CASE STUDY Sophisticated Bioaccez RFID system and software surveys the location of workers in the Crossrail tunnel of London

THE CLIENT

Ferrovial Agroman UK in a Joint venture with other two companies is in charge of the construction of the Western Running Tunnels (from Royal Oak to Farringdon, 6,16 Km) one of the tunnels of the big London project of Crossrail.Crossrail is the biggest engineering project in Europe and is a major part of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy. Crossrail will connect 37 stations, including Heathrow airport and Maidenhead in the west with Canary Wharf, Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east. The main civil engineering construc-tion works for Crossrail are projected to be completed in 2017. Fit-out of stations and testing will continue afterwards. It is expected that Cros-srail services will commence on the central section by late 2018 followed by a phased introduction of services along the rest of the Crossrail route over several months.

“Bioaccez’s active tags are sending information every second during more

than 4 years”

THE CHALLENGE

The tunnel is constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) technology. The first machine was launched at Royal Oak Portal to tunnel towards east of Farringdon, by creating the running tunnels first, after which the station tunnels will be enlarged around these running tunnels. It is a dangerous environ-ment, with normal hazards of digging underground including the presence of heavy machinery and tens of vehicle movements everyday

The safety of the workers is one of the main focus in this work. It is pri-mordial to know how many workers are under the tunnels, where and who they are.

THE SOLUTION

Bioaccez has provided the company with a network of active RFID recei-ver system, connected to the Ether-net network used for other applica-tions too. Each receiver is connected to a high gain and very directional antenna working at 2,4 GHz. A couple of receivers near the entrance of the tunnel gave the indication of entrance or exit of the tunnel.Secure-Loc, a software system origi-nally developed by Bioaccez and Mi-croart was originally used to protect people in hospitals, It was thereafter adapted for ground use in order to achieve a secured installation. In addition to being able to point out the exact location of the workers, the software can also track people by qualification. By searching in the database for a specific worker or category, the company could find the person’s situation. hence, it allows the company to move its staff around more efficiently and effectively.

CASE STUDY Sophisticated RFID system and software surveys the location of construction workers in the Basque Y High-Speed Rail Network tunnel

THE CLIENT

JUPER SEGURIDAD is a reputa-ted integrator in the field of Safey solutions in Spain; their customer, the joint venture of Construcciones SOBRINO, OBEGISA and GEOTUNEL is in charge of the construction of the Eastern Tunnel of Zumarraga, a long tunnel of the big project for the High Speed Train (TAV in spanish) in the Basque country. Basque Y (also known as Y Vasca) is a 172km-long high speed network currently under construction in Spain. Basque Y will connect the three capitals in the Basque Autonomous Region, Bilbao, Vitoria and San Sebastián, and will transport both goods and passen-gers.

Construction on Basque Y was laun-ched in October 2006 and is expected to be completed by 2017.

THE CHALLENGE

The tunnel is constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines, but also explosive methods when necessary. It is a dangerous environment, with normal hazards of digging under-ground including the presence of heavy machinery and tens of vehicle movements everyday

Right now the presence of the workers is controlled manually at the entrance of the tunnel where the workers leave their ID card in a box, and they take out when they exit. The main offices are 1 Km away of the entrance so for controlling who is in or out someone needs to go to the box entrance and personally see the badges. The challenge is to have an online listing in the computer of the office indicating who is in the tunnel.

THE SOLUTION

Bioaccez has provided the integrator Company JUPER SEGURIDAD with a network of active RFID receiver system, linked to the Ethernet net-work of the construction company by means of a WiFi link and also a 3G link with the main offices. The workers are equipped with an ac-tive tag attached to their helmets or in the pocket of their jacket. The tags is transmitting the position every second and the lifetime is more than 4 years. Each receiver is connected to a high gain and very directional antenna working at 2,4 GHz. A couple of receivers near the entrance of the tunnel gave the indication of entrance or exit of the tunnel.Secure-Loc, a software system originally developed by Bioaccez and Microart and used to protect people in hospitals, was adapted for ground use and it was be the best way to achieve a secured installation.

CASE STUDY Bus Depot access control using active RFID for the Naples buses in Italy

THE CLIENT

The “Compagnia di Trasporti Pubblici di Napoli “(CTP) is the primary mu-nicipal transport authority in Naples, Italy, maintaining a fleet of 454 ecological buses (methane powered) that are licensed for 132 bus routes. As a transportation provider, CTP has shown a willingness and capacity to effectively employ innovative techno-logies to improve its operations and service.

Bioaccez Controls, based in Spain, de-livers innovative solutions for access control, time & attendance, asset management and anti-theft devices. The key to Bioaccez’s success is its workforce, comprised of talented professionals with an international outlook, who work enthusiastically to improve the quality of their products and to provide the customer with exceptional service.

THE CHALLENGE

With a constant stream of buses in and out of its urban depot, Compag-nia di Trasporti Pubblici di Napoli needed to regulate access to its facility to provide site security and ensure that drivers were performing their daily routes in strict adherence to the designated schedule.

THE SOLUTION

Combining their software engineering expertise, experience in access con-trol, and industry-leading active RFID technology, Bioaccez , Wavetrend and Consorzio Nazionale Sicurezza from Naples, designed a custom solution to provide uncompromising access control and sophisticated monito-ring. Accessing CTP’s depot requires buses to pass through two entry barriers. Each of the checkpoints was equipped with RX-201 readers con-nected to Bioaccez’s FLAT antennas to increase the read range.

This allows the readers to remotely recognize the tag of an approaching bus, verify its access authorization, and automatically open the gate to permit entry.

All CTP buses are equipped with Wavetrend TG-800 tags, encoded with a unique identifier and affixed to the bus windshield. The tags are tamper-proof and permanently secured to the vehicles to ensure that they are not compromised or stolen. Previously, access to the depot was regulated through use of proximity cards issued to the drivers. Security under the prior system was not ideal as the proximity cards were susceptible to loss or theft. Additionally, CTP found that drivers would often loan or exchange their cards, thereby undermining efforts to track bus route performance. By applying Wavetrend’s rugged vehicle tracking tags, Bioaccez was able to guarantee tracking integrity for each of the buses.
