To

Dobilismo neke nove nosioce olimpijskih meda-lja, saznali dosta zanimljivih informacija opodsvesnoj komunika ciji i razvoju umnih

vetina. Odran je sastanak lanova Pred-sednitva i Nadzornog odbora, na kojimasu pretresena razna pitanja i dogovorenioblici budue saradnje.

I tema i

    Rajoviem, Uroem Petroviem i timom

profesora druili smo se skoro svaki dan ikroz naizgled lake igre asocijacija, poga-anja i nabrajanja razvijali svoje umove.

Mnogo toga korisnog smo nauili o NTCsistemu uenja, to e nam svakako ko-

odnosno gledati ono to ti radi i ime sebavi, i to raditi najbolje to moe.

dimo.

    4. Kakvo je tvoje vienje kulture?Kultura je neto to mi pravimo i ime se

bavimo, to e nekog edukovati.

bar naa deca imati mnogo bolju i kultur-nu svest i politiku. Nama

je to jedna normalna stvar sa kojom ivi-mo. To je bar moje miljenje.

Pozorita ive samaod sebe. Kod nas pozorita ive od grada.Kad se promeni taj sistem, verovatno ese promeniti svest ljudi kako to treba dafunkcionie. Sve vie i glumaca i raznih lju-

Kako on to postie?Ta uloga je jedini lik u Ministarki ko-

ji pravi protivteu ivki. On dri balans.

    12. Koliko se aktivno bavi muzikom?Ne bavim neto aktivno muzikom, vie

amaterski, za sebe, a moda u nekada inapraviti neto muziko-scenski. To jo neznam, videemo kako nas bude vreme slu-ilo. Za muziku ima vremena. Instrumenteimam, tu su, vebam, to je bitno.

Generalno, novac doe i

no srean i zadovoljan ivotom.15. Novi film u kom si glumio je u zavr-

jeste u zavrnoj fazi.

jedna urbana pria. Nadam se da e to onidobro napraviti.

Treba ostati prizeman, svoj, pame-tan i to znati iskoristiti.

    20. Polonije u Hamletu kae Laertu(prvi in, trea pojava).

Al prvo: budi veran sebi sam,I onda e doi, ko za danom no,Da nee biti krivac nikome.Zbogom. Moj blagoslov nek zaini sve.

Same sobom biti zadovoljan i srean. Ako joneto i napravi veliko u ivotu, treba odr-avati to i biti dobar u tome.

Burning for StrategyWhat are your impressions about strate-

gy? Boring? Dry, theoretical stuff? Or morecreating a great plan? YEEESSSSS! Thatswhat strikes me about strategy. An overallmission as general purpose of an organisa-tion like Mensa, visions of what you wantto be, breaking them down into goals toreach and measures, how to achieve this.

It is a big task, involving all areas of an or-ganisation, the consensual will of all stake-holders to contribute, and the backup ofthe executive board. I find it thrilling tocoordinate people and measures, tryingto convince others to work with us andthird parties, and to watch implications ofmeasures on various units and its interde-pendencies. Thats what I like to do, andMensa offers me the stage for it.

LEAPing ahead! In 2011 I started working on Mensa Ger-

manys strategy. Although it brought quitea few challenges, I became more and moreinvolved in it. When I reported about it atMensa meetings, I was amazed about thewide resonance I received. No matter ifboard members, volunteers or normal

Ms, they all agreed in emphasising the im-portance of the subject, so I felt confirmedand pushed ahead in my work. Togetherwith other interested Ms I formed a team.To develop a working plan, I consulted na-tional and international constitutions andplans, but somehow we did not get theright kick-off. So I travelled to the Inter-national Board of Directors (IBD) Meetingin Calgary, where I met other national rep-

    02 06 July 2014, Boston: Annual Gather-ing Mensa USA

We headed for Boston on the 02 July, our wedding anniversary. My husbandKevin accompanied me, and due to thetime shift, we had an extended anniver-

I tried lobster for the first timein my life (but didnt particularly like it).Not really being used to having a hospital-ity suite (air-conditioned to chill!), I washappy to see some familiar faces amongthe over 2.300 participants, mainly Msfrom various countries I had met in Cal-gary. Unlike the German annual gatherings(AG) there were hardly any events outside

the hotel. However, there were plenty oflectures, workshops and presentations atthe hotel as well as games suites. Togetherwith my registration documents, I also hadreceived invitations to two receptions, onefrom the chairman of Mensa USA, DanBurg, the other one from the Mensa Edu-cation and Research Foundation (MERF).At the official opening in the evening wereceived a more detailed impression ofthe meeting, the representatives from

other countries, the volunteers and activi-ties. After MILs investment in the LEAPprogramme, I found it a bit disappointingthat neither the LEAP programme nor thecommittee members or ambassadors werementioned. The next day Elissa, the chair-woman of Mensa International, organiseda LEAP Meet and Greet. Zdravko had beenon the same flight from Frankfurt, andAlex I knew from Calgary, but there I met

my other fellow LEAPers for the first time. Also some committee members, LEAPersof former years, took part.

I really had enjoyed the IBD meeting inCalgary, so I was looking forward to theCanada night in the hospitality suite. Ca-nadian decoration and food, so the goodmood spread quickly through the venue. Itwas the 03 July, and due to an upcominghurricane, the fireworks the Independence

Day had been advanced by one day. Whata happy coincidence, that Dans receptiontook place on the 26th floor! One would

think that fireworks are more or less thesame, but I was impressed by shapes offlowers and smileys, as I had never seen itbefore. I was excited being in the US fortheir national holiday, expecting parades, proud Americans and oceans of flags. Wasit only because of the hurricane (whichhad attenuated to major rainfalls andsome gusts of winds)? Or hadnt I been atthe right places? Nothing but perhaps a

few more flags than the days before.Elissa had developed a feedback sheetfor the LEAP presentation. Most of us at-tended each others presentations and dis-cussed our subjects and slides. I was reallyhappy that my presentation received lotsof consent from the audience. I had wishedfor some more attendants from the rows ofnational representatives, but unluckily mypresentation had to share a time slot withthe IBD Meet and Greet. In regard to the

investment MIL had spent on us, we wouldhave wished for a bit more announce-ment and attention. Nevertheless we weregrateful that we had the chance to presentat such a big meeting.

At the gala dinner on Saturday nightElissa had invited us to her table, togetherwith many others I knew, like Abby Salny, which I had met at the MERF reception,Michael Feenan, the executive director of

MIL, and Jim Werdell from MERF. We hada nice meal, but afterwards many peopleleft, instead of sitting together and enjoy-ing nice talks. Also at the Farewell brunchI had the impression that having a mealseemed to be of major importance thanthe people attending. The organisers pre-sented a review of the gathering with inmy perception- more focus on local celeb-rities than on Mensa. However, it has been

an exciting experience and my first USgathering surely will stay in my memory.

If the article is split for two editions, Irecommend using the following lines asstart for the second half. Otherwise theyjust can be deleted.

Each year Mensa International ap-points five to six members that work onsubjects of major importance for Mensafor the Leadership Exchange AmbassadorProgramme (LEAP). Those LEAP ambas-

For a chocoholic like me, Zurich is aplace to be. I will not go into details on howmuch chocolate I purchased (neither howmuch money I spent on it). The gatheringoffered so much more. Okay, perhaps thecanteen of Zurichs university was not themost striking place for the Icebreaker on

nightfall fireworks exploded all over thecity, and from our heightened position weactually looked DOWN on the fireworks. What a fantastic experience!

As airline employee, the tour at Zurichsairport Kloten was a Must for me. Walkingthe terminal landside and airside was forme probably less exciting than for others, but the baggage transportation systemand the baggage security checks also con-

tained some deeper insights for me. Out-side on the apron we watched the arrivalof an incoming flight with lots of detailsabout the ground-handling services.

Upon return there was hardly enoughtime to get dressed up for the gala dinnerat the glamourous banquet hall of Scht-zenhaus Albisgtli. Probably other trav-ellers on the tram were slightly stunned, when they all of a sudden found them-selves surrounded by people in gala out-

fits. Mensa Switzerland has spent extraor-dinary efforts to provide an entertainmentprogramme with the excellent meal. Sev-eral piano performances, great singers andan extremely surprising Mensa choir pre-sented what they had rehearsed, in somecases, only a few hours. MultifunctionalTeeKay entertained the guests with someinsight about Swiss habits, but also assinging and dancing Brother CleMensa.

Later the stage gave way to a dance floor.Unfortunately, soon the music was turnedup so loud, that it became impossible totalk to one another, and, being over-sensi-tive to noise, I was not the only one feelingcompelled to leave earlier than desired.

Despite its unembellished location(again) at the university canteen, the Fare-well Brunch offered once more tasty Swissfood (dont ask for my weight!) in the com-

pany of interesting people chatting aboutall the world and his brother. It felt hard toleave everything behind. Even the sky over

Zurich started crying. Our plane took off inthe rain, and clouds deprived us from a lastfarewell view of the city.

Its not only that I would have missed twoexciting Mensa events without the LEAPprogramme. My work for strategy benefitsfrom the opportunity to present my ideas, from the interest and support of manypeople I have met and the message thatis spreading. I have returned to Germany

with new ideas and motivation to drive ourstrategic plans further. I have heard of andasked by other national Mensa chaptersabout strategy. According to my latest in-formation, the International Board of Di-rectors (IBD) will discuss a motion to installa Strategic Planning Committee at theirmeeting in Windsor end of September 2014,and I have been asked to join the commit-tee. Keep your fingers crossed for it!

Even when I am now writing this article a

week later (enjoying the last Swiss choco-lates), I am still on cloud nine. Thank you,Mensa International, for the opportunityto work on this subject, and I hope it willrepay soon, in Germany, in many othercountries and for Mensa International.

Are you working on a subject of interestfor other Mensa chapters? Think about ap-plying for LEAP, too! Find more informa-

    A ying startOn April 20th 2013,

    the Dutch Mensa

    Foundation was

    launched during the

    AGM of Mensa Te

    Netherlands. Tefoundation got off to

    a ying start thanks

    to a donation from

    Mensa Te Nether-

    lands and the Foun-

    dations 23 Founding

Friends, who each donated 1,000 euro.

As the Foundation is recognized as a

charity by the Dutch ax authorities,

donations to the foundation are tax

    deductible.

    Advantagesof a separateFoundationTis separate

    vehicle also

    enables us to nd

    funds outside the

    Mensa circle. Te

    organization canbe completely

    transparent on

    funding and

    spending to non-members also. An

    independent Foundation guarantees a

long term focus - a managerial focus -

    on a multi- year strategy.

Spending money wiselyTe Foundation doesnt only raise

money, but seeks to spend it wisely. In2013 the necessary steps were taken

so that it is clear how and why the

Foundation supports what it does. Four

of the eleven requests for nancial sup-

port have been received. Te Founda-

    tion also encourages good examples

and best practices on an individual level

    via the Awards Program

    Awards programIn 2013 the Founda-

    tion started its Awards

    Program, which we will

    repeat annually. Te

    awards aim to promote

    and encourage best

practices in dealingwith the highly gifted,

    and in so doing inspire

    others to follow suit.

Tere are three categories of awards,

and the 2013 awards were presented

in November last year. A team, whose

    project was an educational program

    within schools for highly intelligent

    children, won theEducationcategory.

In the category of Work, the winner

was a manager of the Police High

ech Crime eam. In the category,

Society, the winner was a V presenter.

    Te awards gathered together many

inspiring examples of how the talents

of highly intelligent people can beharnessed.

    FundingDuring 2013, several people started

    spontaneous initiatives to support the

foundation as part of Mensa Te Neth-

    erlands 50th Gold Anniversary: a

Gold Concert, a Gold Pin-Up Calen-

dar and the farewell party - including

an auction organised by the chairman

of Mensa - raised funds for the Foun-

dation. Tese initiatives are proof of the

    wide support for the Foundation.

In 2014 the 100 member club

was launched: a network of people

who commit themselves to donate 100

euro plus 100 minutes for ve years.

Members can choose how they spend

their 100 minutes, for example, by

    talking about the Mensa Foundation

at a Mensa event, at their office, or anyother event in their own network. A

presentation or an article also contrib-

utes to the 100 minute criteria. So far,

the members of the club have been very

creative in what they do with their 100

minutes as was to be expected!

PRPublicity wise, the awards program was

very successful. We expect that once

    this becomes a famous nationwide

awards program it will generate even

Dutch Mensa Foundation one year on

Te awards gath-ered together manyinspiring examplesof how the talentsof highly intelligent

    people can beharnessed.

more publicity. Tis award program is

unique in Te Netherlands. It is aninstrument with low implementation

costs with a high return on investment.

On 1st November we will hand out the

2014 awards. Te deadline for nomina-

tions is 4th September and nomina-

tions (in Dutch only) can be made

    through our website www.mensafonds.

    nl.

Special projectsOne of the focus points in the secondhalf of 2014 will be the grey people.

Tere is no program for the gifted

elderly. Some are unable to attend

Mensa events, and local activities for

the elderly are sadly lacking in ap-

pealing to the gifted. Society wastes

    talented, experienced and knowledge-

able people who can still contribute to

the society. In developing this theme

the Foundation focuses on bringingparties together, such as an old-age

home and students from a university.

We are starting with a pilot in 2014

and hope this will inspire many others

    to follow suit.

Te coming yearsTe awards and funding program will

be continued. We will intensify our

search for new nancial resources and

are looking to develop more expertise

in this eld. Tere are still so many

projects we would like to initiate!

got a wide face? things could go yourway...

Having a wider face helps menwhen they negotiate for them-

selves but hurts them when theyare negotiating in a situation thatrequires compromise. Addition-ally, men who are more attractiveare better collaborators compared

    to less attractive men.

Tese are among the ndings outlined

in a just published paper co-authored

by Michael P. Haselhuhn and Elaine

    M. Wong, assistant professors of man-

agement at the University of California,

    Riversides School of Business Ad-

    ministration. Te paper describes four

negotiation simulations set up by the

    authors of the paper.

In one, they found that men with

wider faces negotiated a signing bonus

of nearly $2,200 more than men with a

    more narrow face.

    Similarly, in another scenario, they

found that when men with wider faces

were selling a chemical plant they

negotiated a higher sale price than menwith a more narrow face. When those

same wide-faced men were in the buyer

role they negotiated a lower price than

    the narrow-faced men.

In the third negotiating scenario, in

which a creative solution is needed to

bridge a gap on a real estate transaction,

the researchers placed men in teams of

two. Tey found that the teams with

wider-faced men were less successful inthe negotiation.

In the nal scenario, research as-

sistants were given a series of questions

to access the attractiveness and beauty

of the research subjects. Again, the men

were paired off and given the same

scenario in which they needed to come

up with a creative solution to bridgea gap on a real estate transaction. Te

researchers found that the more attrac-

tive men were more successful in the

    negotiation.

Tese studies show that being a

man with a wider face can be both a

    blessing and a curse

    and awareness of this

    may be important for

    future business suc-

    cess, Haselhuhn said.

    Te paper, Nego-

    tiating face-to-face:

    Mens facial structure

    predicts negotiation

    performance, was

    published online in the

    journal Te Leadership

    Quarterly. Haselhuhn

    and Wongs co-authors are Margaret

    E. Ormiston and M. Ena Inesi, bothof the London Business School, and

Adam D. Galinsky of Columbia Uni-

    versity.

Te paper builds on several previous

    papers focused on what Haselhuhn,

Wong and the other co-authors call

    facial width-to-height ratio. Previous

    ndings include:

    Individuals behave more selshly

    when interacting with men with

wider faces and this selsh behav-

ior elicits selsh behavior in others.

Men with wider faces are more

    likely to lie and cheat.

Men with wider faces tend to lead

    more nancially successful rms.

With the most recent paper, Hasel-

huhn and Wong aimed to ll a hole inthe negotiation research eld.

Skillful negotiation is a critical com-

ponent of effective leadership. A lot

    of research has examined negotiators

    behaviors, such as asking questions

and making aggressive rst offers, and

    their inuence

    on processes and

    outcomes.

    However,

    with the excep-

    tion of research

    on sex and

    gender effects,

    there has been

    considerably

    less research on

    how individual

    psychological or

    physical differences impact negotiating

outcomes. Haselhuhn said he believes the most

recent ndings are valuable to every-

    body.

    We negotiate everyday whether we

think about it or not, he said. Its not

just the big things, like a car or a home.

Its what time your kid is going to go

to bed or what you or your spouse are

    going to have for dinner.

    Tese studies show

that being a man with a

wider face can be both a

    blessing and a curse and

    awareness of this may

    be important for future

    business success

We all know that OpSpeak is a

    particular, esoteric topic of exchange

    among the sometime hospitalized that

have that experience to recycle later in

    tranquillity. Te trafficking in fulsome

details of scalpelling and dosage, and

the general vicissitudes that the average

person cant call on, make for rich trad-

    ing over a disconcerted dinner-table.

    But within that tight brotherhood

theres a particular elite of decidedly

one-up experience that puts us in a

league all of our own as far as turning

the faces of the assembled company

green, and not with envy, is concerned.

I refer to those of us who have had

to endure the major invasions of our

    most intimate anatomies, and have

    consequently undergone, like a business

    enterprise under economic strain, inter-

nal rearrangement. In my case, the distinctive badge of

emergence from the theatre intact but

    healthily scathed, was the fty-three

steel clamps holding my torso together.

Not visible in polite society, certainly,

but the mere description of it suf-

ced to transform me into a fearsome

character in the Captain Hook / Long

John Silver / Goetz von Berlichingen*

class. A triumph of the ironmongers

    craft, half-esh, half such tangible

artice as in slightly different applica-

tion constituted the suit of Milanese

plate by Lorenz Colman von Augsburg

that protected those going into the

joust. Te man moving through this

world partly concealed by the heavy-

weight devices of surgeons and smiths

    is already half-way toward monster.

You may be sure I made capital out

    of it.

Alas, ten days out of hospital, the

District Nurse turned up to remove all

this jewellery more exotic than tattoos.

Okay, she proclaimed, with a con-

dence that had more to do with pro-

    fessional know-how than mathematics,

Ill do it in two sessions, half now, half

    on Tursday.

Half ? Oh, come now. Tats a

promise shed be hard put to keep in

equal pattern in two - or even three -

ve - in any number of sessions otherthan one. Or, of course, fty-three.

But District Nurses are immune to

the disturbance of their working day

by these higher reections, a preci-

sion timetable was not of the essence,

and my reduction to the ranks of the

normal attired in nothing more than

pathetic human fragility was a fate to

be dispensed with a minimum of fuss

    or nostalgia. (She had, incidentally,

    offered the none-too helpful comment

on the side that she usually suggested

to patients of a nervous disposition

that they might want to down a par-

acetamol or two before starting, but,

[cheerfully] too late for that now.)

Like the rest of you, I now go about

the world in un-terrifying guise, and

like most of us, rather desperately

ferreting around for some other such

potent distinction from the man in the

    street.

attoos? Not on your belly. Well,

    not on mine.

A week later - it seemed appropri-

ate - shaking the surgeons hand that

had intruded where my own had never

been, I couldnt shake off this feeling

that I was associating with a master-

craftsman whose fate it is eternally to

    see his nest workmanship destroyed.

(In the case of Lorenz von Augsburg,

that outcome rather depended onwhether or not his man won the joust.)

    * Ironhand, just in case youve not come across the

    Goethe play.

Fifty-three Steel ClampsMany o us have aced the rigours o surgery and

    Schmoll (Xlibris). Tis delightful

holiday fairy tale (not to be confused

    with Holly the Christmas

book for ages 4 to 8. In

    addition to the cover, Edie

    who is a well-known

    author, musician, painter,

and poet did the 20+ oil

    paintings that illustrate

the story, which in a non-

    preachy way highlights

the ups and downs of life,

    the value of friendship

and love, the joy of a family Christ-

mas, the happiness of helping others,

saving our natural resources, and the

magical world of fantasy. Te story was

awarded second prize in the SteppingStones National Contest for Childrens

Fiction. I was sufficiently impressed to

gift a copy to my granddaughter Chloe

for Christmas, and Id suggest you all

consider doing the same this season.

    Universe, and some

    of Richard Bachs

aviator books at the top of their hit list, heres a candidate for the new kid on

the block. Once again, the underlying

precept is that throwing oneself into a

totally strange environment is the best

    path to self-

    discovery and

    enlightenment

    and certainly

    makes life an

    exotic/erotic

    experience as

    well. Its easy

    to differentiate

    between his

    his philo-

    sophical meanderings as he collects

the latter under a separate Musings

headings, so if you want to read it as

an armchair adventure yarn, you can

simply skip the philosophy. Te rstleg of his journey is on a bicycle named

Nelly, going from London to Istanbul

and encompassing 150 days of medical

    crises, nancial meltdowns, wild par-

ties, and heartbreak. A major obstacle:

a gal whom he considers his soul mate

    and was supposed to meet

    him in urkey is involved

    with someone else back in

England. What to do? Ifyoure Peter, you just keep on

    more adventures and offering

    some fundamental insights

Do Peter and the girl ever

    Percevals Secretby C.C. Yager (C.C.

Yager). Described by one reviewer a a

    dense psychological suspense novel full

of surprises, this novel is set in 2048,

when world power is divided between

China and its Pacic allies and an

    American-Russian-European coalition,

and both factions are attending a world

summit meeting in Vienna. Its pro-

tagonist is Evan Quinn, an American

    orchestra conductor who is frustrated

by the control of the Arts Council over

    his artistic freedom and consequently

    defects to Vienna.

    But Viennese police

    suspect Evan is a spy

    and they, along with a

    CIA agent stationed

at the American Em-bassy in Vienna, keep

    Schmoll (Xlibris). Tis delightful

holiday fairy tale (not to be confused

    with Holly the Christmas

    Fairy) is a holiday picture

book for ages 4 to 8. In

    addition to the cover, Edie

    who is a well-known

    author, musician, painter,

and poet did the 20+ oilpaintings that illustrate

the story, which in a non-

    preachy way highlights

the ups and downs of life,

    the value of friendship

and love, the joy of a family Christ-

mas, the happiness of helping others,

saving our natural resources, and the

magical world of fantasy. Te story was

awarded second prize in the SteppingStones National Contest for Childrens

Fiction. I was sufficiently impressed to

gift a copy to my granddaughter Chloe

for Christmas, and Id suggest you all

consider doing the same this season.

A new model shows howearly black holes could havegrown to over a billion solarmasses.

At the ends of the Universe there are

black holes with masses equaling bil-

lions of our sun. Tese giant bodies

quasars feed on interstellar gas, swal-

lowing large quantities of it non-stop.Tus they reveal their

    existence: the light

    that is emitted by the

gas as it is sucked in

    and crushed by the

    black holes gravity

    travels for eons across

    the Universe until it

    reaches our telescopes.

    Looking at the edges

    of the Universe is

    therefore looking into

    the past. Tese far-

    off, ancient quasars

    appear to us in their

    baby photos taken

    less than a billion

years after the Big Bang: monstrous

    infants in a young Universe.

Normally, a black hole forms when

a massive star, weighing tens of solarmasses, explodes after its nuclear fuel

is spent. Without the nuclear furnace

at its core pushing against gravity, the

star collapses. Much of the material is

ung outwards in a great supernova

blast, while the rest falls inward, form-

ing a black hole of only about ten solar

    masses.

    Since these ancient quasars were

    rst discovered, scientists have won-

dered what process could lead a small

black hole to gorge and fatten to such

an extent, so soon after the Big Bang.

In fact, several processes tend to

limit how fast a black hole can grow.

For example, the gas normally does

not fall directly into the black hole,

but gets sidetracked into a slowly spi-

raling ow, trickling in drop by drop.

When the gas is nally swallowed

by the black hole, the light it emits

pushes out against the gas. Tat light

    counterbalances gravity, and it slows

the ow that feeds the black hole.

So how, indeed, did these ancient

    quasars grow? Professor al Alexan-

der, Head of the Particle Physics and

    Astrophysics Department at the Te

    Weizmann Institute of Science in

Israel, proposes a solution in a paper

    written together with Professor Priy-

    amvada Natarajan of Yale University,

    which recently appeared in Science.

Teir model begins with the forma-

tion of a small black hole in the very

early Universe. At that time, cosmolo-

gists believe, gas streams were cold,

    dense, and contained much larger

amounts of material than the thin gas

streams we see in todays cosmos. Te

    hungry, newborn black hole moved

around, changing direction all the timeas it was knocked

    about by other baby

    stars in its vicinity.

    By quickly zigzag-

    ging, the black hole

    continually swept up

    more and more of

    the gas into its orbit,

    pulling the gas direct-

ly into it so fast, the

    gas could not settle

    into a slow, spiraling

    motion. Te bigger

    the black hole got,

    the faster it ate; this

    growth rate, explains

    Alexander, rises faster

    than exponentially.

    After around 10 mil-

    lion years a blink of

an eye in cosmic time the black hole would have lled out

to around 10,000 solar masses. From

then, the colossal growth rate would

have slowed to a somewhat more lei-

surely pace, but the black holes future

path would already be set leading it

to eventually weigh in at a billion solar

    masses or more.

Energy From the Sun: New Spongelike

    Structure Converts Solar Energy Into

    Steam. (Nature

    Communications)

    MI scientists

    are using graph-

    ite akes and

    carbon foam to

    make steam with

    solar energy.

    Other solar steam

generators have been created, but this

one only needs ten times the bright-

ness of a normal sunny day instead of

1,000 times. And it makes use of 85%

of the light it soaks up. Te technique

employs a two-layer carbon disk thatoats on the surface of a container of

water. Te lower, porous layer provides

otation and lets water seep through

    slowly to the

    upper part

    that is made of

    microwave-

    popped

    graphite chips.

    Local hotspots

    on the chips

    convert water

into steam. As low-tech as steam seems

to be, it is still the main way we move

energy into our homes and businesses,

whether it is generated by sun, fossil

    fuel, or nuclear power.

Build a Better Battery With Waste Paper.

In another advance for the art of

    recycling, scientists at the National

    Chemical Laboratory in Pune, In-

dia have found a way to use recycled

wastepaper for the storage of electricity.

Tey bake strips of the paper at 800C

and treat it with strong acid, turning it

    into a gnarly-textured carbon surface

with a vast area that can hold electrons.

Add an electrolyte gel and you get a

supercapacitor. In case you dont know,

    supercapacitors can store electricity like

batteries, but they charge up a lot faster.

Te world grows increasinglymore chaotic year after year, and our brains are constantlybombarded with images. A new

study from Center for theNeural Basis of Cognition(CNBC), a joint projectbetween Carnegie Mel-lon University and theUniversity of Pittsburgh, reveals how neurons in the

part of the brain responsi-ble for recognizing objectsrespond to being shown

a barrage of images. Testudy is published online byNature Neuroscience.

    Te CNBC researchers showed animal

subjects a rapid succession of images,

some that were new, and some that the

subjects had seen more than 100 times.

    Te researchers measured the electrical

response of individual neurons in theinferotemporal cortex, an essential part

of the visual system and the part of the

    brain responsible for object recognition.

    In previous studies, researchers found

that when subjects were shown a single,

    familiar image, their neurons responded

less strongly than when they were

    shown an unfamiliar image.

However, in the current study, the

CNBC researchers found that whensubjects were exposed to familiar and

unfamiliar images in a rapid succession,

their neurons - especially the inhibito-

ry neurons - red much more strongly

and selectively to images the subject

    had seen many times before.
