Inspiring Joy Honoring the Choice by Hearing the Voice

Maestro’sCornerMerry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I’m so glad that all of our residents and so many family members and friends were able to join us for the holiday party. What a special time to be together and have fun celebrating. Team Elliott had a fantastic program with the Grand Finale singing The Twelve Days of Christmas with audience participation.

Sonata Senior Living communities are kicking off the new year with “Get on Your Feet!” fall reduction campaign. Components of this signature campaign include additional staff training throughout the first quarter on fall prevention strategies; partnering with our home health providers to provide balance testing for our residents, as well as with Team Elliott Education who will provide residents with ongoing exercise and strengthening programming. What’s HappeningMany European countries believed that spirits, both good and evil, were active during the Twelve Days of Christmas. These spirits eventually evolved into Santa’s elves, especially under the influence of Clement C. Moore’s “The Night Before Christmas” (1779-1863) illustrated by Thomas Nast (1840-1902).

Serenades Celebrates the Season!A S.A.F.E. Way to Reduce FallsFalls have devastating consequences for older adults in terms of morbidity and mortality. For example, falls and fall-related injuries have been the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults (Stevens, 2002/2003). Fall related hip fractures account for approximately 25 percent of injury deaths among those over age 65, and 34 percent of injury death among those aged 85 or older (Peek-Asa & Zwerling, 2003).People with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia tend to be at a high risk of falling. They are more than three times more likely to fracture their hip when they fall, which leads to surgery and immobility. The rate of death following a hip fracture for those with Alzheimer’s is also increased. Thus, fall prevention for people with dementia is critical. One way to reduce falls in people with dementia is to understand why they fall. If we know what makes our loved ones more likely to fall, we can try to anticipate those needs and decrease falls.A person with dementia may experience changes that increase their risk of falling. Changes may occur in:

• Insight which affects judgment and the ability to reason.• Recognition of sensory input such as sight, sound, touch.• Communication: ability to understand and express needs.• Coordination of movement: the brain’s inability to communicate with the muscles and carry out day-to-day

functions despite having the physical ability.• Interpretation of their environment causing illusions and misperceptions, ie: depth, light intensity, color, pattern,

temperature.• Retention of information: loss of memory, difficulty with new learning.

Things To Consider When A Person Falls:• Is there a reversible cause or is it related to another medical condition?• Does the person have changes in vision?• Has the person’s mobility changed?• Is the person restless? Fatigued?• Is the person in pain but unable to recognize or communicate their discomfort?

Sonata Senior Living has taken fall risk factors into consideration in the design of their purpose-built memory care design, Serenades by Sonata. The Sonata purpose-built design integrates the latest technologies and environmental considerations to provide a S.A.F.E. place for our residents.

Surface — Low pile carpets; resilient, anti-skid flooring keeping flooring level changes to a minimum.

Attention — Simple, open floor plans assist with resident’s orientation and way finding as well as unobstructed staff visibility; Resident room “staff check” buttons monitors completion of pre-programmed staff check intervals and alerts shift supervisors if check is not completed.

Footwear — Staff ensure that all residents wear shoes; when rising from bed, staff will place shoes or “grip” socks on resident’s feet to reduce the chance of slipping; staff encourage family members to replace slip-on shoes and slippers with a regular shoe and to provide the “grip” socks.

Environment — Motion detectors in resident rooms alerts staff when resident rises; LED vertical lighting on the exterior of the bathroom door trim provides a visual cue to the bathroom while offering a vertical orientation to residents while attempting to stand; Amber lighting in the resident bathrooms provide a visual cue for self-toileting while providing a non-disruptive night light; Increased lighting limits shadows.Ongoing initiatives for fall reduction in all Sonata communities includes: continuous staff education on Fall Risk Strategies; resident exercise programs designed to maintain mobility and movement; therapy evaluations through our providers allows for on-site physical and occupational therapy as ordered by a physician; medication reviews; and, fall tracking and evaluation through incident reporting.

Happy New Year!

“We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty,

some are dull, while others brights, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.”
