front of the council offices and also, inthe centenary of World War I, pay trib-ute to all who have lost their lives in theservice of their country.”

The Parish Council supported theproject and the clock was manufacturedand installed by Smiths of Derby at acost of £1700, which was donated byBirstall and District Local History Socie-ty.

Society spokesman Mike Smith said:“We felt the clock is a communityproject that everyone in the communitywould gain from. It is something thatwill be here in years to come that willremind us of the fallen of two worldwars. I think it looks magnificent.”

In 1932 and aged 5, Mike attendedthe Village Hall when it was a school. “Ifthe clock were here when I was atschool I would have been on time moreoften” he said.

Birstall Parish Council paid for thepreparatory work to allow the installa-tion of the clock to go ahead, and theBirstall Royal British Legion provideddetails of the Legion’s colours of blueand gold so they could be matched onthe clock’s face and hands. Shortly be-fore the clock was installed Cllr Marshallpainted all the railings outside the frontof the Village Hall and the council’sestates team erected hanging baskets.

A BIRSTALL home was set on firewhen it was struck by lightning.

The house on Kingsgate Avenue was hitduring a lightning storm in the early hours ofSaturday July 4.

Neighbours heard a loud bang. One residentsaid: “There was thunder and lightning allaround through Friday night but the one whichhit this house was so close it was like an ex-plosion and woke everyone up in the area. There was also s strong burning smell in theair.”

The house was unoccupied at the time andneighbours called the emergency services whoarrived to put out the fire.

The new occupants of the house, the Bar-atheepan family, had moved all their furnitureinto the house the previous day and were dueto move in the day the lightning struck.

A house in Barrow Road, Quorn was alsohit that night and set on fire. The first floor ofthe home was gutted by the blaze and it tookthe emergency services an hour to put out thefire. An elderly couple were evacuated.

During the storm, lightning also struckhomes in Cumbrian Way, Shepshed, GravesWay, Anstey and Kingsdale Road, Leicester. Ashed in Boundary Road, Mountsorrel was de-

be consulted.”Birstall’s County Councillor Iain Bent-

ley does not support the proposal. Hesaid: “They’ve asked me for my viewand ‘over my dead body’ was what I toldthem. To take out an existing lane forbuses - the idea is stark raving mad. Icouldn’t possibly agree to it.”

SPEEDING ISUES on Birstall Roadwere raised at a public meetingin July.

Birstall Parish Council organised the meet-ing at the Village Hall which was attended byresidents of Birstall Road and Stuart Bullenfrom the County Council’s Environment andTransport Department.

The County Council have produced a draftproposal for three new speed cushions. Thesewould be located near the junction with EastRoad, Freehold Road and Kilby Avenue.

Both the council and residents agree thatspeeding is an issue on the road, and therewas a discussion about the best ways to reducespeed.

Any proposals would have to be affordableand comply with regulations and guidancefrom the Department of Transport.

The most favoured suggestion was a speedcamera but Mr Bullen said Birstall Road wouldnot rank high enough to justify installing one.

Several people commented that the existingspeed cushions on the road were ineffectivebut were told that speed tables that go the full

stroyed and a tree in StationLane, Scraptoft was hit andbrought down telephone lines.

A tree in Goods Yard Close,Loughborough, caught on fireafter being struck.

width of the road are no longer in-stalled.

The Vehicle Activated Speed signswere ignored by motorists, said resi-dents.

Comment was made that since theremoval of the speed cushion near the

junction withChurch Hill, speeding hadincreased. Asuggestion wasmade that the

road markings near that junction shouldbe made much clearer.

Mr Bullen reported that he wouldproduce a second proposal for twospeed cushionsand a chicane.

The speedcushion nearChurch Hill willbe replaced. Aspokesperson forLeicestershireCounty Counciltold the BirstallPost: “The speedbump was removed inMarch as it had become loose and wasa potential hazard to motorists. It will bereplaced in the same location, as al-though the road narrowing does act as aform of traffic calming, speeds still needto be reduced to ensure safety. Theworks will be carried out when a suita-ble replacement has been identified. Atemporary road closure will need to beput in place whilst the work is carriedout.”

AN INVESTMENT of morethan £100,000 over the lastfour years has transformeda local football club.

Birstall United’s Meadow Lane groundhas been improved with new changingrooms, a newly re laid pitch, perimeterfencing and a resurfaced car park. Anew 50 seater stand is under construc-tion.

“Comments we’ve had from residentsis that it looks like a brand new club, and to us it feels like a brand new club”says Chairman Gary Fox.

Improvements to the club began fouryears ago when vandalism was a prob-lem. “All we were doing was cominghere and fixing things” said Gary. “We

were all fed up with fighting problemsand decided we wanted to get the clubdecent again and make it a venue thevillage can be proud of.”

The first priority was securing theground with new fencing which got start-ed with a £2000 donation from CarlGunns. Then a successful bid for£50,000 awarded by sport England’sInspired Facilities enabled the club to

finish the fencing and have the newchanging rooms built.

A further grant of £22,000 from theEdith Murphy Foundation paid for thecar park to be resurfaced and othergrants have helped pay for a new pitchto be laid in 2014 and landscaping im-provements at the ground.

Securing a new 25 year lease on the

site with the co-operation of BirstallParish Council has helped the club whenapplying for grant money, as many or-ganisations require a long lease beforethey will award any funding.

Gary has been involved with the clubfor forty years, first as a player, thenmanager and now chairman. “It’s thebiggest club in the village and we are all

proud of it” he said. “What we’d like isto encourage greater use of it by thecommunity, either as a facility for hireor by the public coming along and sup-porting us on match days.”

The club house has a 30 space carpark, a bar, and is suitable for parties, meetings and use by sports clubs.

Membership for a year is £5 or£7.50 for families. Attendance on matchdays is £3 or £1.50 for pensioners towatch the first team – second teammatches are free.

Good to hear that Sir Peter Soulsbystill cares about looking after the CityCouncil coffers.

Apparently the Red Hill roundaboutwill only be blocked to trespassers'when all three traveller sites (MeynellsGorse, Greengate Lane and ThurcastonRoad) are full'. I can only assume thatthe funding for such work on the round-about is dependant on part of the rentpaid by those using the sites. If that'scorrect, then it is micro-budgeting at it'sbest, but there must be bigger financialissues to focus on.

Just one worry about Sir Peter'slogic....what happens when the site hassome vacancies at a later date and afterthe barriers have been put in place?

Is this another example of the CityCouncil's divisive attitude towards thosewho choose to pay their local taxeselsewhere?

B Hughes, Birstall

I write once more to report theprogress of my bat survey. I must admitthat this year I have seen no bats in mygarden. I have seen them in other yearsthree doors along from where I live, butto date there has been nothing that Ihave seen over my garden.

I now have about 25 records fromyour readers; many of these come fromthe areas bordering the Lakes, as maybe expected, and relatively few from theother side of the Loughborough Road. Iwould be interested in hearing morefrom the Fielding Road area. I am par-ticularly interested in the Gates estate, asthere are few trees there and so roostswould be expected to be in houses.

I hope to interest someone with anelectronic device that detects bats tocome around soon and see what specieshe/she can pick up. If you see a strangeperson, therefore, listening to squeakscoming from an electrical contraptionup your way, please remember that itcould be someone detecting bats.

Many ladies have benefitted over theyears from Jackie's skills at the RestyleHairdressers (Windmill Avenue) andnow, after an absence of several monthsdue to preventative treatment for cancer,Restyle have welcomed Jackie back. Itmay be that some folk are unaware ofher return.

Speaking for myself, it is rare to finda hair stylist whom I could confidentlyrecommend but Jackie is one such. Anadvantage of her salon is you are neverkept waiting (!) and everyone is friendlyand helpful.

Beccy Kay, Founder of the WhiteHorse’s Great Birstall Bake Off, said:“After the huge success of last yearsBake Off we are extremely excitedabout what the bakers of Birstallwill offer us this year. We hadincredible talent from both juniorand adult entries and from peo-ple who had never baked beforeto those with more experience.Everyone who got involved eitherthrough baking or attending thecoffee morning all had a wonder-ful time and ultimately we raised asuperb amount of money, £1023and nearly double the previous year, for Macmillan. So please get youraprons on, even if you think you're'not good enough' because it's a wholelot of fun and we want to make evenmore for a great cause this year!”

Baking categories are set to include:Cupcake, Cake, Bread, Sweet Bake, Sa-voury Bake, Biscuit, Decoration andUnder 16's. The judges were astoundedby the variety in the 2014Savoury category and arehoping for more of the samein 2015. Mr Allen of Allen'sFamily Bakery has onceagain agreed to donate yeastto any entrant wishing tobake bread.

And with the event goingfrom strength to strength, this year there'll be plenty ofentertainment to ensure theday raises as much moneyas. So if the allure of someof Birstall's best cakes isn'tenough, there'll be gardenparty games, face painting, abouncy castle and live musicall on Sunday September 20at the Macmillan World'sBiggest Coffee Morning atthe White Horse.

The judging panel will befollowing the WI guidelineswhich judge on characteris-tics such as texture, appear-ance and flavour.

WARNING LETTERS havebeen sent to speedingmotorists after volunteersmonitored vehicle speedsin the village in June.

Throughout the month a Communi-ty Speed Watch scheme organised byNeighbourhood Watch operated inBirstall. A group of twelve volunteers, working mainly in groups of three, conducted twenty-seven one-hoursessions monitoring traffic speed inthe village. The equipment, trainingand support were given by the Com-

munity SpeedWatch Team atCounty Hall.

A spokes-man for thegroup said:“The firstweek’s figuresshowed thatthe great ma-jority of speed-ing driverswere on Bir-stall Road andGreengateLane, so latersessions con-centrated on

those roads. Greengate Lane has theadditional issue of a 20 mph limitwhen the school crossing patrol isoperating. Wanlip Lane was signifi-cantly affected by roadworks through-out the month and traffic-flow therewas not typical.”

Vehicles exceeding 37 mph (27mph in the school crossing zone)were logged and daily returns weresent to the Police. A total of 270 vehi-cles were reported and 154 wereidentified by them as suitable for fur-ther action. Warning letters were sentto the registered owners informingthem that they had been recordedbreaking the speed limit.

The spokesman added: “Thescheme was welcomed by most mem-bers of the public although, sadly, afew were a little less friendly. Therewere a few drivers who appeared totake exception to being monitored butmost either ignored us or gave us afriendly wave or smile.

“We do not expect any effect wehad on drivers’ behaviour, promptedby the sight of residents in high visi-bility jackets checking their speed, tolast for very long. But drawing atten-tion to the speed limit should makesome drivers more aware of how theyshould be driving, especially since thenext time they are checked, it is morelikely to be by the Police who willissue a summons that results in a fineand penalty points.”

It is hoped to repeat the exercise, either later this year or early nextyear. The possibility of running ascheme for Wanlip Parish is also be-ing explored.

AUG 2015THE BIRSTALL POST 15

‘Leicester Sightounds’ was founded byOlwen Guildford of White Horse Lane,Birstall. She said: “About this time lastyear I had an idea of starting a facebookpage for owners of dogs in the sight-hound group which includes AfghanHounds, Borzois, Deerhounds, Grey-hounds,Whippets,Salukis andLurchers, toname but afew! As I amnot exactlyinternet‘savvy’ Imanaged tocreate a pagebut struggledto move itfurther.

“I appealed on the page for help toget the group going and my wish wasgranted in the form of Katie Munden.Katie, being considerably younger thanmyself had fantastic knowledge of allthings internet and stepped in with greatenthusiasm. All of a sudden our groupwas born.

“My original aim was to organisesocial walks all around the county toprovide an opportunityfor like minded peopleand dogs to get togetherand share experiences. The group membershiphas grown to 330 andcompletely exceeded myoriginal expectations.”

She added: “As wellas fantastic walks inmany different locationswe have also found thatthe group provides asupport network forpeople who may be having problemswith their dogs. Sighthounds make greatloyal companions but have their ownidiosyncrasies which inexperienced own-ers can struggle with. As we have manyexperienced owners in the group we areoften able to ‘iron out’ potential prob-lems.”

One of the groups regular walks isaround Watermead Country Park onWednesdays.

As a breed group these dogs oftenfind themselves in rescue organisations, especially greyhounds, which are oftensurplus to requirement if they are un-successful on the track or retired due toinjury. The group has taken to raising

funds to help organisations involved inrehoming dogs and have donated almost£1000 to help with vet bills, kennellingand feeding. This money has been raisedby a combination of selling group mer-chandise, an online dog show, hosting adog show at Blaby Fun

day andotheractivities.

Thegroup isholdingits firstLeicesterSight-houndsFun Dayand DogShow onAugust

16, at Oakfield Park in Blaby from12noon to 6pm. There will be 12 classeswith rosettes to fifth place and a trophyfor best in show. It is open to allbreeds. “We are hoping it will be a greatday for all the family with Police andFire Rescue in attendance, bouncy cas-tles, fairground rides and a great varietyof stalls” said Olwen.

FOR LEICESTERSHIRE residents, Augusttends to be the month when the rest ofEngland goes away on holiday!

If you haven’t already done so, it may bean opportunity to take your family to see theRichard the Third exhibition - an idea tokeep the children interested, if they start toget bored as the summer holidays draw to aclose. They – and you - can’t fail to be im-pressed too by a look inside the cathedral, seen so often on the television in recentmonths, where Richard’s body lies at last inpeace.

Another alternative for a day out is thecoach trip to Lichfield, organised by theChurch social committee for Saturday August22. Lichfield is a delightful market town witha magnificent cathedral, as well as shops, eating places etc. You can also join an op-tional guided tour round the cathedral for£6.50. As the town is not far away fromLeicester the coach journey (£14) is relative-ly short. To book or to find out more ringGill Pope on 0116 2675086.

Then, as already written about in thiscolumn last month, there is the annualChurch Garden Party on Bank Holiday Mon-day, 31st August, and this year the proceedswill be shared by the church and the Alzhe-imer’s Society. The fete takes place on St.James’ Church lawn, on Church Hill, Birstallfrom 2-4pm (or in the church if the weatherturns wet). Raffle tickets are already incirculation or can be bought on the afternoon, with some excellent prizes to be won. Seeyou there!

News from thechurches

NHW news& crime reportWE HAVE unfortunately had a risein recorded crime during June, up

by 14 offences compared to May.This is mainly due to a rise in damage

and damage to motor vehicle offences, ofwhich we have had a total of 16, mainlyrelating to windows being smashed withstones or small rocks. These are happeningall over the village, with incidents beingreported on Roman Road, Gwendolin Ave-nue, Wanlip Lane, Birstall Road and Lough-borough Road to name but a few. Withreports being spread over such a wide areait is proving difficult for us to target ourpatrols to anywhere in particular, so pleasecan I ask you to contact us if you have anyinformation as to who may be responsiblefor doing this, or if you should witness any-one throwing stones at vehicles or houses.

We have received several complaintsrecently about drugs being used in variousparts of the village & we are obviously keento deal with this issue. Earlier this month weexecuted a drugs warrant at an address &recovered a quantity of cannabis and money, which has been seized whilst investigationscontinue. A male was also arrested and iscurrently on Police bail. Please can I askthat you contact us on 101 if you suspectthat people are using illegal drugs so wecan try to attend the area and catch thoseresponsible. It also helps us to build up anintelligence picture as to where & when theactivity is happening.

At the beginning of the month we re-ceived several reports whereby elderly resi-dents were being contacted by a malepretending to be from the MetropolitanPolice, telling them that there had beensuspicious activity on their bank accounts. He told them they needed to transfer moneyinto another account in order to avoid hav-ing money stolen and gave them details ofthis account. The male came across as verybelievable as several residents were unfortu-nately fooled into transferring money.

Please make sure that if you are contact-ed by anyone asking you to do this you hangup immediately and report the call to eitheryour bank or the Police on 101. The policewill never ask you to transfer money in thisway.

This weekend was the annual BirstallGala and it was once again good to see somany people out enjoying themselves. Asidefrom a couple of minor incidents, mainlyinvolving people from outside Birstall, theevent went very well indeed and I would liketo say a big thank you to everyone who wasinvolved in the organization and planningthat went into making the event so success-ful.

Thanks for reading and as always pleaseremain vigilant and report any crimes orsuspicious activity to the Police on 101. Youcan also contact your local NHW co-ordina-tor for advice on non-crime matters.

Achieving World-Class Cancer Outcomes: aStrategy For England

An independent task force has put togeth-er and released this report that outlines thepriorities necessary to help the NHS achieveworld-class cancer outcomes. Birstall BAG’swanted ‘to keep you up to speed’ with thesepossible changes; knowing what you’re enti-tled to can radically impact on your ability tonavigate the health care system. Let’s hopeyou don’t need it but just in case -

280,000 people were diagnosed with can-cer in England in 2013/14 and this is expect-ed to reach more than 300,000 by 2020, andmore than 360,000 by 2030. One in twopeople will develop cancer at somepoint in their lives. This hike incancer cases, driven large-ly by the UK’s ageingpopulation, meansthat NHS cancerservices are underunprecedented pres-sure. Resolving thepressure has been akey focus for theTaskforce.

The six strategicpriorities are:A radical upgrade inprevention and publichealth.

The strategy outlines how theNHS should work with the Government toimprove public health, including adopting anew tobacco control strategy within the next12 months, and a national action plan onobesity. The Taskforce wants to see a reduc-

tion in smoking from 18.4 per cent now, toless than 13 per cent by 2020.A national ambition to achieve earlier di-agnosis.

The ambition set out is that, by 2020, 95per cent of patients referred for testing by aGP are definitively diagnosed with cancer, orcancer is ruled out, and that patients get thisresult within four weeks. This requires asignificant increase in diagnostic capacity, giving GPs direct access to key investigativetests, and the testing of new models whichcould reduce the burden and reliance onGPs. Currently, patients urgently referred forsuspected cancer by their GP need to be seen

by a specialist within 14 days of refer-ral, but no guidance exists forwhen patients can expect to get the

results.Patient experienceon a par with clini-cal effectivenessand safety.

The strategy rec-ommends giving allconsenting patientselectronic access toall test results andother communications

involving further care by2020. Patients should also

have access to a clinical nurse spe-cialist or other key worker to help

coordinate their care. The NHS must continueto develop and adopt meaningful ways tomeasure a patient’s experience, including theannual Cancer Patient Experience Survey.Transformation in support for people liv-

ing with and be-yond cancer.

By 2020 everyperson with cancershould have accessto elements of a‘Recovery Package’– a comprehensiveplan that outlinestreatment as well aspost-treatment sup-port and care. Anational quality oflife metric shouldbe developed by2017 to ensure

better support for people after treatment hasended. Clinical Commissioning Groups(CCGs) must ensure they commission appro-priate End of Life care, in accordance withNICE guidelines and the Choice Review.Investment to deliver a modern high-qual-ity service, including:

• A replacement plan for radiotherapy• A permanent and sustainable model for

the Cancer Drugs Fund to help patients getaccess to innovative cancer treatments;

• A nationally-commissioned, regionally-delivered, molecular diagnostics service, toguide more personalised prevention, screen-ing and treatment;

• Plans to address critical deficits in thecancer workforce.Overhauled processes for commissioning, accountability and provision.

Clearer expectations need to be set by theend of 2015 for how cancer services shouldbe commissioned. By 2016, a network ofCancer Alliances should be established acrossthe country.

These will bring together key partners at alocal level, including patients. The Allianceswould use a dashboard of key metrics toaddress variation and support service rede-sign.

The Taskforce has recommended that aNational Cancer Team (NCT) should overseethe delivery of the Strategy.

Clearly the emphasis on patient and familyexperience of care is going to increase. Yourstories and experiences are very powerful, please take every opportunity to link with ourhealth care providers to help shape and de-velop our local cancer services.
