Bill’s Blog

Well this is the last but one of this years Newsletters. I understand that Neville

will be producing the usual Christmas edition incorporating your collective

greetings the proceeds from which will go to the Presidents Charity (The Air

Ambulance).

I believe that the second of the “Getting To Know You” interview of Martyn

James by Tim Lee was equally as entertaining as the initial one hosted by

Mike Fenner. It is intended that this format will be continued.

On Monday, 7 November an extraordinary Council Meeting was held at Rich-

ard Giles residence in order to discuss in depth the various proposals and con-

cerns regarding the future Structure of Our Rotary Club. The result is of these

deliberations were accepted at the following normal Council Meeting and ,as

you are aware put to the Club at the next Business Meeting, very ably and effi-

ciently presented by Pres Elect Richard Giles. The principal change was the

Members wish to reinstate Club Members onto our Committees for Richards

year. By popular demand I intend to do this for the rest of my year and hope to

have this in place by the start of 2017. I trust this will improve the enthusiasm

and morale of the Club.

It looks like we have a good turnout for the partners evening on 30 November.

I would like to see jackets and ties (not mandatory-of course!).

I trust all members will be able to contribute some time to the Haskins Collec-

tion organised this year by Neil Meldrum. We have of course the SGM to

come and our Christmas event at Cobham’s this year.

Enjoy!----------- Cheers President Bill

Remembrance Sunday

St Mary’s Church Ferndown

Presidents Bill and Jenny representing Ferndown Rotary and Ferndown Inner Wheel at the

Remembrance Service at St Mary’s Church Ferndown. The Service was attended by contin-

gents from local clubs of the area. Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Sea and Air Cadets and many other

groups.. After the Service all groups marched to the British Legion Club for refreshments.

with Tim Lee

In the hot seat this time was Martyn James giving details of his life so far and very interesting it

was. With telling us that his mother was a bit of a snob and that was why his name was spelled

with a Y instead of an I, to the terrible impression he made on his first girl friend, I hate to say

this but things have not changed. His life has been a tyresome thing apparently, from Pirreli to

Tyrelands and now to his present venture Tyre Shack, his venture into catering business was a bit

of a failure and the old adage of sticking to what you know best is still true. A great interview by

Tim was enjoyed by the Club. I can not wait to see who will be next in the hot seat.

News from France

Jenny & Julian

In case you are thinking that that les Daniel have gone quiet, it is because we haven't had time to draw

breath. The first week we returned, we were out six days out of seven among which, was an invitation

to the usual all day lunch, with the four other couples whom we meet up with regularly, then there was

the "fishing" expedition with Pierre and Mari-France and a few other friends at La Baule. This time

fishing meant digging up little shell fish from the sands which they call "coques", little molluscs with

round flat shells, perhaps like cockles.

I suppose the main event was the annual Autumn Lunch (another all-day affair) with the club of which

our walking group forms part. This is a sort of U3A but with no classes, simply walking cycling and

afternoons playing cards etc The President of the Club who is a walking friend of ours asked, when

we were back in France last time, if we would do some entertainment. In a weak moment I said we

would do a turn from Abba - I afterwards regretted it but there was no going back. We did the track

from "Take a Chance on Me" which really needs only two people - miming of course!! We persuaded

a few of the committee members to join in the background while we both dressed up. I had night-

mares for several nights beforehand, I was sure that a number of the Golden Oldies in the club had

never heard of Abba and imagined a deadly silence at the end.

However it was a great success and greeted with Bravos and applauding and lots of photos(!). We

have the horrible feeling that we shall have to do something similar for the Spring lunch!

Morgane (now 16) arrived a couple of days later and we all went off to Gran Canaria where we had a

really good time. She is perpetual motion so no sitting around the pool for days. We hired a car for

three days and toured the island extensively which was fascinating. Found several typically Spanish

places for lunch where no English or even French was spoken. Super people, lovely atmosphere and

real Spanish food - at Spanish prices.

Now a few days of repose before we plunge into the next round of events. No time to get bored!

Blast from the Past

A few Photo’s taken by Bob Jones at the Eastbourne Conference which was organised by the Club

when Malcolm was District Governor, though how he took them dressed as a Sun beats me, have

you noticed that he still has that same cheeky smile, must be the drink.

Mike Barrett used to sing this in the Car but according to Geoff Richardson

not very melodically as he was tone deaf

INNER WHEEL CLUB of FERNDOWN

Early in the month we had the pleasure of the company of District Chairman Linda Pratley at our

morning Business Meeting.

She spoke about her Installation, District 11's 80th birthday celebrations and her visits to other clubs

in the District and was pleased to report that some clubs were meeting the challenge of falling num-

bers by some members taking on more responsibilities or opening up 'open membership' within the

community.

Afterwards she joined a number of members for lunch before retuning home to the Isle of Wight.

Later in the month we celebrated our 38th Charter with lunch at the St. Leonards Hotel with special

guest D.C Linda, other guests, partners and friends.

At one of our 'in house' meetings we enjoyed much fun and fellowship with a 'Beetle Drive' some

members seemingly much more accomplished than others!

Parley Quirky Quiz We entered two teams in Parley’s Charity Quiz. Team Ferndown B consisting of Charlie, Fiona,

Bob, Maureen , Neville and Alan a friend of Charlie and Fiona. In the first half we were in the

lead but fell away slightly in the second half but managed two hang on to third place, still we

beat Ferndown A, though so did most of the other teams, especially Debbie Dunford’s Wareham

Rotary Team who trounced every one with a magnificent score (clever clogs), still it was a good

evening and raised quite a bit of money for Parleys charities. Well done Jenny.

The Object of Rotary

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as

a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and fos-

ter:

1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

2. High ethical standards in business and professions, and the

recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the

dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to

serve society.

3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s

personal, business and community life.

4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill

and peace through a world fellowship of business and

professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “Four-Way Test”

First: Is it the truth

Second: Is it fair to all Concerned?

Third: Will it build goodwill and better friend ships

Fourth: Will it be beneficial to all concerned
