Stages in the evolution of these instruments
Classical Antiqui ty
Even though we possess visual depic tions and even a few rare

cons tituted Class ical ant iquity, this Guid e to historica l instruments
will nol co ncem itself wilh such acco unts. Our overr iding reason for
lh is is of course - and with ancicnt Greece as an ex ception - the
total abse nce of any survivi ng scores . lt is nonetheless interes ting
to stress that the few rare pieces of information tha t we do possess
allow us to confirrn the presence of basic instrum ental princ iples in
the fields of plucked string instruments, of wind instrument s made
from wood , vegetable ma tter or meta l and of percussion instrume nts;
ancient Rome eve n knew a type of hydrauli c or water organ. One of
the most importan t elements in our knowledg e of the instrument s
of Class ical Anti quity are the theore tical studies that the Oreeks
and others cleveloped, in particular the results of Pythagoras' work
co ncerning the calcu lation of the mat hematical re lations hips of the
various interval s. T his theo ry would have impor tant reper cussio ns
as far as tuning was concernecl for the entire deve lopment of the manufacture of mus ical
instrument s; thi s highly important topi c woulcl on ly finally be reso lved cluring the 19th cen tury
with a so lution that was as clisputed as it was not to be ignorecl: it was a t this time that equa l
temperam ent finally came into general use .

The Middle Ages: the est ablishment of fondamental pr inciples
The majority of the fundamenta l instrumental princip les were establishe d during the Midd le
Ages . Our problems with researc hing these instruments, however, stem from the almost tota l
lack of any surviving physical exam ples . The princ ipal sources that we have available are
represe ntations of them in miniatures, paintings, draw ings and sculptu res; ce rtain of these are
extremely precise, whil st others are not. Nonetheless, amongst the so urces ava ilable there is an
important patrimon y of popular Westernand Eastern instruments that have not grea tly evolve d
since the Middle Ages. T his is primarily the case w ith the Arabian inst ruments suc h t he ud and
the rabab , for their manufa cture today is still a lmos t idcntical to how they were made duri ng the
lime of th e Crusades; their use in Western Europe was recorde d from the Mid dle Ages onwards.

1 Bowed string instruments
General po in ts concem ing the Middl e Ages
Med iaeval iconography depicts an impressive quantity of boweclstrin g instruments. There are man y
varieties of them in relation to their shape, the number of strings, the presence or not of frets (a
thin piece of gut tieclaround the neck of the instrumen{to mark the positions of the semitones) and
whether they were supporteclon the shoulder or between the legs .
It seems clcar that such instruments were originally carved from a single piece of wood that formecl
both the back and s ides of the instrument and its neck, with the sound-board then being placecl and
most Jikely gluecl onto this body. This is the so-callcd monox ylic style of manufacture. Arabian
instrument makers discoverecl he technique of building a stringed instrument by assembling pieces
of wood that were thcn gluecl together, although it was o nly towarcls the end of the 15th century or
al the beginning of the l6th centu1y hat such a technique had entereclgcneral use, with the front and
the back of the instrumen t, the ribs, the neck and the fingerbomcl ail being assembled separatcly and
then gluccl together. Also new was the idea that such ,u1assembly could also be carricd out with tl e
help of a mouId.
There were many forms of these instruments, the most common of which initially was oval in shape .
Certain instruments hacla slight narrowing towarcls the middle of the body that slowly beca me more
pronouncecland took on the shape of a number 8; this was an announcement of how the instnnn ents
of the ncxt generation were going to look. Their number of strings varied between two and six: it is
difficu lt to detemne whcthcr they were tuned in titihs, fourths, octaves or other intervals. Ce1a in
strings were also used as drone strings: this was the case for many instrnments that had one or two
bourdon strings lying to one sidc of the fingerboarcl.

These instruments were known by severa l narnes , the bes t-known being the fidclle and the lira.
(l:1 3,19,26,35 ) They came in a vari ety of sizes a nd were held in several ways, being either
supported by the shoulcler or colla rbone, placed before the ches t and held in position by a stra p
passed arou nd the nec k, or held on a knee or between the calves . These question s of how the
instrument s of the lime were held do not , ho wever, suffice on their own to solve the puzzle of
the cvident deve lopment of str inged ins truments into 'two large fami lies d uring the l6th centu ry:
the viol and vio lin families.
The re were various other instruments that did not belong to the above familie s, amo ngst which
were the rebecs. The re bec (I, 13,19,35) is clearly the Western dcvelopm enl of the rab a b ,
an instrum ent of Arab or igin. The rebec has, nonethclcs s, abandon ed some of the esscnt ial
charac teristics of the rabab, notably its playing posi tion on the knees, its sounding -board made
from animal skin , and its mann er of shortening the string to obtain different pitches not by using
a fingerboard but by hookin g the string lighter. The rebe c's body is shaped like a half pear and
the majority of instrumen ts are provided with three strings . lt is still mentioned in organolog ica l
treatises at the beg inning of the J7th cen tury and was assoc iated with music for en tcrtainment
and dancing.
We should also mention here an instrument that is employed in a tightly defined area, the crwth
(I:15) . Welsh or Irish in orig in, i t remained in use for folk music until the 19th cent ury. Like
certaiJ1 viles , it has four main strings and two bou rdon strings. The tuning used for the crwth in
this record ing is the one still employed when the instrument is used to play folk music: G, g, C,
c, D, cl.
Mehrere Nam cn dienen zur Bezeiclrnung dicse r Instrum ente, vor allem Fi cdel und

sehr deutli chen Entwi cklung in zwei groBe Familie n (die d er Gambe und die der Geige) im 16.

The lyra viol (Il:22)
This is a typ e of viola da gamb a that was much used in England at the beginning of the 18th
century. The difference between the Lyra Viol and other vio ls was that il could change its tuning
to suit th e keys of the pieces in which it played, thu s increasing its abilities for polyphonie and
for chordal playing. The inventivene ss of its player s at that time led them to imagine at least fifty
different ways of tuning the instrument. This 'lyra -way ' style was inspired by the possib ilities
for chordal playing provid ed by the lira da gamba or lirone (see p . 39). The lyra viol was also
clescribed as being a small er version of the bass viol.
The viola bastarda (TV:3)
Il
must be adm itted that the term bastarda impart s a ce1tain air of dubiou sness to this instrument.
lt might wel l be easy to believe lhat it was merely a degenerate relation of the viola da gamba,
but this, however, is not th e case. According to Praetorius, the viola bastarda was a small-sized
bass vio l with six str1gs, in which it resembled the English lyra vio l; its tuning could also be
altered to suit the compo sition s in whic h il wa s required to play. lt was in fact mostly used for
a style of playi ng k.nown as alla bastarda , which consisted of entrusting one so lo instrument or
vo ice with a set of variations based on the different voices of a polyphonie piece. Any instrum ent
1hat played in such a style required an extc nded range, and the viola bastarda with its adjustable
tuning was one of the instrum ents best suited to this practice. The publicati on of Girolamo Dalla
Casa's l vero modo di diminuir in Venice in 1584 gives us an exac t da te for the definition of
this new role for the vio l.
Lyra viol (ll :22)
l lier handelt es sich um eine Art von Bassgambe, deren Existenz ganz spezifisch an England
gehunden ist. Das Prinz ip der Lyra viol besteht dari.n, ihre S timmung je nach den Tonart en zu

that date from the beginning of the 17th century.
The contrabas s viol
Sounding an octave Jower than the bass viol, this instrument appcarcd in Italy at the sta11of the 17th
ccntury. We may suppose t hat this is the instrument that is dcpicted in Veronese's painting of the
Weddingat Cana- its player is none otherthan the painterTttian himself The contrabass viol is also
demanded in Monteverdi 's 01.feo. t rema ined in use for a considerab le timc, rcmaining in orchestras
until the beginning of the J9th century, at which rime it came into competition with the modem
double bass. Certain traces of this prac tice s till exist in today's double basses, for somc of these
are still built with the characteristics of the viol body (Hat back
miel
viol-shaped silhouette). whlist
playcrs of the Genmm schoo l as well at others hold the bow according to the old viol techn ique.
The violone
Although this nan1e makes the rcader think of an instrument that belongs 10 the viol n family, the
violone is well and truly a mcmbe r of the viola da gamba family. lt occup ies the same position as the
double bass, but c,ui be tuned in two ways, cither in G (a ftfth lower than the bass viol) or in D (an
octave lower than the bass viol), thus matching the range of the double bass that sounds an octave
lower than notated. Nonetheless, its identity remains problematical, for it is also known that the term
violone was often used in ltaly and in other countrics to describe a bass srringcd instrument before
lhc eventual appearance of lhe violoncello. lts relationship to the violin family is therefore highly
pertinent.

The origins of the violin remain obscur e.

The difference between a viol in used by Montev erdi and one used by Tartini is much greater than
we wou ld generally think Th e prob lem in this field is that the immense majo rity of instrume nts
of the lime that have survived and that are happ ily still playable have undergon e several centuries
of transfo rmations; those that occurred during the l9th century were par ticularly far-reaching
and were carried ou t to give them a
larger sound. The p rincipa l modificatio ns at that time were
the replacement of the sound-post that had original ly been an inte gral part of the front of the
instrument by a thicker bar that was n_ow g lued into place , the lengt hen ing of the neck whilst
keepin g the or iginal scroll, the lengthening of the fingerboard in order to play higher on the
strings and the deepening of the angle of the neck to create greater tension in the strings and
thereby more power. One partic ular element of these transforma tions can be seen when we look
at thes e two violin s : the viol in on the left has
a
short fingerboard , whilst the ' modern ' viol n on
the right has a longer fingerboard .
We should note that the technique of playing what we today call the 'baroque ' violin wa s very
different from the way the modern instrumen t is played; the foremost of the se was the use of
a
particular bow, which itsclf was to undergo considerable deve lopment dur ing the 17th and
18th centuries. The viol in was pJaced on the should er or collarbone and was played without
cushion or chin rest. Th is technique was to prcva il unti l the e nd of the l8th century, if not the
beginning of the l9th century. The bow underwent an im portant modification al the end of the
l8th century, principa ly thanks to the work of the French bow-maker Franoi s-Xavi er Tourte ,
whose main invention was the inversion of the curvc of the bow, making it concave.
Finally, gut strings were used untiI the beginning of the 20th century ; the ir repla cement by metal
str ings only became gen eral afte r the end of the First World Warin 19 18
erlaubt) .
[8 .
Jh., vor allem dank der
Arbeit des Bogenbauers Franois-Xavier Tourte, dessen 1Jaupterfindung in der Um.kehr der
13ogenbiegun g lic gt, wodurch er konkav wird . SchlieBlich soli auch dara uf hinge wiesen we rden,
dass man bis ins beginnende 20 Jh . Dannsaiten verwendet hat. Erst nach dem Ers ten Weltkri eg
wurden sie allgeme in durch Metallsaiten ersetzt.

Severa sizes of viola were in use durin g the l 7th cen tury to fulfil the needs of orchestral
musicians, above ail in France where orches tra s uscd three desks of vio las - haut es-co ntre,
ta illes and qu intes (II:13). The graduai div ision of the s tring section of the orchestra into four
part s - violins I and Il , violas, ce llos/basses - causcd this situation to be simplified: a s ingle
size of viola began to co me into being, a lthoug h withou t one partic ular set of measureme nts
being laid down . Th e curren t body lcngt h of 41cm was on ly standard ised du ring the 20th

seco nd half of the 18th cent ury that it began to be em ployed as a solo instrumen t. (VIII:4)
Th e viola po mposa
The music theori st Forkel attri buted the invent ion of this instru men t to J S. Bach al the end of
the l8th cent ury. There is no proof for this, espec ially as the instrument appears in no known
work by Bach. The instru men t is ba sically a l arge-sized viola with five strings, the fifth be ing
the uppermost, whilst its ribs are higher than normal, more in proportion to the cello's. Th e

The viola da spa lla (Vl :5)
Recent research has shed lighto n a highly individual instrum ent that combined the charac teristics
or the viola pomposa and the violoncello piccolo (see below) . Supported on the shoulder with
a strap around the neck, the vio la da spalla or shoulder viola gave the possibility of performing
bass violin or cello parts on an instrument with a shorter neck and with violin fingerings. Tt
would have been used by J.S. Bach, for it now seems that the music written for violo ncello
piccolo in the cantatas was actua lly intended for the viola da spa lla. These solos are included
in the viol n parts of the orches tral material, leading us to suppose that the instrument was not
played by bass violin playe rs but by v iolinis ts. Latest discoveries appea r to confirm that the use
of this basso da braccio or 'ann bass' was ev idently extremely widcspread before the general
acceptance of the violoncello. Leopo ld Moza rt stated in his trea lise in 1756 that ' it is only
rccently that the violonce llo has been played betwce n the legs' . Thi s is yet anothcr element

T he violon cello (VII :4)
Dcspite the ques tions raised by the existence of the vio la da spa lla , the invention of the
violoncello with the fonn that we know today dates from the end of the l7th century, when a
virtuoso solo repertoire for lhe instrume nt also began to be develo ped. Up until that time bass
violins had been used that were largcr and were tuned one tone lower. The violonce llo was held
bctween the calves like the bass viol until th e begin ning of the l9th century; the invent ion of the
spike dates from that lime and is aur ibuled to the vi1tuoso Franoi s Adrien Se1vais .
