“The Local Authority saythat there will be a need formore primary school placesand they have indicated thatthey want to talk to the Trustabout provision atStonehill/Longslade – thiswould make sense, but therehave been no formal discus-sions yet and there is stillsome way to go before it mayemerge as an option.”

Mr Howe said an assess-ment of the exact number ofextra places needed would be neces-sary to decide whether existingbuildings at Stonehill/Longsladecould be converted or if new buildwould be necessary.

A 192 name petition calling for anew primary school was recentlypresented to the County Council byBirstall Borough Councillor SimonSansome.

• 900 homes are planned at Hal-lam Fields and 525 have been built

• Jelson are required to provide afoot/cycle bridge crossing over the

A6 on completion of the 750th home• Now that the land allocated for

the school at Hallam Fields is vacant,Jelson have the option to submitplans for extra housing on the site.

• the County Council has received£54million from the government tobe spent over the next three yearson creating an extra 500 primaryplaces within he county. The moneywill not be allocated to areas likeBirstall where developer contribu-tions towards school places havebeen negotiated.

organiser Sue Bailey said: “A lot of peo-ple think golf is out of their reach, thatit’s too expensive or an old man’s game. But we make it fun so why not comealong and try something different.”

A CAMPAIGN to reopen aBirstall post office is at-tracting a growing numberof supporters.

Birstall Borough Councillor SimonSansome has started a petition callingfor the Kingsgate Avenue post office to bere-opened.

He said: “I have contacted the PostOffice to see if they would do a review ofPost office service in Birstall and askedfor Kingsgate Post Office to be re-opened. I did not get a reply.

“A few years back Birstall had threepost offices, now we have a larger popu-lation and only one post office in thevillage. This is unacceptable. Birstallneeds another post office”.

Former Post Master Mukesh Patel isbacking the campaign. He said: “A postoffice is needed round here – people arestill coming into the shop every day forpost office services and we closed in2007.

”We fought very hard to keep thepost office open. We took over in 1995and generated more revenue, the profita-bility was very good and I think the PostOffice made a mistake with its closure

programme, both at Kingsgate and na-tionally.”

Comments left by residents signingthe petition:

• Building of new estates further

north continues, Hallam Fields is up andoccupied, now we face ‘Broadnook Gar-den Suburb’ 1500 more houses. Younow know you lost a lot of customerswhen you expected them to travel past

five other banks and building societiesand six ATMs to our other Post Office. Please now give people back the conven-ience of a PO with decent parking andspeedy staff.

• As it’s the only one we do have nowwhich is quite close to myself it is almostalways busy which either makes me getslightly annoyed at times, knowing theyhave shut another one down, or some-times I will even leave and wait until I’min another village if its not urgent. Evenmore important there are some of theolder generation who find it particularlydifficult getting to the only post office inthe village now, when they live way overthe other side of the A6.

• This reintroduction of an old postoffice counter is desperately needed inour growing village.

To sign the petition search for Kings-gate Post Office at www.change.org orvisit the Kingsgate store.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS of up to £6000 for solid wall insula-tion have now become available as part of the Green Dealinitiative.

The funding takes the form of avoucher. It allows homeowners to re-claim up to £6000 for installing solidwall insulation and an extra £1000 tocover two additional measures, such asfloor insulation or heat recovery sys-tems.

The first step is for homeowners torequest a free survey.

The Force set up its eBay site in Sep-tember 2009, specialising in goods re-covered under the Proceeds of CrimeAct. The most popular items have beenluxury cars and high class watches. AnAston Martin DB9 car went for £63,000and a Rolex brought in more than£13,000. Designer clothes and jewelleryhave also proved popular, along withelectrical goods and computers. Theitems have usually been obtained bycriminals through legitimate channels, but have been paid for out of the profitsof drug-dealing, fraud, or other cash-generating offences..

The more unusual items have includ-ed:

• a replica of a German armouredcar

• skateboards• collections of comics• a microlite aircraftThe force also uses other specialist

methods of disposing of goods andproperty including estate agencies andtraditional auctions.

Paul Wenlock, the head of Leicester-shire Police’s economic crime unit, said:“Leicestershire Police was the first force

in the country to set up its own eBayshop and it has been a huge success. We have generated possibly twice asmuch from these sales than if we hadsent the same items to auction. The siteis also a daily reminder that we will takeaction to ensure criminals do not benefitfrom their crimes. In some cases wehave been able to seize goods and sellthem where we have not managed tosecure a criminal conviction. All themoney that the site generates goes backto fund crime-fighting work.”

He added: “Often the enquiry startsfrom information from members of thepublic. If you know anyone who appearsto be living a lifestyle beyond their visi-ble means, we would like to know. Theymay be living on the proceeds of burgla-ry, money-laundering, fraud or drugdealing. We can take both civil andcriminal action to be sure they do notbenefit from these activities.”

Held for the first time in 2013, thisyear will see more than 180 householdsin Birstall holding a yard sale, morethan double last year. Bargain hunterswill be able to cruise around the villageon Saturday July 5 to see what they canfind at stalls in driveways and front gar-dens.

Fiona, a mum of two who lives inGwendolin Avenue, said: “We learnt a lotfrom last year so it has been a littleeasier and it’s been brilliant how peoplehave been so helpful – we needed £40for the raffle licence and someone do-nated that, then I put on Facebook weneeded balloons and someone gave ussome – the response has been great.”

“IT’S BEEN crazy, but in a good way!” says Fiona Barnes, as she nearsthe end of the job of organising this year’s Big Birstall Yard Sale.

A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council washeld on June 16.

Borough Councillor Simon Sansome reported that he had com-piled a list of 21 residents who had requested grit bins and hadprovided their names and addresses to the Parish Council.

He said that normal procedure was for Parish Councils to applyto the County Council for bins and pay a fee of £200. If the ParishCouncil were to decide not to provide them he asked that all theresidents on the list would need an explanation. He welcomed anysuggestion to move existing, underused bins, to new locations on thelist.

Borough Councillor David Gaskell reported that work on provid-ing new housing figures for the Core Strategy was working well andthat it was hoped that the Planning Inspector’s timetable could bebrought forward.

Cllr Gaskell said that improvement works to Riversdale Court hadbeen delayed when it was discovered that costings for the projecthad been under-estimated by a third, but funding has now beensecured.

Cllr Gaskell said he had visited the Reading Room on BirstallRoad and commented that resident Jim Garner deserved congratula-tions for his hard work restoring the building to such a high stand-ard.

Councillors discussed a suggestion from a resident for a ‘dogpark area’ on the playing field – a fenced off section where it wouldbe permitted to allow dogs to run off the lead. This is currentlyprohibited by the bylaws.

Chairman Ann Marshall said that the Parish council had lots ofproblems with dogs fouling and there had been incidents of dogsbiting people.

Comment was made that there was not enough room on theplaying field for an area like this and that the playing field was forsports activities and children, not a dog exercise area, and that Wa-

termead Country Park was available ifdogs needed to be allowed off the lead.

Cllr Allcock reported that fenced offareas for dogs worked well in someLondon parks and Cllr Ashton said heliked the idea of a space for dogs on thepark, that the area near LoughboroughRoad was underused, and that the coun-cil should clearly set out the function ofthe park to better assess the viability ofthe proposal.

Sympathy was expressed for dogowners with dogs that need space to runand Cllr Howe commented that the exist-ing bylaws were the best of a bad job.

It was agreed to consult the groundstaff on possible areas within the playingfields and to invite readers of the BirstallPost to contact the Parish Council withtheir views on the proposal.

It was reported that the council hasreceived three defibrillators and hopesto install the first one on School Laneplaying field before the gala.

Cllr Allcock reported that someonehad cut a section of hedge on MeadowLane so poorly it looked like a gang ofvandals had attacked it with machetes. The chairman said it had not been doneby Parish Council staff.

Cllr Ashton suggested as items for afuture agenda how the Parish Councilcould get greater public participation, and consideration of the criteria it usesfor deciding on the allocation of itsresources.

A noticeboard near Meadow Lane hasbeen removed because it was becominga target of antisocial behaviour. A newsite for it has yet to be determined.

Part of the metal sliding gate at theentrance to the School Lane playing fieldcar park has eroded and it was agreedto spend £1295 on repairs.

Pa was chosen in a rink along with fellow debutantKirsty Hembrow (Somerset), Stef Branfield (Somerset)and Amy Gowshall (Lincolnshire). The four had a100% record, beating Ireland 21-13, Scotland 20-14,Jersey 23-13 and finally Wales 27-20. This helped Eng-land to achieve the “Grand Slam” and retain the trophythey won last year.

A club spokesman said: “Pa played very wellthroughout the series on a tricky and testing outdoorcarpet surface that many players were not used to, asthey usually play on grass in England in the summermonths. Pa has also qualified for two events at the NationalChampionships, which take place in Leamington Spanext month. She will be there in the fours, along withVal Ross, Jan Everitt and Di Hurst, as a team from Bir-stall qualified for the eighth year in succession, with Janand Di being involved in all eight. JUL 2014THE BIRSTALL POST12

Director Sue Withers said: “Thedecision to perform ‘the Queen and I’was taken at the beginning of 2013.

“Written by a local author and in-corporating a local inner city councilestate, some funny parts and some verythoughtful parts, it all made for goodentertainment. The Royals on benefits, confusion over local accents, weeds inthe garden, dogs leaving their littlepresents in the street, queuing at theDSS, and buying bones at the butchers.Hilarious, silly and so very real.”

She added: “It is an honour and aprivilege to be involved in promotingthe work of such a distinguished andrespected local author. The audienceincluded four members of SueTownsend’s family who said they thor-oughly enjoyed it and that she wouldhave been delighted with the produc-

tion.”HATS have been performing for 22

years. Sue said: “The cast has seenmany changes over the years, however, there are still a number of original castmembers treading the boards. Thegroup consists of multi skilled mem-bers, some who can turn their hands tomore than one role. We have peoplewho prefer being on the stage, peoplewho are extremely innovative and giftedwhen it comes to scenery and props, people who assist with sound and light-ing and also front of house and backstage members. Our pantomime lastyear was written by our resident scen-ery persons and included originalsongs as well. The age range of currentmembers is from teenagers to 80, yes80 and still on the stage.”

Over the years the group have im-mersed themselves in many differentstyles of plays, comedy, drama, horrorand suspense being just a few exam-ples. They perform two productionseach year, a pantomime in Novemberand a spring play. Sue said: “While wehave an established group, we are al-ways looking for new members, inparticular males. The group meets eachWednesday from 7.15-9.30pm at High-cliffe School, Birstall. Please feel free tocome along and have a chat and seewhat we do.”

Time to stock up on the sun-creamIf you are going on holiday this sum-

mer, please make sure you take a fewrelevant precautions to make sure yourhome is safe and secure from burglars.Burglars target houses that look empty,so here is some advice on how to en-sure your home is kept safe and secureso you don’t come home to a nastyshock:

• Make sure your premises are se-cured every time you leave, even if onlyfor a short time

• Make sure your alarm, if you haveone, is set

• Put lights on a timer switch to makeyour house look occupied. You can alsoget timer switches for the radio and/orTV

• Ask a neighbour to push postthrough your letterbox and take in anydeliveries for you

• Cancel milk, newspapers and anyother deliveries

• Ask a neighbour to park their caron your drive so that passers-by assumesomeone is home

• If you have a close friend or relativenearby with a key, ask them to drawyour curtains in the evening and back inthe morning. Don’t leave curtains drawnduring the day.

• If you have a lawn, mow it beforeyou go away

•Don’t display your home address onthe outside of your luggage

• Don’t publish your absence on theinternet. Status updates, comments andphotos on social media can all give awaythe fact that you are out of your homefor an extended period.

• Ensure any outdoor tools such asladders are securely stored away asthese could be used to force entry intoyour home.

• Don’t leave a message on youranswer phone saying that you are away

The best defence against burglars isto have friendly caring neighbours, which is what NHW is all about. It’s notabout being nosy, it’s about caring.Do you have infant/primary schoolage children?

A simple safety tip which doesn’t costmuch at all. We have all seen thesecoloured wrist-bands (charities/goodcauses etc) and children like wearingthem. If you are taking a young child toa Theme Park/Fairground/CrowdedBeach etc, give them a wrist-band andwrite your mobile phone number on itusing a permanent marker. In the eventof becoming separated, any securityofficial or ‘good samaritan’ can easilyread the number and quickly reunite alost child with their parents.

Enjoy your holidays wherever youmay be.

From the Birstall & Wanlip NHW commit-tee.

NHW news& crime report

Crime Report: Birstall & Wanlip May2014

Assaults 3, burglary 6, burglary non-dwell-ing 6, damage 8, damage to motor vehicle 1,drugs 2, fraud 1, theft 9, theft cycle 3, theftfrom motor vehicle 5, theft store 11.

WE HAVE unfortunately seen afairly high level of reportedcrime again this month, with atotal of 55 offences being re-ported during the month of May.

Once again, a large number of thesewere theft offences (20 in total) with afurther eight ‘drive-offs’ from the Petrolstation being reported this month andanother 11 shop thefts also being report-ed. On a positive note however, twomales who were responsible for anumber of the shop thefts were arrestedthis week following a pursuit throughWatermead Park and have since beencharged with several offences and givenbail conditions not to enter Birstall. Afurther male who is believed to be re-sponsible for a number of other offenceshas also been identified via CCTV footageand enquiries continue to try and locateand arrest this male.

Burglary offences (both dwelling andnon-dwelling) have increased this monthwith a total of 12 being reported. Severalof these occurred in the early hours ofMay 22 when a number of sheds andgarages in the Park Road and FieldingRoad areas were targeted by a group ofmales using motorbikes and mopeds.Enquiries are continuing in an attempt toidentify these males and I would askanyone who sees any groups of males onmopeds in the early hours to report thisto the Police via 101, so that we can tryto obtain their details and establish if theywere the ones involved in these offences.

Assault offences have fallen considera-bly this month and the number of damageto motor vehicle incidents has also de-clined sharply, suggesting that the spatewe had in April appears to have tailed off. Please however continue to be vigilantand report anyone seen acting suspicious-ly around vehicles to either the Police oryour local neighbourhood watch co-ordi-nator.

Following a few reports of Anti-Socialbehaviour (ASB) in the Meadow Lanearea at the start of the month we havecreated a new Neighbourhood Priority inrelation to this location and are workingclosely with several other agencies toaddress the problems that we have beenexperiencing down there. There havebeen increased Police patrols in the areaat the key times and a number of peoplehave been checked and spoken to regard-ing their behaviour. If you do witness ASBin this, or indeed any area of Birstall orWanlip please contact either Leicester-shire Police or Charnwood BoroughCouncil so that we can work together toaddress these issues.

JUL 2014THE BIRSTALL POST 13

The incident happed on Sunday Au-gust 25, 2013, at 9.30pm at a bus stopon Loughborough Road. Leicester CrownCourt heard that the three men cycledpast, verbally challenged the victim forlooking at them and then began theassault, punching him in the face anddragging him into the road and kickinghim.

The man’s girlfriend received a blowto the head as she tried to intervene. She lay on top of her boyfriend to tryand stop them and the assault was onlybrought to an end when a passing mo-torist stopped and shouted at the man’sassailants.

The victim suffered a fractured noseand multiple cuts and bruises to hisface, head and body.

Shamus Hirrell (23) of Milnroy Road,Thurnby Lodge, Leicester admitted caus-ing actual bodily harm to the male vic-tim and common assault upon thegirlfriend.

His brother Liam Hirrell (19) ofHarrowgate Drive, Birstall and AdenHolyoake (22) of Bale Road Northfields,Leicester both admitted causing actualbodily harm.

Shamus Hirrell and Holyoake re-ceived a 12 month prison sentence andLiam Hirrell was given a 12 month de-tention sentence at a young offenders’institute.

Participants are able to waltz, jive, cha cha, paso doble, tango and sambaand rumba without a partner or evendancing experience. The aim of the classis to create a fun, energetic and effectiveway to keep fit.

The fitness craze mixes Ballroom withLatin dancing and was designed by thestars of Strictly Come Dancing NatalieLowe, Ian Waite and Britain’s most suc-cessful swimmer, Mark Foster.

Great Britain swimmer Mark Foster, who was converted to dance fitness said:“You’ve got a double whammy. You’removing around and getting fit andhealthy, having fun but also you’re learn-ing proper steps from Strictly.”

Local Instructor Lisa Cluer has beenprofessionally trained by Natalie and Ian.The stars were determined to keep thequality of FitSteps high.

Strictly Come Dancing professionalIan Waite said: “We wanted to make surethat all our coaches are at a certainlevel, and that they deliver the steps inthe correct way. For people who havewatched Strictly, when they dance Fit-Steps there will be steps when they say toeach other ‘Yes, I’ve seen that step be-fore on the show’.”

Ian added that several people havecome to him saying that the class “hadchanged their life” and it prevents themfrom enduring the dreariness of exercise.

“This is entertaining, and you feel asthough you’re having fun doing dancesteps. You don’t realise that you areactually burning lots of calories. We’veproven that you can burn about 600calories in a 40 minute lesson” he said.

Lisa’s classes are at Stonehill School,Birstall Social Club and the MemorialHall, Thurcaston. Contact Lisa on 07850759170, [email protected]

He added: “The gentle rolling of the bowls, time spent in the open air, theperfect green grass and good company. We’ve got them all and good prices at thebar too. Come along to the Co-op sports ground on Birstall Road any Monday orFriday at 6pm or contact John on 0116 2675947. Bring flattish shoes, no otherkit required. Come and have a go!”

TRY A variety of arts and crafts activities for free at a 12month project that is being run by a Birstall artist.

The project’s organisers have saidthey will re-submit their bid and Leices-ter City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has said:“I am absolutely convinced it will hap-pen sooner or later.”

The plans were launched in 2012when the Great Central Railway, Leices-ter City Council and the National RailwayMuseum announced their bid to the

Heritage Lottery Fund for a railway mu-seum next to the Leicester North stationat Birstall.

Bill Ford, Managing Director of theGCR, said: “The museum would bring asubstantial number of priceless locomo-tives and carriages from the nationalcollection, based in York, to the city, displaying them in a new building rightalongside the tracks of the Great CentralRailway. It would celebrate the rolerailways have played in creating themodern city and tell the story of thelives and communities affected by them.”

He added “We are naturally disap-pointed not to make the cut first timearound, but we received a lot of praisefor the strong vision and our partnershipapproach. We will absolutely bid againlater this year when we have receiveddetailed feedback on the project propos-al.”

The project is expected to cost£15million with matching funding bal-ancing the contribution from the lottery. It is estimated that the museum andrailway together would bring £43m ofeconomic benefit to the area with fiveyears of opening, while sustaining hun-dreds of jobs.

The Sun Has Got His Hat OnAs summer time approaches and we look

forward to holidays, day trips, the beach, summer sports, working and sitting in thegarden all in our wonderful outdoors, Bir-stall BAG’s would like to help keep people‘SUNSMART’.

The UK's national skin cancer preventioncampaign SUNSMART is built around the keyelements of research, public communication, professional support and policy developmentand it has been run by Cancer Research UKsince 2003. The campaign is workingtowards an end to the year-on-yearrise in skin cancer incidenceand mortality rates in the UK,and to close of the gap be-tween male and female sur-vival rates.

Here are some interest-ing facts and easy to imple-ment advice to help keepyou and your family safe inthe sun:

· Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV)radiation from the sun or sunbeds is themain cause of skin cancer.

· There are two main types of skin can-cer: non-melanoma skin cancer, which isvery common, and malignant melanomawhich is less common but more serious.

· Over 8 out of 10 melanomas in the UK(around 11,100 cases every year) are linkedto too much exposure to UV rays from sun-light or sunbeds.

Anyone can develop skin cancer, butsome people are more likely to get the dis-ease than others. These people tend to haveone or more of the following:

· Fair skin that burns easily in strong sun· Lots of moles or freckles· Red or fair hair

· Light-coloured eyes· A personal or family history of skin

cancer· A history of sunburn. The best way to enjoy the sun safely and

protect your skin from sunburn is to use acombination of shade, clothing and sun-screen. When the sun is strong or you’re atrisk of burning:

· Spend time in the shade between 11amand 3pm.

· Wear a t-shirt, hat and sunglasses.· Use a sunscreen with at least fac-tor 15 and a high star rating. Use it

generously and reapply regu-larly.Finding skin cancer:what to look for

Finding skin cancerearly saves lives, so it’simportant to know thesigns and see your doctorabout any unusual or per-

sistent changes to your skin. It’s generally a good idea to be

aware of how your skin normally looksso you’ll be more likely to notice changesthat could be signs of skin cancer. If youspot a change such as a new mole, or anymoles, freckles or patches of normal skinthat change in size, shape or colour, it’sworth getting it checked out by a doctor, even if you don’t think it’s anything to worryabout. It may well not be skin cancer, but ifit is, getting it diagnosed and treated earlycould make a real difference to the out-come.

The ABCD (Asymmetry, Border, Colour,Diameter) rule can help you remembersome key changes to look out for:

Asymmetry: the two halves of the mole donot look the same.

Border: theedges of themole are irregu-lar, blurred orjagged.

Colour: thecolour of themole is uneven, with more thanone shade.

Diameter: themole is widerthan 6mm in

diameter (the size of a pencil eraser). For further information University Hospi-

tals of Leicester Cancer Information Centreon 0116 258 6189.
