Diamond AFL in their victory over the AFL Sydney Development Squad and also made his debut for the NSW/ACT Under 18's TAC Cup side. Rymer has been a member of the Sydney Swans Academy for a number of years and has had a decorated junior career. When collecting his award Rymer also advised the audience that he has been invited by the Sydney Swans to relocate to Sydney next year and spend the season training with the Swans and playing for their Reserves team. He will also complete his schooling in Sydney and stay with a host family. This is a similar path undertaken this season by Isaac Heeney. Full Voting

2014 MOST OUTSTANDING YOUNG FOOTBALLER Terrigal Avoca’s gun midfielder, Kurt Fleming has taken out the 2014 BDAFL Most Outstanding Young Footballer Award. Fleming had a delayed start to the season due to injury however once he regained fitness he returned to the status as one of the most damaging running midfielders in the competition. Fleming had to overcome a strong list of contenders which certainly illustrates the young talent we currently have in the BDAFL. Full Votes

APPROVED SUPPLIERS Following the unsatisfactory performance of Cougar Sportswear as the league’s apparel supplier in 2013,the BDAFL lobbied AFL NSW/ACT for the abolishment of the “Approved Supplier’ program. AFL NSW/ACT in their wisdom decided to retain the program with a new list of suppliers retained. With this the Board decided to continue with the arrangement of all clubs requiring to purchase their on-field apparel through the league. The benefit of this arrangement is: - Monitoring the apparel to ensure that it meets the BDAFL By-Laws; - Reducing the workload on club volunteers; - Obtaining a better financial return for the league, and subsequently the clubs. To accommodate this, the Board approached all six approved suppliers to provide a tender for the BDAFL’s business. A tender was received from all suppliers and after much discussion BLK were awarded the tender based on: - Competitive pricing - Attractive benefits - Well known brand The relationship with BLK got off to a rocky start with apparel not being received within the agreed time. Most of this was BLK’s fault but some of it was also the clubs fault for not meeting the cut-off times. BLK reacted to our dissatisfaction by retrenching our account manager and replacing him with an existing manager. Following this change the service has improved markedly and compensation was received for those clubs affected by the delay in receiving their apparel. In 2014, the retail purchases for apparel was $45,797. The BDAFL still acknowledge that the AFL NSW/ACT Approved Supplier process is flawed and restrictive, however whilst ever the process is in place there is little we can do except ensure we get the best deal possible for the clubs and the league The BDAFL has been renewed their arrangement with BLK for a further three years on an upgraded deal. In 2014, the BDAFL again used Sherrin KB footballs, with a new football required for all Black Diamond Cup matches. A used football (defined as having not been used for more than two games previously) could be used for both First & Second Division. The clubs were required to purchase all matchday footballs through the Football Operations Manager, who in turn placed the orders through AFL NSW/ACT. AFL NSW/ACT sold the footballs for $107.00 (retails price $149.90) with the BDAFL providing a further discount of $8 per football making the price $99.00 for the clubs. AFL NSW/ACT also provided 25 footballs free of charge and we appreciate this support. All matchday footballs carried the BDAFL logo and also that of Wilson Security.

THE FOOTBALL RECORD

The production of a weekly Football Record continued in 2014. Each club were required to provide their team list with jumper numbers at the beginning of the season and requested to update throughout the season. Clubs were also required to contribute club notes each week. The notes were placed adjacent to their team list and home clubs were issued with 50 copies of the record. The Grand Final Record included a coloured cover which was provided by Target Press Printing, who also designed the cover. The publication was compiled and edited by Garry Burkinshaw who would then lodge a copy of the record with Officeworks, Gosford on Tuesday Morning for printing and collating. Once printed and collated, the A5 booklets were collected that afternoon, sorted and boxed into home club lots and couriered to the designated address of a home club official by each Friday.

Officeworks provided a 5% discount for the inclusion of an advertisement in the Record. The season’s records will be bound and kept as part of the leagues historical records. Whilst there is a reasonable effort in publishing the Football Record the end result is a tremendous vehicle for the league and clubs to push their cause and a wonderful effort for those concerned in its publication.

GRANTS, FACILITIES & QUALITY CLUB

Grants Singleton received a grant of $10,000 from the Joss Group and AFL NSW/ACT to assist purchase and install an electronic scoreboard. Facilities AFL NSW/ACT in conjunction with Federal, State and Local government continues to invest in the upgrade of facilities in our region: Newcastle No.1 Sportsground AFL NSW/ACT, Cricket NSW, the State Government and Newcastle Council committed $30,000 towards the completion of a feasibility study into upgrading Newcastle No.1 Sportsground. The upgrade would include enlargement of the playing surface, replacing the existing drainage and irrigation, upgrading the changerooms and amenities as well as the addition of an electronic scoreboard and safety netting. Following the completion of the study and a presentation to all three parties, Council submitted a grant application for $2M to complete the works. Unfortunately the application was declined, so it is back to the drawing board in relation to obtaining funding. Hylton Moore Oval Terrigal Avoca has received a grant from Gosford Council to undertake extensive renovation work to Hylton Moore Oval. These works will commence at the conclusion of the 2014 season with the works scheduled to be completed prior to the commencement of the 2015 season. Cardiff Home Ground A significant amount of work is being undertaken by AFL NSW/ACT, Lake Macquarie Council and Cardiff AFC to find Cardiff a permanent home ground. In 2014 Cardiff continued to train at Hillsborough Oval and play home matches at No 1 Sportsground, on a share basis with Newcastle City. Cardiff have been without a permanent home base since the closure of Maneela Park in 2005. They played out of Bill Elliott Oval from 2006 – 2012. A number of venues have been discussed with a new facility a Cameron Park a possibility, however if successful this will not be available until 2017. The club should have a clearer picture on their future venue by the end of 2014

QUALITY LEAGUE PROGRAM

The BDAFL once again was involved in the AFL NSW/ACT Quality League Management Framework program which requires the league to be measured against a number of benchmarks, aimed at improving the way leagues are governed. Most senior and junior leagues across the state are involved in the program. In 2014 the BDAFL were assessed by AFL at 94% (91.67% in 2013) which resulted in a payment of $2,928.00 by AFL NSW/ACT.
